Bro this expression is so weird for me since English isn't my first language. "thanks for having me" sounds like "lucky you have me" I know, off topic but I can't ignore it 😭😂. Great video btw.
@@davidkekstroll5836 it’s definitely like “I am honored to be invited” as opposed to “you should be happy that I even said yes” 😂😂😂 that being said, I am sure this is a mutually beneficial relationship and appreciate both Andrew and Dingwall for giving us this demo
I've currently got my Hondo II Longhorn Professional (sunrise era, gold truss logo) in C standard but it goes to BEAD just fine. I love having a low-tuned 4 string around.
Hey Andrew, you actually have the pickup position diagram backwards. When you're on the second setting, you're actually playing the bridge and the neck in parallel, not the back 2. And on the 3rd, you're actually playing the bridge and middle in series. I only know because I have the same bass and know the sound like the back of my hand haha. I think you just have the pickup positions backwards. It's easy to get confused when looking at the diagram and the easiest way I could tell was from the neck position soloed while playing clean. You get the classic vintage p bass tone. So your first position in the video is actually neck soloed.
Whenever Dingwall and others will dodge the headstock altogether, and make headless basses with a 37.5 scale low B you won't have to hunt down special custom made strings, that costs a fortune. All regular sets will fit without problem (except those with red silk on). I've measured them and there's ample slack space for them. They clamp down exactly after the zero fret, on a headless "headpiece". No need for tapered strings or whatever. If you have a 4 string with 36.5 scale low B you can even buy those with red silk on. They'll fit. Cheaper for the customer and more options to choose from. I think it's totally off that you have to buy a "bespoke" 5 string set for multiscale basses, when it's really just the low B string that needs to be extra long. Maybe the low E too, from certain select manufacturers. All the rest of the strings will fit from any run of the mill manufacturer.
My other 4 favorite low tunings are: the low Bb tuning, tuned in fifths, and it’s called the Cajun tuning #1 (Bb0, F1, C2 & G2), the low A standard tuning (A0, D1, G1 & C2), the low G tuning, tuned in fifths (G0, D1, A1 & E2 [just like the violin & the mandolin]), and the low F tuning, also tuned in fifths, and that’s called the Cajun tuning #2 (F0, C1, G1 & D2 [just like the Cajun tuned fiddle & mandolin]).
If I wanted have this in Drop C ... which string set would be recommended on it? I believe having 5 string set with 4 lower strings would be too much tension?
I have been playing the lower 4 strings of a 5 string set on my regular bass for 20 years, and it works fine. Without the multi scale construction, though, the higher strings are a bit too tight, but that cannot be helped without changing the scale length of the instrument.
So if you’re putting a string in the first slot that’s .130 instead of .100, does it fit okay or does the nut need to be altered? I’ve never used this tuning on a 4 string bass.
Good video. What you forget to mention is that there aren't that many BEAD string sets around. Other than "bespoke" string manufacturers. You have to buy a full 5 string set and waste the high G-string. Totally waste. I've managed to discard and dispose of all my 5 string basses, and resort to a Dingwall NG3 4 string tuned BEAD instead. If I want that "high g-string" I just strap a CAPO (yes a capo) on 5th fret and voila, you have it tuned EADG again. The 36.5 scale low b-string is enough for producing that low B clear and articulate all along the strings length. Using a CAPO you can "downtune" by just moving the capo one fret down, and you're in Eb. And so on, no need for HipShot drop D tuners or anything. Retuning all of the time between numbers, is a nuisance, as you alter the strings tension and increase flubbiness. If using a capo on 5th fret to "tune normally" makes it easy to go past 12th fret, and the notes DOES NOT sound sour up past 12th fret on the low B string. And it doesn't sound like a short scale bass at all, because of the thicker gauge of the strings. They are STILL at full tension and multi scale length. This is a huge misconception that is floating around. Like the sustain would change just because of a capo on 5th fret, differs from just fingering on 5th fret. Jeez.... On a regular fretted bass this ain't possible. To do the capo thing on BEAD. Notes sounds too un-intonated up there on the low b. Tip when using a capo on 5th: Don't ever look at the dots or fret markers! That is the crutch, not using a capo.
I had NG 5 strings so it's 37 at the top. But I sold it and I love the sound of them. I want only 4 strings and that's 36.25 at the top. I couldn't get on the board with the 37 scale at the top. So I am thinking 36.25 and not that wide neck should be better right? Because I absolutely love their tone. And no not only the distortion but these cleans are soooo niceee
Anyone have experience with tuning a Dingwall 4 string even lower than BEAD? Like Drop G? I know that’s ridiculously low, but I am trying to get to a tuning that low without it sounding like complete mud
I keep my Dingwall Combustion 5 string in drop G, it performs extremely well even that low. Using this method with the 4 string you can probably achieve very similar results, but keep in mind that the scale length on that low G is going to be a bit lower even with the fanned frets. So it might not have the same clarity and stability as a true 5 string, but it should be relatively close.
I've been wanting to try that. Are you using the regular Dingwall 5-string set? Is the taper of the .130 low B in the right spot to fit the tuners? I was worried it might be misaligned because it's meant for the 37" scale.
Awesome video! Just bought the same model (came with e-a-d-g tuning and a 100 low E set). My entire purpose in buying this bass was to play lower tunings: Drop-A (90% of the time) Regular BEAD (10% of the time). Here are two questions from me: - For Drop-A, it is my understanding that Dingwall recommends a 150 string for that dropped A - is this correct? I do have a regular 5-string set (130 low B), so I first want to try that, but if I must go 150, I will! Does Dingwall sell single 150 strings? - Given that I will mostly play in Drop-A, I will ask a pro guitar tech to set it up for me for Drop A (and not b-e-a-d): is this your recommendation? Thank you!
A video I’d like to see is, and you can make it serious or funny would be switching between playing a bass to your 8 string guitar. Just because they are different but you can play both. Just an idea
Hi, nice video & weird because over the last week (I've a 4string Combustion) I was just messing around & dropped the E to a B just to see how it sounded which was great! Anyway I started making up a couple of things then realised I'd left A D G as normal so it's now B A D G which I got some good riffs going, has anyone else tried this on the standard 4 string? I'd love to get a 5 string but too much money for me, a guy in the shop I got it from said I could just get an extra nut then file that down for the B to sit right which I'm not sure is right as you didn't mention it in your video? Then apparently its easy to swap nuts for certain situations, yeah I know seems like alot to do but would be interested in your opinion, thanks for sharing your vid 🎸👿🎸

Standard length strings don't reach the nut on a Dingwall. So even if it is headless, if the string start to tapered before the nut you can't use them

You shouldn’t need to go so thick because of the scale length - that’s the point of it
