Dickey Betts, a pivotal figure in the Allman Brothers Band that pioneered Southern rock and impacted the jam band scene, passed away Thursday at his residence in Florida, as reported by his longtime manager David Spero.
Commentary at the end of the video.
It says it was before he passed. All interviews are done before death! Rest well Dickey Betts.
. Thought so..
A few years ago on this one?
I had a funny feeling ( as well ), that this was recorded before his death!
@@SAVANNAHEVENTSYes. I saw this years ago.
would have been pretty damn boring if it was after his death
in october 2003, i suffered a massive stroke. responding to a message from my son scott, dickie forwarded to me a box filled with great southern cd's, autographed picture encouraging a speedy recovery, and a cd that included a studio show in long island, featuring the marshall tucker band, 6 numbers from dickey, including jessica and dickies rendition of b.b. kings, the thrill is gone. thank you mr. betts. rest in peace. bill dailey
Blue Skies forever Dicky.Thank you for the fine music you created through the years in the best genre of Southern rock.♥️✌️🇨🇦🇺🇸
I hope you are coming along well Sir… ☮️💙🙏🏼
Wow! What a blessing and what a wonderful thing for him to do! 👍❤️
This is difficult for me as my father just had 3 during the recovery of cancer - "we do get by..." Dickey is up there w all of the rest havin a blast and let his son live on his legacy 👑🌹💀⚡💀🌹👑
Prayers
When all these greats from the 60 70 80 are gone, man will there be an empty whole in rock and roll they just can't be replaced
Warren and TTB will pick up the slack.
Widespread and the young gun Daniel Danato..
I have faith.

Yes, Let's not forget The Allman Betts Band. Tedeschi Trucks Band...and others. All we have to do is listen.
The boys will bring it home.
Never be replaced...I was just thinking about that yesterday
Sadly no one will care becouse the people that do will be dead too
With Dickey passing away the main core of The Allman Brothers are now all reunited in heaven, I hope. RIP Mr. Betts and thanks for the music.
Jaimoe is still alive, brother

Thank you. I read that and thought the same thing! Let's not forget Jaimo.
May the road go on forever.
@@michaelguccione6865 ...and he's core! God bless!
Lol😅 ....newsflash...you have to actually know Jesus to have your name in the book of life....and go to Heaven...
None of the Allman Brothers or band members gave Jesus even a second of consideration ...
Be for real 😅
@@KevinMcGrath-777 only too much of that kind of judging it was quite a bit of evolving with Gregg, as he has written about. We'll all eventually get there. Last thing he said to a lot of us was "good night and God bless you."
One of the finest pickers ever went home this morning. Ride Easy Brother Betts.
yes indeed one of the greatest guitar pickers ever - !
@@joenania no doubt about it!
like all y'all I came back to this video tonight in remembrance. Glad yall here. Just think - Allman Brothers - Live at the Fillmore East - that album (we used to crank in high school skippin class, in the car), sounds just as good IF NOT BETTER than it did in 1976. Statesborough Blues, and I Musta Did Somebody Wrong.
Yes, Dickey Betts was one of the finest acoustic guitar pickers of all time!! So sad that he passed!!! He was one of the original members and started the Alllman Bros band with Gregg and Duane!!! Love this video of Dickey!! Love the Allman and Betts music for many years and always will, please check out Gregg and Dickey with others playing a live version of Sweet Melissa on UA-cam!!! Dickey’s up in Heaven playing guitar and having a glorious concert with Gregg, Duane and many other rockers…GOD Speed Dickey!!! 🙏🕊️🎶💙
A Legend
To my eyes , Mr Betts looked like a guy in his late 50's in this video ,rather than someone in his late 70's or 80 years old ! He was a rather special ,gifted , talented musician ,wasn't he ? His mind must have been like a computer to have made music look as easy as he did ? RIP ,you are immortal now . Condolences from Scotland.
This is an old video regardless of the title
Fair spoken. Scottish!
He was definitely a highly-intelligent man!
He was 80 most of us can hope to live that long. You’d never know it though.
He was one of the very best pioneers of southern rock and a truly great guitarist. I'll always love the Allman bros and great southern, the music lives on forever. Rest in peace Dickey Betts!
Look up his first recorded vid he made at home.
He went from writing hillbilly music to “ Ramblin Man and Jessica”!
Wow!
Amen ❤. He was DEFINITELY A PIONEER. Super talented man 😅
The Allman Brothers are gone, long live The Allman Brothers.
They're not gone as long as we keep remembering...and listening!
@@bluesdriver6354 They're gone, but they'll NEVER be forgotten‼️
Still have Jaimoe.

I only saw him once, with the Allmans, the night I graduated from high school in 1973. Brothers and Sister tour, memorable night!. Dickey saved that band after the loss of Duane.
Wow ! Pretty much at their peak ( w o Duane of course) ....
Nah, the Almond Brothers were at their Best from 75 to 77-78.@steveb.4809
Ditto.
Where did you see him at I saw him at Roosevelt stadium in Jersey City
@steveb.4809 that's the first time I saw the Brothers too in Chicago, '73. I think at the Stadium? My older friends that saw the original band with Duane were like what's the point? Figured Duane Allman was the heart and soul, plus Oakley was gone as well? Couldn't have been further from the truth, that concert kicked some serious a$$! Actually in hindsight, kudos to Dickee Betts during that period 👏 Because he really worked hard onstage filling in both guitar parts! Just amazing, 🙏 RIP DICKEE BETTS!
It was the '70s, I was in Navy and barreling down the mountains of Pennsylvania in my '69 Barracuda on my way home to Chicago on leave. Blue Skies was on the tape deck, and of course, I hit the gas with such a great traveling song. It was a wonderful time to be young and free. Thanks so much Mr. Betts!
I'm so jealous! I can just imagine everything you just said! God I wish I wasn't born in 1993 I wish I was born back then so I could have experience the late 60s and all of the 70s and 80s! I can just imagine it and how it was back then it sounds so much like a dream come true to have lived in that time as a young adult!
Thank you for serving..
RIP Dickey Betts. "If you don't do anything something's bound to happen", coolest quote I've seen, have to remember that.
Ain't that the truth. When he said that I laughed... what a line. Fantastic guitarist.
Good one. Little did he know I believe he writes songs when he talks. Amazing. Like quote : ' writing is the freaking hardest thing to explain ' and if I'm writing I don t want it to sound like I'm trying. Great legacy. Play on .
@@swaynno Interesting! Would have been great to talk to Dickey Betts.
Southern boys at their best!
Mr Betts threw a shirt from the stage that i caught. Later when i got home..i saw it was signed. Many great times seeing the Allmans. RIP Dickey!
That's cool. I was fortunate to be in front row Great Southern concert, he lean over and sign my Duane Allman shirt I was wearing. Dicky is one of the best.
He will be remembered
😢Y'all said RIP Mr Betts.. I'm unaware of his passing... He's finally jamming 🎸 🎸 with SkyDog again, and all his Bros.. Greatest band Ever
Very Cool......& a memory u can cherish forever!
And another piece of our musical history has passed reminding all of us that Father Time waits for all of us.
Rest in Peace Mr Betts. Many of us. Rocked with your music and did so more than once. The class of 2024 has claimed many of our best to include my friend Jeff Beck and David Crosby who I saw with ÇSNY so know the band is waiting and the music there will be incredible.
Rock is waiting. Lastly thank you for the hours ol music and do not forget your friends Duane
and Greg are waiting.
I MET HIM...HE WAS NO JOKE...TUFF AS NAILS...LOTS OF RESPECT ...
I bet you had to be tough to be in the band. These guys worked hard and probably played even harder. Much respect.
Is this Biden? No Joke man!
Dickey Betts is thee guitarist that influenced my style of playing more than any other guitar player. I was devastated to hear of his passing. I never miss a Duane Betts show in SoFla. When I am alone I always play Blue Sky and Jessica on my guitar, and when I learned and perfected it, I had tears in my eyes, as I do now. Ramble on Rambling man. And Rest in Peace.

If you believe in the afterlife, me I don't I believe in evolution!
@@robertsteeno6106
The afterlife does exist, yes.
Often because I come to see my siblings in dreams.
It's very strange, and there are distant relatives I've never met.
But I don't believe there is a place called heaven or hell.
I don't believe in evolution, because Darwin himself said that evolution doesn't apply to humans.
Theory-an unproved assumption. Like the “theory of evolution”.
"By the time you get good you're sick of it" Many true words spoken in music and words in your career. Rest in peace
This one hits especially hard. Dickey showed everyone how two guitars playing extended melodic lines could create beauty, passion, and with more than a streak of blues. Even Les Paul was taken with Dickey's musicality and technique.
A one of a kind guitarist. Dickey outdid almost everyone with his expressive, melancholic musicality. With his aways impressive improvisational style, he was more than a master of the instrument. For my generation, he wasn't a guitar god, together with Duane, they were God.
Jam on Mr. Betts and thank you, a true Allman brother to the end.
Time for shots and listening to Live at Fillmore East!
Dickey betts and duane allman playing together was just pure magic two of the greats!!!! R.i.p brother thanks for all thr great music!!!!!!!
RIP Dickey. Thanks for the Great Allman Brothers music memories!
The greatest Guitar Duo ever is reunited.......................................................Thank you so much Dickey. RIP
This man was too good of a player if that's possible. He will never be forgotten. I will see you in the next world sir.
He and his original bandmates meant the world to me when I was growing up in the 1970's. I believe all of those men are passed now except maybe drummer Jaimo? RIP, the great Dickie Betts.
And Warren Haynes .
@@Craigkimmelwas not original
Yes Sandy to be totally honest , There was no actual original band. It was created by Duane and Dickie , it was their brainchild to form a band . I did stray from the comment but I felt Warren was important and a very big contributing member as with Butch and needed to be mentioned . When I read Dickie had passed, it truly affected me And reading all the comments along with my own thoughts , my age, and my own mortality sort of put me in a fog , HA HA HA 😂
R.I.P. Dickey you sure made the cowboy hat, jeans & boots look GREAT. Gonna miss the fabulous guitar slinger & singer!

You definitely made your mark on the world Dickey Betts. Thank you for all the music you gave us! 🎶👍❤️🥰🎶 RIP😇
RIP Dickey Betts. 💔
he was pretty good with this Allman Bros. band back in the day of the slidest Duane. There was chemistry. Duane was the force , once he was gone, Dickey should have formed a new band.
RIP. Mr. Betts. I'm happy to say I got to hear you play way back in the 70's and still think about that time ..
Was fortunate enough to see Dickey make a guest appearance with the Marchall Tucker band at the Santa Monica Civic 1974.... The Outlaws were the opener.. One of my favorite concerts ever....
I wish it was a Sunny, cool breezy Saturday back in 1970 with The Allman Brothers up on an outside stage with 50,000 people smoking and drinking and rocking to their amazing music....But Reality sets in and we have lost yet another//Life is great but Death defeats it every time...my stomach hurts, the tears are flowing and I just don't know what I'm gonna do....

@@Craigkimmel Look for IN MEMORY with him and Warren - they really push the hell out of each other -
I saw him many times in the 1990s-2000s. He was a true joy to watch, eyes. Closed in concentration, foot stomping, left arm wrenching Goldies neck getting that beautiful vibrato. One of my all time favorite, thanks for the music, you'll never be forgotten and always loved❤
I remember Dickey being kicked out of the ABB band and always wanted him to be reinstated and it just never happened it always kinda of let down to me as much as I love Warren and Derek and always continued to go see the Allmans no matter what but I am soooo Grateful to have seen Dickey play numerous times with the Allmans he was no doubt a founding father and driving force. The Back Where It All Begins tour was so magical and had a cult following partially due to Jerry's passing but The Allmans were always my band and I miss them Dearly. Thanks Mr Betts!!! Being a guitar player I would always expect him to play that Gold Top Paul but I was surprised to see a Red 335 or a PRS at shows and that was always cool to see him use something different because he used that Gold Top a lot.
You were definitely the best and I saw you fifty one times, the master
Somebody's calling your name.
Somebody's waiting for you.
Love is all that remains the same.
Oh man. Dickey was the best. Saw him at Biddy Mulligans club in Chicago in 1991. Great show. Small club. I was standing right in front of him like 3 feet away. Great memories.
Seen Him Solo in 1988 on Pattern Disruptive Tour with Warren Haynes and Great Opening Band at the Park West . 2 years Later Reunited with Greg Alman and ABB for 7 Turns on the Highway Tour in Tinley Park. Also seen him Greg Alman & Dickey reunited in 1986 at Holiday Star in Merrivlle indiana.
how he made it to 80 is unbelievable. Rest easy, man!

Dickey Betts - Champion and Legend
Saw the Allmans many times back in the day. Fare thee well brother Betts. You were born a ramblin man.
Sad day. One of the most underrated guitar heros. RIP
By who?
@namcat53 exactly. Don’t believe he was underrated at all. Wrote most of ABB hits, his playing influenced countless players 😢 RIP
Underrated because he is rarely mentioned as one of the best guitarists out there. Hie intro to the live version of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed was groundbreaking. This was pre Jeff Beck Blow by Blow.
Underrated? Not in my book…….
It definitely one of the finest guitar players and finest songwriters there ever was.. nobody could Master the way he could write a instrumental. Definitely one of a kind thank you my brother rest in peace
In Memory of Elisabeth Reed.
This man was unique among rock guitarists. While most of the rest were revolving around the Blues and minor pentatonics, Dickey’s influences and writing was influenced by a Country sound and major pentatonics. Absolutely appreciated his unique musical character in his songs. What a great harmonist and counterpoint to Duane and Greg! This man’s contributions were huge. Thank you and RIP Dickey Betts Your sound changed music for the better and you will be greatly missed.
First concert I went to was Allman Brothers and Outlaws 1975 Roanoke Va. saw them I think 4 other times. You were great Dickie, your music will live on
Dickie, I know you will never read this but. RIP that your playing brought a lot of joy to a lot of people form a long time. Your musical legacy will live on for generations to come. Thanks for the memories!

RIP Dickey, another hero rides away!
He played # 1 and 2 of my favorite solos of all time. Blue skies and Jessica. Saw him at guitar greats show at Capitol theatre in 84. Love you, will miss you brother. Thank you so much!
We thank you for all your musical contributions Dickey. Now you are ramblin' up in them blue skies jammin' with Duane, Gregg, Barry, and Butch. What a reunion I know that will be!
Fishing and playing guitar….2 of the best things a man can ever do…I bet Heaven is filled with gorgeous lakes/rivers/creeks, and guitars made from the rarest wood in the universe
Must have seen him 30 times w ABB in the 90s. Another dozen times w his bands. Got his autograph at the TLA in Philly after the breakup in 2000. Thank you Dickey for the soundtrack of my life. Your gift changed my life for the better. You were larger than life. God bless
Bye Dickey, it really is the time to rest. Thank you for the autograph.

What a great guitarist and to be lucky enough to connect with the greatest, Sky Dog. The best slide man to grace the planet gave us some of the best music we will ever get to enjoy!!Say what you will but they set the bar for Southern Rock!! Not to mention the fact that they had the greatest blues singer besides Otis to step in front of a mike😊We are gonna miss you Dicky and that Red Guitar!!!❤
I saw ABB for the first time when I was 14 (my 2nd concert. First was Black Sabbath)...I'm 67, now..I've been to hundreds of shows since..That ABB show is still the best I'd ever attended..Absolutely blew me away!..I was an instant fan..To me, "Elizabeth Reed" is their best song, no disrespect to Gregg and his singing. He was one of a kind voices..RIP, Dickey...Only Jaimoe left..Hard to fathom.
I agree Elizabeth Reed is his finest writing & played beautifully by all. Any interviews on his composing/why, how, what...on this masterpiece?
Saw him with Great Southern and after the show my wife and I went across the street to Dennys and Dickey was sitting with his wife. And I got him go sign my ticket. I had it tucked away all these years so hearing he had passed on I dug it out . Very good. Memory
You make me cry one more time. Thanks for all dear friend.
Everyone I knew in high school and college had the Fillmore album when it was first released and followed them afterwards. Eat a Peach was the big one. Get high and listen to that. Thanks Dickey.
God bless Dickey Betts, his family and all the many many fans he has all over the world. What a legend this man was. In a time when there were some heavy duty bands around, the early to mid 70s, he carried the Allman Brothers Band on his shoulders with his creative songwriting and lyrical singing. Dickey, you've brought so much joy and happiness to millions over these years and now it's your time to rest. Say HI to Duane, Gregg, Berry, and all the rest. Rest easy ramblin man, we'll miss you and will always love you! Sincerely, a fan 😢❤🙏🎶
Dickey is the voice of their biggest hit and a hell of a player.... God bless him
he joined his brothers
The man's a legend & I think he knew we all will listen to anything he would write & any Allman fan knows Liz Reed was the most amazing composition in Rock. Dickey was never a joke he like Duane was the real deal. He's way to modest for being one of the best we have had in blues Rock.
Sure Is & His Writing
What can I add... I saw the Allman Brothers Band live circa 1980 at Shea's Buffalo Theater. My Absolute guitar hero was Dickey Betts. Such that I eventually bought a Gibson Les Paul Historic Gold Top. Over the years I saw Dickey Betts at least 8 times. His melodies will live forever. I heard that years ago he would just show up at a bar called Peg's near Bradenton and play. I had a patient who was a former roadie for the Allman Brothers and he said Dickey was a nice and genuine and generous guy. I would have loved to meet him. The world has lost a virtuoso. Regards to his family. Perhaps I'll meet his son Duane someday. Duane has listened to his father and as he's matured is embodying the skills and determination that will allow him to carry the "torch" forward. RIP Dicky. Your road will go on forever... JR, Dade City & Buffalo NY.
God bless Dicky Betts, one of the best guitarist I've enjoyed listening to .He was called apon to save th e Allman Brother's band after Duane passed. His leadership guided the band thru a terrible time to produce some of the best albums, music of the time. The band is together now playing "Blue Sky" in heavan.Duane,Berry,Gregg,Butch.

I love his live videos,he was such a passionate guitar player who kept his band in check at all times. RIP my friend.
Blue Sky is such a special tune! got to see him play it live, Thanks for the memories!
I saw the Allman Brothers live at Jeppesen Stadium in Houston in 1974 or 1975 when I was in High School. The best ever and no other concert ever matched up to that. All the Allman Brothers songs were top notch, but Dicky Betts wrote In Memory of Elisabeth Reed (and many other songs) and it just kicked ass. Wow, time has flown on by. They defined Southern Rock and were legends in their own time. I wore out 3 Fillmore Albums before I got them on disc.
Duane encouraged his writing...perhaps that's where he & Gregg butted heads 🌠
My best memory of Dickey Betts is when he toured with Gregg Allman with his own band. It was in a small club in Providence Rhode Island called the living room. It was the most crowded place I’ve ever been in my whole life. I was standing right next to the stage and you couldn’t leave that spot or you’d never get back even close Gregg Allman was touring with a blind pianist. Every time this dude took a solo Gregg Allman was fixated. This was also the first time Gregg Allman had gotten his wish he was touring with a full horn section and it sounded fantastic. I saw the same band with Gregg Allman open up for Stevie Ray Vaughan. It was two weeks before Stevie Ray Vaughan died. The Gregg Allman band was better. That was probably the best concert I have ever seen
He's been a hero of mine since I was a kid. Gonna miss him. He'll be playing with Duane, Greg, butchie
Rest easy guitar man. We love you
