It’s dumb but there is a situation where focus energy is useful in gen 1, if you’re using a fast Pokémon with/with a high crit rate move that wants to set up with swords dance or badge boost, you can use focus energy to NOT crit since they ignore your positive stat changes too.
Rhyhorn and Rhydon are Pokémon I thought were SUPER good back in the day. I mean its a rock rhinoceros and you get it pretty late into the game so it gotta be good, right? Yeah that was before I learned how important speed and how aweful very common x4 weaknesses are.
Actually rhydon is fairly good in competitive gen 1 singles. The meta game is dominated by normal types and being able to switch in on hyper beam is pretty good. He’s not like an S tier Pokémon or anything but rhydon and golem are both decent Pokémon in gen 1 competitive.
@@briankim1098not anymore sadly. Golem is agreed to just be worse in almost every way. Explosion is the only thing it really has over Rhydon and that isn’t game changing enough to be better than Rhydon. It’s still not bad or anything but it’s just outclassed
@@adamstadick2044 Competitive play wasn't really a thing 7 year old me thought about. I just thought "Oh cool a rock rhino! Aaaand it died to some leaves..."^^
In my head canon, Sabrina gives you the TM for Psywave because she gets tired of the move costing her the win and she doesn't want to use it anymore. Change my mind xD
Canonically very few trainers beat her or any gym leader. By the end of the game, only Red and Blue have their names carved onto the statues of every gym. While she is portrayed as somewhat childish, less so than the likes of Whitney, I don't see her giving up on a move after 2 losses even if they were close together.
This is hilarious because in addition to this video, Scott's Thoughts Just released a Rhydon line solo challenge in Fire Red today. So twice the rhino themed Pokemon today!
I'd love to see more meme runs. Something like "Can I beat pokemon (insert) using only The First Pokemon?" and you use Arceus, Mew, Bulbasaur and Rhydon.
Arceus: First Pokemon in existence that created the rest of existence. Mew: Originally the ancestor of all Pokemon. My headcanon to get around that conflict is that Mew is the ancestor of all non-Legendary Pokemon (and Mewtwo). Bulbasaur: First in the National Pokedex. Rhydon: The first Pokemon created in real life.
I think Blastoise would've been harder than Venusaur. Venusaur being part Poison has reasons to fear STAB moves such as Dig and Earthquake. Blastoise MIGHT fear Thunderbolt but that is non-stab and Rhyhorn's special is...less than stellar.
Blastoise would've been a decent fight for Rhyhorn. Great defense, water moves the whole game (so Hydro Pump at the end), plus gen 1 Blizzard (yikes 🥶). But if he made the rival pick Squirtle, his grass type would've been Exeggutor, who is less scary than Venasaur. So, starters in both scenarios are hard fights, but one of his (rival) picks other picks is much less threatening. I get why he chose Bulbasaur.
Ah but it also results in his Rival's water type being Gyaraods who is also flying and thus weak to STAB Rock Slide too. So Picking Venusaur made the rival have a lot more weaknesses for him to exploit than he otherwise would have had.@@AnimeNut101
Normally yes but considering type coverage in this specific run having Verusaur (Poison so fearing EQ) Gyarads (Flying so fearing Rock Slide) and Arcanine (Fire so fearing both) is NOT exactly setting up for a hard fight for a Rhyhorn.@@chrisdaignault9845
Great run. Just to note that for Gen 1, miss chance -1 stage is 2/3 chance to hit. Gen 2+ changed this to 3/4 hit chance with -1 stage. Sand-attacking Pidgeys against slow mons are no joke.

Good thing you were able to put that Meowth to sleep! :P (21:24) Wow, Rhyno tanked that Mega Drain like a boss, and then that clutch PAR from Body Slam won it for you!
Three ideas, short and simple: How about a Vulpix run in gen 4 or 5? Might be some fun. It has some decent moves and/or can learn. Second idea is an Eeveelution run. All Eeveelutions allowed - best would be gen 4 in Platinum, breeding will be needed, but i guess you will have some fun. On top, you need some time to relax - this should do the trick. Last but not least, i think a Bruno Team run in gen 2 can be really weird. I just have a feeling it will be weird, but this might be interesting.
5:08 even if the rival were to use good AI it still wouldn’t go solely for Sand Attack as in gen 1 it is listed as a normal type. (That can still hit ghost types)
In solo runs Dig's higher PP count makes it more appealing too use, plus the invulnerability turn sometimes helps like when Blaine used a Super Potion and then Fire Spin when Rhyhorn was underground.

I remember the first time I caught a Rhyhorn in Pokémon Yellow. It looked like a really cool and strong Pokémon and I spent hours trying to catch one in the Safari Zone. Then I saw that its moves were crappy and it struggled to even stay alive to gain EXP in battles and promptly boxed it. Poor guy. At least it got some redemption when in gen 4 I traded a Rhydon with my brother to evolve into Rhyperior and became a part of my big team together with Gallade, Lucario and Empoleon
Another great vid as always! 👍 I know you do all your Kanto challenge runs in Red and Blue, but I would love to see you do this particular run again, but in Yellow. I think your worries about Lorelei's Slowbro (as well as Bruno even) would've been more valid, due to better movesets for the Elite 4 teams. Also, I'm curious how the rival's team would be doing against you throughout the run, considering how different the rival is in Yellow.

Ironically with the badge boost glitch being so strong dividing your crit chance and having your attack stat sky rocket with less odds of crits doing less damage cause it ignores buffs seems pretty good, completely unintended, but pretty good!
I still believe after you managed to beat this game with a Zubat, there anren't many other Gen 1 Pokémonthat could not beat this game alone. It's only a question of "How hard is it to".
It's funny; I got two dittos from catching Rhyhorns and got a shiny Rhyhorn in Go, and now you're putting up a Rhyhorn challenge. I don't think I've ever used the Rhyhorn line in a playthrough before, though I do remember my brother having a great Rhyperior when he played Battle Revolution. Lightning Rod was a pretty good ability in that game since it was all double battles. Also 100% approve of the cat pics, along with you talking about something unrelated to the video like how dumb the name "Super Thanks" is and... basically everything you ramble on about in the outros. Also two more ideas I had for challenge runs: Pokemon Black with only one Litwick (probably my favorite ghost-type pokemon that I had a level 80-ish one of in White for some reason), and Pokemon Platinum with only one Phione (pure water-type, has 80s across the board for base stats).
You know what's my problem with those videos? I watch em when I'm in bed and falling asleep, seemingly there is no problem until you realize that I wake up and always forget to comment how much I actually enjoy them. It's great content, you have a great voice man. Also which fossil did you pick
Rhyhorn is honestly one of the coolest first stage Pokemon. I'd even go as far as saying that he's cooler than many fully-evolved Pokemon. It would've been sick if he got a Paradox form in Scarlet and Violet.
You winning the water gym with a crit, and starmie doing nothing was insane! I chose bulbasaur as my starter and by using razor leaf, I hit 24 crits, I would have hit 25 but my first razor leaf didn’t hit.
Betting on success but Level 80+ minimum because if you can't Outspeed and 1shot Lance's Gyarados it'll be either impossible or require a miss and Rhyhorn's base Speed is kinda bad if i recall.
Actually IIRC Scott's Thoughts' overlay reveals one sand attack in gen 1 lowers 100 to 66. Still, that's 2/3, so 1/3 to miss, and 5 times in a row is 1/243.
I guess it's a bit less impressive when you figure that it's got slightly better odds than the 256 glitch and I see that happen just about every Red run, either to me or my opponent. Still funny though!
Suggestions for future runs: X or Y with only a Greninja with Ash's moveset (Cut, Water Shuriken, Aerial Ace and Double Team) Any game with only moves up to 60 base power Sword or Shield with only TM Moves (no TR) Any game with randomized moveset and abilities.
Poor Rhydon really needs some love from game freak. And speaking of love, I'd love to see you do a pokemon gold/silver run with just a Murkrow (how's that for a suggestion segway)

So even something like Super Comment would've been better. Also early Merry Christmas I guess.
I was thinking, that maybe focus energy would be good in Scyther. Its slash is a guaranteed crit but because gen 1 it ignores swords dance, making it weaker than a non-crit boosted slash. But with focus energy it is possible to not crit to do more damage after a boost
#MDBA Challenge idea: Can you Beat Oblivion, Poison only run? The rules are pretty simple: - you can only use Poison as a means of dealing damage - when using alchemy, you can only make poison of course, you can add rules as you see fit As usually, I'm writing this before you ever did the challenge let me know in the comments if MDBA decides to do it at any point. Comments are good for the YT algorithm after all
Your right. Maybe he was counting on Dig's invulnerability turn to survive quad weak attacks due to bad speed and special? 🤔 Or he might've forgot, who knows.
Random words of the "Day"™: day 682, 683, 684, and 685: Amalgamation, Mum, Nanotechnology, Poland It's Ok Rhyhorn, at least you weren't it an Emerald run
Dire hit in original pokemon does have one legitimate use. Ensuring that you never crit when you'd boosted your attack/special, which completely ignores stat boosting and penalties on both sides. So if you are going for a single high power boosted move build it will keep you from critting, but... For the times that matter you can soft reset, so honestly why would you outside of some wierd speed run shenanigans.
Idea for challenge run; generation 1 run where you are defeated by each gym leader with a main Pokemon in your party. Also, a run on an Island of Sodor mod in the style of the first mod video.
Interesting run would have thought it would have been a bit harder and once again it makes me realize how weird gen 1 is. Something I think would be interesting to see is after a hard or impossible run is finished evolving a Pokémon if possible to show him much if a difference it would have made good or bad
It’s dumb but there is a situation where focus energy is useful in gen 1, if you’re using a fast Pokémon with/with a high crit rate move that wants to set up with swords dance or badge boost, you can use focus energy to NOT crit since they ignore your positive stat changes too.
JRose11 actually did use that on purpose with one of his MANY solo runs (at the time I write this, he ACTUALLY succeeded a solo DITTO run)
Not really worth it, because you're using a whole turn to do it when chances are two critical hits would probably do as much damage as setting it up.
@@williamfallsyeah but if you’re facing more than one pokemon it becomes worth it
@@williamfalls If you're +6 from swords dance and you one shot without a crit, but you do like a quarter with one it becomes worth it

of course, you can add rules as you see fit
As usually, I'm writing this before you ever did the challenge
let me know in the comments if MDBA decides to do it at any point.
Comments are good for the YT algorithm after all
MDB could have had EQ since before Koga by going to the 10th floor with the card key and beat that one rocket
Your right. Maybe he was counting on Dig's invulnerability turn to survive quad weak attacks due to bad speed and special? 🤔
Or he might've forgot, who knows.
@@AnimeNut101it's because he already had Dig which had higher PP and it didn't make sense to have double Ground moves.
„we Hit a big dig“ …… man I am too childish to ignore that 😂
Good show! It's awesome to see a genuine person get success.

It's Ok Rhyhorn, at least you weren't it an Emerald run
Dire hit in original pokemon does have one legitimate use. Ensuring that you never crit when you'd boosted your attack/special, which completely ignores stat boosting and penalties on both sides. So if you are going for a single high power boosted move build it will keep you from critting, but... For the times that matter you can soft reset, so honestly why would you outside of some wierd speed run shenanigans.
Idea for challenge run; generation 1 run where you are defeated by each gym leader with a main Pokemon in your party. Also, a run on an Island of Sodor mod in the style of the first mod video.
You might like this idea
Next pokemon challenge could be pokemon whatever but a player controls the enemy
Interesting run would have thought it would have been a bit harder and once again it makes me realize how weird gen 1 is. Something I think would be interesting to see is after a hard or impossible run is finished evolving a Pokémon if possible to show him much if a difference it would have made good or bad
Twitter gang? Twitter gang.
I’m usually Twitter gang but I guess I was asleep
