Terrible idea: do a Nuzleaf-only challenge, name it Nuzlocke, and whenever people ask for a Nuzlocke challenge, point them to that video
I actually kind of love this
MDB please see this, this is AMAZING lmao
This might be a really good April's fool challenge >:3c
Having done a Nuzleaf only run myself, I second this notion. Nuzleaf has a surprisingly good TM list, so he could have some fun with it.
And yes, calling it Nuzlocke or Locke would make for a great April Fools' run.
A M A Z I N G LOLOL
I'll never not find it funny how you can flip Shroomish's face and it looks like he's planning something devious

I turned my phone around when I read this comment and legitimately started laughing out loud.

Kantonians: That's a strange looking Oddish.
It's a Hoennian variant 😅😅
Yeah... That Oddish looks odd-ish
@@SpeedyTempowell, you won the internet.
I think this might be the first time ever "Safeguard" was a problem.
Fun Shroomish fact, Breloom cannot learn Spore so you need to hold off evolving Shroomish if you want to have a Breloom with Spore
Except in BDSP, where Shroomish is postgame anyway and you could just use a Heart Scale to get Spore on it once you catch it.
can't you just use a heart scale to get it anyway? i remember doing that with roserade in diamond & pearl (well i guess technically only for sure on diamond. just finished a grass only run for fun) because i wanted PP over raw damage, so never taught it to my budew or rosellia. but taught it to roserade after i lost a few times against the elite 4
@@GelatinCoffee
Maybe, but the point is that you catch Shroomish at high enough levels that Spore doesn't need to be in Breloom's learnset.
Is it a Shroomish fact, or a Breloom fact?
@@Mpot1us secretly it was a Psyduck fact all along
13:55 Technically in the Switch games they can disobey you even if you caught them. But it only happens if you catch them over leveled. If you capture it at a reasonable level and raise it up, it'll still be obedient, regardless of your level. With Pokemon games being more open-world these days, I guess that was their way to keep you from just running to a late-game area, catching a high level Pokemon and then sweeping the early game with it. But yeah, everything pre-Nintendo Switch still follows the rules you listed out.
There's still one oversight though (at least in the pre-NX games); you can still trade over a Pokémon, have the other person train it to level 100, then trade the Pokémon back. Then that Pokémon will be able to sweep the game it originally came from, because despite technically being a traded Pokémon, the TID and SID are those of the trainer in its origin game. As such, no disobedience effects will trigger. Can't confirm for PLA or ScaVio, as I do not own an NX.
(For context, "NX" was the Switch's old codename, I just think NX sounds better so I say that instead of Switch.)
@@mickkelley3776I believe when Scarlet and Violet originally came out, trading a pokémon would reset its "met level" used in calculations for obedience, but later on they changed it with a patch. I believe they did it because of trade evolutions
I've been playing pokemon for the majority of my life and never knew a "fluctuating" exp category existed
fair, it's the smallest exp category, was introduced in gen 3 and is almost exclusively gen 3 pokemon (except for drifloon/drifblim). at low levels it's actually a really fast growth rate, it's a bit slower than medium around the time you'd normally beat the elite four and slow as hell in higher levels, basically the opposite of erratic (despite the names being synonymous)
13:40 There is one exception I know of for obedience. In FireRed, LeafGreen, and Emerald, Mew and Deoxys will not obey you in battle unless they have the "Fateful Encounter" flag set.
So if you use a Gameshark to go to Faraway Island and catch the event Mew, then it will listen to you; but if you use a Gameshark to catch a wild Mew somewhere it will still ignore you if you have the Earth Badge.
FireRed and LeafGreen have some additional anti-cheating measures, too. For example, adding the Tea to your inventory won't let you get past the guards at Saffron unless you actually got it from the old lady in Celadon. GameFreak really went all out to hinder cheaters in FireRed, LeafGreen, and Emerald.
I never understood that mindset. Let people play how they want in single player games!
@@chrishubbard64Nintendo in general hate people enjoying thier games unless it's how Nintendo intended.
If you gameshark 8 badges in ruby/sapphire then the wailmer in lilyove never go away because you can't trigger the aqua/magma events properly
Another anti-cheating measure was randomizing memory. A 4-byte encryption key was generated for encrypting item quantities and money, the key was placed into a randomized location in memory, as well as player data. There were 2 pointers to the key and player data, and any time the main screen loaded, the locations and key would be regenerated. Leave or enter a building, or change floors, or even exit the pokemon or items menu, and all the encryption and memory locations get randomized again.
I don't like TMs being 1 use only, so I wanted to create a cheat that gave me unlimited TMs, as long as I had one in my inventory. The above was a wall I ran into trying to create the cheat. Thankfully the emulator I use has the ability to use lua scripts to read and write to memory, so once I located the initial pointers, and was able to reliably locate both the encryption key and the player data at any given time, I wrote a script that keeps tabs on those, then encrypts the value for 95, and stored that in the quantity locations for each TM (it also made sure that the item was a TM, not an HM or blank slot, before changing the value).
@@chrishubbard64 It's Pokemon, so it's not intended to be single player. You're supposed to be playing with other players, including trading and battling, so I understand the mindset. Cheats give you access to pokemon you aren't supposed to have, as well as eliminating the need for trading, taking what is intended to be a multiplayer experience, and either giving an unfair edge (cheated pokemon), or eliminating the need for the multiplayer aspect altogether (get all the pokemon w/o trading).
MDBAMA: In black and white play throughs, why don’t you take on Cynthia or Alder? You take on Red in silver and gold play throughs and Steven in Emerald.
I feel because for Cynthia it's quite out of the way to get to. And alder he'd need to fight through the elite four again at higher levels. Where as Red and Steven are in areas that are easier to get to in those games
@@SKMedia252 Well, Red requires clearing the Kanto gyms. Yes, most of them are easy, but it's a lot more time than refighting the Unova E4, and both involve grind.
@@SKMedia252Red literally requires clearing a whole region, including sidequests.
Cynthia takes 2 routes and Alder is 4 fights
@@velvetbutterfly In fairness, gen 2/HGSS Kanto is an absolute joke aside from Blue and Red. Yes, it requires a lot more fights in the Johto games, but most of the fights are so easy that it's basically just one giant gym. Fighting the Elite Four again to fight Alder is like if you had to fight Blue four times to fight Red, except Blue is Red's strength for each fight and Red is scaled up to, like, level 92 or something.

MDBAMA: Why is it that you don't seem to use move tutors? For example, there's the Rock Slide tutor in Rock Tunnel, but in runs where you could use it, you seem to stick with Rock Tomb.
In most cases it's due to the tutor moves having low accuracy or the tutors themselves being annoying to get to
Eviolite is also a gen 5 item, so you're rarely able to use it anyway XD

Thanks for making videos. I really appreciate your hard work. ❤
Another pokemon whos evo line really shined in gen 4, love my weird fungus kangaroo
On the disobedience mechanic, at least in Scarlet and Violet, disobedience also happens if you catch a Pokémon at too high of a level. I found it out when I started my Violet run and got an event Pokémon at level 50, with me being the OT, and it wouldn’t obey me completely except in raids until I got 7 badges. The good thing in this case is if you’re the OT, then it will only disobey you until the level it was originally at when caught is surpassed by badges.
It USED to be true that literally every Pokemon game makes the disobedience mechanic only apply to traded Pokemon. But as of Legends: Arceus, it's no longer literally every one. Just all but one...
I think you can win this MDB. You beat this game with Paras, a worse Grass types with Bug typing making it EVEN WORSE. You've got this, man!
6:57 - Actually Paralysis is only a 25% chance that they cant move
MBDAMA: Are you still planning on playing Stadium 2 with Whatageek and Goose_it?
Yo MDB. Just wanted to express thanks for all the videos over these years: I've been fairly sick recently and I've been bingeing a bunch of your older Pokemon challenge videos. Today's one was enjoyable too, thought it might've been a rough go at the end, but that Spore/Leech Seed/Return combo worked wonders. Hope your throat feels better soon. Thanks again, man.
So Scarlet and Violet did make a minor change to obedience.
Because of the somewhat-open-world format you are able to get to high-level areas really early in the game if you want. To discourage this, if a Pokémon’s level-when-obtained is higher than your obedience level from badges, it will disobey, even if it wasn’t traded.
On the topic of obedience, you should do a team run of first form, but they are all traded. Level faster and don't obey
Obedience did indeed change in Scarlet/Violet, it now applies to every pokemon (including those you caught yourself) but it works off the met level instead of the current level!
Funnily enough, that means it still works the same for trading an overleveled pokemon, since the met level is set to the pokemon's level when it gets traded
In regards to obedience in scarlet and violet, they actually did change it! If you level a pokemon it works as expected, no questions asked. However as you can go to later game areas with level 50+ pokemon early, pokemon you catch have to be within your gym level to obey you. If you catch a level 15 pokemon before the first gym, disobey. If you beat the first gym and catch it though, it'll obey you and you can level it up as much as you want!
ok so for scarlet and violet, it's a little different, you CAN have an overleveled pokemon if you caught a pokemon below the level obedience of a badge, otherwise if you caught an overleveled pokemon, it will disobey you up until you get enough badges to obey you
The fluctuating exp group is so fascinating, because up until level 36, they actually need LESS experience than Medium Fast. At level 36, the total exp is the same, but from then on, fluctuating starts to require more than medium fast.
1:52 "i picked to replace shroomish so our rival has charizard"
So it will be a bulbasaur run? 😂
Legends arceus stops obeying you after a certain level despite trade
Shroomish's face is literally mine when I find out people skip the intro/outro's in your videos
Thank you for the comment about not finding Nuzlockes fun. I get asked the same question during my own streams, and I agree they're not nearly as fun as other challenges. I like ones that make me think and require strategies and trying things and taking risks that don't require complete restarts on a failure. I don't have time for redoing failed runs either.
I’m so happy to hear you mention finally using rare candies!!
**Week 141 of asking for Platinum With Only Drifloon**
I will never give up
They actually did change the disobedience mechanic, now it's Pokemon that were traded to you and Pokemon that you catch that are too high of a level.
I experienced this change first-hand when I almost lost a team star battle because the level 35 Scyther that I caught wouldn't listen to me.
I am once again asking you to take the fossil opposite the one you say you took. Just to see who notices.
Yes, I know he took the Dome fossil on a fossils only run when he started with Omanyte. But that is not what I mean. I mean I want to hear "I took the Root fossil" while seeing the Claw fossil being taken. Or hearing "I took the Helix fossil" while seeing the Dome fossil being taken.
And to those who say that this has happened before - when? Show me! I've looked and looked and have not seen it.
13:44 since Legends: Arceus, they will also disobey of you catch them at a too high level.
In Scarlet i caught a lvl 55 Zweilous while i only had 2 bades (on the first ball as well), it disobeyd till i had enough badges like it was traded.
In Scarlet and Violet, it's all about when you catch them.
If you catch them below your obedience limit, they obey. if above, they wont. if you get a badge that raises your limit above what you caught them at, they obey.
This is far superior to Sword and Shield's "If they're above this limit you just can't catch them." system.
I did this playthrough in Oblivion once and it was a TON of fun:
Play Oblivion but you're only allowed to use Unique Items
I hate Shroomish, haha! Nice you did a solo run with it though!
Thanks for doing this idea MahDryBread, I really appreciate it.

Are there any Pokémon you absolutely won't use for a challenge run? If so, why not?
Holy cow. The disobeying thing is such a Mandela effect. I could've sworn...
Shroomish and Breloom are some of my favorite designs and type combos when it evolves thanks for doing a run like this and spot lightingShroomish's potential.
14:37 Very fair, it’s a STRESSFUL experience. Not for everyone, it was called hard mode by the originator for a reason.
Can we an Emerald run with just Swablu??!!!???
MDBAMA: missed opportunity to have Snowbama read the comments in the text bubble
From what I know in Scarlet and Violet Pokemon will disobey you if you caught them at a high level with not enough badges - but also traded Pokemon will always obey you if you received them under a certain badge level (even if the Pokemon then goes a over that badge level).
This might sound random but i enjoy watching your videos while doing homework. Also i just have to say that you have a very soothing video for a guy. no offense i'm just a new subscriber to your youtube channel. This is just something that i noticed while watching your videos back to back.
Funny idea for April fools, a team of all legendaries at max level and EVs, but the twist is that you go in-depth on every fight, from weakest trainer to wild encounters
Now do gen 3 with an oddish and call it shroomish 😂😂
Eviolite didn't exist until Gen 5 so he couldn't use it in most of his runs even if he wanted to.
I'm waiting for the day when MDB is going on about how a gym will be hard, and then tries to be optimistic about it just to cut himself off and say how bad the fights was
I'll admit I'm slightly sad you won't Nuzlocke, but thank you for the consistent content all the same!
13:03 I think the Pokemon disobeying question is because of how the obedience system changed as of late. In Scarlet Violet, if you catch a Pokemon above a certain level before you get an x amount of badge, Pokemon will disobey REGARDLESS of OT status.
MDBAMA: why do you never take the dome fossil 😂
This is where some PP ups will be a life saver for mega drain with Agatha!!
Love the content MDB keep it up!
Droomish would be proud.
Good luck with the voice recovery!
We love replacing a shroomish with a shroomish
Wow! Shromish is one of my all time favourites. What an interesting run!
The only pokemon game I've ever played where pokemon you catch will disobey you if they're too high level are fan games like pokemon Reborn, Rejuvenation and Desolation.
15:01 - I dunno man, I loved the Metronome run.
Never underestimate the power of leech seed.
13:39 I do have to point out obedience does change in Scarlet/Violet, iirc it's based on the level you get the pokemon at, regardless of original trainer or not. ie: if your badges say pokemon up to 10 would obey you and you catch an 11, it'll disobey till you get the appropriate badge, but if you caught that same pokemon at 9, and raised it to 11, it'd obey. Not sure why they felt the need to change this, but hey.
i have a rule suggestion. for future kanto runs, you can catch/evolve wild mons just to add to the dex so you can reach 50 entries to get the itemfinder to get the leftovers from beneath snorlax. just explain it in video that any mons used this way are not used against trainers. because getting a weedle to lv10 is easy and gets you 3 dex entries towards that sweet sweet leftovers
Just so you know, Leech Seed heals you by the amount of damage it does, so if you want the max amount of healing, just using the leech seed damage will be better than using mega drain.
They did change obedience. Starting at Legends Arceus and Scarlet and Violet, any Pokémon you catch or receive whose starting level is above your badge/star level threshold will disobey you until you get enough badges/stars so that their initial level is below your level threshold. Once that happens, they'll never disobey you again, even if their levels rise above your level threshold again.
This eliminates the problem of traded Pokémon disobeying you later on, as well as keeping disobedience's intended purpose: to stop you from cheesing the game by trading or catching a Pokémon at an extremely high level early on.
1:54 Oh no, it hasn’t been two minutes!
WAIT WAIT I forgot what fossil was taken
It was the root fossil, right?
You haven't listened, hein? 😅
I'd like to see a gen2 Chinchou run.
Indeed! For the algorythm!!
The suspense up until the fossils...
They actually changed the obedience in legends arceus/gen 9, because of the high level wild pokemon, that you can meet and catch! Now it all depends on the level at which you meet pokemon, not a level of pokemon. It also now works on non-traded pokemon! But that means, that traded pokemon do not suddenly stop listening to you, when you overlevel them!
I'd buy a "Magic of Spore" sticker
Yes! Breloom is my favorite pokemon. I even have him tattooed on me. I'm excited to see how shroomish does.
Fun challenge idea. Pokemon Emerald using only fossil pokemon.
MDBAMA: Why not put an Everstone on your pokemon through the UPR if you start a run with a first or second form starter?
I image it gets pretty annoying having to go through and then cancelling the evo animation every time. Also maybe sometimes when grinding in the background you forget and have to reset?
MDBAMA: when will we get a challenge video for fallout/Elder Scrolls again or a different game series challenge run?
Don't get me wrong, I love the Pokemon challenge runs but variety is the spice of life, and it's fun seeing you do strange challenges in other games
Challenge Idea: Indirect Damage Only!
Could be whichever generation you choose with whatever team you can put together, but no direct attacking moves.
Status, abilities, Counter, Perish Song, etc.
Can you beat any Pokémon game without directly attacking another Pokémon?
Challenge idea! a Single-type run, but use the randomizer to randomize movesets so you don't know what you'll get or what you opponent will have! I nominate water type.
14:04 I think the rule might be exclusive to trading for the more linear earlier games because you physically can’t catch a wild mon above the badge level in those games but that’s actually how it works in ScarVi
Since you can conceivably get to any area at the start of the game and catch a super high level mon, they just won’t obey you unless the level you actually acquire them at is below the badge level. Tho that does mean you can go to an area with mons that are more powerful than you ‘should’ be able to get, and just keep encountering them til you meet one that just barely is a low enough level to meet the badge requirement, so imo it makes things more interesting.
Oh btw cus you mentioned it, I’d be super interested to watch a supercut of MDB’s first playthrough of one of the later gen games!
MDBAMA: when is pokemon blue rescue team comming back
I have an idea for a fun run! A run only using Mew in gen 5. However, there's a catch. You mustn't overlevel past the next gym leader's/champion's ace.
This run should provide a bit of a twist than usual, since instead of grinding until you can get past a boss, you have to think of it like a puzzle. You have a pokemon with high stats and all of the tm's at its disposal. Still, it shouldn't be too hard and sounds fun!
And yes, I thought of gen 5 because of the unlimited tm's. It could work on any gen though
I think Eviolite should be on the table if you get hard walled in the late game, but have a minimum number of tries before you use it. I’d say you’re at least trading off your item slot, but Black has very few berries or other hold items compared to other gens.
Black has an abundance of good held items, idk what you’re talking about? Like you said there are no berries, but in exchange there is tons of damage boosting items all over the game available before driftveil gym. Not to mention gen 5 has infinitely farmable gems that are so broken they had to be nerfed 2 times in the next gen. Im never out of options for held items in those games
@@theotakuwolf8573 honestly I’m probably just remembering it worse than what it was because I haven’t played vanilla Black since it came out. I know the Gems are RNG to grind
I love the pokemon trading card game on the game boy colour my favorite sound track in the franchise just really hits a soft spot for me
A little disappointed it wasn't called Mushdaroom, but at least we get a weed reference out of it.
Game of your choice- Feebas or Poliwag runs
Also, for a slightly easier challenge, a game with all three of that generation all in first form.
Also, champions team but in first forms.
