  • Time to do a bit of maintenance on the work truck. The old Ford's 7.3 liter Powerstroke diesel is having yet another oil leak issue. It has gotten bad enough that I actually have to finally do something about it. Follow along to see how we fixed the issue of oil leaking from where the dipstick attaches to the oil pan WITHOUT having to remove the oil pan.
To accomplish this, we used Dorman part #904-423 which is available through Amazon at the following link amzn.to/3c5ArsV
Purchase the part through the link, or click the link, then search to do any of your other Amazon shopping, and Montana Garage will make a small commission to help improve the channel content. If you make any purchase through the Amazon link, let me know and I'll get some FREE stickers headed your way! Thank you for your support.

Everyone please go check out Trifive Talk here on UA-cam. I WILL BE FEATURED ON THE CHANNEL WITH AN INTERVIEW SOON! DETAILS COMING ON THAT! It's a new channel, so I cannot add a direct link. Lock tite probably would have been a stellar idea. Did you use the little tool or make something to hold the inner part in place? I'll keep an eye on it I guess. Thanks for watching.

Nice video, but anyone watching this and having trouble with removing the dip tube from the housing on the pan wants to know an easy way to remove it. Take a pair of vise grips and clamp it to the tube itself as hard as you can without crushing the tube. If your not mechanical inclined enough to know how thight to make it, start off clamping it loose, then open the vise grips so they are loose, turn the tightener like1/8 turn and clamp back down. Repeat this till it's good and tight but not crushing the tube. Then just hit the vise grip with a hammer. It will pop right out no problem. Then just my opinion, I wouldn't put an o ring back in there. I would clean the inside and out side of the the hole in the oil pan and the dip stick housing itself. Then put a bunch of rtv silicon were the o ring goes and on the back side of the nut were touches the oil pan. Put some lock tight on the threads and thighten it up. International says to fix it this way instead of using an o ring because sometimes the o rings swells up so much it could distort the part were the o ring goes so much it won't seal correctly. And I would use the gray rvt or the black. I use nothing but the grey rvt on everything with no problems. With the gray you can put it on and tighten up right away and be done. You don't have to wait for it to tack up like the blue and red, and the gray is rated stronger.

I am into day 3 of an oil pan / dipstick tube leak. I went today to Brondes Ford to pick up these parts.
F4TZ *6751*A CONNEC SP-OR 1 $25.33 that is the nut on the tube fitting.
    Also the blue oring
    3C3Z*6753*AA GASKET SP-OR 1 $11.46
AND A NEW COPPER OIL DRAIN PLUG WASHER/ GASKET
    3C3Z*6734*AA GASKET 139D 38 $6.91
My Company has an account with This local dealer. We get 10 to 15 off these prices.
These parts fit a 2000 F350 7.3. I have 490k. This is the 3rd leak in a row.... lol every 2 days. I will report back. The back up plan is to put an Extreme Diesel knock off fix. It is a great fix if it doesn't work. After watching this UA-cam i have great hope... even bought the Dorman kit.
    Thanks you and God Bless

After posting I thought about it and when I do this repair in a couple weeks when I get time, I'm going to use rvt on the theads as well. It will hold good enough, plus with silicone on both sides of the pan and on the threads thats not going to leak and there will be no o ring to swell up again in the future. That's what happens to these trucks. The vibration loosens the nut. Oil gets in there then the oring swells and causes a leak. There is a company that makes a replacement part that puts the o ring on the outside of the pan, but they want you to drop the old part into the sump. I have no proof but I think the engine vibration will eventually move that old part around enough to make a hole in the oil pan. As a semi mechanic and now driver I have seen some crazy stuff. I had a front mud flap rubbing on a fuel tank from the wind going down the road rub a hole in the tank till one day I came into the yard and all the diesel was on the ground under the truck because the mud flap cut a hole in the fuel tank.

    1. Remove radiator cap.
    2. Pull out powerstroke powered vehicle that is having issue.
    3. Pull in known good powerstroke vehicle or comparable but more reliable vehicle of choice.
    4. Re-install radiator cap.
    5. Test drive and check for leaks.

Yep!!! Had two new Fords in our family that needed work. Dealer refused. One vehicle needed it's first oil change, the dealer kept re-scheduling the appointment..after 9 months, I wound up doing it. That car was sold shortly after.
The second one was a '86 V6 Cougar. It had a blown intake manifold gasket. Oil poured out the back of the engine, onto the bell housing. I was under the car with the dealer and they REFUSED to acknowledge the leak...
After the warreny expired, THEN they noticed the leak...I told the dealer, what leak? I don't see any leak!!! It's off warranty now, I don't see squat!!!
