Great to see you back folks. They used hazel rods here for the bows and bars, fastened together with copper roofing nails(i think) and from distant memory i think they treated the netting with cold fix tar to preserve it.

      Hi Sean
Thank you so much for your comment and kind words.
Your support means the world to us.
      That is great information, Sean.
It amazes me how the creel has been developed and improved over the country and countries, and what the men of old used to do to get some more time of their usage.
They used to tar them here as well, with signs of tar baths everywhere.
I used to hate the smell of it all as I remember some of the older fishermen still doing the tarring in the 80s.😁👌
Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend
      All the best😊

That was absolutely brilliant it was so interesting to hear how and what the original creels were made off realy educational and apprenticeships from old masters the only way, these skills cannot be learned infront of a computer or on paper only years of experience can cover everything required same thing is happening in other employment exams on paperwork and no practical hands on skills, Well done Barry this was great, glad you're feeling a bit better 👍

      Wow, Anne!
What a wonderful yet true comment!
Thank you so much for sharing your views ( that I share with you) and telling how it really is.💪
It's certainly an upside down world just now, with no real end to the madness.
But that's what happens when the educated with zero morals or forsight are left in charge, and don't get me started about the lack of experience 🙈🤪🤪🤪😂😂😂

Brilliant as usual, very interesting indeed. I can't wait until the next episode. Informative, interesting, and very well presented. Really you should be offered a job presenting on TV. I love all your videos.
Hell ! We sold 5 creels for £20 pound each 2 months ago as we can't get out as much now......... we didn't know that they were so dear.
We only have 2 left........ I think that we will keep them for a wee while yet along with the keep pot.
Glad to see you back after illness and long may you continue your vid's.
Best wishes from your Northern Ireland top fan !!

Thank you so much for this kind message.
I'm not quite sure about the TV thing as you have seen in the bloopers. I can't say the same thing twice. It just doesn't compute 🙈😂😂😂
Yeah, new gear is very expensive at the moment, hence why I make mine from scratch. Even for my small fleets, it would be £1200 just for the creels🙈 scary prices indeed.😔

Gday mate glad to see you back on deck i tell you what geoff must have the paitence of a saint some days 😂 i see your haveing lovely weather there i was waiting for the snow plough to come by . I know i will enjoy the rest of the videos as it is a good insight into how things are made and as you said the history of fishing in your part of the world , most of our pots are now made from steel but they still have many boats that use the cane pots im not sure if they still make cane ones i suppose if you can get the cane you could make them .
As you said what works in your area the cray (lobster) fisherman in south australia (were i live ) use different pots to the guys in western australia and the guys in tasmania use the same as the south australian fishers we are mainly a prawn fishing state and have trawlers out now had 4 anchored of the local beach a few weeks ago waiting for the season to open and get into it although down the south east there are a good number of cray/lobster boats the ovrnemnt are trying tomake this the seafood capital of australia ( what a load of toss) anyway all the best look forward to the next vlog .

      Hey buddy.
As always, thank you so much for your very entertaining and informative comment, bud.
I think cane is very hard to come by these days, and if you can, the expense, the same as jute 12mm rope, is just as expensive.
It's really, really, so eco-friendly, but it costs the earth.
I'm not surprised the man goes for the cheaper options.😁👌
When I 1st was shown how to make a creel ( way back in the early 80's) sugar cane was the material to be used by most fishermen, and it was easy to come by.
I would live to get back to that kind of sustainability, maybe one day when I'm rich and famous 🙈🤪😂😂😂😂
      All the best, me, pal.😉👍

But I have found all you do interesting, yup even surprised me 🤣

Glad to see you up and well Baz... Great vidio Barry once more.. Absolutely fantastic viewing and like most had no idea how many different creels there were.. wouldn't it be fantastic if all of us on here could pledge a few pounds to enable you to build just one fleet of biodegradable creels in your viewers names . The fans fleet... I would put £50 upfront to start the fund of. Would love to see you catch a lobster or 10 in them ... Dont think that has been done before? Yes in patrons payments but not to build something to show just how far the making of creels has progressd and probably cast you back in time to work a fleet of the past . Just my tuppence worth .
Hopefully your back at sea soon Baz ..

Jeff and I ( mostly jeff) will be setting up a new website for next year, and we can certainly put something like that in to help raise funds,as biodegradable is the future in my eyes. 😍😁👌

Brilliant, I think these videos are great for hobby fishers like myself. As you touched on, it's hard to get info sometimes if you don't belong to a fishing family. I have put out a creel or two before, but am looking to do quite a few more next year. Based in South Uist.

Hi Barry enjoying your vlogs as always mate, I take my hat off to you for thinking about sustainable creels, after storm babet there are a lot of creels up and down the coast line.
The cost of rope is a real problem, but would it be worth checking out willow as you say instead of plastic for the structure? it is easy to grow, really quick and dosen`t take much looking after, you can grow your own source and coppice it when needed. Just a thought mate, I enjoy your channel mate, take care out there.

      Hi Scott
Thank you so much for the wonderful and great suggestive comment.
We actually used to use sugar cane back in the 80's unfortunately it got rare, and with all rare things expensive, I think that's why most fishermen turned to the plastic, cheap and ready available.
Absolutely no good for the sea and all the beauty within it, but practical all the same.😂😂😂😂
Let's hope one day, OMAHB will have fully sustainable gear.🤞😁👌

      Hi Terry.
Thank you for your comment and question. And the answer can be yes, creel theft can be a big problem.
If its not the whole creel going missing, it the stock in them.😲😔
It really is a disgrace as the fishermen work hard to earn their keep, and gear going missing is a BIG financial blow😔

      Hi Garry.
Actually, the proper name for a " creel" was what the fish wives used to carry the herring in to cart them from A to B.
I don't know where in history that our lobster pots tuned from pots to creels, but I'm sure someone will be able to tell us down the line.🤞😁👌

I'm looking into this question in the Outer Hebrides, and I reckon that before the arched creel came about, something much more similar to a creel (ie like a willow basket) was used. I'm not sure what it's called in English, but a version of a "sguile" was used in the early days (c1850s) of the lobster industry in the Hebrides.
