As an Atheist, this entire Rock Opera, especially Gethsemane, reduces me to tears every time I listen to it and I've been listening to this for over 40 years. It's nice to experience a believer's reaction to this masterpiece. First to comment!
That reaction is the Holy Spirit working on your heart, check out CS Lewis and Lee Strobel both were atheist trying to disprove Christ, Lee ended up writing the Case for Christ ua-cam.com/video/rbTSyqbUz1A/v-deo.html
Same. A great story is a great story.
Same. Atheist since birth. Everything I know about the Bible is from this Rock Opera. I love it so much. It’s insanely good. Funny how it used to be seen as blasphemous but now Christians love it.
@@AwayGoalRule It is a great story. Not particularly Biblically accurate but an interesting and very well done portrayal and brings up some interesting ideas for consideration.
@@thomasriddle7005 Pilate's wife was the one who had the dream.
And that part where Judas says in that one reprise, I think? Where Judas sings that Jesus was just a man is a problematic part to some.
As a religious person I never saw anything sacrilegious about this music. I must have seen this more than 20 times and even bought the Lp. I can sing the whole movie and it moves me to tears almost every time. Love everyone of these actors voices. Amazing movie that gives you a lot to think about how our Savior gave up his life for our salvation. What a wonderful gift.🙏
1000 thumbs up. Excellent in every way. I also had the album.
Same! Lots of people I know don’t like how Jesus questions God during some points.
💯
I worked in a video store back in the 1980's and I'd play this movie while I was working because I love the music. Some customers would tell me this was sacrilegious...and I just don't see it.
It's a religiously neutral movie, so well done.
Nobody will ever do it like Ted. He breaks your heart.
I dunno. Michael Lee knocks it out of the park.
One of the best singing performances ever. So powerful.
The best one ever.
Agree!!!!😊❤
I'm 69 years old, I was 19 years old sitting with school friends in the audience the 1st time I saw Jesus Christ Superstar when it 1st came out in theaters. This movie has stayed with me and in my heart all these years, I introduced my daughters and grandkids to it over the years, they ALL LOVE it! Some years back my daughter and her husband took me to see the live play in Sacramento with Ted Neely leading the cast, I was reduced to tears to actually see him sing this song. One of my best gifts ever!!
I saw Jesus Christ superstar live on stage with Ted Neeley apparently it was his last season that he was doing it. It was remarkable and he could still hit the notes.
Totally agree. I saw him on the farewell tour twice. First in Columbia, SC and when I saw how well it was done and that his voice hadn't lost anything over the years, I got all my kids together from various parts of the country and headed to see it at Wolf Trap National Park in VA. While they don't have my level of feeling for the whole thing, they were all quite blown away by the show and especially Ted Neeley's performance.
I was honored to see Ted Neeley perform as Jesus 3 times. It was always amazing show.
I saw him and Carl Anderson in ‘93. At a certain point, now, 50 years later, I feel as much Ted and Jesus when I listen. A guy who spent fifty years dedicating his life and career to spreading the gospel through music.
Ya’ll are lucky
50 years later, he can still hit all those notes.
Love, Love, Love this movie! Ted Neely did a wonderful job in this - it was a rock opera. It was so controversial at the time. It was written from the point of view asking the questions that have been asked by the agnostics forever - Why? I cry every time I see this, and I can sing every word.
I know every word... every nuance... every phrase... and each time it feels like an old friend... and brand new ... at the same time....Love! Love! Love! this too!
Ted still performs this role 49 years later . He’s so awesome ! I’ve met him several times. I’m a huge fan! 💜💜💜💜
I had the absolute privilege to see Teddy Neely do this live in the 90’s and early 2000’s and he was brilliant and I cry every time I hear this. So much emotion!
The LEGENDARY Mr. Ted Neely recently performed "Gethsemane" in a 50TH ANNIVERSARY celebration of the EPIC 1973 Film "Jesus Christ Superstar." (Thankfully, a video of his performance can be found on YT).
Mr. Neely's sheer POWER, the BEAUTY, the STRENGTH & EMOTION in his voice which he maintains STILL TODAY... at the AGE OF 80... (yes, EIGHTY!!!)... is STUNNING... & absolutely staggers the mind!!!
Mr. Neely's exceptional portrayal of Christ in "Superstar," especially his exquisite, simply breathtaking performance of "Gethsemane" has ALWAYS moved me to tears.
FIFTY YEARS LATER... nothing has changed.💕🙏💕
I cry every time. Just this much of his agony makes me hurt. During Passion of the Christ I had to hide my face. It hurts so much every time.
You will really appreciate the film. Carl Anderson will blow you away.
Ted Neeley's performance -- particularly of this song -- is (IMO) unsurpassed. Spectacular!!! So glad that you chose to react to this. When I was in junior-high, my best friend had the soundtrack album of the original stage production (which was, I think, in London). I had the album totally memorized before long, Then when the movie came out, I saw it in the theater with another friend. And to be honest, I think that the singing was better in the movie than on the original stage soundtrack. I know every word and every note by heart, and the movie sets and costumes are so creative and evocative. Great film!
Yes. Only he and Ian Gillian (of Deep Purple) can belt out this song effortlessly. Ian Gillian is the singer in the original 1971 London album. Ted Neeley is the one who starred in the movie and he is still going strong!!!
@@japaninomomma6910 Steve Balsamo is the best IMO
He's beautiful got to hug him!❤
All the music in this show is amazing. 🇨🇦
Every time, all the time, this and the entire movie makes me cry!
I saw this movie in the theater when it came out . When the movie was over , everyone just sat there without getting up for a few minutes
I love this whole musical! I saw Ted Neeley in the 25th anniversary of the movie in the live show. It was fantastic!
its now time for the 50th .....2023-1937
every sunday this is how i pray i listen to this and there will come a day
Been listening to jcs since i was 4 years old. Back in 2017 i saw Ted Neeley playing Jesus in jcs with an Italian cast in the Netherlands. He was around 70 years old then i think, and still so much emotion. Just love this rock-opera!!!
@hugobrannlund : I saw this also in Groningen in 2017 , Ted and that Italian cast; so beautiful dung by Ted Neely, I loved it so much. His voice was still beautiful and he hit the highest notes❤️
Neely and Ian Gillan were the best ever for performances of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. Neely is preferred because his acting and emotional energy are without equals! D-Gib...i'm so happy you were able to hear this performance! BTW...check out David Gates and BREAD performing AUBREY.
He knew what was coming...and he still did it for you and me and all his followers...GOD Bless! Amen!🙏🙏💙💙
Got to see the movie! It's so great, the best of Andrew Lloyd Weber's musicals. This song is his conversation with the Father and having doubts doesn't make him any less holy.
I saw Ted perform this role on stage, seen Jesus Christ Superstar twice live. Once with Carl Anderson and the 2nd time with Corey Glover in the role of Judas. Spine tingling! Love thus musical.
Same here had the chance to see Ted and Carl perform together.
I saw Ted and Carl too. No words. Blessed.
That is something I wish I could have seen live in my lifetime. RIP Carl Anderson.
Yeah I'm not religious at all, but the beauty, love and passion in this movie is amazing, I really wish people would react to it.
I grew up in church & when this movie came out I was in high school & no longer practiced my religion. I was intrigued about the movie after the song "I Don’t Know How to Love Him" sung by Yvonne Elliman was released as a single record played on the radio. At that time I didn’t know anything about the opera version or movie, I just loved the song. I did go to the movie to see it & it changed me. I never really understood how the crucifixion happened, I felt that I finally "got it". The movie still makes me cry & I definitely recommend you see it ✌️☮️
Devin this is so powerful. When Lp came out my mom bought the Lp it included the lyrics and I memorized all lyrics. Went to a second hand store to see if they had it. He said it comes in and gone immediately. Bless you and your family ❤️
I was about 10 or 11 when Jesus Christ Superstar came out and I remember people saying how anti-Christian it was. But I never got that, and I've seen the film several times. Yvonne Elliman is also in the film and you might want to react to her song I Don't Know How to Love Him(she plays Mary Magdelene in the film). Also, have you ever seen Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ? That one and this one are two of the best Jesus movies I've seen.
I remember my mom watching this and it was always a fave as a small child, the whole musical is worth a listen... Even if it is on your own free time.
Thank You Brother Devin for posting this reaction to start us off really thinking about the Sacrifice the Lamb of God gave us so we could be Forgiven of our Sins, so Death has no Victory over those Saved in Christ Jesus. I really love this song and the Garden of Gethsemane, as it really captures the anguish of Jesus Christ struggling to fully accept the CROSS and accept the Cup of Suffering he must endure for us, the same kind of human emotions we would have. the Rock Scream by Ted Neely also cannot be matched despite hundreds who have tried to do so in their Superstar plays; Ted Neely still tours with the musical to present day. I encourage anyone who hasn't seen the original 1973 Jesus Christ Superstar to view it. It was actually filmed in Israel in the Holy Sites just as the 6 days war was coming to a close, that is why there are tanks and fighter aircraft in the scenes.
Very emotional and powerful performances in this movie. Great setting in the desert. They picked the locations for scenes which are sooooo cool. You will cry. Pontius Pilot, in the movie, feels pity and guilt. The death of Judas....great scene. GOTTA WATCH THE MOVIE I am an atheist and this movie brought me to tears.
I'm 55...this soundtrack is with me all the time...I saw the film when i was a kid ...but saw it again in school at 15...by that time I was a musician and couldn't believe the power of this song and Ted Neely's Vocals...I never tire of it...
Not bad singer considering before this he was a Drummer in a band in Texas
The rock opera is AMAZING! I was a small child when this was released in theaters but I grew up sharing it with my dad and we loved it together. Ted Neeley is amazing and the man, Carl Anderson, who plays Judas Iscariot is equally amazing! There is a scene between them when he is doubting Jesus and confronting him and Jesus answers him back and he is stunned and moved by the answer. The looks and the chemistry the pass between the two men as they clasp hands and then move apart is very moving. You can see so much struggle in Judas' face. Amazing Scene. it's in the song, Everything's Alright, from this movie. it's intense, I think you'd love it. But this song, Gethsemane (I only want to know) is my favorite. I was blessed enough to see both these men onstage in their parts before Carl Anderson died of cancer. It was incredible both times! Not a dry eye I'm the house and standing ovations.
I was so blessed to meet the incomparable Ted Neely a few yrs ago at local Jesus Christ Superstar. He was the most humble spiritual man. It was like meeting Jesus. And Cory Glover was STELLAR as Judas and I got to meet him too, awesome cool guy! Definitely check out the movie. Ted is aging but still has the pipes!!!!!!
You need to watch this it’s amazing.
Ted Neely has so much passion here. Jesus Christ Superstar is a must watch. It is painful, but it is something that needs to be seen.
Beautiful
God bless you brother!
Amen Devin ❤
Just flat love your reactions, and the care you take with each one 🤗🤗
I like what you said, Devin, He knew what was going to happen. I will always remember my pastor talking about the Last Supper, "It was then that Jesus took the bread, broke it, and GAVE THANKS... He knew what was going to happen, and still he GAVE THANKS! And with the wine he again gave thanks and praise. I speak those words whenever I take communion. You will absolutely love the movie, Devin. Carl Anderson plays Judas Iscariot and his number, "Heaven on Their Minds" will blow you away too. I am 56 years old and I could sing every lyric of this rock opera before I was 10 years old. You are going to be hooked!
The movie is awesome, very controversial in the day.
The first concert I ever attended was the touring company of JC Superstar in Jacksonville, Florida. I still own the LP. Awesome.
My fave movie of all time and seen it hundreds of times.
Great reaction and commentary. Ted Neeley delivers in a powerful, moving way. Recently, it was also released by a You Tube artist from Brazil, Dan Vasc. His range is unbelievable. He is a metal singer and does a strong, spectacular performance.. I was first introduced to him with his "Amazing Grace" performance. We have all heard Amazing Grace 1000 ways, but I tell you this is the BEST i have ever heard. It's had over 5 million views since being released April '23. You will not be disappointed.
I think Dan Vasc's performance of "Gesthemane" is THE most powerful vocally and his performance is unmatched! I saw Jesus Christ Superstar the rock opera when I was 15 years old with the Youth Group in our church - I am now 65! I know it very well as it left a lasting impression on me. I had the album, listened to it daily! That all being said, I believe Dan Vasc's performance of "Gesthemane" far exceeds any other performance!
@@pamelamccollum5216totally agree. Unmatched!
Imagine 50 years ago, a 9 year old seeing this movie. I already knew the music before, but seeing the performances on the big screen...amazing. My children grew up to this. We watch it every Easter. Thank you for your reaction. I always love seeing someone's face when Ted hits those high notes.
I have seen this movie numerous times. This was called a rock opera back in the day. Tommy by the Who was another other. Besides the movie they also did theatre productions and I got to see Ted Neely in Jesus Christ Superstar in the theatre production. It was excellent. I would most definitely recommend the movie.
WOW I am so glad you did this, even though I'm now in tears...
I just asked you on another video, a few minutes ago, to react to Heaven on Their Minds. It's AMAZING! Praise Jesus
I saw his last performance in Boston at the. Wang, it just wasw amazing and you could cry as he sang and you felt his power. The whole theater shook when he sang this. but the most amazing was the transformation. He can make teh worst song beautiful and send shivers down your spine.
Thank you Devin, my favorite scene from the movie. God bless you.
I was one of the disciples in the play at the local community theater. This show will touch you.
Beautiful, thoughtful reaction!
You absolutely have GOT to see the Ted Neeley movie Jesus Christ Superstar!!! 🙏Was life changing for me!
Watching this brought tears to my eyes,I've been a Christian for many, many years and this movie was one of the stepping stones that got me to the point of accepting Jesus into my heart. The visuals, vocals and music are absolutely outstanding,I can't say with any certainty that it is an anti-Christian movie or not but God used it in my situation to draw me closer to Him.
Omgggg seeing this for the first time vicariously is amazing!! Goosebumps!!
Devin I had the honor in the 90,s to see ted in this play and 5 other times i feel like I was blessed to see him in his prime. I too shed a tear everytime I hear and watch this play I have seen the movie 100's of time as from the 70's this has been my favorite movie of all time
Please react to more songs/videos from this album and movie. It is a masterpiece and I'm glad to see more creators finally reacting to it. Thank you.
Preach!!! You are a kind angel.
I got to see Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson (Judas) a couple of times when the Broadway touring musical came through. Dennis DeYoung from Styx was playing the part of Pontius Pilate in one of the shows. It was phenomenal.
This movie when it came out in 73 it had a very profound effect on me as a 12 yr old girl as it still does today.
Blessing to you and all!
This was my favorite version of this song until I heard Dan Vasc perform it on his UA-cam channel. The depth of emotion he added was amazing.
Thank you for your great reaction! Amen
oh you have to see the whole film
holy funk!
Thank you... you get it...I love you♥️🎶✝️
I just started watching your reaction videos today. Such a breath of fresh air to have someone not afraid to express their faith. Amazing song and very astute reaction! Bless you Brother!
I remember as a teen the youth group did a service playing this album. The older congregation was silent and appalled and I had a conversation with my mom and proved this all matched to the Bible. I learned and understood more from this than in all the years sitting in church.
You should check out the Last Supper as well. Judas and Jesus have some fantastic inter-reactionary singing in it. Good stuff!
Definitely one of the best parts of the movie, so emotional
Yes- I love it and have had album since 70’s . It’s amazing!
Since the movie was released the lyrics in "I only want to say" were modified. "God thy will is Hard but you hold every card" have been changed to "God thy will be done, take your only Son".
As a Christian. It shows us Jesus fully human and fully divine. His human side had to be terrified. His divine side spoke directly to Our Father. Just beautiful.
thank you for sharing this. ❤️ God bless you brother 🙏
I love Jesus so much
Love your knowledge and your passion x
Lovely reaction
This movie is amazing - Ted Neeley as Jesus is soooooooo good and would easily be the best part of any production but Carl Anderson's Judas steals this movie! He is simply astounding!
Both of my sister had the albums, one from the stage production and the other from this movie. I was just a kid, but I knew the words to every song.
Amen❣️💥
Raised catholic. I'm an atheist.
All the goosebumps.
Saw the movie 50 years ago. A tumultuous time. It's more important today than it was even then. I've watched this 3 times in a row, counting this one, and I still can't watch it dry. Being fully God and fully man, could Jesus have "changed his mind"? A terrifying thought.
Im an atheist, have been all my life. But man, I love Weber and Rice’s work, and Ted Neeley is my favourite vocalist ever. I had the honour of recently seeing him finish his tour in Bologna, Italy. What a show. What a man.
I was 13 when i listen this opera rock, and i love in act. Now, i'm 58 and still love
I saw Jesus Christ Superstar in 1973. I was 9. My mother and I watched it at that drive in. They are having the stage production March 29th and 30 in Sioux Falls SD. At the Washington Pvillion. I sure hope I get to go. My Birthday is the 25th of March. I have thus movie, the album and know all the words to all the songs. It's Jesus's last week palm Sunday to the cruxifiction. It's the only movie about Jesus that was actually filmed in Isreal. It's about actors, playing characters, as actors they all fins their own way. You definitely need to watch. God bless
✌️✌️ & ❤❤ you should do a reaction on the rock opera. Every song is a winner. NORMAN JEWISON DIRECTED AND ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER WROTE THE MUSICAL SCIRE AND I can never remember who wrote the lyrics.
I have this Rock Opera. I watch it again sometime. It's a powerful movie
Quintessential..... performance..... this is the all time best!!!! I love this movie.. I have seen the play with original cast... and best is still movie/play with Ted Neeley as Jesus, Carl Anderson as Judas and Yvonne Elliman as Mary.... this movie/play with this cast... made me happy, sad, angry and fullfilled.. in this movie/play I always see and understand the Man... and that makes it universal and timeless... and this scene... showing that like all of us Jesus had doubts and fears and found strength in faith to face death... the least we can do is find the strength in faith to face life....
I was a teenager when this came out. I remember weeping at the Crucifixion. At that age I finally understood How Much Jesus Loved Me and Everyone of us, only hoping for our Repentance and Our LOVE In Return.😢😢😢😢
The last part of that scene where Ted is facing the setting sun and ‘psays “take me now before I change my mind” is so strong. It gets me every time.
I love the 2012 Arena Rock Tour. It's on Broadway HD
Growing up in a very Catholic home, my mother loved this movie, and so of course it's always been a favorite, now you have to remember the whole purpose is this is the hippie era, and the question purpose of the movie is "What if Jesus came today not back then", even Judas in one part asks why didn't you come when it would be easier to spread the word, that he came in a backwards time..Ted Neely, has the most amazing voice, only voice I coule compare to him, is Axle Rose from Guns and Roses, they can split their voices and there are not many that can, this is probably the most moving part of the movie and actual opera/musical, the other would be the live made in Italy...This is an amazing movie..
I saw this movie as a teenager when it came out, of course there was a lot of controversy because people thought it was blasphemous. I thought it was great because it really shows the inner struggle of Jesus. While this movie revolves around the days leading up to and through his crucifixion, the real story here is about Judas IMO.
Heat reaction, you really should watch the movie - imaging a group of hippies on a bus driving though the desert and they decide to make a movie with virtually no budget! It’s so well done, the music is incredible - kudos to Andrew Lloyd Webber for creating this musical!
What I love about JCS, is it drives home the Christ was a man.
If there is a God, I would want this one.
Jesus Christ Superstar is an amazing film. I worked at a theater when that movie came out. I've seen it more than 100 times. I cry every time. This scene just rips at my heart. Then the scene where Pontius Pilate had him whipped, it really kills you. Absolutely amazing movie. Fabulous cast!
Been a fan of JCS Rock Opera since I heard the original 1971 album in 1973. Have met Ted Neeley in person twice, once when he was doing a tour in the early 90’s and last 2019 for his JCS movie sing-along and meet up with fans. And yes, have been watching the movie and listening to the soundtrack for the last 50 years of my life and still going ….
I saw this in the theater when it was released. It changed me fundamentally. It touched me so deeply as a young teenager. I bought the album and still have it. I know every single word to every single song. It was a beautiful movie and nothing had ever been done before or since that can touch it.
This is a realistic rendition of what the Agony in the Garden must have been like. The warring in Jesus's mind between his Divinity and knowing the plan and the redemption it affords the world and the Love Sacrifice of the spotless Lamb of God. Then the humanity of Christ who struggled to understand if the price is too high, if it will even make a difference in the end, and fearing the pain, not the actually dying. Then, after a night alone in prayer, feeling that abandonment by his apostles and to a degree, God himself, is it any wonder He sweat blood? I think we need to remember that Jesus had freewill, just as we do. But unlike us in our broken state, He made the freewill decision to fulfill the will of His Father and leaned on His perfected faith in God.
The theology of St. John of the Cross describes this internal struggle as the Dark Night of the Soul, where the soul struggles with little to no sensible consolation and walk by faith.
I remember seeing this movie in the theater as a pre-teen, thinking I was going to see a rock music show. I can't express the effect it had on me or how it opened me to a relationship with God except to say that when it was over, I was stunned as were a lot of the other people in the theater. Some were weeping.
You DEFINITELY need to watch this show.
What made this movie great-is they cast actors/singers from the British and New York stage productions. They picked stage actors. Not Hollywood A-list stars. That's why Phantom and Le Miserable were lacking. I saw this movie as a teenager and loved it. Have it on DVD. it still holds up-because they used people with talent.
Jesus Christ, Superstar was written with Judas as the POV. It shows Jesus as a human, but it lets the viewer decide who Jesus is. It’s a great show for getting human feelings that we all have.
“The Lord” Sanctuary of the lonely, stupid & the picking grounds of con men & scoundrels for centuries. This is a wonderful musical. Brilliant, beautiful. Cant you just enjoy it for what it is?
When this came out our parents' were elated that we were getting into anything Jesus. Love it, know it and still listen to it. "I don't know how to love him" is fantastic.
