This instrument is played by the bottom of your nail. Initially it is so difficult that it burns there. I tried to learn it but couldnt then I switched to voilin. It is said that You dont choose instrument, instrument chooses you.
@@tjubinful Both are classical instruments and both require more time effort and dedication compared to popular instruments. But Sarangi is way more difficult than voilin.
@Anshul there are different playing styles and ways to play the sarangi. You might be able to modify your instrument to raise the bottom main bridge that sometimes alters the position of the playing string allowing you to play with the actual nail rather than the cuticle of the finger nail; much less painful and allows you to play for long periods of time without damaging the skin on your fingers. I use thick pieces of leather cut from a belt to raise my bridge. Have been learning for over 10 years now
I knew you guys would be mesmerised by this instrument, especially Rick since he has knowledge about music. Loved your reaction. I'm glad that I recommended this reaction. Always look forward to quality videos and reactions from you. Happy to have contributed to it. One of the most diverse instruments out there.✌🏽
We Indians love to listen to instrumental solos. Veena, sarangi, flute, SHEHNAI, violin (listen to MS Gopalkrishnan and Lalgudi Jayaraman), sitar (Abdul Haleem Jafar Khan, Ravi Shankar, Nikhil Bannerji, Anoushka Shankar).
Sarangi is the sound of the universe crying. There is only one other instrument that I know of which can convey such strong a haunting, heart-wrenching feeling: the Duduk. It's an Armenian instrument. You should check out Pedro Eustache playing it in "Deliverance" by Yanni.
Certain Indian musical instruments seem to have a character of their own. They don't just produce musical notes, they stir up an emotional storm inside you. Sarangi, Sarod, Santoor & Sitar, all of them have profound effect on our emotions...
My personal favourite instrument is definitely sarangi followed by sarod......there is another instrument called esraj which is a mixture of sarangi and sitar (sounds like sarangi but the method is kinda like sitar) which is easier to play.....this sarangi is actually played by the bottom of your nail and at initial stage everyone gets a cut there but eventually all get habituated with it. It's has a very soulful sound which hits your heart and something is very extraordinary about this instrument .....idk how to explain that.....I really will like it if you react to any full video of playing sarangi whether any raga or other composition. You won't regret it 💕
Doesn't "Thade Rahiyo" for Pakeezah have an excellent example of the sarangi at the very beginning? Maybe react to it as it's classic song and movie as well...

When Rick said, "Most stringed instruments make you weep, this one makes you mourn", the first thought that came to my mind was: Wait till you hear the shehnai (Ustad Bismillah Khan). Every time I hear a shehnai I cannot but marvel at the depth of emotions it makes me feel. No doubt sarangi is a beautiful instrument and Pandit Ram Narayan's playing is out of this world. But the rabab, uff...I feel so lucky I am born in this beautiful country. The rudra veena, the vichitra veena, the sagar veena, the mohan veena, damru, manjira, daphli, khartal, morchang, even using ghunghroos as instruments during keertans, are all so beautiful. Perhaps they should also listen to some kirtans, one of my favourites is Haye Mhari Heli Re by Dayaram Sarolia (Ajab Shahar Project). Also Madhup Mudgal's Avdhu So Jogi Guru Mera and Pandit Channulal Mishra's Dimik Dimik Damru Dam Baje.
