      Hey Peter! I'm terrified of getting more crap in my lungs. Also its amazing what you can accomplish when you're trying desperately to avoid something else. I spent a good month procrastinating starting the grinding, coming up with more and more parts of the dust collection and ventilation system. Eventually I built it all and had no more excuses but to start grinding!

    The design flaws we all know about. The workmanship flaws bring this fiasco to another level. Hope you found everything that needed repairs. You don't want to ever repeat this tear down and grinding process so good advice from Colin on the bulk head in the engine compartment. Get'r done now so you can relax knowing you never have to repeat this process...will help with resale value too.

      Well I would say poor or sloppy workmanship is a large part of what we live with. There are many apartment/Condo buildings being town down after 20 or 30 years yet my Aunt and Uncle lived in a cottage that had an entry in the Domesday book. I myself purchased a showhouse on a new estate this is built so prospective buyers can order off book .I toured some of these slightly newer houses that had never been live din and the difference in quality was palpable.
      However a boat is something you rely upon to keep you safe whereas Lagoon obviously slapped then together as quick as they could. It may well be that those 450's that have not had bulkhead issues YET only are in this shape as these boats had better workmanship.
      I think people should reconsider buying any French built boat the cost of labour is obviously a lot higher in France then say Vietnam South Africa etc.

    • @david_shih
      @david_shih  3 роки тому

      @@glennedwards1449 so i’d say most of the 450s show the problem, and if not, it just hasn’t happened yet and needs to be reinforced. The other lagoon models should be fine, despite the ‘standard’ workmanship levels.

      Looks to me to be severely lacking in design strength. I'm not sure these repairs will hold up. Sad to see those cabinets ripped out. I think they will cost a bunch to make look good again. It seems to me the cabinets should have been designed to add lots of structural support. Any boat designer who relied on 3/5" 7 ply wood was not very good. As Collin said his additional lower side plies popped right off so they glued and screwed some like yours. I see so many shear failures and a few days of fiberglass slapped on is wishfull thinking. The fix kit was hatched in the boardroom as an appeasement. Those 450's and 500s have zero resale value in this mechanical engineers opinion.

    A full-face positive-pressure (from remote) air supply mask is a really good thing. I use a Breathe Cool II from Turbine Products. A turbine pump is placed in an area with clean air and supplies low pressure air through a hose to the full-face mask. I no longer have sweat dripping in my eyes, or rolling around in the bottom of the mask. No worries about an imperfect mask seal. I haven't tried it yet, but I've got a Y-valve to split the incoming air into the Tyvek suit. That's a modification recommended to me by a shipyard worker. It should help cool and keep some particles out.

    • @david_shih
      @david_shih  3 роки тому

      I’ve heard of the positive pressure masks, but never the positive feed into a suit. Ingenious…no more dust creeping into every tiny suit opening!! I’ll check out the breathe cool, thx!

    • @sailingcyclops
      @sailingcyclops 3 роки тому +1

      @@david_shih The mask works really well. I've used it in nearly white-out conditions while grinding fiberglass in the forward storage compartments of my catamaran during a Florida summer. The cyclonic separators upstream of the shop vacs are definitely required when working with such volumes of fine dust. I use one from Home Depot that fits on a 5-gal bucket. With that and a HEPA filter in the vac, exhausting air into the living area has been OK for me. I'm about to setup a negative pressure zone to grind in one of the heads. I now live aboard, so I'll have to be very careful about leakage. I'll use a 20 inch box fan with a 20 inch air filter taped to it, and fashion an adapter to a pair of 3 inch flexible duct hoses that will fit to the small portlight there. I can't just release dust where I'm docked now. Was the dust that escaped your zone solely from you entering and exiting?

      IMO, don't worry too much about releasing on a set schedule at this point, I'm sure most of us viewers can appreciate the amount of effort you're putting in making and editing the videos, and as long as you're enjoying doing it, it'll shine through in the end result.

Loving the map of the boat where you show the area you are working on, but really it's all of it, great cuts, great music, great info, and it seems like your videos just get better and better. Great work on your dust system as well! Not being there I can't tell but the only thing I can point out that might make it better is metered air replenishment. You of course want to keep a low pressure area where you are working but also allow a finite amount on new air in to allow your exhaust fan (cool unit by the way) to carry away the particles. No idea if the air from under the door and all the crevices is enough, but you could always put one more hole in your window board and another bit of wood on a screw that you can rotate over the hole in order to adjust incoming flow. Ehh, it's a theory at least. Cheers, it might not be easy, but you will have immortal videos of those times to look back on and for others to study and enjoy :-)

They don't sell cars without a/c, there's no such thing as a store or restaurant without a/c. If we took our a/c addiciton any further we'd build those quarantine style pastic tarped enclosed walkways to connect our front doors to our driveways so the walk to the car would be a/c'd as well. The interior of my 52F was absolutely shitters and the crappy adhesive putty, didn't stick to shit ~ and it's the putty that Lagoon relied on for a proper & secure bond between the floor and hulls ~ and then you find out the putty didn't cure and bond the top to the bottom. I know why they use them, its used to make sure that the resin gets into every part of the lamination but not left in like afterwards, and to see parts not been laminated properly with dry sport and bad laminations that have not been rollered down correctly is completely shoking.

      @@elkskiutah8204 hrmmmm, never though of that being a reason for no tabbing...i just thought they miscalculated or were cutting costs. Either way the grey putty bonding method for ribs and bulkheads is so inadequate.

    • @chraven69
      @chraven69 2 роки тому +1

      When you think ablout how they build the any vessel. They firstly astart of with the hull the and ribs and stringers, next comes the bulkheads. After this they then bond down the main deck to the rest on the vessel. So before they add the deck they can add tabbing to all bulkheads before putting the deck inplace.
      Think about how you yautch would look if all the deck was not there at all. Your see everything. So why not make tabs then before adding the decks.
      Think of it like this, you have a box with no lid. Add bulkheads. Now add tabs.
      When you add the lid you automatically add more surface areas for the gule to bond down top lid.
      Thats why i was saying its so mind blowing that there not there at all.

    A man and his boat. 100 Points for the edit. I too have done the hard yards. Baby powder is the only thing that works in cooler climate, however, once you sweat, that Sh!t will itch for 3-5 days. Scrub it in deeper and you will only feel it for 2 days. PPE is great, and boat repairs are fun, when you have money, time, PPE, cooler climate and helpers. OTHERWISE, it truly sucks. I think most people don't understand why we do it.... Because its bloody expensive to pay others.... You are all doing a project that many would charge 50-100K. At least you get to see everything and know your Cat, inside and out.
    Once again, great video... I cant wait for the movie.

      Yes, why the heck is boat work so expensive?! I'll never understand. Sadly panama has a constant wet heat, so baby powder and talc just turns to paste and collects at my feet. Hard yards....I'm so ready to sail baby! What kind of boat are you in, you sound like you've been through it all as well.

    Great episode David, what you've learned on your own and from others has resulted in quality workmanship! The results will be a better than a new Lagoon 450... You certainly won't lose your rig from the initial shoddy factory workmanship!

    I am a fan of your fans, and vacuum system. Absolutely brilliant. That pile of dust in the dirt is not going to be drifting into crevices on your boat. (I once lived in an apartment I was also renovating. I had plastic up isolating the area where I was drywall sanding. Didn't matter, it got into my my camera in the next room and clouded up the viewfinder. The nastier the dust, the more insidious it is.
    I've worked with epoxy, and a little bit with polyester but never with vinyl-ester, It does seem that if you have de-lamination - then it maybe it wasn't properly prepped and laminated in the first place. (I have this vague nightmare of everyone knocking off for the day, or the weekend at the Lagoon factory and then doing no bloom wash or sanding to prep for applying the next layer of vinyl-ester when they come back to work.)
    If you're repairing a hole I'm pretty sure you're supposed to put the biggest piece on the bottom and then taper up to the smallest piece on the top. This way when you sand it you sand off the edges of the layers, and never cut into middle of any of the fabric.
    (Cat Great Circle in a video comparing the Lagoon 52 they replaced with an Outremer 55 mentioned reducing the noise from inside the boat as a factor ua-cam.com/video/Ohs-3nPzDK8/v-deo.html The whole video is good, I just linked to where Mark lists 'interior noise' as a factor. Makes me wonder if there are not craftsmanship issues on more than just the 450s. )
    I've fought the fiberglass itch battle probably since your grandma was a kid (1960s?) We'd vacuum our skin, take really hot showers and then rinse in cold water. Never heard of vinegar. Loufa? Actually that looks like one of those Japanese scrubbers - been using those (but not for fiberglass) probably since your mom and dad were kids (1982?). Probably good for it. The best way to avoid fiberglass itch is aluminum, steel, or somebody else doing the sanding someplace else on some other boat.
    My plan for the Lagoon 450 is ... well I bought another boat. I'm choosing to trust the Aussies and the Vietnamese . But if I hear one squeak I'm turning around and taking it back. (Remember Brad Pitt in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood? "Fix it." ) Hang in there.

      your nightmare is my nightmare...there were definitely days where the workers were like, "amine blush? i don't see no blush.... you sanded this last time right? let's glass!"
      this is classic, couldn't be more right.... "The best way to avoid fiberglass itch is aluminum, steel, or somebody else doing the sanding someplace else on some other boat."

      @@david_shih You know I don't think I've seen amine blush more than just a couple of times - however I've always assumed it was there and usually sanded to remove it before adding more epoxy. I'd love to see videos of the Lagoon factory on a Monday morning- I'll bet they just start mixing.

    You can layer the glass mat starting with the largest first. The thinking behind doing it that way is that each layer has a greater contact patch with the layer below.

    • @david_shih
      @david_shih  3 роки тому

      I've heard it both ways smallest to largest (more pieces have contact to original surface) and also largest to smallest (biggest pieces has best bond to original. To be honest I cant work out the logic in my head of which one is better. Thoughts?

    Hi David. Fiberglass: I hate fiberglass itch. The worst thing is rubbing or washing it. Try blowing it off. That is what we do. Boat: shocking the really bad quality, dry glass, non bonded or touching bulk heads and bridge deck. Amazing work you are doing.

    • @sailingcyclops
      @sailingcyclops 3 роки тому

      I second this. Everything you can do to avoid rubbing the glass against your skin will aid in keeping it from being embedded. If you don't have an air compressor, a leaf blower level of air is the next best thing, and then finish with high pressure water like from a hose nozzle, not a pressure washer. :-). Use the air and water to push it off your skin, rather than against and into your skin. There's no perfect prevention from itches after it's already on your skin, but avoiding rubbing it in, and a hose spray at the end, has made the itches uncommon enough for me.

      Oh, YEAH, greens on a boat!
      I'm thinking basil, as it is easy. It HATES the sun, so indoors. And I'm gonna try tomatoes, a cherry one (probably black cherry and sungold) and let them climb around a fixture. Oregano, maybe. BUT, jalapeno! That one is soooo easy, it just needs sun and warmth. The poorer the soil, the hotter the jalapeno.
      Perhaps a bit of scallions. Its a easy potted plant.
