I'm a professional archivist and historian, originally specialized in the Ancient Near East. You managed to tell the story using solid, established scholarship while also bringing in some of the newer stuff as well without falling off the horse on either side. That is very difficult indeed and it is quite an achievement. This would get the highest marks in any MA program in the US. Very well done.
@@wilddesigns857 It's funny how bigots unwittingly expose themselves in the YT comment section. You are worse than the homophobe who replied "Gay!". Instead of asking "what's wrong with being gay?" or simply "So what?" You take the view that it's a disgusting comment because being gay is disgusting. Of course you don't even know you're a fucking bigot & imo, that is the worst kind of bigot because at least the homophobe has the balls to be an unabashed bigot, he knows he is no good. You people are all obviously younger than 40 years of age. Or even 30. The History Channel, Discovery Channel and TLC hasn't been relevant, informative or of interest or quality since the 1990's. Around 1999-2000 they rapidly grew increasingly more speculative tabloid and sensational and when that didn't work they turned to degenerate reality bullshit TV and popular pseudo-science which is obviously what you kids grew up with. History is indeed wiped out by the victors. You don't even know a world prior to Sep 11 when all you had to do was pass through a metal detector at airports, people would talk face to face and do shit together and you would actually find informative stuff on TV. You've grown up in a world were people are detached not only from each other, but themselves, going through an airport is a hellish control grid tyranny and everything on the webz or TV is lies, propaganda and bullshit! I used to tell people about the new world order back in 1991. They'd laugh and call me crazy. Well... look at it now in retrospective. They've certainly succeeded very well with most of what I read they were gonna do over 30 years ago.
I won't lie, when I clicked on this while baked as fuck I was expecting it to be some Ancient Aliens-style pseudohistory based on the title, but here I am coming back to this video every few weeks. I genuinely think this video is an achievement, especially in the absence of any decent free historical programming and doubly impressive for a one man project, it's reignited my childhood love for ancient history. thanks, man

Well I haven’t even started watching it yet but I came here due to my recommendations, yet I find reading the comments first to be helpful as then I see what I’m getting into hahaha and like a few videos I’ve had show up in my recommend home, most people end up on videos like this due to auto play, good job I turn that off so I only watch and have the history of what I have watched. With that your comment has made me want to give this a good listen to so instead of watching it now at 1am U.K. time I’ll wait until morning and take this in properly. Thank you for your comment for without it I may have missed something here. I’ll check back in the morning 🙏
I cannot believe you did all this on your own. This is on par with professional production. The sound design is so nostalgic, reminiscent of early 2000s documentaries, and the amount of information you put into this is astounding! I'm so glad you didn't give up on this, it's an impressive feat! Keep doing this please, you're a treasure to have around.
The nostalgia and overall flow of the cinematic historical data is on par with the history Channel. I can't stop watching it. The kind of education that we need, no opinion, no bias. Historical education based in factual data. The lack of such bias that unfortunately goes along with all types of knowledge based in fact makes it all the more impressive that an individual created it alone. It's spectacular.
I agree. I’m about to post a bit of data uptop. He may have some work cut out for him yet. I’m glad there’s other people out there with great appreciation. Gives me hope for …the future.

So are these ancient sea peoples the Phoenicians? Or are they a completely different ethnic group. I always though the Phoenicians were the first sea people of the ancient Mediterranean.
@@Sailrjup12nh “Phoenicians” (Φοινικες) is an Ancient Greek designation for the Canaanites that enters into the archaeological record immediately after the Bronze Age collapse. How the “sea peoples” may have assimilated into the region historically termed “Canaan” by the neighboring ancient Egyptians and Hurrians is a matter of debate among modern historians.
This episode is one of my favorite things ever made by any person in any context. I'm a sociology professor and you've inspired me to study the political economy of the late bronze age as a long term project. Thank you.
Bro this is really awesome work, I can’t believe you did this all yourself .. it’s so professional it’s literally better quality than stuff you’d see on history channel
The History Channel, Discovery Channel, etc., should be paying you for the rights to air your documentaries. It’s the least they could do, since they seem to have no interest in producing their own quality content anymore.
No they shouldn’t. In fact they should stay the fuck away as corporations have a tendency of ruining just about anything given enough time. Plus, videos like this prove that you don’t NEED a network like that anymore.
@@NathanCassidy721 Never said he needed them. Actually was stating the opposite. And paying for the rights to air isn’t the same thing as having him produce for them. Channels pay for the rights to air movies all the time, they don’t have creative control of those movies, so they can’t really ruin them.
@@censoreverything8072 Fair enough but I would bet money that it wouldn't stop at trying to buy the rights to broadcast. TV execs tend to want to control than cooperate. But even with your suggestion, which I missed the point on initially admittedly, it's not necessary nor needed. Not that many people watch TV networks outside of sports when you can just pull up Netflix or UA-cam and look for what you want to watch. And even those that do know that most of the best stuff is usually behind subscription streaming services nowadays so there wouldn't be much of a point of putting it on Discovery or History when there are better options, like say Curiosity Stream.
I was actually thinking the same thing the other day!! It would be nice for the history channel to do actual historical content but this 2 hour doc would be over 10, 30 min episodes with ad breaks every 5 min and then a 2 min recap when you get back from break. So yea fuck that
@@francmarcus8433 I kinda agree, but remember that Kings and generals now has an entire team behind it with lots of financial backing from its subs, and History time is a multitide smaller. Your videos are amazing, History Time! I've been studying the peoples of the ancient Mediterranean for several years now, primarily focused on the Etruscans (Tyrrhenians/Rasna/Rasenna) and their origins. I'm in no way a professional, but the Etruscans have fascinated me for over 15 years; so much so that I now have a sizable library dedicated to them. Your videos, especially this one on the Sea Peoples, gives all the various peoples of the area, of unknown or debated origins, their fair share of exposure and consideration. Thank you for all your hard work and may the ancient historians guide you through your journeys.
I can’t believe this is a one man operation. You, sir, are incredible. How I wish I’d had this documentary when I was taking a course on ancient Egypt. The professor spent about two minutes on the Sea Peoples and even in my ignorance, I knew there had to be more! This is one of those mysteries that traverses time and is inescapably fascinating. I enjoyed this opus of yours immensely and will be re-watching several times. This is the absolute best piece of research on this subject I have ever come across. And, the music is perfect.
No actually it isn't much a surprise... History channel is the lowest of the lowest. Literally anything is at least 10x better then history channel, they are a bloody disgrace to historians :D

Two years later and I still find this video extremely useful. This topic is so well-researched in this video that it should be used in university courses. The Nuragic civilization is fascinating and it makes me wonder if there was any influence to the west of Sardinia such as with the Talaiotic culture. Outstanding work.
"Nerdettes were believed to have originated in the southern Iberian peninsula and raided Crete in the 12th century. But for unknown reasons the Nerdettes vanish from the archaeological record shortly afterward."
I'm a camera guy professionally and so don't really have a reason to be here. Doesn't mean I need one! The history of man kind and the things people have revered, the wars fought over resources or beliefs, the diversity of people's origins, and the ideas traded throughout... these things give context and with that a certain objectivity. At least for me. When non historians argue about who's land belongs to them, who's religion is correct, who's ideas are worthy, I like to look back at topics like the one covered in this video for some truth behind the matter. Or at least a step closer to truth than uneducated, radical claims so common in today's world. Bravo, well done, this video was beyond excellent!
I love finding historical documentaries on UA-cam, especially lengthy ones. Most are taken from TV but this, the fact that it's entirely made by you, that's fantastic! Kudos! You've gained a new subscriber!
The quality of your show reminded me what History, Discovery and other channels used to be when they first started. Super professional and interesting work!
Just learned I was of Anatolian origin; I share the same Haplogroup with remnants between 9500 BC - 1200 BC, mainly between Hattusha and Troy. Then I get relatives in Caucasia, south Ukraine, Europe, Iran.. all dated between 800 BC ~ Present. Something drove my paternal lineage out of Anatolia and it started 1200 BC. And this information brought me here. Didn’t know about such a big event in the history.
It's so fun when you're able to find tiny tidbits of information and piece together the puzzle of your ancestry. I traced back my ancestry to see they had come from Germany and had migrated to the US in 1710, which I later found was the German Palatine migration that was caused by war, famine, and severe winters. I had zero family history passed down telling me this, just worked it out by putting the puzzle together. Was super cool to learn. I should take a closer look I my DNA to see if I can find information like you mentioned and what it means.
This documentary alone is such a huge accomplishment and yet you’ve made so many amazing films. You are so incredibly informative and present everything in such a simple and pleasing way. I can’t thank you enough for your work!
Also, this is the only channel I've seen on UA-cam that has the talent to make the still image of an ancient map be compelling and engaging, bravo. Not only can you teach, but you can also entertain.
Astonishing stuff, and can’t believe how you just churn this stuff out. As a history graduate and major history freak myself I’m in awe of your work. Wow, your way of telling this story while presenting the solid evidence for everything that you covered is absolutely incredible. Just fucking superb! I used to teach history in university and I'm still writing an historical novel set at the time of the fall of the Hittites. I've read all sorts of research essays, entire texts, and seen numbers of videos on here, but somehow you've managed to capture in two hours the scope of all the major schools of thought. Very, very impressive! So glad you didn't reject the western Mediterranean story or the likely involvement of Mycenaean Greece, like so many do (on the assumption sea peoples must all be local). You've revved up my engines and there's not much I can argue with you about since you've presented such a balanced set of possibilities. I might add that I don't think Julian Jaynes was crazy - there possibly was a major change in consciousness at this time. Drought leads to uprisings of the common people, but attacking royalty and the aristocracy is to deny the gods (whose existence supported the hierarchy). After that there would be nothing left but survival for one's own sake. Love the idea that Enkomi was a staging point for the Sea Peoples. Thanks so much!!
@@dgpgllcofficial6168 The Bible hardly touches on the Hittites. A few references. Their history runs a lot deeper than those few chapters that might mention the Hittites.
@@dgpgllcofficial6168 I have read the Bible, cover to cover, as an adult. I grew up in a fundamental Christian home, spent 8 years in a Christian school, studies catechism in a a Protestant church for 5 years and we had Bible readings after every evening meal, while I was growing up. As for the Hittites, the word "Hittite" is mentioned 25 times in the Bible in 8 books. 10 of those reference Uriah the Hittite, who was the husband of Bathsheba and who King David had arranged to die in battle. That's not a lot of information on who the Hittites were, where they came from, what their religion was, how powerful they were, how they lived, how many of them there were and on and on. There isn't even any mention of where their home kingdom was. So don't try to tell me that all that there is to be known about the Hittites is in the Bible. That's just not true.
This is beyond what History Channel is capable of producing. With the History Channel doing this you would end up with the narrator asking surprising questions to every ridiculous speculation as if each one is a fact. I really love History Time, and this one, along with the Doggerland one are my favorites. The video is really well made, and if you a follower of current events, is is very easy to see parallels between the Bronze Age and today. It is an oversimplification, but one take away from this documentary for me was how disrupting trading networks for a sustained period can lead to a domino-like collapse of civilization. I believe you referred to this as “system collapse” in your video. I am hopeful that something like this couldn’t happen to us today, but this documentary along with the recent supply chain problems, really make me think about how easy it could be to have our own “cyber-age collapse”.

No they shouldn’t. In fact they should stay the fuck away as corporations have a tendency of ruining just about anything given enough time.

@@NathanCassidy721 Never said he needed them. Actually was stating the opposite.

Not that many people watch TV networks outside of sports when you can just pull up Netflix or UA-cam and look for what you want to watch.
Thank you so much History Time!!
This was the most comprehensive overview on events of the Bronze Age Collapse.
Pete Kelly, in view of this painstakingly well researched documentary, I must emphatically acclaim the high level of detail, quality, and the historical value of your work, while asserting that the words "intellectual," and “academic,” seem to be a fair description of your background. To conclude, I would like to inform you that I have been, for quite some time, an enthusiastic subscriber of your Channel. Thank you so much for this upload; I will be looking forward to additional episodes (particularly those in connection with the mysterious “Late Bronze Age Collapse”). Cheers!
Do you write professionally by chance?
@@averagejoe9040 no. I unfortunately do not write professionally. Yet, I trust I have missed my "calling," for I greatly enjoy writing about various topics, particularly those related to history.
I love these documentaries. I fall asleep listening to them and have the craziest, most wonderful dreams about bronze age living ❤
By far the best documentary I've seen on the Sea Peoples. Thank you so much for the excellent contents!

Wouldn't DNA testing of Mediterranean people give some idea of origins and migrations and hence connections between them ?
Your documentary's are amazing. I've never seen anything nearly as good as what you do. Especially about topics like this that are so rarely covered in depth yet you present everything in a way everyone can understand completely but is comprehensive and deep diving at the same time. Best history documentary maker I've ever watched and I've been watching everything I could since I was 6!!!! Thank you. You were made to do this.
Your histories are breathtakingly awesome, friends! I have been a history-phile for many years and your presentations about the Phoenicians and this about the mysterious seal people are works for art and inspiration. Thank you SO much!
Amazing documentary about ancient history - the sea people, the late bronze age collapse. Interesting to watch till the end. Tnx4sharing.
Okay, my first comment was a joking one, but seriously, thank you for all the hard work, Pete. I love Egyptian history, among others, and with the production quality, I thought this was straight from a TV channel. You're doing more for all of us than school ever did, and grant us access to all kinds of knowledge to quench our thirsty minds.
Just read the Bible if you want to know the truth story of the hittites
F
@@dgpgllcofficial6168
The Bible hardly touches on the Hittites. A few references. Their history runs a lot deeper than those few chapters that might mention the Hittites.
@@JackHaveman52 actually READ the entire Bible front to back and then come back to me.
@@dgpgllcofficial6168
I have read the Bible, cover to cover, as an adult.
Appreciate the in depth histories of these people. Much better than a 40 minute History Channel doc
This is beyond what History Channel is capable of producing. With the History Channel doing this you would end up with the narrator asking surprising questions to every ridiculous speculation as if each one is a fact. I find it laughable and irritating at the same time. Watch the Oak Island series and you'll see what I mean. This is high quality content.
Your work for the historical things you teach are some of the best i ever came across in my 23 years of life… incredibly AMAZING work that you should always feel humbly proud of. Heck the truth in life is always the way to go🙏✝️good work amigo.
As a general rule, I don't watch YT videos longer than 30 mins, but this one was absolutely amazing and kept me focused from start to finish. Great job, keep it up!
What a stupid rule..most of the best content is over 30 mins
shanos antwanos If homie wants to limit themselves, point it out but let them! it's their bad decision'
I am ashamed that it has taken me this long to thank you most sincerely for your exquisite videos.
This last year has been rough for everyone, including me and your channel really helped me, not just as a wonderful distraction but to add perspective to the crisis we have been living under.
I attribute my Eureka! epiphany that this too shall pass to my own philosophical reasoning (Holla, Plato) of course.
But I never would have felt confident in my realization or reached that conclusion when I did if it weren't for your uploads.
And I strongly suspect that many people have had similar experiences thanks to you.
That's how impactful you are, Mr. Kelly! Chapeau!
wqt h the channel atlantean gardens. thats unbelivable too

I'm so wary of history (or "history") on youtube I had to sit down and do a bit of research about the topic and the channel before I committed to watching. I'm so glad I did - this was fabulous. Well sourced, fascinating, and well presented, and a period of history that's largely ignored, with an important focus on how interactions between different nations and struggles for resources shape history.
Going to check out some other videos and give the podcast a listen,.Thanks for the hard work and the high-quality research and writing!
Check out the Histocrat, all of History Time, and survive the jive. These are my three fav history youtubers by far
So I am not the only fact checker here on History Time ! We’re the truth going south is history ! And here is a fact ! While China is building a moon , I am giving China A moon if you know what I mean !
And here is some more truth The Flex Card is a Scam ! They will take your information and you will never hear from them again ! But you will hear from the People they sell your information to ! And your Identity may even sold to one or more of these illegal aliens that will need a new identity when they apply for Government Services !
amazing job, thx!
Awesome work! Hands down the best documentary on the subject of sea peoples. Well researched, a plethora of photos and maps, clear narration, simply one of your best videos! Thank you for the very professional work that you put into your channel!
My favourite bit was the line about the Pharos winning all their battles progressively closer to home.
"And if you aren't seeking knowledge, well... pretty sure that's how you get Sea People"
Fell off my chair.
After 2 and 1/2 hours of good information seeing, re-seeing, and re-seeing the same images, over and over again becomes PAINFUL.
Absolutely brilliant. I took several senior level classes in college that covered this, and all of them together are not anywhere near as thorough or unbiased as yours. Thank you!!
Your amazing man. I took a microdose and watched this. Best trip I've ever had. Had a huge grin on my face the whole time. High quality and very in-depth. I love your music and editing also. The Sea Peoples / Bronze Age collapse is one of my favorite subjects. Much love from South Carolina.

Thanks for taking the time to do such a great job, and helping me to think!
I was thinking the same thing!!
Kimberley Stanley i would love to hear your opinion on the so-called "Freedom Convoy" in Ottawa (and elsewhere, now).
yours as well, Xiomara. Thanks!
Yes history always repeats itself
@@XJonAye it really, really does! People really should spend a lot more time studying history, and maybe, just maybe, we could avoid making some of the mistakes of the past.
I thank you so much, this video was the best I have ever seen on the Sea People. I was so confused about all the tribes and different cultures that made up these mysterious people and you have made it 100% more knowledgeable and easier to understand. Thanks again and I will be looking for more of your videos. 🍀
I have always been a military history buff, and usually more interested in 20th Century AD stuff, but this is absolutely fascinating. Great video man.
Top notch presentation. I found your effort’s rewarding to watch. I’m so glad to know there is still scholarly and entertaining content outside of the classroom. This is especially gratifying when contrasted with the current state of outlets such as the History Channel. All that mystery and not one extra terrestrial explanation. Good job!
I found it strange that Ulysses & Menelaus both spent 8 to 10 yrs returning home from Trojan War.i theorize they were part of the Sea People along with many warriors who want to explore the new world of Black Sea and Med for loot & adventure. Why return? Nothing happening in Greece 1200 BC. Think Sea People, along with author made up of Warriors escaping famine, drought, & preyed on unarmed villagers. But Sea People welcomed volunteers & it grew & grew.
This is an excellent documentary on an ancient time that has been a mystery for ages. I never get tired of learning.
Couple of times a year I watch this documentary... its one of the best ever made.
Lol same
Hey Pete Kelly, I'm Janet Kelly lol. Thank you for doing a show like this. I see this part as a sort of missing link to how we lost our past. You also have alot in common with my family. Way to be awesome and help us understand reality
