    For those wondering, the Rangers continued to use the Enfield for so long because the Enfield system is incredibly reliable in the extreme cold of the Canadian Arctic (often down to -50° C and below), and because its .303 cartridge has enough muzzle energy to put down a charging polar bear.
    The Rangers have trialed more modern, self-loading gas-operated rifles on several occasions, including the M1 Garand, C1A1 SLR, and our current service rifle, the C7. All had severe reliability problems due to the propellant gas often condensing INSIDE the gas tubes before it could run the action - they'd be able to get one or two rounds off before failing due to the horrible fouling.
    Source: I am a Royal Canadian Navy sailor, I've gone on several exercises in the arctic, and have had the absolute privilege of being able to work alongside the Rangers. They're VOLUNTEERS who act as police, medics, firefighters, search and rescue, and soldiers for some of the most remote communities in the world. They're mostly people from the Inuit and Aboriginal nations, and they're all complete fucking badasses.

    As a Canadian Ranger myself the C 19 is the perfect set up for our extreme northern climates. We conducted a range shoot 100 km south of Churchill MB this winter with temperatures at -51 with no issues. As for the screwdrivers u got there our rifles came with a retractable bit multi screwdriver specifically designed by the Rangers.

      @Siegfried S The laminated wood stocks ARE all weather. Laminates of hardwood (probably birch?) pressure bonded and sealed with two-component epoxy, the stock would have to be immersed in salt water for (how many?) days before any sort of finish damage would happen. In fact, I'm not sure what natural environmental conditions COULD cause that finish to deteriorate - being left in direct sunlight next to the ocean for weeks?

    • @noth606
      @noth606 5 років тому +6

      Siegfried S The rifle comes from Finland, if you think some US made thing has better cold weather resistance you are a dumbass, simple as that. Leave your plastic stock rifle outside for a few hours in -50C and then drop it on the butt and see what happens. This stuff has been tested and restested in conditions you cannot imagine, and the best material has been selected from that testing, it's not some random pick because it looks nice or is cheap.

    • @EternalRecursion
      @EternalRecursion 5 років тому

      @Siegfried S I see your point. I assume the laminate stocks are lower cost to produce, as they are pretty common these days; high quality laminate blanks can be mass produced, then CNC milled. Laying up fiberglass stocks would probably raise the price point too high (I guess).

    Hey Bloke. The bolt is that smooth so that it can still be run if the action freezes. This is the same reason why every machined surface on the rifle is so smooth and fine - so that if it freezes, it won't break the rifle, and will still run.

    Being a Canadian and having both owned a Tikka T3 and more No.4s than i dare to count...
    The choice is on point.
    Modern ammunition, optics and all that follows a modern rifle.
    And Tikka's quality is top quality.
    my 2 T3's (in .222 & .308) are the only factory finish rifles i have that have not corroded when being exposed to hunting conditions.
    I spent thousands on an FN TSR and its started to rust the first outing i had it. (and no, when out in the bush you cant oil it ever 10 seconds)
    nothing smoother than the bolt on a T3

      Paul Alexander FN TSR, Several Savage 10 & 11 models, 2 Remington 870s, and more of my rifles have had rust form on the factory bluing and i have had to Cerakote them or reblue em.
      And thats from max 3 days exposed to the elements and very well taken care for.
      I used ezox for awhile but felt it wiped off to easy

      @stevenwhillans8 5 років тому +3

      Paul Alexander Im religious with my oiling and maintenece of my rifles. But when your out ruffing it... shit happens.
      But my T3's are the only factory finish (for newer rifles i may add) that havnt started the corrosion process.
      The only rifles i have that dont rust without extreme care are my old ones... pre 64 Model 70s, My no.4s, ect.
      throw some 10w at em and lock em away 😂

    I totally agree with you about the accessories being poor. I think Tikka are missing an opportunity to use the publicity around the gun to build their brand. I bet the cost to Tikka of supplying the gun in a quality hard case with a custom combi tool, good quality rod, cleaning kit and 3 spare mags would be less than £200. If they added that to the price with just tax and dealer markup on top it would really improve the image of the gun and by association Tikka. Missed opportunity, but hopefully a lovely gun to own and shoot long term.

      'quality hardcase', '3 spare mags' 'would be less then 200 pounds'.. no.. this isnt a gun company dealing with the taxes you find in the UK or the US mass producing guns and parts, this is a finnish gun company that tends to pride itself on quality that has to pay finnish taxes, and pay its employees to survive the finnish taxes.. here in finnland, tikka mags cost between 40-60€ a piece, with 1 about 120€ on the site i use for the tikka T3x CTR/TAC A1.. idk what they would charge for the hardcase since it wont be like the sako TRG case at about 830€..
      im not bashing on you, but.. you really underestimate the prices x3
      btw, in the video bloke said he paid about 3000€, here the price is about 2,300-2,400€ for the same rifle..

    Back in the early sixties when I was 15 there were a lot of the sported-down Enfields available for sale and they were cheap $15.00, so I bought one and grew to love the gun and especially the sight layout. I would go on to become very effective in hunting anything from beaver to moose. Then I entered the Canadian Army and was given an FN rifle that had the same aiming pattern and I was qualified as a Marksman in both the C1 and C2, even as heavy and awkward as the C2 was, it was my favorite long-distance rifle and was super accurate with it. I still have my favorite rifle and have surprised a few fellow hunters's with their 30-6's and their scopes at how quickly I could get off a kill shot with that Enfield that was older than any of us.

One in .243, one in .308, both running optics. I’m tempted to get one someday. I run iron sights, and these look sweet. As long as the drum doesn’t freeze solid. Fascinating to see the replacement to the excellent Lee-Enfield. I served in the Canadian Army from 1983-99. So I am well used to the dial rear sight, as that was used on the FNC1A1. I still remember the serial number of the first FNC1A1 issued to me: OL0709. It was in yards, not metres and also went up to 600 yards. But the large-aperture was marked 200 yards, there being no 100 yard aperture. I am rather curious as to why the C19 starts at 100. I rather doubt that the FNC1 had a flatter trajectory; they are both firing 7.62 NATO rounds.
    Also curious if they have an Arctic trigger guard capability. In other words, the capability to completely remove the trigger guard so as to be able to be fired with Arctic gloves. A civilian manufacturer and their lawyers may view this as insanely dangerous and not provide the capability on a civilian version.
    It was always a pleasure to work with the Canadian Rangers. For the benefit of those who are not Canadian Forces veterans, I will point out that their role does not include assault infantry. A Ranger section does not have a light machine gun with which to do fire and movement. I always experienced them in their role of providing local guides and instructors in Arctic conditions. A role performed superbly well.

      I think you need to watch the video where the Bloke shoots with this. The screwdrivers are good quality, but they're not quite right for the screws on the rifle. It might not be the military issue tools, but they should fit.
      The last time I bought a new computer, the packaging was similar quality. Things looked well-designed. I choose that because the price wasn't so hugely different. If you're getting a laptop, which is where you might justify a carrying case, there might be a standard case available, but not everyone would want it. The Canadian Rangers get standard cases, but that's what an Army might do. Different world.

    The power of the 303 was well known. When I was in the English army cadets in 1973 that's what we used. It nearly took your shoulder out such was the recoil and they told us that from about 300 yards it could put a round through 3 men. The barrel is fluted and at first I wondered why, but realized that it had to be the right contour for the sights to fit in the barrel and to have it light enough to handle well. They are normally fitted to . 375 and larger barrels. I live it and sighted in with Remington’s 220gr 30-06 load. While I'm not sure the additional features of the Arctic are worth the price, in competition with reglementary weapons (TAR in France) I'm fairly certain you'll have to get this version to enter...
    By the way, there were even less accessories in the box my rifle came in :(
    Another sticky point: spare mags are SUPER expensive for the CTR variants (including the Arctic). About 150€ I believe.
    For anyone interested, ammo that work well:
    - GGG (even the cheap FMJs, great for training - I got my best results with their Sierra 168 grains)
    - Federal (obviously)
    - Sako (didn't try but that's what was used by Tika during development of the rifle)
    - Sellier & Bellot 147 grains FMJs

Both beautiful rifles I was especially impressed with the sauer. Anyway my gun dealer back then introduced me to the tikka I believe it was called white tail hunter in lieu of the sako he suggested that I take a look at the tikka which I believe was fairly new to the market at that time. I opted for the sako. Honestly I’m not sure I made the right choice. In fact looking back I’m pretty sure I made the Wrong choice the tikka was about half the price as the sako and honestly I expect it was a better quality rifle then the sako.

I used to use a Lee Enfield No. 4 in the full original military issue stock, complete with iron sights identical to what the Canadian Rangers used to have. Although it was responsible for filling my freezer as well, it is much heavier than the Tikka. In addition, the Tikka has a much tighter grouping mostly due to the fact that it had significantly fewer rounds down the barrel. I for one believe that the Canadian Forces made a wise decision in replacing the venerable old Lee Enfield.

    If you can produce a whole rifle you can also make parts for the Lee Enfield. Govt. wanted something new for Colt Canada to produce. Few parts go bad on Lee Enfields and there was a ton of spares that were dumped over time. Of course a modern rifle with fewer parts doesn't hurt morale and less parts to keep on hand. It's a hunting rifle.

    I know Tikkas are supposed to be great rifles but here in the states this thing runs about $1800 USD. Now I know that with marginal improvements in quality can come exponential increases in price so I'm not completely scoffing at it but that's a lot of money. They could have at least included a Pelican or equivalent hard case and a couple extra mags.
    I'll probably just get a Savage model 10 scout and learn to be OK with the action not being as smooth as Gal Gadot's backside.

      bigghoss762 I couldn’t agree with you more. For example here in Canada cabella’s had a rifle that was made for cabellas in 308. It was called the model 10T. In the states it could be had in 6.5CM as well as 308.
      It came with the first Gen accustock which is an excellent bedding platform for the action,it wasn’t available with a threaded muzzle so it came with a very fat 0.85 inch muzzle diameter,5R rifling and a flush 4 round mag but the 10 round savage mag.
      These guns cost 800 bucks Canadian out the door,they are 1/2moa capable with tuned reloads,and print MOA with anything off the shelf.
      No they aren’t as smooth as tikka however at more than 1/3 the price I could deal with a slightly less smooth action.

If you don't need irons, the tikka model the arctic is based on is basically the same price as the ruger.

    Colt Canadian makes excellent rifles and if you ever get a change to visit the factory in Ontario it’s a real treat; especially if you get to look through the locker of old rifles as well as experimental rifles. The Canadian military rounds are made by General Dynamics (used to be IVI).
    For very cold weather I like a bolt that disassembles without tools as eventually you come in from the cold, the rifles sweats and if not dried before going out again, the firing pin can freeze.
    My preference would have been for the PGW coyote action that had the model 70 style safety which would have also made in Canada.

      I for one waited until one of Canadian online retailers had a Boxing Day "No Tax" sale and still had one of these is stock at $2500. Still gulped a few times, but it just feels so right.
      Owning a TRG and few Tikka's meant that this was meant to be a "known combination" of options. But I am still surprised how much that stock "just feels right" and how well the rifle balances. I do own a MDT chassis that can host this rifle, especially since they updated their cutout for the 2-stage trigger. So you can use it in "classic" setup or swap to chassis, pop a good scope on and go all "Precision Rifle" with it.
      What's not to like ? Oh, the price of Tikka/TRG magazines is harsh. But the older MDT polymer magazines work, albeit at only 9 rounds. Been also trying to convince contacts that make excellent muzzle breaks to build something that would support a compatible front sight.

    The Tikka T3 shoots as well as most precision rifles of this weight, straight out of the box , and provided decent ammo and a good scope is used. The ones I’ve set up with new brass , Hornady projectiles , have shot well under MOA.
    This one looks like an ideal utility rifle with the Picatinny rail and aperture sight. 165gr Hornady SPBT would be ideal for this and is a nicely performing game bullet. The SST’s tend to exit without expanding.

    Who came up with the idea of High Vis red layers in the stock ? Justin Trudeau ? If a Ranger ever tracks onto intruders, they are going to be "special" intruders. Why not Valmet military rifles? Valmet is also Finnish. Their military rifles are engineered with extreme cold in the forefront. Second best AK system in the world.

    • @StunnyBruh
      @StunnyBruh 5 років тому

      Any semi auto or full auto is going to have problems in the extreme cold conditions the Rangers often operate in. It just comes along with that type of action. A bolt action will always be more reliable. As for the red stock, Rangers aren't meant to be a traditional military force so we have no need for gear that blends in with the environment. Hence our bright red sweaters and jackets. We would never actually engage human enemies unless in extreme circumstances (like an invasion from another country). Even in that case, we are told to report it and that's all. We train reg force and reserve force in wilderness survival and navigation, as well as Search and Rescue operations in our communities.
