Have both and the tikka is far better, feels better quality all over and has a better trigger. Tikka is more accurate and will age better where as the ruger will not.

Just bought a tikka yesterday after shooting my ruger american for a year.. HUGE difference. Alot better quality in the tikka. Probably won't even touch my ruger american for a long time.
I have both but you’re comparing a $500 gun to a $1300 gun. The Tikka is smoother, lighter and more accurate but bang for your “buck” the Ruger is the best deer buster out there for the $$. #allgunsmatter

There’s no contest in my experience. The Tikka is a higher quality rifle on most all accounts. I like the placement of the safety on the Ruger better, but the bolt lock of the Tikka is a must for me. The Tikka probably has more felt recoil than the Ruger, but a limbsaver accounts for that. It’s nice that the Ruger has a rotary mag with higher capacity. They are both shooters, no doubt, it really depends on your budget and preferences.

I’ve owned my Tikka T3 since 2012. Love it. It has put a lot of venison in the freezer over the past decade. I used a Lee Enfield No.4 in it’s original military configuration and iron sights for years before that, not really knowing anything different so making the leap to something made in this century was a big one. One thing I did get for my Tikka though is the 5 round magazine which makes shooting at the range a little nicer.

I purchased a Ruger American 2 years ago in 7mm-08. I really like it. It was at a more conducive price point for me for my son’s first rifle. It shoots sub-MOA with the Hornady factory loads we use in it (Full Boar GMX). We have taken 6 deer with it in 3 hunting seasons. In fact, when the two of us are not hunting at the same time, I usually choose the Ruger American over my older Remington 700 in .30-06. Probably due to the lower weight. The longest shot was 170 yards, while the shortest was about 40. For us, it was a good purchase. I would buy again. Thank you for the quality videos.

The 7mm-08 is a good choice. I don't use a 7mm08 but I do use a .275 Rigby and the two are close to the same. The two largest elk I have ever taken were with it.
My Ruger American in 7mm08 took 3 deer for 3 shots at 250m .. sitting resting on my knee .. amazing rifle for the money ..
@@J354CAO I've got the plain Jane standard Ruger American model 6906 in 7mm-08, best bang for the buck! The Ruger American's in 7mm-08 shoot great because they have a faster twist barrel than most manufacturers, American's are 1-8.5
The competition is usually somewhere between 1-9.25 to 1-10 for this chamber.

I have a Tikka and was in the market for another rifle. When I tried the Ruger American, there was no doubt in my mind, it was worth the extra money to go buy another Tikka. Now I have 2 Tikkas.

If you want to combat stock flex, remove the barrelled action. Next, go to the barrel channel clean off any rough bits and “scuff up” the inside of the barrel channel around the bracing; do this with a dremmell or a screwdriver or something similar. Scratch it right up and don’t bee too nice to it, all this “scuffing up” is very necessary. Once you’ve blown out all the dust, fill the barrel channel below the level of the receiver with something like fibreglass resin. You want something that won’t expand when it sets, and that’s why everything had to be “scuffed up”; so the resin would bond to plastic stock. This will take most of the flex out of the cheap plastic stocks.

I cant speak for Ruger but I really enjoy my Tikka. Excellent trigger for my feel. Safety is logical. The lite weight was a desired feature as I tend to hike. And for me the critical factor was Tikka makes left handed models. BTW 5 round clips are available, I carry both, one with 180 grain for the just in case situations.

The Tikka nestles comfortably in my arms, whereas the Ruger feels unbalanced and fore heavy, making it hard to hold an aiming point.

I am trying to compare a Tikka T3x 30.06 with a Ruger American right now, along with three other under $1000 rifles unfortunately I don’t physically have either one in front of me so I’m dependant upon your analysis. Was going to purchase a tikka t3x lite ! But upon going to the shows in my area , came across a Ruger American Compact in 243! Shoots sub moa out of the box and I’m a fairly new shooter! Shooting the tightest little groups at 100 yards flinging 80-100 grain ammo! With a Sig Buckmaster 4-12x44 , it will take plenty of game thru the years!
I have used a ruger American 6.5 creedmoor and I will say that think shoots very accurate! I’m getting less than 1 moa at 100 yards. I like the trigger but I’m not a fan of the bolt. It sometimes will double feed if you aren’t rough with it. Hope to try a tikka one day

Just bought a 16" Go Wild in .243 win for my hunting rifle. The accuracy out of the RAR's are nothing short of astonishing...against any gun out there.

The latest version of ruger American has a much more reinforced stock and they stiffened up the forearm with thick honeycomb and changed the magazine to an AI style

I have both . Action on tikka is glass smooth. Barrel on the ruger is amazing. The 6mm creed American I have has shot .25 groups with handloads from the factory. The action is a little rough especially compared to the tikka.
The tikka holds its own for accuracy. I don't like the stock on either.

I have the Ruger GO Wild in 6.5 creedmoor. The bolt is smooth and no zipper. Ceracote is very nice as well. Also the newer stocks appear to be a bit stiffer than what is in the video. With reloads my rifle. Shoots dime size groups.
Ive got an American in .270 win, and a t3x in 30-06. The tikka heats up quite a bit faster and the laminate stock is a lot more solid. But other than that there isn't a lot of difference

I've never understood why people are so concerned by a bit of flex. Sure, you can make it touch, but when in regular use, will you ever be putting that kind of force on the stock?
I can see filling hollows with light foam to reduce noise from accidental bumps. But adding weight seems counterproductive. Weight will help with perceived recoil, but these are hunting rifles, not bench rest or long-range precision. I only worry about recoil when I'm testing new loads, and I need to fire a lot of rounds in a few hours. I put 100+ rounds downrange with my .308 with no issue. My .45-70... Well, let's just say testing new rounds for that rifle is not my favorite way to pass time.
I learned long ago in the construction of homes that some flex is necessary. That goes for everything that has outside forces against it.
I have the Ruger American Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor and .308 still in the original stocks but I've highly modified both stocks with bedding them and filled the stocks with milk jug plastic mixed with some sand. It gives it a little bit more weight and makes it a little more rigged. With the milk jugs all I did was cut about 8 milk jugs up in little peaces put them on an old cookie sheet heated them up in the oven until it was soft enough to start stuffing it into the empty space in the butt stock. Do it a little at a time or you'll end up with a huge mess. Learned that the first time I tried it. I like the Ruger Americans because I just can't see spending a ton of money on the Ruger precision and still having to upgrade it. Mine out shoots my buddies who thinks money can buy him accuracy. LOL

Ruger m77 all day every day
Was out hunting in very rainy weather. Rifles were soaked for two days. My browning blued steel was fine but my friends tikka blued steel was covered in rust inside and out. After that experience no Tikkas for me.

One thing that goes for the Ruger is the ability to relatively easily replace the barrel once it gets shot out. No, it's not an issue for the majority of shooters, especially shooting mild calibers, but if it's a magnum chambering or something like 22-250, the the need may arise sooner. The barrel nut type of attachment similar to the one on Savage rifles makes it possible to do it yourself in the garage without fancy tools, if a person is somewhat mechanically inclined. Dealing with pre-stressed threads on a Tikka may be a b*tch and pretty much warrants a visit to a smith for 97% of folks out there. Another thing that is a big plus for me personally on the Ruger I have (ranch in 556) is the ability to use smaller capacity stanag (AR-15) magazines, that are cheap and plentiful. This second feature makes it a no-contest in favor of the Ruger for me. Having said that I do love the Tikka too: smoother action, a bit less effort to open the bolt, even on an empty chamber that likely has something to do with the rate of the cocking ramp and a bit more ergonomic factory stock. Mine isn't t3x though, but older t3 with carbon steel action and tube. The difference as I understand is that mine has smaller ejection port than the x and that's about it. Both Ruger and Tikka have cheap, puny, rattly plastic bolt shrouds that I don't care for, but you gotta sacrifice something for the price, right?
It is not wise thing to change barrel in carage .It is better use good gunsmith to get it proper way and not trying badway.It is not handy joe work at all.

I owned both rifles for several years, the Ruger in 7mm-08 and the Tikka in 22-250, I traded in the Tikka for a Ruger in 6.5 CM, I just didn't like the Tikka. For me the Ruger isn't as pretty but man do they shoot well, are pleasant to shoot and they just work. As for the "zipper" sound of the action that went after about 300 rounds.

Have hunted with both. The Tikka actions are a dream - the Ruger American's aren't. BUT - at the end of the day, the trigger on the American makes it capable of very near the accuracy of the Tikka at much less cost. I (personally) can't justify $800 for a stainless T3 when I can have the same configuration in an American for under $500 - and they both kill deer the same.

Why buy a tikka for 800 when you can buy a bergara b14 for 6-700 with a sub moa guarantee . I actually have a gen 1 ruger American in 270 . I’m talking , first month it hit the shelf 8-9 years ago. It’s defiantly no thrills , but it shot MOA out the box with core lokts, can’t complain about that’s . I noticed over the years depending on how you leaned on it on a bench it was easier to get fliers and inconsistent groups due to the crappy stock. I put a bell and Carson fiberglass stock on it. Removed the safety bar from the trigger , and shimmed it. Replaced the spring. Consistent 2.5lb break. Still develops a smidge of creep from time to time . It’s 3/4 moa all day now, lean on it as hard as you want . But I got more money in it , than I could buy a rifle for that solved all those issues . Like a bergara lol

I like my Tikka T3x .300 WM, fit and finish are amazing, trigger is fantastic, but there are a few things that should be improved for the price point. The buttpad sucks, should be something like a limbsaver. The plastic bottom metal is unforgivable, there are several aftermarket options, but really? The most critical is that after a season in the field, I do not trust the safety! I usually hike with the magazine full, bolt closed on an empty chamber and safety on (bolt locked). When I get into position I take the safety off and chamber a round then safety back on until ready. Several times walking the woods I have stopped for a break to find the safety off, bolt open, and even a cartridge missing out of the mag.
I had a ruger 223 for one week it wouldn’t feed maybe 1 round a mag without jamming , I tried 4 different brands , types and weights all jammed. Traded it on a mossberg 223 flex and it takes ar mags , no jams, that fixed the ruger !

I have both, both in 204 Ruger. The rugers stock and the sliding of the action which I watch the feed are like a $300 gun but when the bolt is locks up and the trigger breaks it shots like a $1,000 gun. 3/8” MOA. So the stock really doesn’t matter. The Tikka bolt is soo smooth and no look lock up, better trigger.. It is lighter and shorter with 3/8” MOA. its my night predator gun because of the no look reliability. With accuracy close to equal. “My son is more accurate with the Ruger” Both shot 32gr the best. I shot 40 gr. on coyotes. You can not go wrong with either gun. Its your preference for your budget

If you hunt higher elevations and farther off the beaten path the weight of the Tikka will pay off for you. If you hunt normal fields and farms and woods the Ruger has more rounds and weight for running deer and running black bear with faster follow up shots. Both are accurate with a general edge to the Tikka and its phenomenal cold hammer forged, match Sako barrels. I couldn't decide so I got 1 of each.

Good video. I guess it's just preference divided by budget. My Tikka is good, so is my Ruger Go Wild...but, I bought a lil Mossberg 6.5 Creedmoor w/Vortex scope a few years back, for $349...and it is a SNIPER!! Kills every year, dead on. Someone's looking to purchase my Tikka right now. That's what they like. I found out, we've been duped by a lot of high priced (some over-priced) things. I strictly hunt. There has never been a time that I didn't take "food", because of the price of my gun. 9.9 times out of 10 it was user error........that .1 time, it wasn't the "foods" time to go. LOL.

@@Bullets4Bucks I definitely agree with that QC comment. My Bergara had a chambering issue. Really like that gun too. LOL. That's why I say it's preference divided by budget. For most hunters, there's some in in between price range guns that do well. I think it also has to do with ammo. A lot of people (including myself), just shoot over the counter manufactured ammo, on a budget. A couple of my guns only shoot well with premium ammo. This video really puts it on the table and gives people a fair look at the differences. My Ruger! Enough said. Lol. Thanks again for the video.

Don't think I'd buy a bolt gun without a cocked indicator.
Not sure how impressed I am with the safety on either of those rifles. I have a 3 position safety on my Savage FCP-K, where the middle position locks the trigger but allows you to work the bolt. Full safe locks the bolt. I personally believe you should be able to unload a rifle without having to turn off the safety.
The tikka does have one maybe I missed that.

The point you fail to mention is that in both these two rifles the reloader is restrained by the magazine in terms of projectile seating depth - a major issue for those of us who reload. My .223 cal RAR shoots 7k of rounds and is still accurate.
You could easily modify the tikka to address this issue. Tikka T3/T3x are all built on a standard action length, so a .223 does use a shorter bolt stop and a magazine with a short block to accomodate this. You could easily modify or purchase a .308 or 30-06 length bolt stop and accompanying magazine and use longer projectiles…. Your next limiting factor will be how the chamber and throat are constructed but if you get that far down you should probably be building a custom rifle
Yes but you are not the average shooter. Clearly you specialise in high precision target shooting, and it is more than clear that these rifles are aimed at budget minded hunters, so i find your criticism somewhat unnecessary.
Magazines or throats always limit bullet seating.
All I can say is I have a ruger 22-250 i thought it was the bomb until my son bought me a Tikka 25.06.. this gun his hands down wayyy more consistent and accurate than the ruger...I will never sell the ruger but its quality is about half of the Tikka..I am a farmer and rancher in Colorado and Nebraska...I shoot alot...at live targets!!!!!!!!!!!! at 4-600yds almost every day...Tikka hands down for accurate killing.

In 7mm-08 the Ruger gives you 1-8.5 twist while the Tikka gives you the slower 1-9.5 twist…and from what I can tell Tikka may have suspended manufacture of chamberings other than 6.5 Creedmoor and .308 anyway. No question Tikka is higher quality but it’s no good to me if I can’t buy one.
i shoot the Tikka Swede 6.5x55, the t3x in 7mm08 Lite and the Ruger M77 220 swift. Love these rounds but cant compare peaches to apples. All capable with right shot placement, but my Prefered Venum shots goes to my Tikka's hands down. That Swede in Forester stock is Candy, the Swift is Mexiican music to my Ears tho.

I have a Tikka T3x lite in a 6.5 Creedmoor. I really don't like the way it shoots. I think its because of the stock. I want to get a Boyd's " At One Stock ". Do you think it would improve the way the rifle feels. Let me back up first. I'm not use to shooting light rifles. It feels really weird to me. I'm not recoil sensitive, its hard to explain. I'm just use to shooting 8+lbs or more rifles. How do you feel about this decision. To you think it would be to my liking. I can't remember if it was you that talked about a Arken Scope, but I was looking into the vv SH4 6x24x50 Gen 2 Scope. Is this a good buy also. I value your input brother. Thank you!

The Tikka is the clear winner for me. I like the Ruger's magazine more but for an out of the box budget rifle Tikka wins hands down. Besides, I had trouble with my American Rimfire rifle that left me Ruger hesitant, and I had quality complaints with a 10-22 as well. I've bought my last Ruger for those reasons.

Tikka we think it’s best just not enough to warranty it more than 2 years. And yes I own one was just disappointed in the warranty and cheap plastic magazine

Well for twice the price and made in a foreign country with cheaper labor costs what does anyone expect? I would say that because a stock is a bit more rigid does not make in more quality. They are both inexpensive stocks period. Nice review because it is opinion, and we are all entitled to our opinions. I was thinking about a Ruger American Predator but the more I see the reviews on the triggers I am thinking maybe not. But for the price of that Tikka there are better rifles to be had in that price range. I can think of several.

Reason why I didn’t buy an American is because I don’t buy a gun because it’s cheap, I buy it because it’s an investment and I want my firearms to make my toes curl when I shoot them. This shouldn’t even be a comparison lol.

Recoil on .223.... never noticed on a Tikka T3
For those who like recoil pads on ruger spend extra and a get a muzzle brake and learn to shoot with a light af rifle
You would be better to compare the Ruger American with a Savage. The Tikka is in another class.
Tikka might be little better but i have 4 Ruger American. 308, 2x6.5 Grendel 22in and 16in also 7.62x39.

Forgot the most important part, accuracy. How do they group? Everything else is secondary.
Tikka is guaranteed less than inch group at hundred yards. Not know ruger thou.
Both have been known to shoot well above their price point. I have a Ruger American predator in .308 (18 inch). It shoots $8/box 165 grain Tula soft points 3/4 of an inch at 100 yards. It’s a good budget plinker, and I think it would be a good rifle for shooting houses or box stands.
Tikka for me. T3x superlight in particular.

No contest. Tikka is way ahead quality wise. Try a Sako also.
I have both too, Ruger is almost HALf price the Tikka. My Ruger is in 6.5cm : crazy accurate, threaded barrel ( predator) so sweet to shoot. Trigger is alright and the safety is not locking the bolt. The Tikka, well , its double the money, yes you get what you pay for, smoother,… etc
And Tikka ; you always need to replace the recoil pad.
Tikka always the same action length , with shimmed magazine. Ruger Real size action in fonction of the caliber.
Tikka at this price they should have threaded barrel on all their barrels .
Whick one the best, only you can figure that out: For me : Price wise : Ruger hands down and by far.
If you have more $$$ go tikka, but she will not outshoot the ruger, shes just : different.

What's the difference in weight? It looks like the Tikka is weighted down with stuff.
The new Tikkas have an upgraded recoil pad that is softer.
My Tikka is a T3x in 7mm Rem Mag. I plan to buy my 7 year old grandson and Ruger American Compact in 243 Win.

I've shot my tikka 7 times. 3 to sight in. 2 to confirm. and 2 bucks for my freezer. Trigger is amazing.

These two rifles are not in the same class. The Ruger is budget with a capital B. The T3x synthetic while not a top of the line rifle is a class above that particular Ruger model.

True but I will put mine up against a tikka or bergara for consistency. If you like to tinker you can make every fault of the ruger better for literally a few bucks and a couple hours.
I think just the action alone Tikka is not supposed to compete with any other factory action , it should be more in the custom action maybe lol ?

Not sure these 2 should compare to each other, the tikka is about 2-300 more dollars than the Ruger American.
Without watching this video, I’m going to make my comment first. I’ve owned Rugers and I have a Sako varmint rifle and a Tikka for hogs and deer. The quality of materials and machining is hands down in Finland’s favor. Tiger get its steel from China for Christ sake. You better have a geiger counter handy. My Sako shoots .25” at 100 yards with factory ammo. My Tikka can probably be a .5” rifle with match grade ammo. Hunting ammo comes in around.7”.

I just know ya get what ya pay for in most cases. Spend your money wisely.

They are high rings... the scope was for a different rifle set up and had the rings already on it so to test the rifle i just through it on.
Spray some teflon coating on that ruger bolt an it will quite that zipping sound

I have minimal experience with the Ruger but many hundreds of rounds through my t3x in 6.5x55 there really is no comparison between the 2 the tikka at just less then 1000 canadian for the t3x lite is hard to beat it shoots like it should cost double

I have seperate videos shooting each. Accuracy cones down to ammunition and many factors so saying one is more accurate with limited testing is near impossible
Shoot both guns and test for accuracy using at least 5 factory loads. I assume they were both in the same caliber. Good video otherwise. I owned both guns and the Tikka is a much lighter and more accurate rifle.
