      Maybe Jon Stewart (his previous boss) being not only vegan, but owning a farm animal sanctuary finally made an impression on John Oliver.
      Some of his other videos do cover aspects of animal agriculture.

      John did his last show on an online scam called “pig butchering.” It has nothing to do with pigs or butchering. But John made a joke about actual pigs still getting butchered that seemed as if it was there to remind us that this still happens and is not a good thing.

    Loved this roundup, Marielle! It really brightened my day. I am intrigued by the change in Beyond's formulation, as someone who buys the new Impossible reduced-fat ground beef when I can find it because vegan mince is so greasy. I had no idea what Palworld is, so that was an eye-opener . . . As someone who gave up meat over thirty years ago, I can honestly say that it is something that has just become easier and easier over the years heat in the UK. Both through more products being available in shops because of more products being introduced and established products changing recipes to one that is at least vegetarian (which is what I am) and a general change in attitude amongst most of the older generations…though you’ll always get those who insist that you should just “get a bacon sandwich in you”.
    I will say though that the fact that Gen Z can seem as though they are leading the way is in part due to Gen X either bringing them up with a meat free diet or making great strides in the available meat free products…and of course Linda McCartney, who started a range of meat free products back in 1991 and before her brand became available, most meat replacement items were only really available in health food shops, hers was the first vegetarian brand I remember seeing in a supermarket. Which of course due to her products selling well, supermarkets were open to carrying more ranges to the point where now all supermarkets carry a decent range of vegetarian and vegan products (of every category) with the varied price points, that suit most pockets (for us here in the UK the cheapest way to be vegan or vegetarian is to just buy vegetables and pulses to create your own dishes).

      @@TotallyForkable she definitely did, though I’m not sure that younger vegetarians and vegans will ever really comprehend just how much of an impact the very talented lady had on vegetarian and vegan culture here in the UK. Those country pies were the first meat alternative that you could get from most supermarkets, that felt like it was aimed at making you NOT feel like the odd one out at the dinner table.
      I’m glad that you found the vegan scene in London pretty impressive, when you get to my age it feels like it really wasn’t that long ago that the only vegetarian options you’d find when eating out were Mushroom Stroganoff, Vegetable Cannelloni, Vegetable Curry or Cheese Salad and you’d almost never find a vegan option…except maybe the curry. I know that my brother and I had a lot of difficulty finding vegetarian options when we visited some of the South East States back in ‘93. Though I do believe it has vastly improved in the US too in the intervening years, which can only be a good thing…I hope 😊

    You could almost argue Palworld would really make you think about animal exploitation because you go out and capture them and then enslave them which im guessing makes the player think about what they’re doing.
    I haven’t played that game but from the footage I could kinda see it causing people to realize animal exploitation.
    I have played pokemon before and I don’t think I’m confronted with what I’m doing as much as that palworld footage seems to cause a moral question.
    There seems to be a comedic element but I’m guessing a lot of players also go “this is messed up!”
    But I don’t really know I’m not interested in the game.

Now I do like role playing as a vegan when I can, but I feel like this may help address some cognitive dissonance people may have with regards to animals in a way that does not make them fragile.

    • @alexs.5871
      @alexs.5871 2 місяці тому +3

      It doesn't translate 1 to 1 of course, but the media we consume does indeed shape our world-view, the way we think. If that wasn't the case propaganda wouldn't exist, right?
      While obviously the decades old narrative of 'he played violent video games so obviously he became a school shooter' is ridiculous, there *are* ways that games and all forms of media influence us. Calling out harmful status quos and stereotypes has to be allowed if we want to have a constructive diaglogue about veganism, social justice and similar topics.

    • @plerathon
      @plerathon 2 місяці тому

      I agree that propaganda and video games both influence the way we think, but the difference is that propaganda is meant to convince people of misleading claims about reality, whereas video games are typically meant for entertainment and don’t make claims about reality. Based on the available data, people understand this, which is why the crime rate among people who play violent games is comparable to average, in fact there’s a slight inverse correlation
      So the extent to which video games shape our worldview is limited to aspects like problem solving, dexterity, visual skills, contextual awareness, alertness, reflexes, pattern recognition, etc., and does not affect what we consider to be moral behavior
      To your point about calling out harmful status quos, I totally agree that we should call them out when they are being used to justify harm to others. But _references_ to them are not going to go away, and I disagree with censoring them, especially since they can reduce harm in some cases (such as the inverse correlation mentioned above)

      I appreciate you sharing your perspective! This is a conversation my boyfriend and I have had often. For him as a lifelong gamer the violence doesn't stand out to him at all, whereas for me I find violences in games pretty upsetting. I believe that the violence doesn't necessarily translate to real life, however I do feel that when it comes to violence against animals, certain mechanics can reinforce the normalization of animal exploitation. i.e. in Stardew Valley, you can acquire cows/goats and milk them, which is done in a completely humane-washed way removed from the realities of the dairy industry. I fear this reinforces the "magically producing milk" misconception most people have about cows. Also as a vegan in games I find myself avoiding harming animals as I find their reactions to being hurt too realistic (i.e. in Breath of the Wild), but I know some people go out of their way to kill every animal they see, and I wonder if that translates to people's real world views on animal exploitation.
      I've thought about for a long time and I have gotten so many interesting responses on the Palworld topic that I am thinking this needs to be its own video at some point!

    Thank you for the good vegan news roundup. We definitely need to be reminded that progress is being made. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if John Oliver is either already vegan or is leaning in that direction. Jon Stewart, his friend and mentor, has become vegan and runs an animal sanctuary. He also featured on Rip Esselstyn's podcast along with his wife Tracy. Implication - Jon's educated on vegan ethics and on the health benefits of WFPB and probably mentioned it to his pals. I have a perspective to offer on Palworld's violence towards animals. I own the game, played a lot of it, and really enjoy it (even as a vegan). Just like violence in other video games, I'm able to separate fiction from reality; I understand that what I do in video games does not represent what I would do in real life. I think it is fair to wonder if this "fiction detachment ability" desensitizes people from cruelty in real life, but personally, I really don't think it applies to me. I've played video games most of my life, most of which involve vegan-unfriendly content, and yet I decided to become vegetarian in my tweens on my own volition. I became vegan a few years ago because I learned more about cruelty in the dairy industry and I had the means to buy and cook my own healthy meals. I adopted the lifestyle through reasoning.
    I can't speak for everyone, but I think games are primarily a form of entertainment and rarely are they meant to sway people's values. Some attempt to push some sort of philosophical belief or lesson, but usually the game is up front about this in some way or is known for it. When people play violent games like GTA, Palworld, Halo, etc., they know they're escaping reality and actions they do there aren't harming sentient beings capable of suffering.
    If I were to respond to anyone interested in confronting the violent content in Palworld, I would point out that people who enjoy games don't necessarily agree with what their characters do in said games. And, what is interesting is that some non-vegans care a lot about their pals and are very uncomfortable with the idea of butchering them or overworking them. If you know anyone who plays Palworld and doesn't like seeing pals mistreated, it could be an opportunity to have a good conversation about it! Maybe they care for practical reasons (like not wanting to be inconvenienced to make or buy medicine), but they may also have compassion for their cute fictional friends. If they do, you could ask them if they also feel a similar (or greater) compassion for pets, and then farm animals.
    I think hoping or wanting game developers to align with your values is fine, but the most popular and successful ones will continue to be ones that have great gameplay and dopamine-inducing mechanics -- factors which are independent of what political or moral message it has. People will also naturally be adverse to a game that is trying to preach a message, especially if it's obvious. If a vegan-friendly game is made, it will reach the most people if the gameplay is solid and the tone is palatable.

      And I say that as a life-long gamer too.

      Agreed. I think it's fine to call games out for things that are offensive. Something to be cautious of is turning people away from your message if the effort to call out the offense comes across as overreacting.
      My angle would be using the game's content as a starting point of a conversation, rather than initiating a boycott, or demanding an apology from devs, etc., at least in this particular case.
      Ultimately, we're trying to help people become aware of their own compassion towards animals and urge them to align their values with their consumer habits.

    Very nice video lass thanks for sharing, Palworld is nothing new in the gaming world of course, I mean look at the entire classic Pokemon concept, beat up an capture free living Pokemon and force them to fight for your entertainment an glory etc, as a regular gamer since the early 90s I always find ethics in the pixelated world very interesting especially looking at it through a Vegan lense, hopefully we'll get a popular sanctuary themed game soon! Patrik Baboumian is currently working on a animal liberation videogame called "Uncage" fully Vegan team an narrative. Really hope it does well!🤞🎮🍀

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  2 місяці тому +1

      I never knew how much Pokemon relied on exploitation until recently with the Palworld comparisons. Very much agree about the ethics in the pixellated world; it seems one has to leave their real-world ethics "at the door" in order to have fun in most games.
      I had no idea about Patrik Baboumian's game; that's really cool! I think having specifically liberation-focused games would be great; it would also be great to have fun casual games that happen to not include animal exploitation! Apparently Stardew Valley at one point included slaughtering animals but Eric Barrone, the developer, a vegetarian and environmentalist, said he removed it due to his ethics--“I didn’t want to have that sort of violence. You give the animals names, pet them, and a little heart goes above their head and stuff, and then you butcher them? It just felt wrong. It didn’t jibe with the feeling I was going for with the game, so I cut that, and I don’t regret it.”
      Still, the game involves exploiting animals--using them for wool, milk, eggs, etc, as well as fishing. These cutesy games tend to humane-wash these activities, but I'm ready for a game that doesn't involve them at all.

      @@TotallyForkable Spot on and fully agree with you. There's a growing community of gamers playing games as ethical/Vegan as possible etc I think consistent coherent animal friendly titles aren't too far away gaming wise.🤞 Patriks project is ambitious an difficult to balance a serious ethical message to a fun gaming experience but I applaud the effort as video games are bigger than music an film combined and it's a potentially very moving and inspiring interactive medium that our movement really hasn't unitised yet. I think a reason beyond meat failed when it partnered with fast food chains was because MOST places offered vegetarian burgers, not vegan. After modifications to make it vegan, they were hardly worth it. Not to mention how they couldn't guarantee cooking them on separate grills. Too bad. I have a problem with video games that hurt animals/creatures. I like Minecraft but I think its ironic how they say in the game to "be kind to the animal" but in order to get the energy you need in the gameplay you need to eat meat because the vegetables don't give you enough lasting energy in the game, which teaches kids that meat is better to eat than vegetables, and that hurting animals is actually cute and fun.

    dude I'm vegan too but Palworld is a parody of Pokemon. It is supposed to be funny. Do we cry over Happy Wheels for being too violent? No, of course not because the violent aspect is part of the game's humor. Finding Happy Wheels funny doesn't make anyone want to kill people. The same goes for palworld. Obviously it's supposed to make you feel sorry for the Pals in a satirical way. That's exactly why I concider Palworld to be a pro-vegan game, while Pokemon is a rather anti-vegan game.

    There's nothing about Palworld that really would affect people honestly as there's still yet to be any research to prove video games incite violence.

I do think there's something to be said about the normalization of violence against animals, especially in subtle ways like fishing, milking an animal (a la Stardew Valley), etc. These things tend to be shown in a humane-washed and unrealistic way, not showing the repercussions for the animal, only the benefit to the player. Were you affected when Mufasa died in the Lion King? How about when Bambi's mom was killed? Just because something is pixellated doesn't mean it can't incite a human emotional response. This is what storytelling does, and video games are a form of storytelling. For those who are against violence toward animals, a pixellated, animated representation (complete with sound effects) of an animal being harmed and/or killed is understandably going to be unpleasant. Aren't there other ways for a player to have fun besides bludgeoning and enslaving a sheep? I think so, and to deny that betrays laziness and an utter lack of creativity.
