Barbarians are rage monsters able to deflect blows and crush skulls through sheer muscle and fervor. Druids are masters of nature and primeval magics, capable of transforming into beasts. Put them together and you get frothing mad rage bears! Barbarian druids harness the powers of nature and pure anger together to make for some of the most dangerous wild shapes possible. If you’re looking to make a barbarian/druid multi-class, get ready to get mad for nature’s sake as we go through everything you need to know.

Dragonborn breath attacks carry over to wild shape, so fire breathing bear
I’m trying to think if a clever name fir this one. Got any good ideas there?
Bear-becue build, niiice
@@Coyotan bearoasted
@@Coyotan that just sounds like how someone from Minnesota would say it. "Oh yeah, We need some them coals for the Bear-B-Q."
Only if the form is physically capable to do so. Read the rules.
If you're able to get your paws on an Amulet of Health, it can be a great boost to many Wildshape Forms, boosting not only your HP, but also your AC because of the Barb's Unarmored Defense.
Surprised at the lack of love for the Brown Bear. Best combo of AC, HP, and damage potential of all the pre-flight CR1 beasts.
A video devoted to wildshape utility would be dope!
The best race for me personally is an Emerald gem dragonborn because of the psychic resistance and the telepathy allows you to communicate in wildshape and the wings since they are spectral should work on non-flying wildshapes. breath weapons may not be allowed
Another good race option would be Ghostwise Halfling. You don’t care about the Dex bump but if you’re using Tasha’s you can move it. They have telepathy as a racial feature, so it’ll be easier to communicate while Wild Shaped.
This is what I've always wondered as well when it came to racial choices to navigate the lack of communication. I'm in the works on an Emerald Gem Dragonborn Bear Totem Barbarian (possibly +druid) for resistance against psychic and telepathy!
Yep, playing exactly that in a game right now.
You don't really actually gain anything special between 14th an 18th level of druid so if you're going to do a dip 5 levels kinda seems optimal considering all you lose is a proficiency bonus of 1 but gain an additional attack if you take 6 levels of totem warrior that can give you expertise in athletics if you take the tiger totem
@@mikeboyer2128 Wild Shape improvements.
I'm currently playing a Ghostwise Halfling Stars Druid, and even though I haven't used my Wildshape to change into a beast form a lot, when I have done so, Silent Speech has been an excellent feature, especially on a couple of scouting missions with our Rogue. She and I have stealthed our way into and out of two forts to get military information and scouting. As my 4th lvl ASI/feat, I took Telekinetic from Tasha's to bump my Wis from 17 to 18, and I can now boop people in Wildshape, which is a great deal of fun. As a Giant Spider, I've scaled a wall, got to the top, then booped a Goblin guard off the ramparts :)
Kalashtar seems to be the best race for this build because it gains resistance to psychic damage which pairs nicely with the bear totem barbarian subclass that also goes well for this build giving you resistance to all damage. Also Kalashtars can speak telepathically so you can still communicate in wildshape
Emerald dragonborn gain the same benefits + flight once a day and a breath weapon. I'll be flavoring it as a bellowing burb. But I do think that ancestral guardian also brings quite a few good options.
I suppose it depends on how much druid or how much barbarian you want and on wether you want to last the longest or you want your party members to last as long as possible.
And get advantage on all wisdom saves
So you would be 3 levels behind in spell progression. While having low hit chance and doing minimal damage that at best can kill a goblin... When by the time you meet far more stronger and dangerous enemies.
very informative. I like to stick to single class characters because I need to relax a bit during melee, and get confidence in predictable actions, but I think everyone is intrigued by the possibilities of multi-class avatars.
Kind of sad shifter didn't get named.
You can use the shifter ability before wild shaping. Getting a bonus action attack early and the temp hp is really nice.
And if you want to make a werewolf, take beast Barbarian and dire wolf for your wild shape. As early as 5th overall levels combined, you have the option to attack twice with claws, a bonus bite from long tooth shifter, and you can use the dire wolf bite as an opportunity attack to potentially force someone prone. This'll get even more viable once the Monsters of the Multiverse update to shifters lands in a few days.
I realise the appeal of a wildshape druid barbarian but I would like to make an argument for the spores druid as it's wildshape ability does give you temp HP which I believe is affected by rage as well as giving you more ways to do damage (specifically necrotic), it also gives you the animate dead spell which is a good use of your spell slots imo since you're not really going to be using a lot of spell slots due to rage. You can also go for a bit more levels in barbarian to get extra attack for a bit more damage.
One feat to discuss with your DM is Tough. Check with them if they rule that the feat works while wild shaped.
Other honorable mentions are crusher/piercer/slasher. Consider your dire wolf who knocks targets prone or gets pack tactics that gets an additional damage die when it crits. As well as being able to re-roll one of it's damage 2d6 dice per turn. These will "funnel" you towards certain shapes based on their matching damage type.
Ah. The Rage Beast build! My player's Rogue-Druid has an adoptive brother who is a Barb-Druid too. If he ever get's killed, I wouldnt be surprised if the brother becomes his new PC
5 levels In barbarian not only gets you extra attack, but also +10 movement
That’s all movement. Fly, walking, climbing, burrowing, all movement
So never a dead level, and a number of good shapes mentioned do benefit from the Extra Attack like the Giant Elk, Quetzalcoatlus, Giant Snapping Turtle.
@@ye4thorn You need to have 8 levels in druid to get Quetzalcoatlus.... That means you would be total level 13.
Pure druid at level 13 could cast 7th level spells.
Such as Draconic Transformation. Which alone does more damage than Quetzalcoutlus.
Firestorm
Regnerate
Whirlwind
And many others...
The opportunity cost is much higher than the value you would get from extra attack.
Love this brother! I'm working on creating a Barbarian Moon Druid myself! I find them to be so colorful and filled with options. I'm particularly having a blast with finding all the miniatures to Wild Shape into haha.
I have found that Totem of the Bear Barbarians are the way to go with this build as you fulfill your greatest purpose as that DMG sponge!
Other then that you can always forgo your rage as you see fit to concentrate on a moon beam and then grapple your foe as a bear ( If DM Allows) and hold them in it when ever you want!
So many options with this build...Not to mention all the utility and sneaky scouting you can do with all those odd Wild Shapes ;)
Thanks for the amazing video keep them coming!
Daniel
I'd love to see a wild shape video!
I did once do this combo, with a couple tweaks. I was a firbolg, and my dm allowed me to use the invisibility ability, which was great. I also threw in two levels of fighter for action surge, and that proved effective. Unfortunately most of the party, myself included, died in one combat. We chained several combats, without the ability to get a rest in, so we were running on empty by the time we ran into a slaad
Nice video. My first time playing a druid is coming up, and this has given me something to think about. Thanks!
I've only ever multiclassed once, as a warlock druid. I was focusing more on spells, so I went circle of the land, and then archfey pact of the chain. It wasn't the most optimized character ever, but I had a ton of fun playing, and that's what matters most.
I'm playing an artificer now and strongly considered multiclassing wizard, but learned how high a level we were likely to get in our campaign (around 12) and decided that I wanted the later artificer features more than I wanted the low level wizard stuff. If we had been going farther, I would have taken two levels in wizard.
Here's an interesting idea for a Circle Of Spores Druid/Barbarian 3 level dip. Tortle Spore Druid 2 levels. Then 3 Barbarian for either totem 🐻 Barbarian, for resistance to everything except psychic damage. OR. Beast Barbarian related to Druid of course. So that way you can get claws a bite attack which makes you a Snapping Tortle. And the tail can be used to help boost your AC.
I've played a dwarven Ragebear and, man, fella was FUN to play xD
"I'm not stupid, I'm insane!" *turns into a shark, bites enemy's nose off, turns back to dwarf*
Reactor 4 bear?
3 level barb dip also gets the extra Rage per LR.
I built a barbarian/druid. I'm lvl 5 so far. I doing the same thing you said. I'm planning on dropping 6 lvls into barbarian path of the beast and 14 lvls in druid circle of the Moon.
15:09 - Wildshape forms to use
put levels in monk to use ki skills as a bear
Love this video! I am currently playing a barBEARian/druid and there might be a couple of import points maybe left out. First, I think it’s important to mention the brown bear for a 2nd level option druid option. That multi attack right at 2nd level is huge. Second, starting barbbarian gives prof in CON saves to concentrate on utility spells while shifted. Lastly, the alert feet might be just so powerful with this build since winning initiative is almost like gaining an extra turn in combat and allows you to rage before the enemy has a chance to hit. Thanks again for such an awesome vid!
Hey this pretty much the build I was thinking. A Goliath that mostly goes bear mode
I have one multiclass character I have played: a Goliath 8 Ancestral Guardian Barbarian/6 Rune Knight Fighter. He is without a doubt the most powerful DPS character I have built, but also a great tank character as well with the combination of his runes and spirit shielding abilities
Favorite combo--flavor wise.
Need a video on best 3rd party wildshapes from tome of beasts 1 and 2
I've just started playing a bugbear coastal druid 4 storm herald barbarian 3 when making a new character for our lvl7-8 party. He shapeshifts only into the "strongest" possible animal he perceives for each weight category (Saltmarsh seal lion, and a hercules beetle this far). He is super fun to role play and the mental image of a lightning-storm-generating huge raging walrus is just too much. Also, sneak to your opponent's shoulder as a Hercules beetle and slam their throat with bugbear's surprise round extra damage - it's all very silly.
Druid and barb make for hilarious themed characters.
Coastal druid is of course a hard sell, but thematically it works wonders. Additionally, as we require quite a bit of setup anyways, our bugbear having good stealth stats give us time to prep Coastal signature spells like Mirror Image, which works with rage and wild shape.
Surely you can just stock out-of-combat spells or buff spells and healing spells that you can use before and after combat respectively? Not amazing for a combat-focused build like most builds are but I think they still have some use!
Do the druid wild shape video please sir
Got a barb Goliath with a pet bear and the only reason I’m multi classing as a Druid is to do best wrestling lmao
Perfect timing!
I was just making a Bear Totem Barbarian with an Emerald Gem Dragonborn for the extra psychic resistance, and telepathy within 30ft...
Thanks for the great content!
Or a Satyr... Hmmmm
I mean a bear that has dragon breath? Yes please
One of the shifter subrace abilities keeps opponents from attacking you with advantage which means you can reckless attack truly recklessly
Plus its great thematically with the beast barbarian
What’s the race name?
@@DUES_EXWild hunt shifter. 😜
A fun tactic for wildshape is too rest in wildshape to get your wildshape charges back. At later levels you can turn to an Elemental and then turn into another elemental straight away. Assuming you rested in that first elemental wildshape.
I have a Shifter that I originally just planned to be a plain barbarian but with her story shenanigans being able to take the lycanthropy vibes even further just sounds sick. Plus being able to shift halfway through combat just seems like an epic “I’m taking this shit serious now” moment. Also thinking about a giant constrictor snake or saber tooth tiger growing quills after shifting is even cooler to me (she’s a Beasthide Shifter but she’s a made up animal that has a ton of quills, thus the quills)
DEFINITELY interested in a video on wild shape
4 levels in totem barbarian and rest in moon druid is the way to go.
It is probably a bad idea to avoid ASI’s altogether because you can only use two Wild Shapes per rest.
I want the wild shape video 💪😎
Telepathy Feat overcomes communication issue.
Great idea!
I think Satyr doesn’t really work with the bear totem build. Maybe an Elk Totem Barbarian Druid? Since they get RAM + Mirthful Leaps.
Ah yes, the Ragnar the BarBEARian build. Shout outs to all my fellow One Piece D&D fans.
The druid in the campaign I am currently in just took a dip into barbarian at lvl 7. He is a moon druid, of course lol, but he has pretty much had the same couple of moves all game. He summons a creature or creatures, then wildshapes and goes to town. This is his first ever campaign in any ttrpg so he sometimes gets excited without understanding how things work or will hear someone say something is cool without really understanding how or why and wants to try it. I didn't realize that he had not looked into his multiclass further than someone told him it was really strong, so when he summoned his polar bear, then tried to rage and wildshape, I felt really bad when I informed him that he couldn't cast nor hold concentration while raging. We were mid battle so since I am not the DM I couldn't stop play to explain all the things he could do and handle now to balance what he could not. The DM did at least let him redo his turn so that he wasn't wasting his summon, since he really didn't know, but because things were not explained to him correctly he chose to not rage and just attacked with his summon and himself as a second polar bear, non raged. I am trying to get with him this weekend and either send him a link to this video at least, or go over some of the mechanics with him.
multiclassing as druid is more harmful than actually good. I know your comment is year late. But none of these videos address the opportunity cost. Pure druids get so much more than than multiclassing ones. If both druids would exists in game the barbarian druid would feel like that he is useless.
On unarmored defence 4:06: "The unarmored defence feature can still be used in wildshape it just uses the beasts physical scores instead, this means that with some wild shapes you will be improving their AC while using unarmored defence and with some you are better off using their exist AC"
If I understand that correctly, with some wildshape transforms the creatures base armor class works out to higher than what the unarmored defence ends up being? I assume the higher value will be used though right? To me this just means we should focus on transforms that combo well with unarmored defence.
I made a ghostwise halfling path of the totem barbarian/druid of the moon to be able to speak with telepathy
I'm considering this multi-class for an upcoming campaign. Deciding between a Ghostwise halfling, for luck and telepathy or Tortle.
By your own definition Wildhunt Shifter would qualify for wildshape, as it has nothing to do with physical attributes. Inability to make attacks against you with adv. would be rather valuable to a raging reckless attacking wildshaped Barbarian-Druid, I would think.
DMs everywhere feel your pain.
What do you think about doing 15 Druid/3 Barb/2 Paladin?
I wonder if itd be better to do that for the smite damage or do 15 Druid/5 Barb for the extra attack
Subbing now. Just started watching about 2 weeks ago. Anyhow, I am going to play a beast barbarian, and for story/RP reasons I may go 14 barbarian/6 moon. I don’t need to optimize at this table, and as I’m leaning into were creature territory, that combo has a lot to offer!
Thanks! Yea, that's a great idea given the rest of the combo. What are you going to name them?
@@SkullSplitter no name yet!
I think I decided to go full barb. The idea of multi classing came up because I wanted the primal savagery spell. I’ll try not to be long winded! I was going to go full lycan/shape changer and play a shifter moon/beast. But in this setting especially, innistrad, lycans are hunted. So I can’t go around raging all the time. Which is good because it could get redundant playing from levels 3-20! Without getting into all the mechanical decisions I was looking at, I can use primal savagery to help out when not raging, but also hint towards the beast within. I think I’ll just go magic initiate! Though, the moon/beast would have been fun! A giant elk with a tail… 😂
I'm currently working a variant human quarter ork (half orc look without racial abilities) barb1 druid initiate + 3 shepherd druid levels... I'm leaning into support druid with an angry streak... I dipped initiate for Shillelagh and Thorn Whip plus good berries to represent the druid at 1st lvl barbarian. This gives me wis attack if I need the HIT and rage STR if it needs to hurt more. With 3 lvls druid, I usually area control and support then rage shape into an elk or panther or additional fun if they have it pinned and need the extra muscle... I plan on getting 2 more barb when it is convenient and going path of the beast but plan of being the support control mostly. Most efficient build - no... But it fits my tribal shame idea well.
What will you name them?
@@SkullSplitter he's been played for about 3 months so far - name is Dru.... Not particularly creative, but he's the runt of a half orc clan, so it's better than "Yo, runt"!
=)
I am about to make a Barbarian/Druid build for a PvP session. Thanx for the advice. My enemies will be cursing your name. Mwahahahahaaaa (HOOOOOOOOWL)
Is it stupid to wanna get barbarian at level 14 get the bear totem level 3 & eagle at 14 & get druid to level up just for the ability to change into a bear & make a flying raged out bear?
I made a beasthide shifter barbarian druid. Getting even tankier won't hurt any front line fighter
Interesting. What was your favorite part about this build?
Well, where to start? Lol. it flavourfully makes a lot of sense, a shifter turning into bestial animals. Plus, I'm an aspiring voice actor, so getting to voice each of the animals is a definite plus (and I made sure, my party enjoys it as much as I do.) And, raging as a wildshaped beast is definitely tanky and badass, and in significantly more dangerous battles, getting to add an extra bit of ac and temp health is DEFINITELY useful. In character it was displayed as the beast getting more feral and monsterous. Their hide getting thicker and their eyes glowing green. I got to play it to 13th level and the build as a whole (3 bear totem warrior, 10 moon druid) and it's my favourite character I've played, hands down.
Okay so a couple of things and I know I am going to be "That Guy". Deinonychus is what Velociraptor was based off of as Velociraptor was about the side of a dog. Crocodilians and dinosaurs are very distantly related. Yes birds evolved from theropods but Crocs and their lineage is much, much older than dinosaurs.
Deinonychus is a waaay "bigger" raptor, Jurassic Park's franchise velociraptors are actually deinonychus
Oh I want to run mostly barb 3 levels barb 2 moon druid but run mostly barb ending in like 12b 8d
Take a small Gnome Build and focus on getting smaller builds not bigger builds,Druid/Rogue (Infiltrator/Spy), Get minuscule, become a tiny Spider or Mosquito and go through getting the teams needed castle layout or fight with advantage because you are so small, enemy has disadvantage (ever swat at a pesky fly)?
Everyone remember the scooby Doo point
For the level 2 druid is there a reason Brown Bear didnt make the list?
Question does the unarmored defence add to the natural defence of the form you are taking ie, Unar=10+dex+con+natural armour rating meaning if you take bear form you're getting an armour rating of 24. (10+3+11) or is it just take either their natural armour or the unarmored pull mods?
What if you threw being a werewolf into the mix?
If you take long tooth shifter and go beast Barbarian you can be a werewolf pretty easily. If timed well, you can potentially attack three times a turn between between claws and the bonus action bite. The dire wolf's bite can be used for opportunity attacks that might knock fleeing targets prone too.
Tried this build with a dinosaur varient of this druid multiclass but the unarmed defense was essentially useless. Lovely build but unarmored defense apparently doesnt work in wild shape and you'd have to rage before you wildshape. The only thing being used in wildshape is reckless.
Actually, you can use those options wildshaped. The PHB explicitly says you do not lose class features in your Wild Shape, so you can still use Unarmored Defense and Rage while Wildshaped. Jeremy Crawford also seems to have confirmed this
What do you think about a Dhampir. Bloodsucking Rage Bear or Spider.
Cant believe you skipped on the shifter for race choices. Especially the wildhunt and their ability to make it so you cant make attacks with advantage against them
Can you do a gloomstalker/twilight multiclass?
Can we get a swashbuckler ranger mix
Can a Barbarian Druid wear metal armor and cast for example a spell like lightning lure before or after having been in wild shape? Or is a Barbarian Druid combination limited to just use wild shape and benefit from the Barbarian rage (which is cool, but it would to be nice to also be able to choose spells before/ after/ instead of wild shape)?
Under the description in druid: "druids will not wear armor or use shields made of metal"; however, you can cast spells before using wild shape. You can wear non-metal armor & use wooden shields. When you wild shape, you choose to drop the items/armor/weapons, have them merge into your form, or if the beast form can use the item, continue using it (for example a ring can be used on an animal with hands, cloaks usually work, as well as headbands).
If you are a moon druid, your wild shape is a bonus action, so you can cast a spell & then wild shape after (instant spells & spells that last for a duration without concentration are your best options). If a spell has a flat duration & no concentration (such as longstrider), the spell will last during your wild shape rage. So you do have some options. Keep in mind your action types & what spells use which ones.
4th Barb/8th Druid/4th Rogue. Path of the beast/Moon/Assassin Dhamphir. (All stats 13s.) [[ Alert, Observant, Telepathy. One stat bump to Con +2 (for the bites)]] JUST PLAIN FUN to watch DM cringe everytime combat starts to see what wacky stunt I'd pull off and see his face every time his hidden threats got ruined utterly. To his credit he did allow a Silverback Gorilla with huge tail or claws as a very cool custom bit of flavor😂
Curious on feat choices
I made this but with tortle race a two headed turtle that rage and shape shift 😂
Hello, good videos, how can I make a D&D character like Kiora from MTG 🐳🐬🐋🐙
One single level dip into Monk is a far superior unarmored defense: maxing Wisdom boosts your defense far more reliably. There are also other ways to get resistance to damage types.
This leaves you free to cast and concentrate on spells, adding to the value of a Monk dip rather than barbarian.
I prefer Kalashtar Human for psychic resistance and a free telepathy feature with which to communicate when in Wildshape.
If I dip barbarian, I go bear totem especially if it is only 3 levels, to get resistance to all but psychic (which I got from my race).
I went for a human Barbarian/druid that dual wields daggers, looking forward to getting Wolfheart and being able to wild shape to that of a wolf for extra Awwooooo flavor!!! UwU
Deinonychus are actually larger than Velociraptors, but smaller than UtahRaptors and the Raptors from Jurassic Park (which are more like UtahRaptors). Useless info, but now you know.
Deinonychus are the Velociraptors from the Jurassic Park movies. Real Velociraptors, including the ones in D&D, are their smaller cousins and the size of turkeys.
Beast barbarian 6 / spore druid 14
while barbarian 3 is really good barbarian 2 may be better with moon druid as the CR is maxed at 18th level
My DM allowed for dwarf-gigant hybrid
Giant with wildfire on a bugbear or a halfling that cant roll 1s.
bro, you could pass for Micheal Shannon's son.
I’m not going to lie I’m listening but the main reason I’m watching this video is to stare at your glorious facial hair
How to play a Barbarian/Druid Multiclass - don't! You will outclass everyone else during the lower levels and make the game less fun for the other players.
Barbarian druid combo is actually very bad multiclass. Let's be real... if you're going to get barbarian levels you probably going to get 3 for subclass. This means you would be 3 levels behind in spell progression. Not just that but even without barbarian druid's animal forms easily last over most battles. Basically getting resistance would just be "win more".
This "win more" isn't without cost. Which are following:
1. Progression in better animal/elemental shapes.
2. Can't concentrate on spells.
3. Less feats
4. Behind in spell progression.
So why are these a problem?
Druid can easily access damage resistances on their own with further levels. However what is worst is that your damage and hit rate will be very low. To the point that you're not even a threat during encounter. Meaning... You're just sponge that everyone will ignore and kill last. With being moon druid without barbarian, you can cast powerful control and damage spells while having more powerful forms.
