I’m just saying, when a dude walks in with a headless, wearing hiking boots, shorts, knee brace, and a tommy Bahama shirt that would make your creepy uncle bite his lip; the dude is gonna shred
None of them are smiling except Rick, but they are all listening with intent. It's easy to think someone isn't interested when you judge them by their facial expression, but that unflinching gaze is pure focus.
And he's playing a natural wood body heaadless guitar, instead of some flying V or other flashy-body guitar! lol I love that guitar. I built one just like it, but the wood grain was kind of ugly so I painted it black. I'm goint to strip that paint that after seeing this! :)
Devin isn't even in the top 50 of best vocalists. Maybe top 200 which would be a hell of an honor. Same for his guitar playing. He's not number 1, but he's absolutely my favorite musician and public figure in general.
It’s not the shredding itself but the little inflections, the touch and feel he has when he hits certain notes. And of course he’s got that very effects saturated tone to just adds to it all but I think it also guides what he plays. He “feels” the reverbs and delays, toys with them. It’s how he’s still able to, in a room with John and tosin and Rick, still make guys watch intently and go wow. He’s a gifted and unique Musician. His solo on the song Failure is a total must listen for anyone who likes what he played here. He messes with time and feel during it in a way that just warps your brain lol
Yeeeeeeaaaa I agree with everything you said 👍🤘I don't understand how underrated Failure's solo is, it's one of his top 3 all time solos along with Triumph and Deep Peace
Something about this solo that brings a tear to my eye - you can keep your instagram shredders and guitar tricksters, this guy is worth a dozen of them.
The whammy on the last notes make them so much more alive.. and the way he just shreds some and let the delay (reverb? Not good with terms) go a full "round" before continuing is just.. so intuitive, really flows and blends together perfectly!
He’s crazy, he’s kooky, he’s cool… unbelievable talent. Got to meet him at a clinic a few years ago, and he was so kind and he signed my SYL album. He went out of his way to tell me his experience recording it with Gene Hoglan and the vibe of the studio. Amazing dude
@@rlm4471 I don’t by any means mean he’s clinically nuts or anything, his brain is simply wired a special way. His approach to songwriting is not conventional at all, and I I love it
You’d think Ryan renolds would have given him a guest spot on a Deadpool movie. I mean Deadpool action scene to deadhead live would be a mind bender and it would solidify Canadian talent as a permanent main stay. Totally missed opportunity imo.
"When I play live, I'll hire somebody to play the complictated bits, I want to feel like I'm driving a biv truck!" Devin Townsend. Also Devin Townsend:
Stuff? Lmao 😂😂 he’s amazing! The amount of albums and what he puts out is mind boggling. The 3 guys here there in my life have been the most influential to me to write music, Devin is the biggest. He is in a different head space. And I think you need that sometimes, he does something that I get inspired, and it’s not the heavy stuff, but the more mellow. He’s awesome.
Holy lord god i keep coming back to this because of how amazing it is 😍 That looping tapping run is just out of this universe... The way the reverb washes around it, i could seriously listen to him do that for hours 🌌 Remeber people, it was Devin Townsend that created the universe
I watched tosin the entire time in the interview and he is so still his eyeballs are even frozen in place, he's so focused on listening to each and every piece of this. You don't want to think, you just need more.
Saw all 3 of them in Phoenix on the last night of the DreamSonic tour. OMG they were awesome!!! 2 people never showed up and a security guard pulled my daughter and her friend up to front row/center and was 3 feet from Devin, JP, James LaBrie and Tosin Abasi. I'm both super jealous and extremely happy for her.
Good god almighty. I love Devin so much. He is something else. The chops of Jason Becker and the feel of Jeff Beck. Oh, and the insanity of Zappa. No wonder Vai loves him so much.
Devy plays the fuck out of the guitar and has everyone mesmerised in that room. He then proceeds to shrug his shoulders and say "stuff" like that was just a brainfart or something. Class 😂
Could defo hear elements of Eddie van Halen and Steve Vai in there, great riff, hit me spiritually. Erm… how can I have reached 60 and never heard of this guy?!!
He dresses like your uncle-in-law, he watches arctic train videos, and, somehow, that translates into being one of the coolest people on the face of the earth.
Devin and Vai have the most instantly recognizable Wah sounds on Earth. Totally unique to each. The fact that Devi got his first real break in the biz with Steve is just a coinkydink. Scary to think the guy plays as well as he sings. He’s a legit closet Guitar God.
Shame the tour with Vai was so debilitating. Devy got his start with Vai but his breakthrough by literally making an album yelling about the industry and how awful that experience was. Though thankfully he and Vai later made up.
The most I've ever commented on one video. If you can impress those 3 guys, you're doing something right. Can't get over the very last note, brain melting.
I’m just saying, when a dude walks in with a headless, wearing hiking boots, shorts, knee brace, and a tommy Bahama shirt that would make your creepy uncle bite his lip; the dude is gonna shred
Possibly the best comment I've seen ever
Hiking boots?
And has a symbol used by LZ in the middle of his fret board
Facts.
I'm not exactly sure what you just said, but ya, the dude can shred.
"Stuff!"
- Devin
*standing ovation*
I mean
Hope Rick has Devin back on again sometime. He really did some Jedi stuff in this interview.
It was my favorite interview Rick has ever done
@@jjames6990 Same here
Devin's ideas and view on guitar and music in general is very out of the box. Very interesting interview
Just imagine John Petrucci saying "that's awesome!" right after you play some stuff in front of him! 🤯🤯🤯
"Stuff"
he would say that if a kid plays smoke on the water. he`s just a nice guy.
Just look at Rick, John and Tosin all smiling, mesmerised and loving what Devin is playing, priceless.
Devin is a bad ass.
You gotta be nuts, they're not enjoying that
I saw that. And I would be too. 👍🤘❤
None of them are smiling except Rick, but they are all listening with intent.
It's easy to think someone isn't interested when you judge them by their facial expression, but that unflinching gaze is pure focus.
Three last notes..... This Is heaven
Also the first three notes of the "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" theme, which he regretfully didn't close
@@julikun724thank you, I heard that and was like, is he summoning aliens?
Stuff!
I had to replay the vid for those
Devin's brain is different. We are so lucky he decided to make music with it.
Well he is Bi-Polar and he uses his condition to help in writing his music.
To have the confidence to improvise in front of guitarists this great is so impressive. To put those looks on their faces is just incredible.
When Tosin is looking at you like you're an extraterrestrial you know you're different
Devin is so gifted. Amazing playing and vocals.
Literally sounds different from EVERYBODY else lol. Pretty f-ing cool.
Legend has it, that reverb is still ringing
As a guitar player, i can tell you that it'll ring forever when you hit a wrong note! ^^
those 3 last notes omg... dripping sauce
Very 'Close Encounters' sounding
@@ChickenatorJrwas just waiting for that G
The whole run sounded very 'natural selection - ros' especially those last 3 orgasmic notes
@@ChickenatorJr That's totally "Close Encounters" !! Little tribute here :)

That tone is absolutely stunning. But the playing is what really makes it next level.
He's a top 5 vocalist of all time but I think people forget what an absolute beast he is on guitar.
Rock vocalist?

is this some sort of sexual reference. what did he do to your gf?
@@stopstalkingyouspookybastard he elevated her!
Only ever seen him while he was in Strapping. Would love to see his solo stuff live.
His choice of notes. True artest
I think his song "failure" is what is a perfect representation of him musically. Its a masterpiece
These 3 compliment each other so much. Petrucci is a metal whiz, Tosin the mathemetician and Devin is just so on an another emotional plain.

That tone is so nice.
Devin’s playing is so soulful with so much character. I’d listen to him jam before any other ‘shredder’.
Something about this solo that brings a tear to my eye - you can keep your instagram shredders and guitar tricksters, this guy is worth a dozen of them.
"Stuff" is the acceptable term for wat the fuck this godly thing was
Devin is a visionary, period. Love his stuff. The Synchestra / Ziltoid 1 era was his peak to me.
Synchestra was the album that got me into him. Specifically "Triumph".
When you know who says "That's awesome "😮
There you have it, guys. Good guitar playing is not all about speed.
Devin is the kind of guy that has the chops but knows when to back off and stop shreding, and that's why i love him.
I thought he was about to play Close Encounters of the Third Kind riff at the end ! 😆😅🤣...nice
John effing Petrucci: "That's awesome!!"

His signature sound has delay-reverb-delay I believe so you're not wrong either way
I zoned out COMPLETELY between the start and end of this video. Like a whole journey in my mind 😂. Damn that WAS awesome.
Devin is a spiritually advanced human
This is the stuff that truly inspires and keeps me going. It’s so damn good!!!
It’s so difficult to picture Devin as a young lad in the Vai band.. but that record is so classic!
I watched the the whole interview and i was blown away by devin townsend just doing what he does best.

Devin is an underrated guitarist.
Underrated musician and vocalist.
Being invited by Rick beato with petrucci and Abasi does not qualify you as underrated at all
Devin really is a unique diamond.
This is probably the only youtube short that I will let loop over and over
Have you heard Pete Thorn?
Try the isolated jeff beck guitar part from blaze of glory. I listen to it three hundred times today

Hear this a lot. Because he has never been really promoted by a major label and refuses to sell out for his sound.

Love this. For me, feeling and vibes > crazy technique and shredding. This is why his guitar solo in Deep Peace is my favourite solo in any song.

I get to see this guy again for about the 5th time in November! Hopefully get to have a chat with him again also.
I saw him glaring up at Steve Vai while doubling on guitar on the Sex and Religion tour in the early 90s. It was awesome.
It’s nice to watch this on a loop, hearing the shift between minor and major.
