The film is quite great, I'd recommend watching the whole film -- not just this scene. Bravery in many action films is often depicted as the hero going into enemy camp, fully armed and ready to do battle, but in this film, singing Christmas songs and carrying a small Christmas tree into the no-man's land where one could easily be killed is another level of bravery entirely.
Maybe...someday there will be peace. My grandmother Clara used to sing "Stille Nacht" as a lullaby to me. She was an Austrian Jew. At that time, Catholic mass was in Latin, so I learned those Latin lyrics of "Adeste Fideles" as well.

I served two combat tours (26 months) in Vietnam and 2 Christmases a well. Each year there would be a 24 hour cease fire or "Truce" if you will. She's originally German, but became a model/turned actress that I think lived and worked in France, then eventually the US. Daniel Bruhl was in there as the German officer, who you also saw in "Inglorious Basterds". He's a really good German actor that became big in the 2000s with a couple really good German flicks that got international attention, "Goodbye Lenin" and "The Edukators".
The feeling from Joyeux Noël seems akin to when Germans meet for the Berlin Wall anniversary. I dont know how well received Paul van Dyk and Johnny McDaid's performance was from 2009. Clearly music brings humans together. Jack Tueller, WWII - usa taking back Normandy, tells a similar story from WWI's Weihnachtsfrieden / Trêve de Noël event. Tueller using their trumpet, playing a German love song, in the hopes to connect with Germans right after allies had secured Normandy coast (June 1944)

At one point in the film the senior German officer indicates that he doesn't celebrate Christmas because he's Jewish. Oof! You know the next several decades aren't going to go well for him, assuming he survives WW1.
What I wonder, how were any of these soldiers able to go back to shooting at each other again. Cause 1914 or even 1915 wasn’t the end of WWI. That Germany started to use lethal gasses in 1915 demonstrates how much more violent this Great War would become. Shame that this ceasefire didn’t hold.

Biss, you have mentioned many times how you enjoy older performances where the artist dresses nice and sings unsupported, may I suggest "Mack the Knife" by Bobby Darrin, back in 1960, when he was young I think he did it best, and he wore a Tux, it is a difficult song to sing well, Frank Sinatra was the only other person I've heard do a decent job of it, you will not figure the whole story of the song from the lyric version, but should get lots of help in the comments. :)
