- Buddy Holly played his last concert in Clear Lake, Iowa, in 1959 then on that same day Feb 2, 1959, a light plane crashed near the Iowa-Minnesota border, killing Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson, better known as The Big Bopper. They had just finished playing the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. The event later became known as "The Day the Music Died", after singer-songwriter Don McLean referred to it as such in his 1971 song "American Pie".
This scene is from the 1978 Movie "The Buddy Holly Story" .
I don't own any rights of this video.
Thanks for watching.
I’m glad they added the orchestra so we could hear everything and how absolutely beautiful this song is.
Gary Busey did a great job with this role notwithstanding all of the criticisms surrounding the film’s factual inaccuracies. Upon its release, this movie exposed a new generation to the music of the great Buddy Holly.
Some movies will have inaccuracies
Beautiful seeing all three on stage together Richie, Buddy and the big Bopper.
In a movie version.
@herbertwest
Yah since they died in 59 and this isn’t real footage yah the movie version , I bet people don’t invite you over much
@@robertcolacino7310 Yah, you're a very funny guy, yah...
Our favorite song, my wife and me Jody Miller sang it at her funeral. Gary should have won the Oscar. Buddy was just 22 years old.
Gary Busey was 34 at the time
no he’s talking about buddy holly
@@therealdoddfather Yes Buddy’s age when he died. What a real genius he was.
Inaccurate but thats fine ritchie was actually drummer because holly drummer got froze bite night before
His drummers name was Charlie Bunch.
💎💎💎 Gone but never forgotten 🎸🎸🎸🎸Rip
Gary Busey what a performance.
Oh Boy what a song, one of my favourite of all time.
Me too
One of the biggest tragedies of the music industry was the loss of Buddy Holly and John Lennon
John Lennon was a fan of buddy Holly
Well, it's not really his last performanse from 1959. It's a part of a film about Buddy Holly. Sorry, but the title is a clickbait.
I love that they recorded the music live instead of prerecording and lip synching. Makes a huge difference in the energy level and intensity of the performances. And yes, the movie is historically inaccurate but I've never seen a bio that isn't. What's important is giving you a sense of the man and his music. It certainly made me a fan.
It also introduced Buddy Holly to a new generation. By 1978, he was pretty much forgotten about and Gary Busey nailed it as Buddy Holly.
all in one take..I believe ( Busey flubs a line) - and...this scene...as opposed to the Apollo or other stuff....pretty much happened like this...or at least I've read......shame Busey got in that motorcycle accident...because this....pretty darn good
Gary did a really good job on True love ways !
That guitar didn't come out till 60s with that big headstock
“BUDDY HOLLY DIED LATER THAT NIGHT ALONG WITH J.P. “THE BIG BOPPER” RICHARDSON AND RITCHIE VALENS IN THE CRASH OF A PRIVATE AIRPLANE JUST OUTSIDE OF CLEARLAKE.”
“...AND THE REST IS ROCK ’N ROLL.”
Correction:
“BUDDY HOLLY DIED LATER THAT NIGHT ALONG WITH J.P. “THE BIG BOPPER” RICHARDSON AND RITCHIE VALENS IN THE CRASH OF A PRIVATE AIRPLANE JUST OUTSIDE OF CLEAR LAKE.”
“...AND THE REST IS ROCK ’N ROLL.”
⬆️That correction is the name of the city at the end of the first sentence of the caption. “CLEARLAKE,” as a conjoined name, is a city in California while “CLEAR LAKE,” a name with two separate words, is a city that is in Iowa, which was where the plane crash happened on “The Day the Music Died.” So, the caption should’ve referred to the Iowa city with two separate words in its name rather than the California city that is with a compound in its name.
This is Gary Busey as Buddy Holly, not actually Buddy Holly...
It's a shame next year didn't happen for them.
What did the band think of this movie? I read that they said that it had a lot of inaccuracies
@Alex Ramos - Yeah, I read that the Holly band didn’t like the movie , though. IIRC, they said that it was mostly fictional.
Rest in peace buddy Holly ❤❤️⚰️🌹🪦😭🕊️🛬
And the big bopper and Richie vales❤❤❤
My favorite Buddy Holly song
I just love it so much it's looks good movie made into store story about him being back in time travel would definitely be there in about few feel free family TV show on doing live
My favorite part is how he's not this stereotypical poster boy heart throb. He looks quite nerdy, and i adore that. lol
The way I always think of Buddy; he made looking uncool COOL!
BUDDY 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸HOLLY.
I love rock n roll music
That sudden, cold, freeze-frame ending... just after Buddy exclaims to the crowd: "Oh, thank-you, Clear Lake! We'll see you next year!"
Man, that grips my heart! 💔😢
Honestly buddy, holly didn’t die and he lived up till this day. I would’ve been so happy to meet you, but that can’t happen because he’s dead and alone still makes me happy that at least I know that he’s really great person and he made a lot of really good songs, but will always remember the day that music died.
Love the 50s music. Beautiful people that went on.
Heartbreaking the World lost one of the brightest lights . God bless
in the movie la bamba they did a great job on buddy holly
Yes. That was Marshall Crenshaw. He also sang Peggy Sue Got Married at the 25th Anniversary Dance in the movie of the same name.
What if Buddy lived , what would Rock be today ?
Pretty much the same, except there might be a few more recordings of him performing as an oldies act available to watch on YouTuibe.
probably about the same. But rock n roll probably would have gone on for a bit longer instead of downgrading after his death. With the result that elvis propably would have had some more competition in the later years. You also had artists like eddie cochran who was way ahead of his time in terms of guitar skills that also died young and propably would have gone on to do big things. But rock n roll was in a big downgrade when buddy died, also elvis got of to the army and after that began his movie career, jerry lee was in a scandal, carl perkins wasnt popular to keep all of it afloat and johnny cash and roy orbison began moving to different music genres. so there wasn't much of the old artists left, leaving the way open for the new rock age of the 60s.
I noticed that Gary Busey is playing a late 60s or early 70s Fender Stratocaster.
68,69,70 годы)))
That plane crash could have been avoided
Wrong guitar. Buddy Holly never played a strat with a rosewood neck
At least they got a Texan to portray a Texan
🌬💓Buddy Holly 💓Big Popper 💓Richie Valens💞
It's not buddy holly and it's not 1959.its an actor
The day the music died ❤❤❤❤❤
The Day the Music Died 😢
back when music was talent before auto tune and lip syncing
wow seeing this for this first time its sad to see how musically incorrect this is. The guitars are not period correct and neither are the amps.
Love this song❤
6:37 que música.maybe baby.
This scene is from the 1978 Movie "The Buddy Holly Story" => this must be in the first of the description.
He has been missed
So nice to see this, quality is amazing, bless him ,ho wrote some great songs in a short span of time, better than America's latest so called musicians
The his isn’t the real buddy Holly
@@asylumrain Duhhhhhh
Buddy was way better with the Crickets then having an orchestra on stage.
0:24 True Love Ways
3:35 That'll Be The Day
4:42 Oh Boy
5:54 Peggy Sue
6:33 Maybe Baby
7:26 Not Fade Away
Thanks 🙏
Isn't there any film footage of the concert? I mean the real one
No there is no known footage. A young teenager snuck in a camera, and there are stills. You should be able to find them somewhere.
At the end is the day the Music 🎶 Died 🌹😢
Гитара Fender Stratocaster 1968-1970 года, а действие происходит в 59 году, тогда головы были маленькие)
this is the beginning of the music I personally enjoy......and Busey really nailed it on the head...
The only thing I see wrong when Buddy Holly introduces JP Richards the Big bopper and Ritchie Valens Ritchie valance goes out on stage he don't carry a pamperyn he carries a guitar or he does not go out at all.....
I don't own this video, then why the CLICK BAIT ? W Anchor...
No that's Busey
A movie about the 3
GREAT👑👑👑
Love Buddy Holly to me he is the king of Rock & Roll writer producer and . musician but the movie is 85 to 90% bullsh@!! 🤔
Well it’s not sweet dreams
@@adrianhowe8840 the Buddy Holly musical that you can see on UA-cam is more accurate 😎
65th anniversary. Just now, his plane would have crashed. Rest In Peace Buddy Holly, The big Bopper, Richie Valen and Roger Simmons.
Roger Simmons???? That is wrong and the pilot name is Roger Peterson.
@@Simon-up2ud I don’t give a shit. 🤣
Is this the real performance or Gary Bussey version of The Crickets?
Its Gary
Gary.
This guy died in 1959. They didn't have color television back then. It's obviously a movie.
Holly Buddy estrella siempre un Maestro
❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🇨🇦
Garry holly lol
Sounds better than the recording
Hat's Off To Gary Busey For His Phenomenal
Portrayal Of The Legendary Buddy Holly
On The 65th Anniversary Of The Day The Music Died
May Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens & JP Richardson "The Big Bopper"
Always & Forever Rest In Peace. And Rock On In Rock & Roll Heaven

Me wife & me love this 1st song.
This movie was a great piece of fiction. Gary did a great job as Buddy. However, as any true Buddy Holly fan knows, little in the movie was true. This scene is an example: Buddy, Dion, Ritchie & Jape played the Surf Ballroom (not "Clear Lake Auditorium"). There was no orchestra. Per setlist.fm "True Love Ways" & "Not Fade Away" were not performed at this show.
Well they added the orchestra for the sound track for the movie so people could hear just how beautiful True Love Ways is. Kind of what they did with the Hank Williams story. I mean with just a guitar all the notes were not in it, in Your Cheating Heart and especially I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.?
The date on the Municipal Auditorium also said Feb. 3rd, when in fact the show was on the 2nd.
The plane crashed on Feb. 3,1959 and not on Feb. 2. The plane took off at 11:45-ish on Feb. 2. It crashed at 12:05 am the next morning which was Feb. 3rd.
No didn't watch
nep buddy!!
C'est pas lui
😢
Crazy that they have this in HD
It's from a movie. Not the real performanse.
This is fake.
You're not that smart, are you?
No Gary Bussey is singing it.
Good god. Was Gary trying to make a grave spin, for real?!
