I believe that most fear is a fear of death and being separated from God. I definitely have a strong fear of God and of hell and this fear has drawn me closer to the Lord. I pray often for protection, mercy and guidance for myself, my family and all those who have fallen away or don't know the Lord. I'm reminded daily of God's great love, compassion and mercy through scripture readings, blessings, family and friends, my priest and church community, dynamic catholic, and ultimately the cross. Thank you Matthew for sharing your inspiration, wisdom and passion to help draw us closer to Jesus. God bless!

THANK YOU!! Too many in our Church avoid, or even worse, question, the existence of Hell. It really troubles me when I hear a "popular" bishop state that, as a Catholic, we can reasonably hope that nobody is in Hell.
I prefer to heed the warnings of Jesus!🙏🙏🙏

I was a catechesis teacher and was told not to say anything about hell, as it would scare the kids. Shortly after I did talk about hell and one child’s mother complained that her child was scared. Again I was reprimanded, so I did not stay much longer. I finished the year but didn’t return. I was taught about the devil and I believe in hell. Thank you for this everyone needs to be aware.

We need to talk more about the reality of hell. Our society has become one of total acceptance of "whatever you feel" rather than basing our choices on the unchanging Word of God.

Great stuff. Fear is definitely a driver in my life. You put it in a great perspective here however - much better. I'd rather fear God and forget all the rest of my fears - as they are nothing compared to Him.

Great clarity on hell ... and to take that one step further, people don't just 'fall into Heaven' after they die, as if the way they lived has no bearing on their eternal 'home' ... I understand that we can't 'earn' Heaven on our own, but we have to live a life worthy of Heaven, and if we're totally honest, that's not necessarily an easy task ... we've got to be loving others, sacrificing for others ... ignoring people ('well I'm not hurting anyone') isn't enough

Eternity is a very...long...time. Having a healthy fear of hell is a good thing - points us in the right direction. Then we can grow in our relationship with God. As we grow in love for him and with him, we fear less. We become more confident. We become his love on earth. There is no greater joy.

Thank you for this, Matthew! It’s true that Hell really does indeed exist and there is a lot to fear in this life with both the natural and the negative supernatural forces that are at work (Satan) around and within us. But with a childlike trust and abandonment in the Lord who is all powerful and abounding in love and mercy, fear melts away. This life is a mere drop in the ocean compared to an eternity spent with the Lord in our homeland of heaven. We just have to cling to the Lord now and always and all shall be well!

As a convert coming Home to the Catholic Church 9 years today, it’s so refreshing to hear someone speak of hell. As a Baptist growing up, they scared the Hell outta ya. 😂🤣. Then Bishop Baron is claiming that we hope no one’s there. Well duh, no one that’s a Christian should want anyone to go there. This needs to be in our hearts daily. God doesn’t send us to hell we send ourselves there. But…..there IS a hell and many people go there, per Our Lady. She showed the little children it at Fatima and said poor sinners are falling like snowflakes and we need to pray for sinners to repent and turn back to God. Keep up the great work preaching Truth. 🙏🏻❤️

I totally agree with your comments about the importance of knowing that hell is real. It's important to know that there are consequences for not living a value driven life. Today's society is one that teaches entitlement giving little regard to living morally and ethically and is reinforced by a belief of not being accountable for those actions.

I also want to add that I believe why so many don't believe in Hell is because of Satan's lie of their being no Hell. Satan does not want others to know about Hell because they to will then walk away from Satan and run towards God for their salvation. God Bless and praise God for men like Matthew Kelly that tell us the truth of the scriptures.

Today’s teaching about Jesus’s warning to be careful of situations and people that can hurt both the body and soul is great advice to apply to my life! Hell is real and while I do not want to think about it, I do think of it often. When the Holy Spirit speaks to me between right and wrong choices, I know the path I should take but it’s not always easy. This is a good reminder when caught up in decisions or issues take the path that will protect your soul! I love the videos. I wish DC would have a daily one when Lent is complete.

I've heard how Mother St Teresa, when asked if she believed in Hell, responded with "I do....I just don't know if anyone is there." That reminded me of a powerful question posed by a former pastor who took us on a retreat: "Who is anyone to presume the extent of God's mercy!"
Marvelous teachings, both encouraging me to live a life according to God's will, hence not stressing over my final destination, yet accepting the reality that Hell is real, awaiting all who put themselves there.

My Endow group was talking about something similar to this with our discussion about St. Edith Stein's death. She knew what was coming and wasn't afraid, because she united her suffering with the cross, that her death might help end the darkness in the world at that time and knew that death is when we are able to go to the place that Jesus's sacrifice bought for us. If we all look at death that way, the evil one can never take our full being for his own.

As human beings we are prone to always making mistakes, therefore we are always aware that hell exists. However, God is omnipotent, and full of mercy. He takes into account the efforts we make to be better every day, to try to be better human beings. Every day we need to take stock of our character flaws, and apologize for our bad behavior. But always live with the confidence that our God is good and loves us. This is a reminder for my daily life. Thank you Mr. Matthew.

I have used Dante’s Divine Comedy for years to contemplate the last things. His model of Purgatory is a wonderful tool to prepare for confession and to do an examination of conscience. Everyone should make their own version of the trip to Hell as Dante did so that they are ready to climb the Seven Story Mountain and then ultimately to fly to Heaven.

IF we get to Purgatory, we are promised Heaven. Nothing imperfect can enter Heaven, so we just need to be "cleaned up". We, as Catholics, are so blessed to be able to confess our sins to our priests, so that our soul is as clean as it can get. My 35 year old son died, unexpectedly, two years ago, after only eight days in the hospital, but he went to Confession 13 days prior, and I made SURE he had his Last Rites (although he was unconscience) and he had a tiny piece of Viaticum the day before he died. I made sure that I did one last thing for my beloved son. My last wish is that he is in Heaven, right this minute, and my goal is to get there as well so I can see him again. I have Masses said for him on dates that were special to him; his wedding anniversary, birthday, date of death, etc.

Indeed, hell IS real! Look at the faces of the young Fatima seers who got a glimpse of the suffering and torment of hell. Years ago, I had a frightening experience after praying about a certain doubt I had regarding a popular trend. When I asked my parish priest for his theory, he simply refused to speak to me. He wouldn't return my phone calls and rushed off when I approached him after Mass. Later, he apologized... I was under the impression he was just as frightened as I was.

I have had priest tell me their is no Hell it is just a separation from God. I also have heard Bishop Barron state that no one will be in Hell. I only know what I read in the scriptures and I find there is a Hell and that is where the separation from God exist. Jesus warns us and it is up to each individual to make the determination of where they want to spend eternity after death on earth. God bless each and every one of you in your journey with God the Father, Jesus the Son and the power of the Holy Spirit.

So are we suppose to be afraid everyday or not? Does this mean I'm suppose to trust God always and I'll never be afraid or be afraid of being punished so I'll always do the right thing. I don't like using fear as an influence to how I live, I want peace and love to be my influence and it's hard to be at peace when I keep thinking about what happens if I do something wrong, and i hate it when people do this. I should be thinking about love and peace with God not the fear of what he will let happen if I disobey him. These teachings need to be made more perfectly clear to me because I want to feel a sense of security when I think of God not a risk and fear of what happens if i let him down.

Like St. Padre Pio said: "Abandon yourself into the hands of Mother Mary, She will take care of you." God bless you!

Do not live in fear. Going to hell is a choice people make by deliberately separating themselves from God. You won't make that choice. God will always welcome you whether you've disobeyed the rules or not. (Read the Prodigal Son. It was the Gospel reading this past Sunday, actually) If you understand the pure joy you will feel in heaven, you won't need to be afraid. You've chosen God instead of hell.

@@guitarslinger213 that's my favorite story and I remember them talking about it on Sunday, although I always felt like I would relate more to the jealous brother, I wonder if he strayed. But it does help, thank you

I think our response should be in proportion to the degree or severity of a thing. A phobia is an unhealthy or dysfunctional fear of something, but how many times have we heard tales of carelessness leading to the death of family or loved ones.
In highschool a class mate of mine at school stood up in an assembly to tell our class and school body the story of holding his dying friend in his hands. They were careless, in an suv, his friend was unbuckled, and the car flipped over... in a car accident.
I am not afraid to die. Nor am I afraid to die in car accidents, and thus phobic to drive. But spiritual death is caused by ignoring the voice of God in our lives. Israel had many chances to worship the true God. To give their hearts to the Lord, not Baal.
People can get it wrong, people can worship, sex, status, money, relationship, security, children, a job, work, or power to the degree that they turn from God.
Be not afraid is what the good shepard tells the sheep. And they hear his voice and Listen. I think the problem here is people think wrongly that there exists no scenario where a sheep refused to listen to the Shepard and was lost. Or a Disciple refused to turn back to God and was lost.
I feel Judas proves it can happen

No wonder so many people do not believe in Hell because they have been told everyone is going to Heaven. So sad that people are preaching this. We want the easy way well that seems to be the easy way. But Jesus also tells us that the road to Heaven is narrow and difficult and few people travel it. And the road to Hell is wide and easy. Jesus did not promise us an easy life He promised what was done to Him would be done to us. who follow Him.

The willful separation from God is a conscious choice to be forever alone. You will be in an eternal pod covered in filth. Time will distort as you are driven mad by feelings of dread. As time distorts, and you feel yourself getting closer to shock and oblivion, your conscious mind comes back just enough to forever feel the pure torture of loneliness only to contemplate "if I could only go back and tell God I'm sorry for denying him." The choice is NOW. Please, get yourself together and go with Christ. It truly is the ONLY thing that matters.

Our Lady of Fatima showed the three peasant children HELL. It is real! Evil people don't want to admit it, but that doesn't make their opinion true.

37% of Christians don’t believe in hell? That’s shocking to me. But surely the most hideous souls aren’t going to live for eternity in heaven when they have turned away from the teaching of Jesus and God. I’m speaking about those people who have committed the most horrific of crimes. It’s is the most difficult teaching when you think about those people that are decent people. They are good citizens, helpful neighbors, wonderful parents … but they have chosen to not believe in God at all. That’s the difficulty of this teaching. I don’t think it’s my place to judge if they are going to heaven or hell. It just makes me hurt for their souls because they flat out refuse to believe. And it makes me worry and want to pray for them. I pray for our free will to feel the peace of God calling to us so that we are magnetized to Him, wanting to follow where God leads us.

"Fear the one who can kill both the body and the soul in hell", who is that? Me! and that scares me. Evangelicals often ask the rhetorical question, "when you die, if God asks you why He should let you into heaven, what will you say?" This is not the question God is going to ask you, the question God is going to ask each and every one of us is, "Do you love me?" You cannot enter heaven if you do not love God, you would not want to be in heaven if you do not love God. Hell is real, but the person who is going to send you there is yourself. I fear that I will reject grace and choose something less than Love itself... Why, I know my tendency to selfishness and sin, and I am so gratefully for God's grace, love, and mercy.
I think the problem many people and our society have with the teaching of hell is that we do not want to accept responsibility for our actions. Injustice, selfishness, sin cannot be my fault - it is someone else's fault. Hell is a creation of God's love and mercy, when we die, if we are more in love with ourselves than God and neighbor, it would be more of a punishment for us to remain in their presence. God gives us hell, where we can be with the one we love, ourselves, apart from true Love for eternity and without love for eternity... This should scare us!
