Ted Neeley is just amazing, and he's still singing this on stage. The song out of context can be difficult to understand, but as you can guess from the title "Jesus Christ Superstar" it's based on a passage from the bible. Matthew 26:42
    - He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”

This is in the context of the show Jesus Christ Superstar. The play tells the story of Jesus from the perspective of his followers, specifically Judas. It asks questions about the story most take for granted from the gospels. “Was Judas really wrong it was he just a pawn used by god without his consent?” “Was Jesus really god?”
This song is immediately after Judas is found to have betrayed Jesus, and Jesus is accepting that he is about to die. He’s afraid and asks if there’s any other way. This song just explores the emotions jesus would be feeling about being so close to death.

It's difficult to appreciate the full affect of one song taken out of context from an entire musical. This particular scene is roughly half way through the entire film version of the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar". It was a successful Broadway musical brought to the big screen in 1973. I'm not sure what problem you have with the meaning of this unless you are either unfamiliar or just offended by the story of Jesus. This is where in the New Testament, Jesus is experiencing the "Agony In The Garden" as he wants to stay up all night and pray. He asks his disciples to stay up with him and they've all fallen asleep. That's why it opens with him singing, "Will none of you stay awake with me? Peter? John? James?" Ted Neeley does a great job in the role of Jesus. You should watch the whole thing if you don't mind musicals. Carl Anderson (RIP) is even better as Judas.

If it wasn't obvious, it's Jesus talking to God, his father in the garden of Gethsemane when Jesus had doubts to his purpose and the reasons he had to die for everyone's sins.

I love this song, because it explores Jesus's Prayer from Mathew 26:36-56: "Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch[a] with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will." I think it really captured the sorrow and anxiety Jesus must have been feeling knowing he was going to be arrested and crucified. My favorite version is actually Ian Gilian's from the original concept album, but Neeley gives a powerful performance.

Jesus went to Gethsemane to pray about his death. He was afraid to die but desired God's will to be done. His words were "“Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” The "cup" meaning the “cup” of God’s infinite, burning judgment poured out on human sin, which Jesus died for. Jesus actually did truly fear His own death and this is the prayer in song form.

The meaning is very simple. Jesus wants to know why he has to die. So God let's him see his death and what it will mean. And guess what? He's afraid like any human being would be. What makes this scene so moving to me at least is that he accepts his fate and understands the magnitude of it. Now, understand I'm not a Christian or religious in any way. I just admire courage when I see it.

Jesus came to earth as a man. This video shows how, as a man, he was facing his own fears about his coming death. He begins to question his fate and even shows a human need for proof of purpose rather than just faith.

This moment in Jesus' life represents His anguish in the Garden of Gethsemane where he prayed one of the most intimate prayers we ever would see, a conversation between Father and Son. I always liken this to being the true Lord's Prayer. The one He taught us was to be used a model for how we were to pray. To remember to be thankful and give glory to God, to ask for our needs and the needs of others, for our forgiveness and the furtherment of the Kingdom. He warned right before that not to use vain repetitions. So we took the model and turned it into a vain repetition. This moment, shown here in Jesus Christ Superstar, Jesus in the Bible prays for Himself, His followers, the Church that is to come, and for God's will to be done and accepts His fate on the cross. This is the Lord's Prayer. And Ted's acting here along with his singing is phenomenal. Sorry this is so long.

It is straight out of the Bible!
In His moment of weakness and doubt, Jesus asks G-d the Father to let him live, not to suffer one of the longest and most painful deaths ever devised. How can you not know how to feel about it, if you are a faithful Christian?

It had to be His choice to sacrifice Himself, it was his excercise of free will. He had to offer Himself for all of us. And he doubted his sacrifice in the Gospel. If God killed him it would not have mattered. Jesus had to know the cost and as a human, He understood what He was giving up for all of us. Jesus wasn’t Superman, He was just a man, which is what makes the sacrifice for us so monumental. That’s how I have always seen it.

If Jesus was only a man and not the son of God, this is how he would feel. However, having said that Jesus was a man. He felt things. However, this portrayal makes it more relatable to man. And the odd thing is that religious people hated this musical.
But if you read the Bible, you would see that the lyrics really do portray how Jesus might have felt.
Jesus knew he had to die to save mankind, but like all humans, he was questioning of it was really worth it to be mailed to the cross. He did not want to. In churches, you take the blood of Jesus giving your comitment to God
However, the opening lune of Gethsemane is very similar to what it says in the bible to take away thus cup. In other words, he was overwhelmed with sorrow and at this point felt really human.
In the message, which is the bible on everyday language it says " My father, if there is a way, get me out of this. But please, not what you want. You, what, do you want?"
So when Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice wrote Jesus Christ Superstar, a Rock Opera, Tim Rice penned the lyrics for Gethsemane. Since it it about Jesus before he died told from the perspective of Judas who was really lacking faith at the beginning of the musical, when Jesus was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane before the day he died, this song was to capture Jesus' personal struggle of having to die for all of mankind's sins. And I think the song really dues capture Jesus' sorrow and human side of him. But on the song Jesus realizes at the end that it's not about his will but God's will and what God wants.
So in the end it's a really artistic a deep song about denying one's self and taking up their cross. While Christians do this metaphorically, Jesus had a physical cross as to pay with his own blood fur the sins of Mankind.
And even though Tim Rice or the creative team may not be religious, Tim Rice's lyrics really capture Jesus struggle. I know Andrew Lloyd Webber grew up Catholic.
But the irony is that most religious groups hated this musical and even protested against it. But I really think it captures the human side of these biblical characters.

My brother, I'm with you on this. I've enjoyed this whole production of Jesus Christ Super Star many times in the past and Ted Neeley has a great voice but after reading the Bible for myself it's clear to me that although Christ had a difficult night in that garden, he knew exactly what he was doing and why. He fulfilled prophecy and was the sacrificed Lamb of God who died for the sins of the world, and he knew very well that his reward was the human race, all who would believe in him.

Jesus knows that God had a plan about him: he must suffer and die, but his vulnerability and fear come out in this night right before his arrest. It's a order from above, he can't escape, and he goes from rage (WHY me?) to despair and provocation to God (just watch me die!).
It's a very human Jesus Christ.
I suggest you to also watch Juda's death, you may find the same rage against God and the feeling of being just a chess piece in His hands.

The video the scene takes place after the last supper. Jesus is praying, having a conversation with God more or less saying "if there is a way that doesn't involve me dying can we do that instead. Jesus asked this of God 3 times in the Bible and God told him no every time. Jesus had to be the sacrifice for our sins. After this Jesus goes back to his desipales where Judas shows the Roman soldiers who Jesus is by a kiss on Jesus's cheek. And Jesus's says "with a kiss you betray me. "

Jesus Christ Superstar is about the last days of Jesus's life and Judas betrayal. I would also recommend Heaven on their Minds by Carl Anderson (Judas) if you want more context to the musical.
The song explores how Jesus felt when he went off to pray alone in the Garden of Gethsemane before his crucifixion. It portrays Jesus as man burdened by his destiny. His fear, his pain, his anger, his sorrow, his frustration. It really brings home to me how much he was willing to sacrafice for us. It doesn’t matter who you are, if you knew you were about to be tortured and crucified would you not be terrified? Jesus is no different, but in the end he has the courage to see his "mission" through to the bitter end.
It's a song full of compasion for Jesus.

Jesus is both fully human and divine at the same time. He took the cross of his own free will, could have turned away, but willingly went to his death. This is portraying his time in the garden of gethsemane where he prayed while his apostles fell asleep, and right before Judas arrived with the soldiers to arrest him... remember he was so burdened that he cried and sweat blood. It shows that he took the cross in the face of all the pain, fear, suffering he would endure. He chose it, he chose us. Courage is not the absence of fear, but deciding that something is more important and acting despite it. This shows Jesus compassion and courage despite his human frailty.

Now a Flesh and Blood "MAN", Jesus had his doubts.
He was asking God: "Why" him, "why me"? Why'd you "have to" choose me, to HAVE TO DO this type of work, couldn't you find someone else, PERHAPS, someone Better? THIS THING you ask OF and FROM me, IS, an ENORMOUS feat. I don't think i can, what IF i can't, maybe "I" don't want the job, etc's, etc's, etc's, so on and so forth. Jesus prayed so HARD, probably EXTREMELY nervous and anxious as all get out, that his sweat, "WERE LIKE DROPS" of blood. Notice: When blood drops, it's thick, and heavy. THAT'S HOW HARD and HOW HEAVY and DEEP Jesus was praying. Pleading and Begging. But

I feel the meaning was that Jesus was afraid at the suffering he was going to have to face in going through his death but in the end resolved to endure it. That's my feeling. I wonder what you thought the meaning was when you said you didn't think you liked the meaning.
I don't think it is easy to explain this song while doing it justice. This is Jesus purely as a man. He has no insight of God's plan. It is also a commentary on Christian scripture. Like in the song, clear on when and how, as this Jesus knows, but not clear on why. If anything it is about sacrifice and martyrdom. Suffering on command of god without conciliation, for the greater good.

Jesus was the Son of God in human form, sent to us to die for our sins. We are saved, our salvation is forever preserved because Jesus Christ's sacrifice. In one moment, at the beginning of the end, Jesus had a major conflict 'of doubt and pain' of whether to go forward with it, because of his human, in the flesh, side. This is a major, pivot point in the story of Jesus Christ, in the Bible. Also, I might ad it is a lesson, for us to remember, what was done for us, and why we need to do the same for others.
