- Throughout her many missions, Samus has had access to a variety of armors, and in this video we look through her arsenal to see what special abilities each upgrade grants her with.

Fact: Actually, there is logical use of the Varia Suit's large shoulders; they work as an air expansors/compressors with kind of a spiral inside them (to optimize the flow of air) so it can regulate Samus' temperature, thats why it protects against extreme temperatures.

My headcanon was always that the big shoulders acted as holders for extra Energy Tanks (which I always imagined worked sort of like real life fuses, but for her suit's shields only) and additional hardware for keeping the suit cool. So, I guess those heat sinks or fans or whatever could be stored inside, too.
Honestly I think it’s more adaptive shielding hardware since the suit takes less damage upon acquiring the suit as well, in a similar mannor to the hazmat puldrens from prime 3, since they adapt her shielding to take care of acid rain, but since they aren’t a full structural overhaul lack additional power to prevent damage.
Really? I always thought they housed generators, and that's why samus was never able to climb ledges.

Her visor is also designed to look like a bird, with the mouthpiece resembling a beak. It's really fitting, considering the Chozo made the suit.

I was thinking somewhat reminiscent of the Warhammer series. I'm not an expert but the overall character and armor designs on them are just so incredibly bulky and those shoulder pads can go from big to... ungodly

The Gravity Suit in SR is amazing. I was so happy with that redesign. However, the Light Suit is *art*. Best look in the franchise.

Yeah, I never liked the Varia Suit's look in Samus Returns. Mostly just the pauldrons. I was overjoyed when I got the Gravity Suit, I was like "Ohoho that is SO COOL! XD"

@@DementedSeal no the fusion suit redesign appears in the flashback. According to the game it's samus's original suit growing back (I guess since it's biomechanical) so it's only about 50% of the fusion suit.

Having just finished a run of Dread, I do love the Dread suit. The Varia's design and color is amazeballs. The Gravity Suit is nice, but I've personally never been too big a fan of the purple. To each their own.
@@DragonKnightJin personally I love the purple, but still have a hard time picking a favorite version of the suit in that game, they all look awesome (and Samus's animation in the boss fights were terrific, felt like some bosses like Kraid were getting silently sass'd)

A way to think about the Fusion Suit is that most of Samus' metal armor from the Varia Suit had to be removed, so only the black, flexible under armor of the Varia Suit was left. What little metal armor remaining when the Metroid vaccine was administered, as well as the under armor was morphed into something usable thanks to the Metroid vaccine, to give the Fusion Suit a Metroid appearance.
Perhaps as a long term side effect of the Metroid vaccine Samus could develop Metroid powers to some degree (hopefully the ability to truly fly at least), perhaps even to the point where her suit molts like a Metroid to make her suit more powerful than it ever was. Once Samus gets the Varia Suit in Fusion, she's basically an unfreezable Metroid, so. I wouldn't be surprised if Samus "grew back" her old armor looks as a long term side effect of absorbing the SA-X. I always thought that Samus' armor growing back combined with molting like a Metroid and developing Metroid powers, it could be sort of like what Spiderman dealt with when he first got the symbiote of dealing with new power/cravings while figuring out who he really is.
This is such a good idea for Metroid 5. I can already picture it, you start with the suit from Fusion's ending and, since Samus is becoming more Metroid like, she starts molting and her suit changes all the way until she becomes a queen metroid (not literally)
Now if only we had an actual sequel rather than another prequel
In the lore it confirms that her power suit is organic so I could see that being possible.

Metroid Prime... my introduction to the series. Also the game that 10 year old me got stuck on in the chozo ruins because I FORGOT I COULD JUMP
Same feeling here, I remember when I first played when I was 10, I couldn't play after sunset or else I would have nightmares (not the ones from Fusion)
The Orpheon speaking of nightmares, those scarabs in the ruins terrified me, so much so that I wouldn't go down the paths they were in... Kinda funny how dumb I was.
I honestly hope Phazon comes back in some kind of capacity. I mean, it was so cool when I first played Prime 3 cause I didn't have the luxury of playing the first two. But i do hope phazon comes back in prime 4. Because its highly unlikely given the time phazon has been around, that there's only ONE planet of the stuff. and killing the origin point of it is unlikely to kill ALL of it from the universe.
nah ruins and stuff were a walk in the park, but i always got petrified by fear at the entrance of the pirate's laboratory in phendrana drifts or when the chozo ghosts showed up. And the phazon mines lower levels... even recently i was stuck there standing still listening to the ambience and feeling the atmopshere.
One of the scariest is when you encountered the adult sheegoth sometimes but when you get the plazma beam, phendrana is yours (it is a level full of snow lol)
Fusion Suit is easily my favourite, the design is incredible and the marketing involved with the design portraying the fusion Suit as this mysterious figure next to the familiar power suit design when in actuality it's the samus we all know and love while the familiar Powersuit was actually the mysterious figure was genuis. I really hope they make a follow up to Fusion someday.
I'm also a big fan of the New Gravity Suit I just like it's more sleak tribal look and the black really compliments the colour scheme. I really hope they stick to that design going forward. I really don't think I can go back to the old look.

@@Digitalhdwmn yeah, this version of the armor looks like it can't withstand many hits and it shows in game since Samus takes way more damage from regular attacks than she did in other games.
I love the light and dark suit so much. They are so unique from all the others and the drastic shift in shape and overall appearance is just awesome.
Same reason why I like them, its awesome how the depart from the traditional form of the Varia Suit while staying to silhouette so its easy to read its Samus

I have to be honest, I might also be bias with the Fusion suit, since its the game I speed run all the time. And the idea of a two Samus fight is kinda cool, the 'new' samus trying to fight the old and overcome her own strength (represented by theSa-X)

I really dig how the Dread suit takes the Fusion Suit aesthetic and "builds it up" a bit to look like after the events of Fusion, Samus mechanically augmented the Fusion Suit to get it back to a more normal functionality.
The Light Suit is still my favorite as far as design. Just beautiful
I have a feeling that the explosion in Prime was stronger than it looked, perhaps the electric shock was beyond what her amor could handle, or it was a chance thing, could be many things, I was, as a kid, pretty pissed lol, but it made getting the abilities back feel very rewarding and to understand the mechanics with limited resources, very good.
They could have drawn it better. Maybe make her visor lights flicker, or have sparks from her joints. Or dent the armour a bit. As it is, it just looks odd that her suit was knocked offline by a simple/weak explosion.
Yeah, same here. I like to think that when she hit the wall she got electrocuted by some exposed wires, and that this electric shock was so strong that it caused some of her systems to short serket. In other words, she didn't lose her upgrades, her upgrades are flat out broken and she now needs to get new ones.
The real question is how did Samus lose all her stuff at the beginning of Super Metroid... canonically it takes place like two hours after Metroid II, yet in that timespan she somehow lost all her powerups.
That's what I assumed. the electricity caused her suit to short-circuit, damaging her ability to control things like charge beam or morphball. She had to re-pick them up to basically repair them.
I kinda looked at it as a form of character development.
She had all the cool gadgets and abilities at the beginning
She lost them and had to re-learn how to survive and fight without them
She gained new upgrades and in combination with her new experience and knowledge became a better hunter with a better suit than how she started.
Fun Facts:
There is a UA-camr called Samus Prime who does PC-emulation and custom textures, graphics and shaders for the Metroid Prime Series in 1080p-HD, as well as there being a mod that *LEGITIMATELY* gives Samus her Gravity Suit palette and a better design over in for Other M.
Too bad, even a beautiful suit like the one they made won’t fix other M.

Basic Dread suit is my new favourite. The main colour being white took a bit of getting used to, but it works well enough and retains a similar mix of colours to the Fusion Suit in the previous game.
Basic and Varia Dread might be my fav Power Suits for Samus. The design is so amazing.
Not gonna lie, the Dread Suit looking as sick as it does might have swayed me into buying the game instead of just watching someone play it on YT.
Funnily enough it never crossed my mind that we will probably be getting new armour in prime 4

I feel like Fusion is the logical midpoint between the Zero Suit and her base armor Power Suit, making her a glass tank. It balances the flexibility and agility of the Zero Suit, with less weight allowing her to grapple and hang from ledges, and the base power suit's armament and upgrade capabilities.
Samus's suit actually doesn't need any upgrades for her to survive cold temperatures, until Fusion. She only gains the vulnerability to cold in that game, due to the Metroid DNA, and that is the point where she starts needing an upgrade to survive cold (this continues into Dread as well). So any game prior to Fusion (Super and earlier), cold doesn't matter (and this includes the Prime games).
The gravity suit is my all time favourite in the metroid franchise, in Samus returns, when I saw the Gravity suit's redesign I couldn't help but admire it, Seriously the added blue lines on the shoulder pads represents as wings just screams epic.

Oh I thought it was called the "Varia Suit" because it could "Absorb all VARIATIONS of technology", being able to upgrade itself. Shows how far a kid's mind goes to explain things.
My favourite? I liked the Light Suit the most, followed by the Phazon Suit. Less bulky but not too sleek, and felt like the most significant armor upgrade you can get in any of the 3D games. Making previously near-impossible sections a total breeze while looking like some sort of space-angel. And the way you had to give it back made the most sense of all the games as well. I loved it! The Dark Suit gets bonus points for being the most "unique"-looking in my eyes. With the muted colours, unique shoulders and cool-looking morph-ball it certainly looks the most "out-there" of them all.

If Retro is developing the new Prime game then I'm expecting something similar to Prime 2 and 3 appearance, which I would be fine with.

Not to be THAT person, but the Varia suit does not protect against the most extreme of temperatures like direct contact to lava. The gravity suit does this instead allowing Samus to enter lava with no penalty to her health.
Also My favorite iteration of samus is now gravity suit samus in Metroid: Samus Returns. Coolest armor so far. BUT WHY WASN'T THE SPEED BOOSTER IN THE GAME?!?

As a kid, I thought ‘Varia suit’ referred to the suit with or without upgrades, and its ability to absorb ‘various’ new functions.
Also I think my faves are the Light Suit and PED Suit, with the Fusion Suit close behind.
I am attached to the classic Varia/Barrier suit (Prime version the most) but i really like the look of the Luminoth inspired design.
Is Prime's reasoning really the most silly for her losing her powerups? Is it truly not better than not explaining it at all? Pretty sure Other M's reasoning is the silliest reason. Just remember, we have never seen Samus affected by an explosion before, and hey, she had her back to it, so she was definitely not prepared for it as opposed to how she would be in-game.
Part of the joke is me realizing that Other M is indeed the silliest one. I know its very brief but I was just trying to use this as an opening transition before jumping into the main topic, using my first experience with the series as a drive to the 'joke'

That is definitely understandable.
Prime 1's is the silliest because you get a laugh out of it. Other M's just makes you wanna beat Adam over the head with the arm cannon.
ALL powerup losses are actually explained ingame (Except older games). Actually, in Other M you do not lose stuff AT ALL, and only get stuff, like Diffusion. The reason why you do not use it is because Adam does not authorize it. Why Adam Malkovich does not authorise stuff? Well, first of all, for example Power Bombs can melt down Federation Force Members easily, as situation progresses, there will be need in PB, but what about the Varia Suit? Probably Samus did not think that there will be need for it, and kinda forgot about it, when you encounter the boss in the Lava Area, Adam did not stand this, and REMINDED Samus about the Varia Suit. There was no need in Gravity Suit for almost 85% of the game, but Samus knew she was in space, so she did not forget about the Gravity suit, and activated it in need. The second reason why Adam authorized stuff is actually a theory. Maybe it's harder to use ALL modules at once, and it would be too easy to kill stuff for Samus, she would not even warm up, Adam wanted for Samus to be on full guard and not exhausted. I personally think the silliest loss of ALL modules is in Prime 1, because it was triggered by an big *BOOOOM*
Great video, great music choices (megaman battle network and star force were awesome), a good sense of humor, pretty well thought out and pit together, and also surprisingly informative (you pulled into from a lot of different sources that I never even knew about). You definitely have my sub dude! Also I just realized samus' mask kinda looks like a zaku from gundam! Now I wish she had a heat tomahawk!

Out of curiosity, has anyone made something that compares the defenses of all of Samus' suits across all games? Like if the Super Metroid varia suit blocks more damage than the Prime suit? Obv things like that are hard, so I was wondering if it already exists.
Yes there are comparisons made that detail how much the Varia Suit protects you per game:
Damage Reduction
NES - 50%
Metroid 2 - 20%
Super - 50%
Prime 1 - 10%
Fusion - 40%
Other M - 50%
Samus Returns - 25%
(Prime 2/3/Hunters don't apply)
The same has been made with the Gravity Suit and the additional defense it gives on top of the Varia Suit. (so if Varia is 50% and Gravity is 25% = 75% damage reduction)
Super - 25%
Prime - 20%
Fusion - 70%
Zero Mission - 50%
Other M - 75%
Samus Returns - 50%
Additionally, the Phazon suit adds 50%. and in Zero Mission the Varia suit adds 20%
The Dark and Light Suits add defense, but the actual % is unknown
The PED Suit is actually the only armor that does not boost your defenses, since it instead makes you invincible while in Hyper Mode

I really liked how the Power Suit looked in Prime. Especially with the weird color changing suit lighting. The lighting didn't make sense but I loved how it looked. My favorite suit might be the Gravity Suit but I also really like the Dark Suit.
My favorite version of the Power Suit has to be Zero Mission's. Maybe the concept art as something to do with it? I like the ominous look they gave her that resembles a comic/manga?
The concept art for it is really cool, I agree.
I personally prefer the untitled suit at the end of Metroid Fusion. Not only would it have the raw power that her normal suit has, but it also retains the agility of the Fusion Suit.

I have to say, the Phazon Suit from Prime is the best looking and most powerful suit Samus has ever received. Sure the Hazard Suit was cool and offered decent protection from the corrosive effects of acids and fuel gel... But the Phazon Suit... love those colors!
dread's metroid suit: hold my metroid dna (just so you onow metroid suit grants invulnrability to every enemy in the game and not even raven beak could harm her, until he became raven beak x)
Dark Suit is undeniably the coolest design of armor for Samus
My favorite thing about the P.E.D. suit is how mismatched it looks and as the game goes on and you get more upgrades, the suit looks more complete.

She kind of doesn't. These are almost all the same power suit, with various upgrades that can be installed such as "varia", "gravity", etc. A few of them are distinctly different, such as the fusion suit and the federation mashup suit.
My favorite Varia suit design is definitely the one from Metroid Prime 3, But I like the Gravity Suit from Samus Returns, except for the helmet

Varia suit is my favorite just because it’s damn classic. PED is my second favorite because it glows and looks badass. Love this video!
I actually really like the simple design and triangular shoulder pads of the default power suit. That's why I'm disappointed that it doesn't get different graphics in Super Metroid, and why I wish more games would let the player deactivate upgrades.
It does. The sprites don’t do a good job of conveying it, but the Varia suit sprites have rounder shoulder pads while the Power suit sprites are more triangular. You just have to squint a bit to see it.

Fusion in general is the best linear Metroid game. It really uses the linearity to double-down on the horror aspect. It's the only horror game that genuinely frightened me.
The moment that really frightened me was when I entered the cold chamber with the eerie music and saw Ridley. Then I was so disapointed when I killed him first try by just spamming is face with charged beam while barely even dodging his attacks.

Hey, future viewer here, I doubt anyone will read this but I really like how Metroid Dread's "fusion suit" is a mixture of both the fusion suit and the varia suit, since the SA-X parasite that once absorbed Samus's power suit was absorbed by Samus at the end of Metroid Fusion.
