So I think now you are morally required to do Pokemon Platinum with only one horsea (named Ponyta of course). I don't think it's possible but I am looking forward to you proving me wrong. PS. Which fossil did you choose? Comments are good for the UA-cam Algorithm.

Diamond and Pearl only had Chimchar and Ponyta prior to the E4... never forget poor Flint, who had to use Drifblim, Lopunny and Steelix to fill in the gaps in his "Fire" team.
Platinum added Flareon, Houndoom and Magmortar to minimize the issue.

For road blocks like Gyarados and Garchomp, Natural Gift is great as an _out-of-jail_ card since its damage type depends on what berry you're holding.

    • @insulttothehumanrace3807
      @insulttothehumanrace3807 7 місяців тому +1

Would need research to know which berries grant which type (except for the type resisting berries, those are obvious), but yeah Natural Gift is underrated in these runs.
Edit: Also it's incredibly useful in Heart Gold and Soul Silver, where your mom buys 5 type resisting berries periodically if you're sending money to her, making sure you have a steady supply of those (whether for defense or for Natural Gift).

on the other hand, it is also super-effective against both. Infernape I mean.
Fire against Torterra, because ground is not resistant to fire.
And fighting against Empoleon, as it is part steel.
And Infernape has a major speed advantage to both.

    • @Otonio_Bruno
      @Otonio_Bruno 7 місяців тому +6

Not really, Infernape was the superior gen 4 starter since it could be either physical, special or a mix of both, and also it was much faster. Empoleon and torterra needed buffs in later gens to compare to infernape nowadays.

    • @KimParkkinen
      @KimParkkinen 7 місяців тому +4

It is also pretty funny how the speedruns pick Chimchar as the starter of choice (though if I remember correctly it gets replaced with something else later on.) As a starter it is way more versatile and powerful early on than both other starters overall. Still a shame it is pretty much the only good fire type in DPPl (though they added few in Platinum, nothing really comes even close to how good the Chimchar-line is.)

In terms of what fire types are availible before post game, the sinnoh pokedex only contains 5 fire types total, the 3 chimchar line and the 2 ponyta line, thats it, only those 2 lines
EDIT: Platinum has a differnt dex that has about 60 pokemon added to it, and that dex adds on the magmar line (availible outside the ironworks), flareon and the houndour line (the routes between the south of veilstone city and the grand lake hotel), also note that rotom doesn't change its ghost type in its different forms, like heat being elec/fire or wash being elec/water, until gen 5.

I believe Chimchar & Ponyta were the only natural spawning fire types in the wild in D/P. There was a thing on the original DS where you could get Growlith to spawn if you had Fire Red in the GBA slot. But that's about it for fire types before the elite 4. They fixed it in Platinum but not by much. I think they gave us access to Eevee & Magmar before the elite 4.

I have an idea for a fun challenge, One that means you could even use Drowzee. Can you beat Pokemon Black (Or any game from gen's 5 ,6 or 7) with only the move Assist? Purrloin learns Assist at level 6 so it'd be the starter, Then if you get a male Purrloin you can breed it with other's to get more Pokemon. I think this would be a great wacky challenge since the more Pokemon on your team the more random the move is.
For any that don't know Assist uses a random move known by any of the user's party Pokémon, With some exceptions. So even Pokemon that can't use Assist would still be useful if they have good moves that Assist can use. Drowzee is in the Human-Like Egg Group so If you want one with Assist you'd need a Spinda since they're in the Field and Human-Like Egg Groups so can breed with Purrloin and Drowzee. You could also use a Chimchar as a starter if you give it Assist as an Egg Move, They're also in the Field and Human-Like Egg Groups so a male one can breed the move into any Pokemon with Assist.

2:24 "We're a little stronger than that of a first-form starter." I think you're underestimating Ponyta. Its Stats are more on par with a *middle stage* starter.
    Charmeleon/Quilava: 58/64/58/80/65/80 Total 405
    Ponyta: 50/85/55/65/65/90 Total 410
A little frailer, but faster and harder hitting albeit on the side that's less useful for Fire types (85 Atk vs 80 SpA). (Remember, the entire Typhlosion line's stats are a carbon copy of the Charizard line's, at least until Typhlosion-H came around and didn't have the exact same stats as Typhlosion-J.) What about the other Fire-type starters that don't gain their secondary type until they reach their final stage?
    Braixen: 59/59/58/90/70/73 Total 409
    Torracat: 65/85/50/80/50/90 Total 420
    Raboot: 65/86/60/55/60/94 Total 420
    Crocalor: 81/55/78/90/58/49 Total 411
...Power Creep is real. Raboot definitely straight up outclasses Ponyta, a little less special defense but with better physical defense and trading off a bit of what was already Ponyta's weaker attacking stat for a bunch more HP and a little more speed and a single extra point in the better attacking stat. Torracat also seems objectively better than Ponyta, and especially with Special being a better attacking stat for Fire-types unless they have a signature move like Sacred Fire, I'd say Braixen and Crocalor are, too.
But yeah, Ponyta is easily as strong as Charmeleon, if not slightly better, and that kind of makes sense when you consider that in the original R/B/G, you wouldn't have access to them until a point in the game when you'd likely already have _Charizard_ if you started with Charmander (it was available a bit earlier in Yellow, but not much--locked by the Poké Flute rather than Surf.)
Having access to Ponyta as early as you did in DP, it was actually quite strong for that point in the game.

Fire types in Sinnoh were... unfortunate. Since Gen 4 only had 150-210 Pokemon in the Dex after R/S/E had a total of 200, the type diversity in this Gen is extremely awkward.
For D/P, it was either you picked Chimchar, caught a Ponyta, or never use a Fire type in your team at all. How did Platinum fix this? ...By giving literally 3 more Fire types so Flint could actually have a full team of Fire types. Ironically...
There are more Pokemon in those games that can learn Fire moves more than the amount of Fire types in Gen 4.

Congrats on the win. Though you would’ve beaten Cynthia way faster had you used Fire Blast over Solar Beam. You get STAB and the Burn chance would’ve fixed your HP range problems twofold, Burn would’ve axed Garchomp’s last sliver of health and halved the power of Earthquake so you’d have more going into Togekiss by default.

"Fire's neutral to both third forms of the other two Starters" Um no, Ground doesn't resist Fire, so Torterra being Grass/Ground is still indeed weak to Fire like it originally was. Empoleon does however now take neutral damage since Steel is weak to it, and Water of course resists it making it so.
I actually used a Rapidash on my Diamond team not too long ago because I wanted to use Torterra and Lucario without making Fighting-Type overlaps with Infernape. I didn't go with the "supposed best Sinnoh team" of Infernape, Lucario, Luxray, Floatzel, Garchomp and Staraptor because that's just too common and overused in my eyes. You already got my first three, then Crobat, Raichu and Golduck were the others in the team.

of course, you can add rules as you see fit
As usually, I'm writing this before you ever did the challenge
let me know in the comments if MDBA decides to do it at any point.
Comments are good for the YT algorithm after all

Solo Platinum runs are very quickly becoming "Can this Pokemon beat Garchomp?" Nothing else seems to be a problem for them with some levels, just that dang Garchomp. Fair, but brutal nevertheless.

I know you probably won't want to do another Platinum run for the next Pokémon challenge, but when you do play it again I've got a challenge idea. Pokémon Platinum with only East and West Sea Gastrodon. They can learn powerful moves like Earthquake though, so if you want to make it harder then you could use East and West Sea Shellos instead.

I can't help but notice that you're still naming your rival after G00seIt, but he hasn't posted anything on YT in almost a year. He doing okay?
Platinum was always my favourite pokemon gen, and I think still is barring Legends Arceus. It's really long though and the cutscenes have a bad habit of dragging on like most modern Pokemon titles

Team run with Pokemon only beginning with M D or B. No legendary, pseudo legendary, or mythical. Any Gen. Can't catch a Pokemon beginning with another letter only to evolve it to one starting with M D B

It would be interesting to see B2W2 with only therian landorus, considering the high capacity for interesting strategies with that thing’s massive movepool and ability to compress roles, but perhaps too easy. Maybe with some further restriction or another, like no STAB, or only special moves?

When I was a young child, the name Cynthia was synonymous with the doll from Rugrats. But in my later childhood, it's synonymous with Pokémon champion Cynthia 😅

Yeah, onix has a pretty beefy physical defense of 160, but only a measly 45 special defense. Any special attacker would have a field day with it, regardless of resistance.

    I have a run request:
Pokémon Black with only one Zorua.
The Bidoof only run did sour the Unova runs for me but maybe seeing one of my all-time favorite Pokémon could convince me to watch them again.

    MDBAMA
Hey MahDryBread! Hope you’re doing well.
So I recently stumbled upon your older Terraria playthrough series. It’s great! But it also is pretty old. With all the new content and updates being released, are you planning on doing another playthrough of Terraria? You don’t even have to upload it, I’m just wondering if you’ve been enjoying it. :)

I think a cool challenge idea would be doing Pokémon Emerald with Skitty/Delcatty but you can only use Assist. Obviously you can’t use the other Pokémon on your team for battles so the moves you’re pulling from are just what they have when you catch em. It’s like a controlled Metronome run.
I think the biggest challenge this kind of run will give you is do you have a small team so you’re more likely to get the move you want or do you go full team 6 for massive coverage but less likely to get whatever move you need at the time.

I want MDB to do the Version Exclusive runs for the games he doesn't play in the same Generation, so he can compare which is more fun. Version Exclusive runs for Blue and Silver, etc.

I'm curious if infernape would've been harder given empoleon is neutral, where infernape resists fire while also having close combat...probably not xD

Glad it's gold version he's doing it in as two of silver's exclusives are practically useless. I would have picked silver because I love Donphan and you can actually catch phanpy in the early game but seeing the list of exercises...yeah gold was the right choice

Hey how about multiple turn/hit only moves ie dig, fly, solar beam, petal dance or pin missile. no single damage moves or no damage moves. I'm thinking anything lasting multiple turn should count like fire spin sunny day reflect moves that will return to normal after a few turns. You can pick the game

Fire is NOT neutral against Torterra, ground doesn't resist fire, but is super effective against it
Edit: you also said "I name him Horsea" but your Ponyta is female

Love the video, but a suggestion. I like hearing the ideas you have, but it’s disappointing not to see them. You just say the idea, then immediately tell us that it worked or didn’t work. I know it would make for a longer video, but I feel like you should slow down the commentary and use the battles and stuff to build suspense on if the plan works or not. All in all it’s still a good video!

So, the double fights in Platinum are quite cool from a modding perspective because (if I understood it correctly) they pull your partners' teams from the same file as they would if you were fighting them. I think this means that (and I could be wrong here) people can mod the game so that you have full 12 v 12 double battles. Or alternatively, your rival could be limited in the double battles to using the same Pokemon as you do for the challenge, then go back to using his regular team when you fight him.

Hello Mr. Mah Dry Bread, I am putting this in a polite way incase others decide to roast you alive. So you were correct when you said that Empoleon is nuetral to fure type. However, torterra is not since ground type does not resist fire. I understand how this can be confusing.
