@@timemonkeyI've always said I wanted to meet the person who made the decision to have a Fire-type gym leader in a region with almost no fire types. They could have used literally any other type for that gym and it would have made more sense.
@@velvetbutterfly Flint's monotype team in Platinum is way better than his D&P team. Seriously, it's almost insulting to give LOPUNNY to an E4 member.

(1:47) Actually, Fire is still super effective against Torterra. Ground doesn't resist Fire, even though it is super effective against Fire. (22:19) And that's game! Ponyta succeeded where Shinx did not!
Would need research to know which berries grant which type (except for the type resisting berries, those are obvious), but yeah Natural Gift is underrated in these runs. Edit: Also it's incredibly useful in Heart Gold and Soul Silver, where your mom buys 5 type resisting berries periodically if you're sending money to her, making sure you have a steady supply of those (whether for defense or for Natural Gift).
Fire Types really got the short end of the stick in 4th Gen. Weak to both other fully Evolved starters and there are barely any Fire types to choose from.
on the other hand, it is also super-effective against both. Infernape I mean. Fire against Torterra, because ground is not resistant to fire. And fighting against Empoleon, as it is part steel. And Infernape has a major speed advantage to both.
Not really, Infernape was the superior gen 4 starter since it could be either physical, special or a mix of both, and also it was much faster. Empoleon and torterra needed buffs in later gens to compare to infernape nowadays.
It is also pretty funny how the speedruns pick Chimchar as the starter of choice (though if I remember correctly it gets replaced with something else later on.) As a starter it is way more versatile and powerful early on than both other starters overall. Still a shame it is pretty much the only good fire type in DPPl (though they added few in Platinum, nothing really comes even close to how good the Chimchar-line is.)
@@KimParkkinen Well in those Fire types defense, nothing could ever compete as well as Infernape if we took every single Fire type from Gen1 until Gen4 (not counting legendaries obviously) and put it in Platinum.
Honestly, that was a fun run. It's always interesting when you get right to the end and suddenly there's a last minute road block that makes you wonder if it's actually possible. I'm fortunate enough to work a job where i can have youtube running in the background while i work and your definitely helping maintain my sanity! You're my favorite channel on the platform and I look forward to delving yet further through the backlog!
I always feel weird getting the challenges early. Yes, I get it early, but then I don’t have a challenge for my normal Saturday routine. Welp, here I am!
Make sure you take care of yourself. I remember the UA-cam grind and I used to do the same thing - not eat until mid to late afternoon because either I was so excited to make/finish a video or I felt like I couldn’t delay making a video until after I’d eaten. I can’t imagine doing that now that I’m 30. The time it takes to make and eat food is worth being able to work at full capacity without your hunger putting you on a time limit!
In terms of what fire types are availible before post game, the sinnoh pokedex only contains 5 fire types total, the 3 chimchar line and the 2 ponyta line, thats it, only those 2 lines EDIT: Platinum has a differnt dex that has about 60 pokemon added to it, and that dex adds on the magmar line (availible outside the ironworks), flareon and the houndour line (the routes between the south of veilstone city and the grand lake hotel), also note that rotom doesn't change its ghost type in its different forms, like heat being elec/fire or wash being elec/water, until gen 5.
Ponyta/Rapidash was a pivotal member of my team in Platinum. It got to the point where I had to force myself not to use it so the rest of my team could keep up. This was a team with an Alakazam and a Dragon Dance Water Onix, by the way. I've never had a member of the line come close that level of performance since then.
Considering the Water Onix run you did one time, I do think it would be interesting if a gen 4 or 5 run was done with a modded ROM to add in a different form of an old Pokemon without altering the teams of the in-game trainers. Imagine this run but with the Psychic type Ponyta from Gen 8, as a good example of the idea
I believe Chimchar & Ponyta were the only natural spawning fire types in the wild in D/P. There was a thing on the original DS where you could get Growlith to spawn if you had Fire Red in the GBA slot. But that's about it for fire types before the elite 4. They fixed it in Platinum but not by much. I think they gave us access to Eevee & Magmar before the elite 4.
And even then, the GBA cart trick didn't even work until you got the National Dex, which means at most, unless you were going out of your way to catch and evolve Pokemon, you couldn't see everything until Cynthia at MINIMUM since she's the only trainer in ALL of Sinnoh that has both Milotic and Spiritomb.
I know you probably won't want to do another Platinum run for the next Pokémon challenge, but when you do play it again I've got a challenge idea. Pokémon Platinum with only East and West Sea Gastrodon. They can learn powerful moves like Earthquake though, so if you want to make it harder then you could use East and West Sea Shellos instead.
I spent the past few days binging previous/old runs and almost forgot there would be a new one today. Good thing this video happened to pop up in the recommendations!
Its awesome to see you actually make a strategy using the TMs this time instead of just doing your usual boring level up and brute force with return strategy. Keep trying out new stuff! Its alot more fun then you just leveling up!
Woke up in a very dodgy mood because of having a very rough week, turning onto UA-cam and seeing my favourite youtuber do a solo run with one of my childhood favourite Pokémon does make things better!
Sunny Day is such an amazing move because not only do you get the huge boost offensively but it can also really help out defensively as well against Water types (add in Solarbeam and it gets even better) 😊
Thanks for always making my day when you post. Currently recovering from surgery and you're always so upbeat, even when things are rough for you, I'm convinced it's helping my healing process 😊 I know it's probably slower with all the cutscenes, but an ORAS run would be so interesting. Fairies, Megas, physical/special split, oh my!
Also, more importantly, your channel is great, all the hard work, time, effort, energy put into the videos, not just your pokemon challenges but everything on here. Take care of yourself.
Wanted to say thanks for putting out this Ponyta video, Ponyta and Rapidash being two of my favourites. I watch your videos all the time and I was sorry to hear you and your wife split but it sounds like your doing ok, hope this helps a little bit, keep up the good work!

First time catching a challenge early. Great way to start off the day :)
I have an idea for a fun challenge, One that means you could even use Drowzee. Can you beat Pokemon Black (Or any game from gen's 5 ,6 or 7) with only the move Assist? Purrloin learns Assist at level 6 so it'd be the starter, Then if you get a male Purrloin you can breed it with other's to get more Pokemon. I think this would be a great wacky challenge since the more Pokemon on your team the more random the move is. For any that don't know Assist uses a random move known by any of the user's party Pokémon, With some exceptions. So even Pokemon that can't use Assist would still be useful if they have good moves that Assist can use. Drowzee is in the Human-Like Egg Group so If you want one with Assist you'd need a Spinda since they're in the Field and Human-Like Egg Groups so can breed with Purrloin and Drowzee. You could also use a Chimchar as a starter if you give it Assist as an Egg Move, They're also in the Field and Human-Like Egg Groups so a male one can breed the move into any Pokemon with Assist.
Hey MDB I had a dream last night where you came to my house & fixed my back pain. I was pretty bummed when I woke up & the pain was still there but I appreciate the respite you gave me
I didn't look at the name of the Ponyta until the end and thought you had just named it "Horsie" like what a little girl would say. Naming it Horsea is honestly the height of comedy, that is really funny and honestly clever
I'd normally put something witty here, but my cat who vanished a week ago right before a major snowstorm just came back home today so I'm too busy being relieved. Still requesting Pokemon B2W2 With Only One Chinchou, though.
That ended up being super close, but that was a fun time. Thanks to Mah Dry Bread for going through this. Gold exclusives, huh... that should be interesting. Probably going to a brutal early Johto, an easy mid-Johto, a tough-but-manageable Elite Four, a smooth Kanto, and a fun Red battle. I could be wrong, though, looking forward to it!
Just saw this after rewatching your Nancy Drew playthrough. Loving the Pokémon challenges and I can’t wait for the return of the Senior Detective(s)! It’s in the book. Yes I know that.😂
Super awesome vid! I always love seeing what creative solutions you find to these challenges. (Also unrelated but I've been asking for a Trapinch run for a bit now. I think it'd be a real funny one)
So, the double fights in Platinum are quite cool from a modding perspective because (if I understood it correctly) they pull your partners' teams from the same file as they would if you were fighting them. I think this means that (and I could be wrong here) people can mod the game so that you have full 12 v 12 double battles. Or alternatively, your rival could be limited in the double battles to using the same Pokemon as you do for the challenge, then go back to using his regular team when you fight him.
2:24 "We're a little stronger than that of a first-form starter." I think you're underestimating Ponyta. Its Stats are more on par with a *middle stage* starter. Charmeleon/Quilava: 58/64/58/80/65/80 Total 405 Ponyta: 50/85/55/65/65/90 Total 410 A little frailer, but faster and harder hitting albeit on the side that's less useful for Fire types (85 Atk vs 80 SpA). (Remember, the entire Typhlosion line's stats are a carbon copy of the Charizard line's, at least until Typhlosion-H came around and didn't have the exact same stats as Typhlosion-J.) What about the other Fire-type starters that don't gain their secondary type until they reach their final stage? Braixen: 59/59/58/90/70/73 Total 409 Torracat: 65/85/50/80/50/90 Total 420 Raboot: 65/86/60/55/60/94 Total 420 Crocalor: 81/55/78/90/58/49 Total 411 ...Power Creep is real. Raboot definitely straight up outclasses Ponyta, a little less special defense but with better physical defense and trading off a bit of what was already Ponyta's weaker attacking stat for a bunch more HP and a little more speed and a single extra point in the better attacking stat. Torracat also seems objectively better than Ponyta, and especially with Special being a better attacking stat for Fire-types unless they have a signature move like Sacred Fire, I'd say Braixen and Crocalor are, too. But yeah, Ponyta is easily as strong as Charmeleon, if not slightly better, and that kind of makes sense when you consider that in the original R/B/G, you wouldn't have access to them until a point in the game when you'd likely already have _Charizard_ if you started with Charmander (it was available a bit earlier in Yellow, but not much--locked by the Poké Flute rather than Surf.) Having access to Ponyta as early as you did in DP, it was actually quite strong for that point in the game.
Chimchar, Ponyta, Magmar, Vulpix, Growlith and Flareon were available to people before post-game in Platinum. Magmar line was at Fuego Ironworks, Vulpix and Growlith required having either Leafgreen or Firered in the GBA slot of your NDS respectively, and Flareon from evolving the Eevee you get from Bebe in Hearthome.
If you are going to continue with the version exclusives runs, you should also do the other half to see how the other exclusives work out (Blue and Silver)
On our way through, I took the skull fossil. I knew if I didn’t say what I took, you’d all ask. Actually, now that I think about it, everyone asks anyway. Comments are good for the UA-cam algorithm.
2:47 Nope, it was just those two. So if you wanted a fire type and didn't pick Chimchar, Rapidash was literally your ONLY option. Hence why Diamond and Pearl kinda suck.
Solo Platinum runs are very quickly becoming "Can this Pokemon beat Garchomp?" Nothing else seems to be a problem for them with some levels, just that dang Garchomp. Fair, but brutal nevertheless.
MDB Magmar is only available in platinum at the Ironworks place right above the Floroma medow and magmar isn’t available in Diamond and Pearl unless leaf green is inserted into the gba slot in the DS and it’s a post game Pokemon in dp
So: Mankey, Growlithe, Spinarak, Gligar, Teddiursa and Martine... I can see Arcanine, Ursaring and Mantine being your top heavy hitters. ...How come Pokémon Crystal doesn't have Version Exclusives?
Can you beat pokemon Emerald with only one Luvdisc? Emerald will probably be harder than Ruby & Sapphire, since you will be fighting 2 water specialists instead of just 1 in R/S.
I have high hopes for Ponyta! For whatever reason there are only two fire-type pokemon lines before the national dex, and they decided that Ponyta was worth the honor of taking the stage alongside the Chimchar line. It HAS to be good, right? ...right?
When I was a young child, the name Cynthia was synonymous with the doll from Rugrats. But in my later childhood, it's synonymous with Pokémon champion Cynthia 😅
Not sure if anyone mentioned but natural gift in plat is underrated for solo pokemon runs since it is like a flexible physical hidden power of your preferred type, definately will help out a lot with a pecha berry natural gift for water onix
Fire is NOT neutral against Torterra, ground doesn't resist fire, but is super effective against it Edit: you also said "I name him Horsea" but your Ponyta is female
He’s usually playing on emulator, so there’s no option to transfer. That and until the 3ds Pokémon games you can only get a new rom from the randomizer program, so there’s no save data carried over
Random words of the "Day"™: day 710, 711, 712, and 713: Kleptomania, Maniacally, Bosnia, Banish Nothing funnier than picturing a grown man riding up to a champion on a small cute fire pony.
Going by my experience of using a Ponyta/Rapidash on my Platinum team, I'd say it'll probably turn out a bit better than you're predicting, as my Firecrackr (character limit) kept pace with her teammates even into the 30s before evolving, but I also had plenty of other team members for various points, so maybe there are roadblocks I don't anticipate. Oh hey, I was right…kinda.
13:00 at these points where you talk about not quite killing the cyrus fights and others are you using sunny day at the start or no? You dont say and i am currious if you are setting it up at the start of every fight to boost your flamethrower damage or not.
I think a cool challenge idea would be doing Pokémon Emerald with Skitty/Delcatty but you can only use Assist. Obviously you can’t use the other Pokémon on your team for battles so the moves you’re pulling from are just what they have when you catch em. It’s like a controlled Metronome run. I think the biggest challenge this kind of run will give you is do you have a small team so you’re more likely to get the move you want or do you go full team 6 for massive coverage but less likely to get whatever move you need at the time.
Congrats on the win. Though you would’ve beaten Cynthia way faster had you used Fire Blast over Solar Beam. You get STAB and the Burn chance would’ve fixed your HP range problems twofold, Burn would’ve axed Garchomp’s last sliver of health and halved the power of Earthquake so you’d have more going into Togekiss by default.
I love your runs! I always look forward to the next one! However, i may have some interesting ideas for some runs: Pokemon Platinum with... a team of Eeveelutions! Yeah, all Eeveelutions. This should be fun and give you an easy time. Second i think a Vulpix only run in Heartgold/Soulsilver might be interesting. I have no clue how this might go. I just know, it can have some decent coverage. Last but not least: Can you beat Pokémon Crystal as Elite 4 Bruno? I don't know how this will turn out. But i think a big chunk of the run might be decently easy? Other than that, do you still take recommendations for non Pokémon runs? I think you can do some interesting things in games like Borderlands or Far Cry.
For the longest time I didn't even notice how few fire type Pokemon these gen 4 games had until I saw people online pointing it out. Guess I'm just not much of a fire type user in general.
I've just beaten Pearl for the first time, and was surprised to find my early game Kricketot/Kricketune proved useful enough to stay on my team throughout. I therefore challenge you to do gen 4 with only Kricketot
Diamond and Pearl only had Chimchar and Ponyta prior to the E4... never forget poor Flint, who had to use Drifblim, Lopunny and Steelix to fill in the gaps in his "Fire" team.

But yeah, Ponyta is easily as strong as Charmeleon, if not slightly better, and that kind of makes sense when you consider that in the original R/B/G, you wouldn't have access to them until a point in the game when you'd likely already have _Charizard_ if you started with Charmander (it was available a bit earlier in Yellow, but not much--locked by the Poké Flute rather than Surf.)
Having access to Ponyta as early as you did in DP, it was actually quite strong for that point in the game.
Would you do a gen V play thru with only the catchable shiny Pokémon ponyta, grayados, haxaruos, gible, and dratini.
Ground doesn't resist fire so fire is super effective on torterra
Right, I must have been thinking of rock
MAN! That was a “hot” run!
Yet I must know: What fossil did you take?
Solo Platinum runs are very quickly becoming "Can this Pokemon beat Garchomp?" Nothing else seems to be a problem for them with some levels, just that dang Garchomp. Fair, but brutal nevertheless.
Fire is still super effective against torterra. It's grass and ground. ground doesn't resist fire it's just good against it
Great run! Rough at odd spots and right at the end, but surprisingly solid otherwise
MDB Magmar is only available in platinum at the Ironworks place right above the Floroma medow and magmar isn’t available in Diamond and Pearl unless leaf green is inserted into the gba slot in the DS and it’s a post game Pokemon in dp
Winning with Return? I guess you could call this My Little Ponyta: Friendship Is Mah-Dry-Bread.
So: Mankey, Growlithe, Spinarak, Gligar, Teddiursa and Martine... I can see Arcanine, Ursaring and Mantine being your top heavy hitters.
...How come Pokémon Crystal doesn't have Version Exclusives?
Grindset is a mindset
Would Love to See Black/ White or Black2/White2 with only Joltik, its one of my favourite Gen 5 pkmn
Ground doesnt resist fire, so Torterra is weak to fire.
Daaaang Garchomp was almost a run killer. Also day 69 of asking for Skyrim with no weapons and no spells. Punchcat!
Fire is NOT neutral against Torterra, ground doesn't resist fire, but is super effective against it
Edit: you also said "I name him Horsea" but your Ponyta is female
One great video. Second I have a question do you delete the game and the Pokémon with it or do you transfer the Pokémon to a different game?
He’s usually playing on emulator, so there’s no option to transfer. That and until the 3ds Pokémon games you can only get a new rom from the randomizer program, so there’s no save data carried over
You can try emerald with one numel. Numel was a favorite of mine. It would be like your torkoal run, but harder
This was a fun one to watch, thanks for doing it. :D
As for challenge run ideas, is it possible to beat a Pokemon game with a team of turtles?
You could have used flare blitz with rocky helmet
Breaking space and time with the power of!.. Kabuto or Omanyte, damn it, every time man...
I saw the Rapidash in the rival fight.
First thought- WHO'S YO DADY!
That was pretty nuts how close to being a hard nope that garchomp was.
The lack of fire types is why I intentionally caught magmar in the underground on the remake
Chimchar and Pontya in Diamond and pearl is all you get for fire types before post game. Thankfully Platinum added more Fire types.
That was an epic run. I wonder what would happen if you used Bounce against Garchomp.
Can you do pokemon sun/moon with only one cosmog (that you can evolve)
Recommending Platinum with Skorupi
Video 5
I know TM stands for Training Machine, but for some reason today I kept hearing stuff like "Fire Blast TradeMark"
A fun idea would be to redo really hard runs but let the pokemon evolve. Like a redemption arc
Random words of the "Day"™: day 710, 711, 712, and 713: Kleptomania, Maniacally, Bosnia, Banish
Nothing funnier than picturing a grown man riding up to a champion on a small cute fire pony.
Cool videos as always Mah-Dry-Bread hmm a challenge of only using Tyrouge for Gen 5 or 6.
On this episode: MBD learns why Grarchomp is broken and why I love it so much.
Breakfast at 3:30 pm? You're on a foreign time zone :).
looking forward to the next challenge, team runs are always interesting
@15:35 - That's his other name!
team runs are better. I suggest a team run where you can use any pokemon team you like set from start, but you can only use STAB moves in batttle!!!!
However, i may have some interesting ideas for some runs:
Pokemon Platinum with... a team of Eeveelutions!
What fossil did you choose?
I've just beaten Pearl for the first time, and was surprised to find my early game Kricketot/Kricketune proved useful enough to stay on my team throughout. I therefore challenge you to do gen 4 with only Kricketot
Ponyta is Neutral to Empoleon but still strong vs Torterra Ground dose not resist fire
this run really took the Shine run to perspective great run
Hidden power electric would have been helpful against Wake
A good challenge run would be pokemon black with only a litwick
Actually a serious comment/thought. Maybe not putting the video unlisted will help it gain traction later on?
Chimecho solo run in Emerald 🤞
