Thank you for this. I grew up listening to buddy holly with my dad. He was a massive fan. He passed when I was 13 and I’m Now 40. He only got to 40 himself. I still listen to buddy holly as it reminds me of him. Thanks again
I discovered Buddy's music in my dad's collection as a small boy. Big fan ever since. I'm getting close to 60 now and in Scotland, not the US. I'll probably never get to visit the Ballroom or the crash site - but you took me there. I really appreciate this. And I can quite understand and imagine just how moving those sites would be to visit. Thank you, so much.
You can. Come to lubbock I use to live near his house where he got married also found one house he lived. It was down street from strip club but it’s gone now. Also he built a house that had a studio in it for his mom and dad before he died. It’s near Texas tech university. WYlon lived 40 miles west and Roy Orbison lived in another city. When he was a kid. Also a lot of movie stars lived here and lead singer from loan star went to school here also singers from the velvets were from here
Not everyday you see this kind of respectful tribute to a tragic loss of life and profound admiration to music that changed the very foundation of what we now call classic rock n roll . outstanding 10 stars.xx
I feel the emotion in this video. I am currently 45 years old and I made the decision to become a musician, whatever that meant, the day I saw the movie ‘LaBamba’ in 1987, at the age of 10. I became obsessed with Valens, Buddy Holly, The Beach Boys, and pretty much all of the great oldies groups. The Beach Boys were my first concert at the age of 12, and as projected, I bought my first guitar at the age of 13 and over the next year or two, taught myself to play by ear, mostly by playing along to songs on the radio and my small collection of tapes and CD’s. To this day, I am still a musician who has sort of moved on to learn many more instruments, and I can still recall the fire that the beautiful product these men offered the world put in my belly those many years ago!
Okay I officially LOVE this guy, he does Horror Stuff but he did an amazing Selena Tour and now this one of Buddy, Ritchie and JP. This guy is so awesome, he legit gets into this deep
I went to Buddy Holly’s high school and middle school in Lubbock, TX. I was even in the same classroom that he attended class. RIP a rock and roll legend
Nothing wrong with being overwhelmed with emotion, Buddy, Ritchie, J.P's spirits are alive and well in that building, it was rock and rolls first tragedy.
I LOVE that you feel the history of the places you go. I'm an amateur military historian and I feel the same way. When I was stationed in Germany, I had a chance to visit Omaha Beach in Normandy, The Huertgen Forest, and most interestingly of all...the Aix-la-Chapelle, where Charlemagne, the Holy Roman Emperor is buried. Keep the videos coming. They speak to us all.
My grandma would’ve been 19 at the time. I remember her mentioning how sad she was when she found out that they all passed. She said was a fan of all their music. So just seeing this, and hearing her stories just makes it all so much more real. Also, I’m from West Texas, so Buddy Holly means a lot to us! Thank you for uploading this video. I wish I would’ve been alive at that time to experience it myself!
This was extremely powerful and emotional. Those men will never be forgotten. I would love to one day pay my respects in this amazing place in history. What a privilege!! I just hope it’s preserved and never knocked down for a retail park or apartment block. There music will never die and it will live on forever. R.I.P.🙏❤️🎵.x
This video gave me chills. My grandparents met at the Surf Ballroom in 1943 or 44 right before my grandpa left to fight in WWII. They got married soon after he got back from the war and were happily married for 67 years. I haven’t thought of Buddy Holly or The Surf Ballroom in years and glad your video popped up on my feed to remind me.
Man this is my favorite episode so far. I was introduced to the music of the three when I was a kid when my dad put on the La Bamba movie from the 80’s. It’s still my favorite soundtrack from a movie. I went on to become a huge fan of Buddy and Ritchie. How can anyone who loves rock n roll not appreciate the amazing songs they put out in such a little amount of time? The ballroom and the crash site are definitely a bucket list destination for me. I’m also from Pittsburgh!
I love seeing a true music fan and Holly fan getting emotional and appreciating the absolute magic of the art and artist. So cool. Glad you got to see it in person.

as a musician of 43 yrs. this video made me tear up several times.. in just the SHORT TIME of their lives... those three made an INDELIBLE IMPACT on Music AND our lives FOREVER! Such a GREAT LOSS! :(
My dad introduced me to Buddy Holly’s music as a kid when we drove from Sydney to Brisbane every holiday and we would listen to his music, we always seem to sing Peggy Sue Got louder when it came on - our car trips were always Buddy and Elvis music.
I don’t think you’re a big dork, it’s nice to see a male feel for others. Love what you and your beautiful wife do. You bring back so many good memories.
You shouldn't feel anything but honored, I am feeling the same way through your video and commentary. Nothing wrong for showing your emotions because this is a big deal. I cried my eyes out when Eddie Van Halen died. Never met him, but he was a part of my life for 45 years. Seeing the Surf Ballroom in your video is magnificent. If you are a fan of music, this is greatly revered and honored ground. Thanks for taking us to Iowa on this very special trip.
This video was made with sensitivity and respect for the four victims. I have wondered just what the airplane was, where they were headed, and what time the crash occurred. Three brilliant careers ended tragically that cold night. Thank you for making this and posting it. Even in tis year of 2023, the song "Peggy Sue" remains the best rock-and-roll song ever recorded, in my humble opinion..

Living just 10 mins from there and almost daily being in Clear Lake it's easy to take for granted how historical the Surf is. Seen many shows there it's a great venue to watch a show. It's so cool to see someone making a video to remind me of the importance of the Surf. Great video although a sad story.
I love the way they did these ballrooms back then....where people can dance or cheer their musicians away from the seating...what a great place that you took us to. An absolutely stunning venue. I got a little choked up feeling the emotion, out of deep respect for sure, 🙏that you have for the history of these wonderful, young, icons and their tragedy. When I saw "La Bamba," the coin toss scene was surreal. Thanx, GrimmLife, for yet another awesome adventure! Stay well. Peace.
Your in depth presentation here proves that historical structures and places should be preserved because when you visit them , that history rubs off on you! Well done! 🎼👍😎
When I was a child and my parents would tell me about this, I always thought the ones who died looked old. Now when I look at them they look like baby faces. They were so young. I'm still watching your video now, but so far it is awesome!
I grew up in the 90s loving buddy holly and had a huge crush on him despite his passing. Im so greatful for your videos and the heart, soul and respect you put into all your videos. Thankyou for taking us on this tour of rock and roll history
I was 1 1/2 years old when this happened, lived about 40 miles from there. Within the past 4 years, we've visited the Surf Ballroom, the airport and the crash site twice. Chilling. I get the chills every time we visit. I was overcome with emotion. It's a feeling you can't describe. Your documentary is spot on, best I've seen. Thank you for sharing.
Once again Mike and Jessica share their passion, wonder and respect for the people and places that once were. They share all of the emotions that each subject evokes. A sincere thank you to both of you.
Your compilation here and detailed interviews are phenomenal! My husband is a pilot here in Iowa and we’ve owned a small plane flying in and out of Mason City many times. Feels very real and jarring when you’re up in the clouds above the area. 4 young guys simply going somewhere… no different than us. Got a dad who did the same for me with ‘ol rock and roll, so I get ya on the emotion. 🖤🖤
My Buddy Holly top 5: 1) That'll be the day 2) Not fade away 3) Every day 4) Learning the Game 5) What to do Sad that the pilot also was so young - maybe 20 years old. "The Day the Music Died ", by Larry Lehmer, is a great read and excellent source on the crash (and that music era too ).
I found your channel when UA-cam recommended your Clutter family murders. I shared it with my daughter-in-law and she liked it. I appreciate the respect and sensitivity that you give to all of those who have passed. And that you remind people to be respectful of private property. The owners of this land are amazing people for letting others come to pay their respects. They could demand a charge to go there, but they don’t. They have my respect. So much talent was lost that cold winter night.
It's May 2023 and I've just watched this. Thank you. I've always wanted to visit and pay my respects but am on another continent and that is never going to happen. This was the next best thing. You are both so respectful and this was so heartfelt.
Waylon Jennings carried guilt from this for his entire life; he became a victim of this tragedy, as well. A truly heartbreaking event in American music history. Always RIP, Buddy, Ritchie and JP... 🌹🌹🌹 Beautifully done video, guys... ❤
It's crazy to think Waylon Jennings was almost on that plane. Without him there would be no "good old boys" theme song for the Dukes of Hazzard. Amazing when you think about how things happen and how it effects history.
Now imagine how much music we missed from Ritchie at 17 years old. Imagine all he would of done. I don’t think someone that important has died from a aircraft accident until Kobe died. Such a loss of icons. I feel so bad for richies brother. I lost a brother so I can’t imagine how he felt in losing his lil brother so young
As a lifelong fan of these three men, thank you for taking the time to create this video for fans like myself and my father who may never get the chance to ever see this in person. You both created this video so incredibly and I can't thank you both enough
Crazy story. I was on a cross country road trip last summer and this was the last real stop after going for a month on the way back home to the east coast. I’ve always been a big Buddy Holly fan so this was a special pilgrimage for me. My friend and I visited the Surf and then hiked out to the middle of the field on a 90 degree day at the end of July. I had about a minute to absorb it before a kitten came out, running right under the 3 records to greet myself and my friend. She was incredibly friendly, and had an injury on her leg. No animal shelter within 50 miles was willing to help her, so I went and got supplies while my friend stayed with her. We drove 26 hours straight back and she now lives with my dad. We named her Holly.
That was my daughter's cat. Nippy McWhiskers. She loved playing in that field, and always came home after a little while. My daughter has been heartbroken ever since you stole it. Monster.
@@Rob-dp3vr If the cat belonged to someone , why was it out and about with an injury , instead of being kept in for awhile after treatment from a vet ? I don't let my cats run around with injuries ..
I grew up listening to the music of all 3 of these great men. My mama loved The Big Bopper. I remember watching The Buddy Holly Story when I was in grade school and he captivated me. As a young teen, I lived in the same city as Ritchie Valens (Pacoima, CA.), although it was decades after they tragically passed away. My emotions were definitely raw watching this. Thank You for telling the story with the respect that it deserved. ❤️
I just went to Clear Lake a few weeks ago...as a huge Buddy Holly fan, I was overwhelmed with emotion when I entered the ballroom and went to the crash site....it was a clear, sunny beautiful day with a light breeze...at the crash site, I could feel Buddy's presence...I felt at peace knowing Buddy was at peace in that moment...thank you for covering this...♥️
At 39:10 she starts recounting the story in a way that almost makes you feel she was there. She is giving facts but speaking in a narrative that is so authentic. Well done.
Let the tears flow, brotha! I love seeing someone’s feelings and passions coming out!! Music means a lot to me, I love seeing others feel the same way ✌️
This has got to be the most in-depth and highest quality version of covering this. Thank you. This was incredible to watch. I appreciate that you two care just as much as any other real artist/musician. We can feel how powerful it must have been for you both to walk these steps.
Thank you for You Tube sight. I am 63 years old and was born 27th June 1959 and a Australian not long after this happened. I like how you put so much heart into these films you do. Very touching. Thank you again for your all out work
I was born 2 years after this plane crash. But I grew up with all of their music. My Brothers had all their records and they'd tell stories about all three of these legends. It felt like I knew them in life from my Mom and my older brothers. It really affected an entire generation of kids. Then Don Mclean came out with the song in 1972 "American Pie" and watching my Mother and Brothers listen to this song and seeing the solemn look on their faces, it was heartbreaking. I feel very sad for what happened to these three stars, but i know from the older generation, they were completely devastated from Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Boppers deaths .Thank you for this video.
Your relatives knew that music wasn't the same since that ill fated tour. There was another spirit in the music , more nihilistic, if you want . Some even say that innocence in music died in that crash.
I've watched other videos about this and yours is one of the best. The respect that you both have shown is unmatched but what is different is the honor and reverence you gave is strongly felt. Ty for bringing us along to experience these sacred spaces and this special place in time.
I can't help but think that the untimely deaths of Richie Valens, Buddy Holly, and the Big Bopper immortalized the Surf Ballroom. It probably would've already been demolished years ago and so glad that it's not. Amazing venue.
Even though I'm only 34 I grew up listening to Buddy Holly and Richie Valens, in fact the first movie I remember watching was La Bamba so I totally get the emotions that come forth when visiting this historical site. I'm getting misty eyed with ya. Keep doing what you guys do, I absolutely adore you both and look forward to one day saying hey in the UK
My dad was in high school when the crash happened! He got me into Richie, buddy and big bopper ! The movies about their lives gives me the chills ! Thank you so much for the most beautiful tribute ever 💗
I remember being very young when this happened. My brothers were their age when these icons died They died on my brothers birthday. My brothers were 17 and 19. They would dance with me to their music. May they all rest in peace
This story has always been near and dear to me my whole life. First off I was born and raised in Iowa. Next they died on Feb 3rd 1959 and I was born Feb 4 1959. Somehow as my soul was coming into this world and these souls were leaving this earth we passed. I love music can't sit still when I hear music. I always feel so sad when I see The Surf and feel the loss like I was there. They did find Buddy's glasses in that corn. Field years later. The day I was born the world was in morning and I've always felt it. The energy of that ballroom is bittersweet. Enjoyed this one the most which knocked the David Oman house. You and Baby Ghoul are really raising the bar of professional content you bring to your channel.
Even through video, you can feel the presence of history and the magnitude of the impact on that fateful day. I had the opportunity to visit the Surf many years ago and the atmosphere is intoxicating and almost church - like in it's ambience. I stood facing the stage, closed my eyes and could almost hear my favorite Buddy Holly tune Cryin' Waitin' Hopin'. I left with a deep appreciation of not just the music, but the loss of their lives that impacted so very many of us. Long live the music, the memory and the legend they gave to our lives. Long live Rock and Roll. Great video and commentary. We definitely feel your reverence and emotion in this video Michael and Jessica. On behalf of all the dedicated Grimmlins out here, thank you.

Thank you for a wonderful documentary. I appreciated that you weren't ashamed to shed a tear for the musicians you love. It shows a deep level of respect little shown nowadays.
Thank you for this. I grew up listening to buddy holly with my dad. He was a massive fan. He passed when I was 13 and I’m
Now 40.
Waving in Scottish 👋
Yea same here is so chilling like omg I have no words
Also a lot of movie stars lived here and lead singer from loan star went to school here also singers from the velvets were from here
Cool 😎 u lucky 🍀 live there Colorado ugh
Rip
Thanks for broadcasting this memorial for buddy Holley and Richie Valens and Big Bopper fans
It's amazing how original (and in beautiful condition) they kept that place.
They will never be forgotten. Thank you both for all you do to bring us history.love you both❤
so great the place has been perfectly preserved, even the boothes
My grandma would’ve been 19 at the time. I remember her mentioning how sad she was when she found out that they all passed. She said was a fan of all their music. So just seeing this, and hearing her stories just makes it all so much more real. Also, I’m from West Texas, so Buddy Holly means a lot to us! Thank you for uploading this video. I wish I would’ve been alive at that time to experience it myself!
The way you honor them with respect shows what a class act you both are! Keep em coming you guys rock!!
It is now a National Treasure....It was almost going to be dropped years ago...
I love the story of you delivering food to that elderly woman and you dancing with her. You have a kind soul ❤️
You can just feel the teens sitting in their booths, chatting and laughing, boyfriends and girlfriends. It’s unchanged. Surf Ballroom is sacred.
I still go to concerts there. I live about 30 minutes away.
@@teresahansen863 what kinds of acts did you see?
Now mostly dead or very old...
There is a Plaque from The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inside The Surf Ballroom representing its part of Rock & Roll history.
Buddy Holly's one of my favorite musicians ever. I'm from Lubbock so sometimes I visit his gravesite to pay my respects. Thanks for doing this.
just got done watching La Bamba brings me to tears everytime
Very thorough presentation. You captured the tragedy and the emotion of this tragic event.
Don't feel silly, bud. My parents introduced me to rock with all the great 50's music. I have listened to Buddy for HOURS and HOURS.
I am so AMAZED that someone had the wherewithall to preserve this HISTORICAL SITE - THANK YOU !!!
WHAT AN INCREDIBLE VIDEO TRIBUTE - - THANK YOU - WE ALL THANK YOU - LET YOUR TEARS ROLL - BUDDY,J.P. AND RICHIE CAN ALL FEEL YOU - HELLO FROM HOLLYWOOD JOE
as a musician of 43 yrs. this video made me tear up several times.. in just the SHORT TIME of their lives... those three made an INDELIBLE IMPACT on Music AND our lives FOREVER! Such a GREAT LOSS! :(
Very short 😢🤎.
❤
Far from it. He’s a Cool Cat 🙏🏻
I thought it was beautiful, I could truly feel his emotions and even I got teary eyed too!!
I concur wholeheartedly. Love you guys! 💚🖤💚🖤💚🖤
I met Ed once. Unfortunately he was very intoxicated, but shook his hand and welcomed him to our town.
It was a Beechcraft Bonanza, similar to this one

Living just 10 mins from there and almost daily being in Clear Lake it's easy to take for granted how historical the Surf is. Seen many shows there it's a great venue to watch a show. It's so cool to see someone making a video to remind me of the importance of the Surf. Great video although a sad story.
How lucky you are
Do u have the same drug using people like the 60'$ did ?
I live in Mason City and I completely agree with you
I'm 42, born 1980. I grew up on 50s & 60s music, thanks to my grandma. There will never be music like that. Holly, Vallens, Richardson RIP
Stay well. Peace.
Much respect to both of you for the respectful way and tribute you give to these music legends. Bravo.
Thank you for doing this video and sharing it with everyone. It's very touching.
My Buddy Holly top 5:
1) That'll be the day
2) Not fade away
3) Every day
4) Learning the Game
5) What to do
Sad that the pilot also was so young - maybe 20 years old.
It is sad that these talented young people died so young and tragically. Love the boooths, dance floor and whole vibe of the place.
So much music from Waylon we would’ve never had.
Imagine the music that those 3 would
Of made. Could say the same about them
Now imagine how much music we missed from Ritchie at 17 years old. Imagine all he would of done. I don’t think someone that important has died from a aircraft accident until Kobe died. Such a loss of icons. I feel so bad for richies brother. I lost a brother so I can’t imagine how he felt in losing his lil brother so young
@@walterdiaz7315 aaliyah?
@@walterdiaz7315 skynyrd losing members in their plane crash was pretty big.
It's good that Roger Peterson is included on the memorial outside the Surf Ballroom. He too should not be forgotten.
❤
Our thoughts exactly. They did really good
I agree. Its called an accident for a reason
@Ben Dover I agree it was preventable. Books are good if it's all true. I've found out all I could. Day time would've helped
Absolutely the most well done video on You Tube. Extremely moving.
For some reason you sound so calming in this video Micheal. My favorite Ghoul couple❤ ty for anther great docu ❤
Monster.
@Rob-dp3vr if this is true this is such a coincidence you find the man who took your cat years later in youtube comments
Hopefully we can still file police charges on you for stealing a little girls cat
@@Rob-dp3vr If the cat belonged to someone , why was it out and about with an injury , instead of being kept in for awhile after treatment from a vet ? I don't let my cats run around with injuries ..
Anyone who helps an animal in need is a friend of mine , love the story ..
The music 🎼🎶 will never die R.I.P . Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens gone never forgotten 🎼🎶🎵
Well done.
The music lives on that is for sure. Wonderful and thoughtful presentation. RIP to Buddy, Richie and the Big Bopper.
Let the tears flow, brotha! I love seeing someone’s feelings and passions coming out!! Music means a lot to me, I love seeing others feel the same way ✌️
Dude, you delivering a pizza and ended up dancing with an old lady was so wholesome.
This has got to be the most in-depth and highest quality version of covering this. Thank you. This was incredible to watch. I appreciate that you two care just as much as any other real artist/musician. We can feel how powerful it must have been for you both to walk these steps.
Loved their music especially Buddy Holly. It's sad that they died so young. I can only imagine how many more wonderful songs they would have given us.
Thanks for this video,I'm born 1960 but I have loved Buddy Holly seen the first time I heard him and even bought a LP.
Their music is ALIVE! They are alive in our lives!
I've watched other videos about this and yours is one of the best. The respect that you both have shown is unmatched but what is different is the honor and reverence you gave is strongly felt. Ty for bringing us along to experience these sacred spaces and this special place in time.
I LOVED this. Thank you so much for taking us here. I have an eternal love for those 3 artists.
This place is eerily beautiful. The fact knowing this was the last place Buddy Holly and his band performed gives it that eerie vibe
I can't help but think that the untimely deaths of Richie Valens, Buddy Holly, and the Big Bopper immortalized the Surf Ballroom. It probably would've already been demolished years ago and so glad that it's not. Amazing venue.
Don't ever feel silly. You guys are amazing and it shows you are human
I was there in 2015. One of the most historic rock and roll locations in the world. Thanks for the memories
My dad was in high school when the crash happened! He got me into Richie, buddy and big bopper ! The movies about their lives gives me the chills ! Thank you so much for the most beautiful tribute ever 💗
I remember being very young when this happened. My brothers were their age when these icons died
They died on my brothers birthday.
What a gorgeous tribute. Beautiful to know our souls are still honored
" A long long time ago, I can still remember, how that music use to make me smile. " -Don Mclean
I was seventeen when I was there, in 1959 it was awesome
Man, an emotional video indeed!! I've been a fan of Ritchie Valens since seeing La Bamba when it came out (i still have the soundtrack on vinyl) and of course, Buddy Holly, after seeing the incredible Gary Busey performance in 1978 on video (also have the soundtrack on vinyl). This event is part of rock's mythology and i still get chills when i watch those movies or hear the real guys play those songs. They are rock 'n' roll royalty ❤
Absolutely agree
