  • mrhmag.com - Bill Geiger show how to make accurate photo-quality backdrops using a computer, terrain generation software, and geo data from the area of interest. Using this technique, you can easily duplicate the terrain from just about any location, taken fron any vantage point you choose. Part of the July 2014 issue of Model Railroad Hobbyist magazine.

For the terrain modeling images, why wouldn't we want to pan the camera view instead of rotate? It seems that pannning the view point would better match the view we see as we walk the aisle. Whereas rotating the view would provide only a fixed point perspective, wouldn't it?

Neat concept!! I wonder is this can be done for computer simulated railroading like Railworks, Open Rails/MSTS Run8 and Trainz.....

Pretty soon their will be electronic backdrops with screens that’ll have moving shadows as the day elapses, changing weather and moving clouds/trees

Sure, if you own a diamond mine. If you have a layout with 100 feet of mainline (modest layout), that's about $10,000 worth of flat screen monitors. Maybe someday, but not in the next decade or two at least.

Very inspiring video, it is now 2021 and I suppose there must be tons of softwarez out there doing the same job much easier and more intuitive as well as the stitching programs?
I'm in the proces of wanting to create backdrops that blend into each other frommy own photos of European cities and nature etc so what is the easiest yet best looking way to achieve this, as I'm new to railroadmodelling as a 55+ senior ;-)

There are a few suggestions for diy railroad layout construction
Find a suitable set of plans online
Find a colleague who wants to build one too so you have someone to encourage you
(I discovered these and the reasons they work on Jareks hobby club website )

Why not just use a panorama shot out of your mobile phone or camera. Upload it to your PC and clean it up with PIXLR or Paint.net. Then send the data to a printer and have it sent to you. Make several if your layout needs it. No need to blow the big bucks on overpriced barely understandable no handbook or instruction having programs that take longer to learn than the toy train set took to build. Its a background dude, not a moon shot.

That would require going there. Sometimes that would require trespassing.

Or sometimes riding a train through there.
