@@goldenboy140 I think that blueballs guy is rank 69
The most impressive thing to me, is that iceland has 9 gramdmasters. A country with about 350.000 inhabitants ( with a lot of time on their hands)
Thats probably becouse of Boby Fisher
Another random fun fact - In just under half of every World's Strongest Man events, an Icelandic powerlifter has finished in the top 3. 21 medals in 44 events.
A nation of brains and braun!
Despite having only 350k population they could play with each other that's nice :)
At short sample sizes, extremities are lot more common. They don't mean much though.
This is because at large sizes, they tend to average out, leading to a more stable and true-r number. At short sizes, there simply haven't been as many cases for averaging out to begin.
Since Iceland's population isn't even half a million so the 1 per 40k GM number doesn't really mean anything.
If this seems hard to understand, an example will help. Consider Anna Cramling's house. In a family of 3, they have 2 GMs. 2/3 GM rate!!!!!!
Does that 0.66 mean anything? No. So doesn't Iceland's 0.0002.
Now, I'm not saying it's purely a sample size issue, maybe Iceland does have a stronger chess culture (like US vs Russia) but that alone doesn't explain the seemingly extraordinary GM rate
What does "alot of time in their hands" mean?
India's growth has been massive. I'm surprised even china failed to surpass. From zero GM in 1987 to 68 GMs in 2021. Amazing! This is real chess boom. The numbers will further skyrocket in next 5 years, many IMs are on the verge of becoming GM.
To think there was a time when Bangladesh had more GMs than India. For one year, but there was.
Lok at the Poland, country 50times smaller than India.
China doesn't care about chess because it has its own Chinese chess and Go/Weiqi.
@@Glicerol size doesn't matter. neither does population. Poland was a part of Soviet, which had a rich chess backing and exposure from govt since the very beginning. That is what makes all the difference in all former Soviet countries. Chess in India was/is played for recreation and fun in general, taking it professionally came about after 80's. After being ravaged by British colonialism and partition India had other much important things to sort out. Professional chess wasn't a priority for the govt back then. Hence the change was late.

it's crazy to see how many gms germany has but is lacking in top players
I think that is because Germans love their structure. Basically doing everything by the rulebook. This will bring you to a high standard pretty fast but suppresses that spark of genius that it takes to be the best.
I think that even shines through in our nation's favourite sport football. We produce solid players but German football is often seen as boring and we do not produce the kind flashy genius players like Ronaldo, Neymar or Messi.
The biggest exception to this are probably driving sports where we had two exceptional talents with Michael Schumacher and Walter Röhrl.
But it also could just be that this is my own subjective perception that is easily proven wrong by some facts.
@@kliffi96 Don't forget Sebastian Vettel.
@@kliffi96 Dude this is a fucking stereotype😄 not all Germanys are the same, i am German myself. I think the lack in Elite players is more likely because chess isn't very hyped in Germany. We never had some kind of morphy or fischer

It's super hard and generally unattainable to play soccer, basketball, baseball, etc. In a league A, National sports team.
@@trainerred6582 true, but the weird logic is that in usual sports it is almost impossible to get to the highest level at a very young age. But we are hearing about these 12 year olds becoming grand masters. And being a GM doesn’t even make you a professional. So I figured that there would be way more GM’s then there would be professional athletes at any given sport (but there isn’t) ,
Example: there are 87 million tennis players world wide and 3,873 professionals
But there are 800,000 chess players but only about 1,721 GM’s (which again doesn’t even make you professional)
@@cptazstudios7952 Ah! I understand what you mean. That's why they had to make an unofficial, Super GM title since there is a gap between say, GM Ben FineGold and GM Wesley So. Super GM is where you would expect to be making significant $$ to be able to live as a professional.
In that case, there should be more GMs since there's still the Super GM position with less than 40 players alive in the world (correct me if there's more or less)
@@cptazstudios7952 Another thing I remember now is that before in The U.S. it was legal to draft college or even high school students to the NBA to play basketball. American football players also can't get contracts to join the NFL...even if they can already beat NFL players.

Armenian SSR produced a world champion, and in recent times, Aronian has been ranked as high as #2. The question though: was chess always a part of Armenia's culture, or was this something started during the USSR, as I read that the Communist Party of the Soviet Union promoted chess to stimulate the minds of the peasants, and that chess is now part of the culture of every post-Soviet Republic?

0:53 what the hell is Glasnost? Clearly something went wrong here :) Great vid anyway
Glasnost was a Soviet policy of open discussion of political and social issues. It was instituted by Mikhail Gorbachev in the late 1980s and began the democratization of the Soviet Union. Ultimately, fundamental changes to the political structure of the Soviet Union occurred: the power of the Communist Party was reduced, and multicandidate elections took place. Glasnost also permitted criticism of government officials and allowed the media freer dissemination of news and information.
