Why doesn't my Stihl 4-Mix blower run like it should? Not as powerful & rpm not as high (BR600)

- Hey everyone!
This is a quick video going through my diagnoses of a Stihl BR600 4-Mix backpack blower that was only revving to 5500-5600rpm. This blower should rev to AT LEAST 7000rpm depending on the nozzle on the end of the output tube.
I spent a lot of time scratching my head, searching the Internet, looking on forums to no avail. This issue, to my knowledge, has yet to be documented so I wanted to put this video out in the event someone else has the same problem.
Watch as I explain my step by step mental checklist in diagnosing this issue... and check out the culprit which in this case, is a damaged cam timing gear.
OEM Part # 4282 030 1801
I'm happy to report the BR600 is back up and running like it should, getting that sweet sweet 7000RPM!
Thanks for watching,
-Dave
There's no substitute for experience, as you learn from each rebuild that you do. Developing a consistent routine, then discovering new problems along the way to add to your knowledge will always be useful for repairs in the future. Well done.
Hey Powrguy! Thanks for the kind words.
Good find! I’ve
Ran into that a ton! Especially on FS/KM series 4 mixes!
Crazy eh! Think it should be steel?
@@DavesSmallEngines Somebody needs to come up with a metal one and let’s test it
Thanks for the info Dave, another point to add to my repair check list. Well done!!!
Cheers!
Dave,I wouldn't have had a clue what was wrong with that after all of the normal points of inspection, that is until I watched this video, thanks for doing these,Buddy!
Cheers Ryan! Thanks for the kind words.
Dave, I love how well spoken you are, you have a really good head on your shoulders. I also love that you posted this, as this is a very unique issue that is not at all common. However, is becoming more common these days, due to using plastic inside engines. What is Stihl thinking? They are a commercial brand making a commercial piece of equipment, and they are clearly going the way of Briggs. And how well did that work for them? Apparently not well considering they declared bankruptsy. Excellent video Dave, I loved it!
Thanks Stellar, appreciate the kind words as always!!!
Great video Dave! I can't believe the cam is made out of plastic. Sounds like designed engineering for failure. Thanks again for sharing.
Crazy eh?
Good video Dave! I have seen that exact same issue before and it took me forever to figure it out. Sad that Stihl would make one of the most critical parts in a engine out of plastic. Quality is definitely in decline! 👍🇺🇸🇨🇦 Roger
No kidding! Hard to believe.
WOW! Now that is an insetting repair.
No kidding!
Good job.
Plastic has no place on a camshaft. Heard of this before but never seen it myself.
Pretty crazy eh?
wow Dave great video sir thks
Cheers EB!
thats crazy great video
Wild eh?
was it running real ruff smoking to. i have a br700 all new lines carb yes a stock carb. it starts runs great on high end but low end sounds like diesel and smokes no L adjustment more i open it ruffer the idle and more smoke has fresh non ethanol fresh filters 50:1 with stihl synthetic oil.
Great video Dave, just wondering what you set the valve lash at on the BR 600's ? I watched a UA-cam video tonight and a repair shop mechanic sets all of his at .008 in or 0.20 mm
Stihl manual says 0.10mm +- 0.02mm for both intake and exhaust.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Are those contact Surfaces on the Levers smooth ?
Maybe you could polish them, for a longer plastic cam life.
Wow, even here in Germany this part is out of stock.
They are very smooth, must have been a defect!
I've seen a Honda 4 stroke brushcutter that would not run , a check of the valves showed that they were barely opening at all . Going in deeper I found the cam completely worn down , almost no lobe left , made of plastic . Even some Briggs engines use plastic cams these days , it's not what I would call good engineering .
Great engineering…. Poor manufacturing!!!
Good video Dave. Jeremy the mower medic 1 has a good video about those cam shafts causing this problem and how easy it is to replace them.
I’ll check it out!
Jeremy Saw your video and was going to mention to Dave. You had a new cover plate from Stihl that had an additional piece which was designed to get more of the lubrication on the cam... Appreciate both your informative videos. Thumbs up....
This must be a common problem just got done rebuilding mine because it didn't rev out either and found the exact same issue my local dealer had it in stock 15 bucks. Can't complain too much this blower is 10 years old and needed the refresh anyway.
The br800 push rods are now different the are longer and have a bobble on each end i know this as i am working on one .
You should do a full rebuild video.
Hi Dave my br600 hasn’t got a spark arester on the muffler would this cause my blower not to give full revs ?
No, in my experience it has nothing to do with the arrester - it’s not that restrictive.
What if the aluminum plate behind the timing gear falls off can you still put it back on ?
Nope, time 4 a replacement .. even if it hasnt came apart but its still loose change it out asap!
Over the past years the engineers have conditioned up to accept poor quality. The marketers have taught us brand loyalty. It's a win win for the big companies.
A sad reality for consumers!
Ah another one of my blowers. I wore it out by hammering the throttle till empty many times showing off to people how you can make a tennis blow up right within the air flow making the people think the ball is magically floating by itself.
Wow! Was that some part of a stage act? Are you a clown?
Nice one Dave you would think it would have run like a bag of💩💩
No kidding, pretty wild it still ran!
Nice job, sent the broken crap to whomever's quality control, whatever happen to manufacture pride?
I know! Crazy!!!
can you get a better mike i could not hear you
Working on it!
This is the exact opposite of how my brain works. I take one bolt out of anything, I lose that bolt. To be organized ugh…
These are really really good engines but they are hard on the plastic cams. They will melt
Never run one without an air filter either. It will destroy it.
Seen one throw a rod bc it was ran with no filter.
I rebuild them a lot
But because people don't take care of them. 9 times out of 10?
People will run them on straight gas.
They are great for eating that gear. 4 mix is way overated. I see why shindaiwa sold Stihl that design now. 😂
Paying top dollar for a machine with a plastic camshaft, pitiful.
I know!!!
Bla bla bla bla
Thanks for watching!
