      It's all about the rivers...rivers rivers. The Nile floods as well and king Namur / king scorpion is an early bronze age contemporary sumer is a bit older but it's arguable by how much. However the Nile is more stable due to it being fed by the Great lakes as apposed to just the rainfall from the Taurus mountains. Given the ages of history Egyptian farm land hasn't salted up don't know why . But yes it is rivers tigres and Euphrates or the blue and white Nile. I love sumer and Akkad this video is brilliant but let's thank the nameless person who decided to save the library at ninevah. Plus the person who cracked cuniform

    The decipherment of cuneiform (Sanskrit 'wedge form or shaped') is perhaps the greatest, albeit forgotten aspect of this history. The man of whom the honour is owed is George Smith, an assistant of Henry Rawlinson at the British Museum, and not even a scholar. This was the man that pieced together the account of the Flood, and realised 1 piece was missing among the some 26,000 fragments in the museum.
    He was the man that went back to the site, climbed under the rubble to rummage the countless fragments of the library and found the missing fragment of Tablet 11.
    The flood was complete!
    George Smith died in Iraq aged 33 (from memory).

    The Sumerians were beautiful artisans! I’ve seen Queen Puabi’s artifacts at an exhibit in the Penn Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and they really stuck with me. Before you said Puabi’s name, I already felt the footage you were showing looked familiar. That doesn’t happen to me too often with historical societies (and I go to a lot of anthropological museums), really a testament to how strong of an impression seeing their crafts will leave on you!
    I really recommend anyone who is able to, go visit the Penn Museum. The exhibit on Queen Puabi and her people is pretty extensive! The jewelry especially is so ornate and finely smithed, it’s amazing to think how long ago people were already incredibly skilled in making beautiful things.

    Who said-“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
    Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
    Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
    And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
    Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
    Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
    The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
    And on the pedestal, these words appear:
    My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
    Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!

    As a professional Cameraman myself , I congratulate you on the production quality of your programmes. Content is well researched, music is in the background (bed) rather than in the foreground so we can hear every single bit of your narration.
    My only advice certainly no criticism, would be to get a gimbal for the camera for the close ups in museums etc or use a DJI Ronin, RemovuK1 gimbal with 4k camera as it’s very difficult to hold any camera for a while without sticks. Most museums wouldn’t allow us to use sticks due to the H&S but one of those pocket gimbal cameras are around £200 or less I think it would be a great investment.
    Some professional Broadcasters could learn from your example 😎

    It's really interesting to see that Ishtar was his patron goddess because in mythology Ishtar takes the Eanna temple and the city of Uruk from Anu signifying the change of power from a god of an older generation to a new generation goddess. Ishtar's myths definitely reflect Sargon's control of Sumer and his reign only cemented her worship throughout Mesopotamia as ''Queen of Heaven".

    Others here may have more knowledge of this period of time, but I understood that Gilgamesh was an actual historical figure, a king of Uruk sometime during the period of 2800 - 2500 BC, and I think the oldest stories of him were written in Akkadian. It seems he would have been included in an entire history of the Akkadians, so I wondered why he wasn't included, or if I just missed it. There was so much great information here I could have missed it.

    Thanks for a great presentation of interesting history. The Code of Hammurabi was not the oldest legal code (as indicated around 20:00). It dates around 1750 BCE. Code of Urukagina (around 2370 BCE), the Code of Ur-Nammu (around 2050 BCE), the Laws of Eshnunna (About 1930 BCE) are much older, and I believe there are clear trails of influence between them. It also seems Hammurabi's code is relatively regressive compared with some older codes, with a stronger emphasis on punishment where some of the earlier codes like that of Ur-Nammu that emphasised recompense for harm relatively more. The Babylonian law seems more inequitable as well. The Code of Hammurabi is probably remembered more because it is by far the best preserved and hence the code for which we have the most complete accounts today.

    So love this! May have known most of this info, but man! The way you tell it, it is so worth hearing! Love how you highlighted the trade routes with the goods from the various places being used together!

    The Bronze artifact at 34:57 is so clean. The beard is two strand twisted which is why it looks like that and it’s something I wish to achieve!

    This is so interesting. Have you ever thought about entertaining the thought of the biblical side of ancient history. For example the book of Jasher. It tells what Abraham was doing at these times. He dealt with these people. It is an amazing book. I think you would find it very fascinating. Thank you. I love ancient history.

    The list of things we account as sumarian inventions is absolutely epic, we need a doc done on just what they birthed for us modern humans, maths, irrigation, farming, writing, reading, recorded music and cooking. Just all absolutely mind boggling, but the sumarians never got forgotten till after the asirians and babylonians, egypt may of been naighbours to akkad, but egypt was a baby at that point, sumar and akkad was already ancient to the Egyptians. Being on the last days of sumar looking to the beginning, would be longer than us looking back at the first pharos of Egypt.. Mad concept really...
