When the film was made the front of Kings Cross station was obscured by a shanty town of buildings and this probably influenced the choice of St Pancras.
Hi Dawn, not a tip but Well Done on several counts:- Inspired choice of movie and your research. Metric units for baseboard size, not imperial. Auto shuttle (I've used one and they are good). Thank you Martin. Yes, you could have a lot of fun with Bond-inspired layout. The famous train scene from From Russia with Love would be great - also Bond fighting Jaws in The Spy Who Loved Me!!
I can't wait to see this. If you can get hold of John Huntley's Steam on 35mm Vol 1, there is lots of unused footage at the end of the video, all filmed for The Lady Killers.
It arrived in the post yesterday Jack - thanks to @paulrowlinson - great minds think alike! 😊 Looking forward to watching it. Please send suggestions … 😊
Looking forward to this series... Actually Grumpy's "Under Milkwood" suggestion has given me an idea for the club modular layout we're just starting work on.....

Looking forward to seeing this series! Like the idea too about a film related layout - quite fancy doing a St Trinian’s Great Train Robbery mini layout
Dear Lady Modeller, I think you'll find that I am looking forward to this series. So much so that I just subscribed (rather belatedly). The layout features you have described sound really interesting and quite exciting. 😊
I haven't watched it... but having just googled it and read the plot, it's now on my Must Watch Next list. Thank you Hugh! BTW - also in Eastmancolour which I believe was the next successor to Technicolour or a better version of it - someone correct me?
Just subscribed, I can’t believe it’s taken me years before I found a lady on UA-cam building a layout. It’s fabulous and I saw just today your Brief encounter layout which was stunning as it beautiful in its monochrome glory. By the way your presentation skills are brilliant and your video editing is very slick. Looking forward to the next few months. All the best. Alex
Dear Lady modeller, whatever the gas things are called they certainly do add to scene of a 1950s layout. I'm currently starting to design a 1950s layout, but. I'm going to build it as a modeller would have done in the 50s. Looking forward to following your build of your new layout. Kind regards Dave, from Southend on sea.
I love the way you incorporate parts of the film into the layout. I'll be watching with interest, how you progress with the project. We will have to watch the film now so that we can recognise the scenes. Good luck.
What a wonderful idea for a project! I'm a great fan of the Ealing comedies. I'm not a railway modeler ... but I'll be watching future episodes with great interest.

What a lovely homage to a brilliant film. I am told there has been a remake in recent years, but I couldn't bring myself to watch something that couldn't possibly measure up to the original. Await the next episode with bated breath (is that correct? Get Grumpy to confirm)
If you’re thinking of a sound track, I would include wheel slip from the steam engines leaving Kings Cross and of cause the clank of wagons being shunted. Leaving Kings Cross on a foggy night and hearing the engine working hard was just unforgettable. Good luck with the model.
What an incredible vision - you clearly are blessed with a vivid imagination. Regarding how to make Mrs. Wilberforce's house shake, you might consider mounting a DC motor and flywheel solidly to an interior support, then solder a small weight to one side of the flywheel. The weight should cause the motor to shake as it rotates, causing the attached structure to shake in turn. I have *not* tried this, but it seems as though it might work. Pull the DC motor/flywheel assembly from any locomotive that either runs poorly or has been damaged. Be sure the flywheel is brass - you cannot solder to a flywheel cast from pot metal. You may have heard the saying that England and the United States are two countries divide by a common language. For your American viewers, what the heck is a "first radius" track? And what are Era 3 and Era 4?
I'm going to give that a try!! :-) A 1st radius circle of track has a radius of 15 inches. BR (British Rail) Era 4 is 1948 to 1956 so locos from that period will be my go to for this layout. Era 3 is 1923 to 1947.
Well Dawn you have certainly set your self a challenge with this one and I'm looking forward to your journey in building this iconic movie themed layout. As to Mr G's suggestions, well he is Mr G after all!!!!! Maybe he should build a movie themed layout say like "Von Ryan's Express", it would keep him out of mischief!!
@@modelrailwayquest He could try the Fried Green Tomatoes movie, the train goes right past a whistle stop cafe! But it is pre McDonald's!!! Would make a great cameo/ micro layout.

My all time favourite comedy film. Have you thought about using a smoke machine to make mist. If the smoke is cooled it forms a layer of mist low down. I experimented with the idea on my Scottish highlands layout

Dear lady model maker/grumpy camera man, Under Milk Wood was, as others have said, a 009 layout built by Dave Rowe and drew inspiration from the play and Barmouth. It's featured in the April 1972 edition of the railway modeller magazine. Gas is indeed stored in gas holders. If the ones shown in the film are the ones that are near St Pancras Station then they are still there and two of them have had apartments built within them. I'm not one for modern architecture but I thought that was ingenious when I saw them back in May! The third has a park built within it. This looks to be an interesting build! 😀
Thank you! Yes, I saw the apartments - now called Gasholder Park. The gas holders were originally located at the junction of Goods Way and Battle Bridge Road. They were taken apart piece by piece and transported to Scotland to be restored and then brought back and reassembled in their current location. It’s amazing the rabbit holes you can disappear down once you start researching! 😊
@@modelrailwayquest wow that is some trip. Worth it though to preserve a piece of history. I've been down a few rabbit holes researching a layout. For an Edwardian era layout like I'm currently building, ladies and gents fashions amongst the usual road transport etc... Super! Really looking forward to the progress videos. 👍 I have a few (cheap) ideas for lighting and "gimmicks" but I'll wait until you get there before I write an "I think you'll find ......" post. Good luck and all the best.
I am also building an exhibition layout. I like the design and detailing part of it, but have always struggled with the making it reliable part. Please cover this aspect.
Hi Dawn, sounds cool, the ladykillers, grumpy must have been one of the producers, the way he trying to help you 😊 Feed grumpy some " smarties", it might help. Great idea Dawn, i like the 3 levels idea, will follow your updates for sure. I am working on 2 Funicular railroads., have a peak...😉
All the best. An interesting challenge. Your reasoning for choosing 00 is correct within the context of the project but it really would have looked far better in N.
Just discovered your channel. I love layouts/dioramas with a theme and look forward to your take on 'The Ladykillers'! I have a large uncompleted historic exhibition layout which is in three sections and have now decided to re-focus on the centre section, which is where the main interest is located.
@@modelrailwayquest It is good to have ambitions, but also remind ourselves to be realistic re. time and energy. I have found smaller projects very rewarding! Looking forward to your next video. 😊
good luck , the trembling house could be done by getting hold of an old platstation hand controler , strip the motor out with the concentric cam and place under your loose fitted house left free to move around
Phone vibrator motors are available online, these are just a small motor with an off centre flywheel. Cheap and simple. Just stick in the house and mount the house on something like a biro spring.
Watch out ladies shut the shutters lock the doors the lady killers on the loose 😂 seriously though sounds good look forward to seeing your next layout.
Hi Dawn, this looks like being a really exciting project, you might be able to use smaller scale buildings,(possibly "N"or"TT120 ),in the background,to enforce perspective, speaking of TT120,I have a collection of German outline TT120, and I've been trying to think of a movie on which to base a layout on,the only one that springs to mind is"The Cassandra Crossing", what do you think?,anyway, sorry for filling up your comments section, thanks for sharing, take care, all the best from Scotland,Stephen.
That’s a great idea - like Copenhagen Fields by the MRC. I also think the Cassandra Crossing would be fab for a layout - a chance for some interesting scenery!
To get the house to shake, experiment with attaching an off-centre weight or disc onto the staft of a motor, just like the vibration motors in mobile phones
Yes, you are right. Gas holders. I was born in a street named Gas holder street in Hunslet (romantic) nr. Leeds in 1958. (By the way Hunslet Engine Co. started making steam engines in 1864) Marshall Fowler traction engine Co. was also made in Hunslet.
For any new modelers or those stuck on their build, this video shows how to develop a story line into a substantive build. Do not rush into a track or layout plan until you have your 'story' down. Kevin, FRR
Forgot what I'm supposed to start with, so....... if you put the O gsuge interior scene at the front rather than behind the GASOMETERS😅 it would help with perspective. Just a thought otherwise good luck see you when it's finished.
Gas Holder became Gasometer due to a corruption of the words used to describe certain parts of early gas systems, where the containers resembled a piece of lab equipment originally called a gasometer. Official maps may call the structures gasometers, but this use is discouraged in technical speak by gas engineers who should still use gas holder. Also, I would include the King's Cross/Charings Hatch terminal (no pun intended) building, which is seen in several shots in the movie - then omit the rest, as I would run out of space.
Great idea for a project. I love this movie. Doesn't the 2mm layout "Copenhagen Fields" sometimes include the house? I may need to look closer and to the wagons with the actors names. I just read this on one of the comments. Thank you.
Not sure about Mrs Wilberforce's house but Tony Cox from the MRC tells me there are various Ladykiller cameos, including the gang and Mrs W. It also has the film crew just above Copenhagen Tunnel filming the railway scenes of the Belle Isle. And the PO wagons feature the names of the cast. :-)
Just had a thought while reading your reply. You mention you plan to have her house shake as a train passes. Could an inexpensive electric tooth brush mechanism be adapted to work? I'm looking forward to you future video's.
I love it when other women like building miniature world layouts as I do. Keep up the good work.
When the film was made the front of Kings Cross station was obscured by a shanty town of buildings and this probably influenced the choice of St Pancras.

@@mooglesmodelrailways I think the research and planning part is really lots of fun!
Great film. Lovely set to pick to model. :-)
Super! Really looking forward to the progress videos. 👍
I have a few (cheap) ideas for lighting and "gimmicks" but I'll wait until you get there before I write an "I think you'll find ......" post.
Good luck and all the best.
😂😂😂😂 I look forward to hearing your ideas Cowboy!
I am also building an exhibition layout. I like the design and detailing part of it, but have always struggled with the making it reliable part. Please cover this aspect.
I certainly will!
Hi Dawn, sounds cool, the ladykillers, grumpy must have been one of the producers, the way he trying to help you 😊
Feed grumpy some " smarties", it might help.
Great idea Dawn, i like the 3 levels idea, will follow your updates for sure.
I am working on 2 Funicular railroads., have a peak...😉
Ooh I’ll have a look. Love a funicular!
@@modelrailwayquest thank you
All the best. An interesting challenge. Your reasoning for choosing 00 is correct within the context of the project but it really would have looked far better in N.
Making it in 00 will make it an interesting challenge though!
First time to this, and what a superb video. Great presentation and production. Nicely done, and good luck with the build.
Thank you Stuart!
Mrs Lopsided, just wonderous.
Just discovered your channel. I love layouts/dioramas with a theme and look forward to your take on 'The Ladykillers'! I have a large uncompleted historic exhibition layout which is in three sections and have now decided to re-focus on the centre section, which is where the main interest is located.
Thank you and good luck with your project - send photos, would love to see them!
Great ideas here! Thank you!
Watch out ladies shut the shutters lock the doors the lady killers on the loose 😂 seriously though sounds good look forward to seeing your next layout.
😂😂😂
I grew up 10 minutes walk from King's Cross, we called it the gas works locally.
mandatory viewing is "YTP: The Trainkillers" by the channel HourOfPoop
I'll check it out!
I also think the Cassandra Crossing would be fab for a layout - a chance for some interesting scenery!
wow great project , I am sure we will learn lots along the way . Is grumpy going to help .
I'm not sure 'help' is quite the right word Denny!
@@modelrailwayquest 😁
To get the house to shake, experiment with attaching an off-centre weight or disc onto the staft of a motor, just like the vibration motors in mobile phones
Like a vibration motor in a ….
I've been meaning to attach one to the layout generally to give stuck locos a nudge
@@user-im3hr1ed2l I don't know what you're referring to, but at least it would fit in with the ethos of recycling and reusing...
Didn’t they also make the Scootacar? 😊 and thank you!!
@@modelrailwayquest Correct!
That’s a good point Terry! Will rethink. Gasometers!! 🙄😵💫😫 Please don’t encourage him!! 😂😂😂
Gasoneter was definitely the name used by the great unwashed.... like myself.
Thank you - always so much to learn. I'll have a look into the Charings Hatch building!
Sounds splendid, crack on . . .
I forgot to mention that wether they are Gasholders or Gasometers, they both store gas and look the blooming same to me😂
Some go up & down too..
Gasometers...they are adjustable up and down as the gas is stored.
@dathpo That's what I thought. Trouble is, we demolished most of them, so when Putin invaded Ukraine we almost ran out of the stuff.
That's a great idea. I now have quite the list so I'm going to be testing these at some point over the next month or so!
