i saw the movie in 1974. i was 10 years old at the time. at the time, i thought it was a bit heretical. the older i got, the more i realized that it wasn't. the songs are what i would imagine jesus and his followers would feel. the original cast in the movie was perfect. i can't imagine anyone else singing the songs. the emotions in their voices is what sold it for me.
I read somewhere that he was also sick that night and the cast was also worried that he might not be able to sing Getsemane … but he did (that’s also why they were crying in the wings
You should see the movie!!! His performance is amazing after all it's a Rock Opera the whole thing is a banger!!! He was much younger in the movie also.
Watch the movie, and you'll see HIM doing this, on screen and in his prime. The locations used add even move impact. I guarantee you will LOVE it !!! I'd LOVE watching you react to it.
Ted is still touring and singing this song at 80 and is still phenomenal. Still hits those incredibly high notes. I get chills/tears every time I watch him perform this song.
I first saw the movie when I was 12 yrs old and Ted Neeley's performance inspired me to get into muysical theater and made Jesus real to me. I always cry whenever I see or hear Ted Neeley perform this song and have never seen anyone play Jesus part better than him in all my years. I am now 61 and had the pleasure of meeting Ted Neeley in person last year!!!! Let me tell you he is the nicest genuine person you will ever meet. To look into those eyes and the energy he gave off was like meeting the messiah himself. He was gracious enough to sing with me part of the temple song while my daughter recorded us on her cell phone. What an honor!!! I'll never forget. God Bless Ted Neeley Always!!!
Those are the cast members, just as blown away as everyone else. Ted had not sung this in rehearsal, but gave it all in his performance in the show. The cast was rejoicing.
Ted Neeley originally played this role in the movie, Jesus Christ Superstar, back in 1973. I can't believe he's still doing the role. The production was remade a few years ago with John Legend and it is Phenomenal!!
I was not lucky enough to see it on Broadway, but I went to see the movie in a theater in the '70s and I'll never forget it. My best friend had a black light room with a glow-in-the-dark Jesus Christ Superstar poster on the wall. I wish I had that poster. It was psychedelic. You bros. would have loved it! It was amazing getting to see you enjoy this the way you did!
This was Ted Neely's last performance before he retired (that's why there was footage of all the other cast members in the wings watching him) Gethsemane is a beautiful song and I really hope you can see Steve Balsamo's version... beautiful beyond words xxx
Actually it was his FIRST performance of his final tour which lasted almost 4 years (was supposed to be a year.). No one thought he could do it… but his voice only got stronger. The last performance of the Farwell tour in Boston has a bootleg out there… it’s INSANE how his voice was so much stronger. ua-cam.com/video/iu5zHmFSGLk/v-deo.htmlsi=HnfIoX5heFnX3DgL Check it out. It’s ridiculous.
It's always good to see you are well my brothers. I seen his last concert and his last tour doing Jesus Christ Superstar when he was in his sixties. There's nothing like it before or since. Until next time stay well
Try to imagine being a teen watching this movie in the theater back then ... nothing like it. YOU got goosebumps from one song, how about throughout the entire movie? There were many singers equally talented in the movie ... and the musical before, and movies and stage shows after, you HAVE to be good to sing these songs.
I saw the movie when it was release 5 times in 2 weeks. I'm agnostic but I think this is the best movie about Jesus. If you haven't seen the movie I highly recommend it. Every song is incredible. I was lucky enough to see Ted Neeley here in Montreal around 15 years ago, on his last year performing. Incredible.
The clip you watched was part of a longer documentary of putting together this production of JC Superstar which was about to go on tour in 2006. Ted Neeley (the singer) played the Jesus role in the movie version back in 1973 (33 years earlier) and in a number of stage productions after. What made this performance especially notable was it was after the death of Carl Anderson (who played the role of Judas in the movie with him and also in a number of stage performances after) and Ted refused to sing this in any rehearsals because he didn't want to do it without Carl. This performance on stage was his first time singing it again. He's not in his best voice here (you can find him singing it "better" in other clips more recent than this where he's older still) but he does put a lot of emotion in this one.
Years of singing in this high voltage style has given his vocal delivery a lot of wear & tear... but he is the quintessential 'original', giving this song the ultimate template of this epic song from the classic rock opera... however, watch Neeley's performance of this song in the 1973 film...
Now, you need to check out the entire 1973 film! Ted is still touring, having screenings of JCS, & even having others from the cast, join him on occasion.) He’s an incredibly easy-to-talk to, great human being! Enjoy!
Unbelievable performance paired with the songwriting geniuses that are Tim Rice (lyrics) and Andrew Lloyd Webber (compositions). They were barely out of school when they wrote the score for JCS. The mind boggles.
This song always shakes me to my core. The idea of a son bargaining, pleading with his father, begging to not have to die this horrible, horrible way. Whether you believe the story to be true or not, just heart wrenching.
I was just 14 yrs old when in school a teacher brought into class a record player and played the original stage production on vinyl. The whole class silent throughout. Ian Gillan [ Deep Purple ] was Jesus, on vocals. I still have the original vinyl album I bought later....Then along came the movie. Ted Neeley this time played Jesus. A brilliant movie very clever how it starts with a bus full of actors getting off the bus and changing into their costumes....Then the movie starts with the most incredible song by Judas "Heaven On Their Minds" Wow ! - A clever ending too as the actors get back onto the bus - but who's missing ? Superb movie guys....& the original record with Gillan is brilliant too.[ Remastered on cd ] - That performance on stage was extraordinary. Thankyou for showing it.
Obviously Ted Neely owns this role.,,he’s earned it all these years he’s done it and committed his life to it. Back in the day when the album came out Ian Guillian lead singer of deep purple sang the role of Jesus Christ his version is awesome I’ve seen now they do have some video on UA-cam of him.
This was the first time he sang it since carl anderson passed, after having sung it at his funeral at his request. In a way, this performance looks not only like Jesus coming to terms with his death in the story; but Ted coming to terms with Carl accepting his own passing through ted's confrontation with god for him; almost like ted is begging him for an explanation why he had to go. What a moment. You can really feel the passion
There is an performance he dose when he is 80 years old and it’s just as powerful if not more so then when he started out playing this role. Absolutely phenomenal.
I saw Jesus Christ Superstar in the early 90s with Ted Neeley as Jesus. There is nothing like having seen him live. I can appreciate that some people prefer Ian Gillan's recording, but Ted was purely jaw dropping in person. Gethsemane was the greatest live vocal performance I've ever experienced, and I've seen many amazing singers. I was able to meet him after the show and he was as wonderful as you would imagine someone who had been playing Jesus for 20 years would be. Lol
I saw the 20 year anniversary show in Baltimore and Carl Anderson and Ted Neeley actually blew my mind, heart and soul! Also I was lucky enough to have run into the entire cast after the show and had drinks with Jesus and Judas. Lovely memories.
Oh my Gents, thank you so much for this truly iconic performance. Ted was much older than when he sang it in the movie but did himself so proud. The whole soundtrack to Jesus Christ Superstar is filled with great songs. Another notable song is when Judas started to doubt the movement - Heaven On Their Minds 1973 Carl Anderson from the movie.
This whole opera was and is so well constructed. It gave a personal touch to the characters. I first heard the Ian Gillan performance so it is near and dear to my heart. As an atheist I found this to be more compelling than all the hours of scripture I endured as a child.
Wait. I thought Gillan was in the stage production only, which was recorded and released separately. The one in the brown cover. Yvonne Elliman was in the film version only, with Ted Neely.
@@HidingFromFate Ian Gillan + Yvonne Elliman + Barry Dennen aka - Pontius Pilate were all in the original stage production & appeared on the original record - Then in the movie Ian was replaced with Ted Neely and Yvonne & Barry were the only original cast to be in the movie thus being in all three...Stage/ Record / Movie ...& of course Movie Soundtrack.
Ted is great singer and fantastic actor, obviously. You should listen to his first version from 1973, when he was young, believe me. But, first man who sing this, man who imagine this, who invented this high note on "why" - was Ian Gillan. Amazing singer, one of the best. This was in 1970. Listen to that please and give him honour.

I performed as “Herod” in JCS with a fantastic company. I saw this song performed at least 8 times per week.still, no matter how many times I hear this song, it still brings me to tears. The film version of this tune is my favorite performance. Compare them😁🎶
I've been watching the movie since I was a kid back in the '70s and still watch it today. Such wonderful funkiness! I was also fortunate to see Ted Neeley live in the 2010s. It'll be part of my life until the day I die.
Ted Neeley is amazing, no question. But you also need to listen to Ian Gillan sing this song! It is brilliant and showcases his spectacular and moving voice (one of the best singers in rock history).
I hung out w him once after a show , he's rarely out of character, late into the night, after a few drinks i thought he was Jesus. This performance was late very late in his career, voice was laboring, back in the day he was spellbinding, powerful voice. You need to see clip of him early on. Him and Meatloaf are good friends
Find the full length movie. Watch it. I am not a religious person, but I love the movie, and the soundtrack. First saw it on the big screen in '73, when the movie was first released.
Saw this live in the 70’s and again in the 90’s...Dennis DeYoung from Styx was Pontius Pilate for a few seasons and awesome! Ted Neely was phenomenal. This musical and others in the 70’ s were all so good. Live stage vocals are not a studio- you get one chance, not several. ❤️🎼
The rest of the cast are getting emotional because he's reprising the role many, many years after his first performance in the film, which was absolutely amazing.
This was when he was 63 and was clearly struggling on much of the song and he was still amazing. But you need to hear how he did it in 1973 when he was around 30. He was phenomenal.
What a movie that was. I remember it when it came out. Such amazing performance by Ted Neeley. Please please on your own time watch the full movie. You think this song was electrifying? Hang on to your seat belts. Ted Neeley and Yvonne Ellman( sp) is ........ then come back on your station and let us know. I to this day consider this and the play " Tommy" by the who to be top 5 in my book ever
Ahhh was hoping for this reaction. Such an emotional song. A son knowing his father wants him to die and he is filled with fear anger and finally succumbing to God’s will. The tears were flowing. Thanks that was great! Also have you heard Deep Purples Ian Gillan 1970 version of this song?
The entire original album is fantastic, written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber who have created many famous Broadway musicals. Even if you don't review it, you should listen to the whole album privately, the words and music are a masterpiece. Several different great singers. The most famous song is "I Don't Know How To Love Him" by Yvonne Elliman. Ian Gillan of Deep Purple sings the Jesus parts (including this song) on the original album.
Ive seen this movie 100’s of times…since I was 10 when it came out. We grew up with the beautiful album. Have seen Ted Newley in JCS and several other times. P.S. The best onstage performers with the scream are metal bands. Check out Sebastian Bach in Skid Row I’ll Remember you
Wooooooooow. Just wooooooooow. Yeshua knows, that his father wants him to die for you and me and the whole world. But he says Yes to this great plan! ❤ Ted Neeley in the role of Yeshua /Jesus Christ is just incredible!
Ted Neely definitely gave a phenomenal performance but you need to hear the 1970 Original Superstar album. The lead singer (Jesus) is Ian Gillan, lead singer of Deep Purple. No one can touch his vocals, not even Ted. (due respect) The whole album is a classic concept rock opera.
Gillan is exceptional but I still am much more moved by Neeley's version. His phrasing, the character of his voice is seasoned, as is his intense, believable performance, being the great actor he is.
My finger just went from scroll to screech! I’ve loved this rock opera since I was 10. I must know every note and word. It’s all brilliant, but to me this song is a masterpiece.
You have got to see the original movie from 1973. See the whole story. If you think this left you speechless, imagine the whole story. When I saw it in the theatre when it first came out, the audience just sat there speechless when it ended, some in tears.
Growing up in the 70s there were so many great songs from musicals. Godspell, The Wiz, and one of my favorites Hair. You need to check out the video of the song Easy to Be Hard from the movie Hair.
Ted Neely was 30 when he starred in this play on Broadway. He was 63 when he did the performance in this video. Pretty amazing!
The voice has change a bit. Listen to it from the Movie from 1973.
Good enough for 63 years old, however doesn't come close to the 1973 movie version. Ever.
He was 29 when he made the movie

Watch the entire musical. Theatre can transform your world.
The power of great music and real voice. There’s nothing like live theater. #Talent
Ian Gillan did the original not a version!
, he has been performing this Rock Opera since it was released…in 1973!
I had never seen this and I have tears and chills too. Thank y’all for bringing beautiful music to us☮️♥️
So powerful. WOW
Ian Gillan sang the original. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!
My great uncle Norman directed the movie version of this stage production.....amazing show, even for an atheist like me.
Well worth watching the film. Love your reaction.
Wow!! I remember the movie, but I haven't seen this in ages. Great performance. Thankyou, Bro's.
Look at his original film version !
you should listen to the original album = sung by ian gillan from deep purple.
You need to hear his original song from the 1973 film Jesus Christ Superstar. This was great, but his voice was much stronger back in the day.
Wow. You guys gotta see his earlier performances! I saw him in the early 2000's and he was a God.
Ive seen this movie 100’s of times…since I was 10 when it came out. We grew up with the beautiful album. Have seen Ted Newley in JCS and several other times. P.S. The best onstage performers with the scream are metal bands. Check out Sebastian Bach in Skid Row I’ll Remember you
Goosebumps...everytime
Great Ted Neely 's performance
Masterpieces
Ted brought all the theatrics to the role. Ian Gillan rocked it.
I'll cry
Wooooooooow. Just wooooooooow. Yeshua knows, that his father wants him to die for you and me and the whole world. But he says Yes to this great plan! ❤ Ted Neeley in the role of Yeshua /Jesus Christ is just incredible!
Please listen to the movie version of this song. Incredible!
Better: watch the movie entirely 👍
Totally 100% agree
It was huge! When do you show to us a little Georgian rock? And thanks for the good wish, Kriste aghsdga!
Neeley hits me deep every time ... :) Peace!
Powerful. I saw this stage production when I was 16. Thank you Jesus for dying for me. You are my Lord, my Savior, my Treasure.
I respectfully disagree with you.
I’ll put my time and money on Ted Neely.
@@JTizzle8386 same, Ted give me emotions
Gillan is exceptional but I still am much more moved by Neeley's version. His phrasing, the character of his voice is seasoned, as is his intense, believable performance, being the great actor he is.
Wow! I just watched the DVD minutes before you posted this. Thank you guys. ✌️♥️🎶
Movie came out in mid 70s. it's worth a watch !
I will repeat what others have said. You need to hear the original by Ian Gillan of Deep Purple.
