Vikku Vinayakram and Shakti were one of the most popular bands in my growing years. They performed occasionally in India too. I remember going to a big concert at the Talkatora stadium.
Of couse Zakir Hussain was well known and so was John MacLaughlin, but Vikku also had great following.

I listen to Shakti since I was 17, I am a guitarist and the first time I tried to play some of them it was impossible, but everything is practical (although it is almost impossible LOL) . In India the study of music is very different from the West, it is not only practice on the instrument but also reaching a very special state of concentration to reach such mastery. The Pot instrument is called Ghatam. It is used in Carnatic music .The ghatam is the same shape as an ordinary Indian domestic clay pot, it is made specifically to be played as an instrument. It warmed this boomers heart to see your reaction to “Joy” by John McLaughlin & Shakti @ the (Montreux Live 1976). My cousin from Baltimore knew I liked John McLaughlin and his band, the Mahavishnu Orchestra. All my cousin knew was John McLaughlin was going to be at a collage in Balt. He came to my house in Philly, told me to get in the car, and we proceeded back to Balt. The concert was in a basketball court, with the stands pushed back and plastic sheeting on the floor to shield it from scuff marks. Every one sat on the floor. I was close to the stage if you can call it that. I seen the clay pot (Ghatam) and was thinking WTF is he gonna do with that. Then seen the Tabla set and was wondering “where is the drum set” and started to worry about what to expect. Shakti opened with “Joy”. I was like the post boomer on the right with my mouth wide open, my heart was soaring and I had tears in my eyes at what I saw and heard. All intense/good music is like sex. Tension builds up and then there is a release. “Joy” is almost all ejaculation. Check out this tune from the Mahavishnu Orchestra. “One Word”

Regarding the guitar, it was built custom for John McLaughlin to mimic the nature of a sitar, so the extra strings you see crossing over are drone strings that ring out to a chord that is tuned to the specific raga (indian version of a scale). If I may also point out, the guitar also has scalloped (kinda scooped out) frets so it feels even closer to a sitar with the absence of the feeling of the fretboard underneath

They Never Rehearse. One do not rehearse in Indian Classical Music, one practices. When the Raga becomes a language one is proficient in with one's chosen instrument, many artists can simply gather together and have a conversation in that language, because they all speak it. ONE NEVER REHEARSES...that would kill the soul of the conversation...

Utterly mind blowing. All of them. John McLaughlin is the greatest guitar player I’ve ever heard. There’s literally nothing he cannot play to the highest level imaginable. Saw Zakir in Dublin a few years back. I was dumbfounded and elated. I dig what you’re saying re great artists being under appreciated. However, John’s band, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, were very successful during the early ‘70s. Prior to that, he played on a number of Miles Davis’s albums, including Bitches Brew, which actually has a track named after him. The ultimate accolade from the master.

Guys. You mention at the end About what band McLaughlin was in. Check out the initial lineup of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Absolutely tremendous. Drummer - Billy Cobham is the best you’ll ever see. Check out the live show in France in 1972 - One Word about 50 minutes in.

JM was indeed in several bands - multiple incarnations of mahavishnu orchestra for starters. You should check out ‘between nothingness and eternity’ IMO - a truly excellent live recording of the initial electric mahavishnu orchestra.
A great live recording too - lots of other good stuff, great albums with Al dimiola and paco de licia, Saturday night in San Francisco- and on and on

Have you seen Zakir interview at google? He talks a little about getting to know the person you collabbing with helps with how his/her performance will blend on stage. Its very clear with Zakir and Rakesh, Zakir played for Rakesh Uncle Ustad Harripersad Chaurisa, that connection grew into the magic you see now with them on stage.

The pot is a Ghatam and "the guy" banging the Ghatam is (I don't remember his real name but he's nicknamed Vikku (is he related to the extremely talented chess prodigy "Arjun Erigaisi"? They're both from Chennai and look a little alike)) called the god of Ghatam.
The freaking "violin player" is freaking Lakhsminarayana freaking Shankar. Yes, a freaking Shankar. A freaking son of the freaking Citar legend Ravi freaking Shankar.
John McLaughlin established and played in legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Before that he played with Miles Davis and perhaps something in between.
