Chris Cornell a awesome singer and back in 1991, when I was 25.The song Jesus Christ pose, those lyrics Should make a person stop and think about how they are living and what Jesus Christ our savior did for us going to the cross.

I remember the day that I bought Badmotorfinger. I bought the album because of Rusty Cage, but as soon as I heard this track... it was the standout to me. Not from a lyrical perspective, but from a groove standpoint. This one of their tunes EVER! Thanks for analyzing it and breaking down the lyrics.
This can be applied to this day and age and celebrities in Hollywood for example preaching to people about their beliefs. It is easy for them to feel a certain way from their gated community in a bubble from the working class etc.
This was an excellent analysis of the song! I love soundgarden but I hadn't listened to this one in specific, it was really cool to see you lay out the surprisingly Christian theme from a seemingly anti Christian titled song!
I love what your are doing. I am technically a Catholic Christian(do not practice, more atheist) but I am a fan of music and fascinated by the theological perspective you bring to music. I would recommend a song from a band from Québec(note that Quebec was very Christian before we started to become more atheist but we still feel the religious influence in alot of our music) the province where I live. The song is in French but if you want it would be a pleasure to translate it for you. The song is from the band "Beyond creation" and is named "Sous la lueur de l'empereur" which mean "Under the glimmer of the emperor".
Catholic Christian here! Love music too, and i think that there are many songs out there that would work very well to spread the message of the Lord(this one, ironically, is one of those haha).
Creed was exactly who I thought of when they were talking about music artists and their Jesus Christ pose! About 6 years too early to actually pin them but still they did it just the same.

Love is the answer... I know a lot of people say that and it can become trite, but “love covers a multitude of sins” and it’s simply the way it is. Chris Cornell was a musical and lyrical genius. A very humble man also. ✌🏼
Saw them at the Paramount Seattle on this tour and saw them with Janes Addiction, and Love and Rockets a few years earlier. Tremendous sadness when he decided to complete his life. His voice is scorching the sky with the Seraphim now. They made it big with LOUD LOVE before BMF. FOPP Is bad ass too. it the best for me is ULTRA MEGA OK. IF YOU WANT A SONG TO ANALYZE FROM SOUNDGARDEN. check out BEYOND THE WHEEL!.
373 before me... I want to say thank you for your introducing me to an awesome way to learn verses from the Bible. I love music and poetry and have loved Soundgarden for quite some time... naturally I dissected and understand the idea behind the poetry and meaning shared in their art... People need not judge others for their choices in faith. I used to be an atheist/ agnostic in my beliefs because so many others were trying to push faith on me in the way the felt it should be. Some feel more righteous than others and feel they are right and want to preach to others as though they have some divine right. Perhaps some share their beliefs for good reasons, or good intentions, but I feel some react negatively because of religious oppression. I am religious in many ways toward God, yet have not been given much insight into the Bible due to my running from religion. I am tired and need to go bed... lol I wanted to thank you both for a great video and I love your idea to share it with music and lyrics involved! I wish you the best end of the year and an awesome year to come! Peace and love 💕 Merry Christmas!
Again a great video! Nice conversation. I do like to suggest a video about Kamelot - Up Through The Ashes. It's about Jesus Christ's crucifiction trial, but seen through the eyes of Pontius Pilatus.
Thank you for giving the Salvation message. He who knew no sin became sin so that we might have the Righteousness of God. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved. It is a gift of God!
I remember this song coming out when I was in high school. It seems to me that he was railing against many of the tele-evangilists that were so prominent back then, Swaggart and Jim Baker to name a couple.
I'm not a christian and I doubt this the meaning chris cornell was going for when he said "like I need to be saved" but I think an interesting alternate take would be to say that these ppl are acting in Jesus' role but not actually sacrificing themselves so that they will not be saved, even though Jesus' already has saved humanity, which appears to be as yet another form of sacrilege (I'm not sure if that made any sense, I was having trouble articulating this thought but it was an interesting idea to me). I loved y'alls videos even though I am not christian learning more about a faith is always very interesting to me and something I'm very passionate about, much love!
Enormous fan of Soundgarden and was crushed by Chris' sudden/rather unexpected demise. Loved the review guys as always. Womder why they blocked this. Was it the God stuff they suddenly all try to erase or was it just a Soundgarden/Cornell family trademark thing? Bummer. I havent seem this video simce headbangers ball back in mid and late 90s
The song is more or less how celebrities are "worshipped" like religious figures. Sometimes you'd see celebrities standing with legs together and arms straight out to the sides, akin to Jesus on the cross. So it's not about religion directly.
Since Pastor Rob is a child of the grunge/alt rock/metal, could you perhaps give your opinion on songs like Sex Type Thing, Hunger Strike, Would, Them Bones, Say Hello To Heaven, Man In The Box, and the like? Just a humble suggestion. :-)
This song is about human beings. Talking about high archery looking down at people, So the singer "Chris Cornell" explaining to to that individual who do you think you are... You are no better than me. Dont pose as if you are almighty person, it is not your job. "Marilyn Manson" said this best about music- "Music is ART, it is not suppose to have just one meaning. It has many meanings to different people. Interpret the way you want it"
I think the "Would it pain you more to walk on water than to wear a crown of thorns, it wouldn't pain me more to bury you rich than to bury you poor" is in reference to the ego of celebrities. They love to be admired for their achievements/miracles, but don't like to suffer (Crown Of Thorns). It's certainly less painful to be admired and treated as a God than to suffer public rejection and mockery. Then, in the second line, Chris is reminding them that it makes no difference in the end- rich or poor, they will be buried. Death is indifferent.
Their first album was Ultramega Ok Then Louder than Love. So Badmotorfinger was third but like many other bands, there first album (s) went unoticed until the initial "big hit". Like Nirvana with Bleach (my favorite album by them) or even self titled album by Queens of the Stone Age. Anyway I'm rambling
i never thought this was in any way about "famous" people judging him. I always took it as he(Chris) was sick of Christians being judgmental of him and telling him that he NEEDs to be saved. Also that he didn't like the self-righteous attitude (pose) of these "Christians". I AM a Christian and fully understand why he would feel that way.
Thank You, Robert and Gauge, great analysis as always, that's exactly what Chris meant writing this song. About big dollar artists hypocrisy in using religious symbols as a way to paint themselves as somekind of martyrs or saviours, mocking them and asking direct question "do you have the balls like Jesus to sacrifice your life and fortune for others ?". Trivia: Chris was raised in a Christian school, then he went agnostic and when he married his second wife, he converted back to Christianity.
Ah man, this is easily my favorite soundgarden track. Because I've had this type of hypocrisy thrown at me though my life. It took years to learn to just walk away from those people.
Maybe future vid on: Far From Home - FFDP or even some theological testing reviews on Skillet, Red, Decyfer Down, or Pillar. Some great "Christian" rock acts.
Hey Pastor Rob, thanks for your analysis of "Jesus Christ Pose." Soundgarden is my favorite band, and Chris Cornell was my favorite songwriter. Their album "Badmotorfinger" was their breakthrough album that brought them their spike in success, but the band was actually formed in 1984, so they had two previous LPs before this one. I think your perspective on their lyrics is accurate in that, Cornell is targeting people who use the posture of Jesus, but on the inside they are hypocrites. I don't think he's specifically aiming at famous people, but that would make sense because there was Madonna's "Like a Prayer" video happening at around that time, too. But the song is mainly putting the spotlight on those are use the demeanor of Christ, noble suffering that convicts the viewer, to give off the false idea that he or she is holier than everyone else. So good job! Thanks for your analysis!
Not sure how old your son is, but I’m 21 years old. I’ve seen some of your videos that I have really liked and one of them was the “Zombie Eaters” reaction. It’s funny because my dad showed me Faith no More when I was young and he showed me “The Real Thing” as it was the only album he knew. I went on to listen to all their music and love them. I could be wrong but I think I remember your son not being familiar with the band when you showed him the video and now he went on to know about their other work as well. My dad got me started and now I get to show him bands he’s never heard and even albums from bands he loves that he’s never heard. Great cycle of music.
This isn’t about religion but about the humans that make themselves look like martyrs to get attention. Also those who act like they are a god for others to look up to and worship.
I love the groove and the riffs of soundgarden, but Chris Cornell was truly a singer-songwriter.. and in my opinion, his solo work shows his growth as an artist.
That was a very insightful discussion. No really. Really! I'm not lying. Why do you think I'm lying? It WAS! Wasn't it? It wasn't? Ok, fine, it wasn't.
I'm not religious but it's cool to see appreciation for the music from people who are, instead of treating the music and the fans like there's something wrong with us :P
You guys should definitely do "Like a stone" by audioslave (of which chris cornell was a member) it definitely has a religious subtext to it and it would be interesting to see your opinion or thoughts on it
Soundgarden did not coin the phrase "Jesus Christ Pose". Back in the 80s (before this song came out), there was a skateboard move on the big ramp called the Jesus Christ Pose where the skater would go up the ramp and fly through the air with arms spread out (holding the skateboard in one hand), and then moving the board back under their feet before landing. Soundgarden took inspiration from the name of that skateboard trick and wrote lyrics around that theme.

This can be applied to this day and age and celebrities in Hollywood for example preaching to people about their beliefs. It is easy for them to feel a certain way from their gated community in a bubble from the working class etc.
That’s an excellent point.
This was an excellent analysis of the song! I love soundgarden but I hadn't listened to this one in specific, it was really cool to see you lay out the surprisingly Christian theme from a seemingly anti Christian titled song!
First song of theirs I ever heard and still my favorite after 30 years
Man that voice, such a pure natural talent.
Thanks guys for very enlightening perspective I'm not a religious person I'm more of a spiritual buddisim phlosophy hippie lived the grunge years as a teenager the music really helped shape form who I am it's always been a part of me and so has jesus ty for opening my eyes and ears to a different new apartment valuable experience love what y'all are doing keep spreading the good word and please pray for me to find me way back home when it's my time to be led by the Sheppard
Love is the answer... I know a lot of people say that and it can become trite, but “love covers a multitude of sins” and it’s simply the way it is. Chris Cornell was a musical and lyrical genius. A very humble man also. ✌🏼
I was 16 years old and I still love it!
(My dad was only 53!)
Chris grew up going to a small Catholic school, so was steeped in those teachings as child.
I think he was talking to ALL self-righteous Christians
Saw them at the Paramount Seattle on this tour and saw them with Janes Addiction, and Love and Rockets a few years earlier. Tremendous sadness when he decided to complete his life. His voice is scorching the sky with the Seraphim now. They made it big with LOUD LOVE before BMF. FOPP Is bad ass too. it the best for me is ULTRA MEGA OK. IF YOU WANT A SONG TO ANALYZE FROM SOUNDGARDEN. check out BEYOND THE WHEEL!.
Chris walked the walk and talked the talk. What movie was he working on? What happened to him. This song is prophetic
I am tired and need to go bed... lol
I wanted to thank you both for a great video and I love your idea to share it with music and lyrics involved! I wish you the best end of the year and an awesome year to come!
Peace and love 💕
Merry Christmas!
Great lyric analysis pastor!
People forget how heavy this song was both in terms of the message and of course how it sounds.
Badmotorfinger was their 3rd full length. They had 2 full lengths and a couple EPs beforehand
Love the content and the messages you out out there through these! I recommend you doing” In the Name Of God” or”As I Am” by Dream Theater
Awesome song and break down of the lyrics. Great job guys
Hurt -Rapture
Truly devastating. Please do this!
Yes!!!
THIS. absolutely love this song.
As always an excellent video thank you!
Not a Christian, nor am I very religious for that matter, but I love your videos. I’d love to hear your thoughts on infant annihilator.
i never thought this was in any way about "famous" people judging him. I always took it as he(Chris) was sick of Christians being judgmental of him and telling him that he NEEDs to be saved. Also that he didn't like the self-righteous attitude (pose) of these "Christians". I AM a Christian and fully understand why he would feel that way.
Cornell is a legend with a voice from the rock gods
I wanna hear you play more guitar. I LOVE that video
this song is about people with big egos feeling like their presence is a gift he never cared anything about religion
No one sings like you anymore.- RIP Chris Cornell
Ah man, this is easily my favorite soundgarden track. Because I've had this type of hypocrisy thrown at me though my life. It took years to learn to just walk away from those people.
Show me how to live by Audioslave would be a great one to react to!
Maybe future vid on:
Far From Home - FFDP or even some theological testing reviews on Skillet, Red, Decyfer Down, or Pillar.
I just heard a song today by Local H called "Hands On The Bible." Would love to hear your take on that one. Big fan...keep up the great work!
Iconic voice
Badmotorfinger was actually the bands 3rd album. This being the first single of that album.
Such a great band.
I love this song
I'm not religious but it's cool to see appreciation for the music from people who are, instead of treating the music and the fans like there's something wrong with us :P
Audioslave - Like A Stone. Spiritual lyrics I think but I’d like to know what you think.
You guys should definitely do "Like a stone" by audioslave (of which chris cornell was a member)
it definitely has a religious subtext to it and it would be interesting to see your opinion or thoughts on it
Matthew 7:15-20
I've heard the song so many times but while reading the lyrics on screen I thought I read " looking at me like i need to be shaved" made me chuckle
🤣🤣 that’s how my wife looks at me. Lol.
@@roberthoughton7127 lol, mine too! Keep up the great work for the glory of God! Love you guys!
The drums on this are tight af
Soundgarden did not coin the phrase "Jesus Christ Pose". Back in the 80s (before this song came out), there was a skateboard move on the big ramp called the Jesus Christ Pose where the skater would go up the ramp and fly through the air with arms spread out (holding the skateboard in one hand), and then moving the board back under their feet before landing. Soundgarden took inspiration from the name of that skateboard trick and wrote lyrics around that theme.
They did however coin `looking California feeling Minnesota’.
Altar of the Unknown God by Theocracy needs to be added to the queue. Godspeed!
