  • Sacrificial blót stones of Iceland
a presentation and discussion with Kári Pálsson
at the Hurstwic heathen study group
In this presentation, Kári Pálsson discusses the research he did for his thesis at the University of Iceland on the concept of blót (sacrifice) practiced by heathens in Viking-age Iceland. Kári looks at the meaning of blót to these ancient people, and how blót could have both a personal and a public meaning. He reviews the stories of blót told in Landnámabók and other ancient written sources, and then looks at archaeological finds of blót stones from Iceland: the sacrificial stone blood bowls that tell us more about these ancient rites.
For this presentation, Kári joined us remotely from Iceland.
The Hurstwic Heathen Study Group is an organization that meets monthly for informal presentations and discussions on topics of interest to heathens and to anyone with a passion for Norse-related topics.

I really enjoy watching these videos. They are very informative and help clear up the misconceptions about what was actually believed during the viking age. I watched this video assuming that it would be about a big party where some blood was poured, as an offering, on little wooden gods. That's what my understanding of what a blot was. It's interesting that it's something else. Your guest was enthusiastic and really seemed to know a obscure subject. He gets points for that.
I'm a little bit bothered that Hurstwic doesn't seem to get as many views as other people making similar videos. Often times, less then 1000 even when you seem to know so much about your subject. Hurstwic also doesn't come up in the recommended when other historical reenacting videos have been watched. I was talking about it to someone else and they said "maybe their tags are too specific. They should say "medieval reenactment" that should make the videos come up with the other medieval sparing videos."
It's just a thought. If it's not already one of your tags, maybe it should be. I would like to see it up there with the other medieval videos.

I am curious about how these stones differentiate from the common grinding stones of the mortar and pestle variety we are all familiar with and are (and were) used by every culture world-over... Similarly, most cultures have a traditional blood dish they eat, the first step being to allow the pooled blood to congeal, usually followed by slicing the patty and boiling in a seasoned bath. Sacrificial blót stones or garden-variety kitchen utensils?

The Iceland poetry of Trójumanna saga mentions centaurs, Hercules, and sirens. But does the Trojunmanna saga mention satyrs?
