Dude try using some cheap Masonite 1/4” board as your 2nd template before going to the expensive wood. So cardboard first, then cheap board, then final product. I’m used this method in my van build and didn’t waste a single price of wood other than the Masonite. Glad to see more progress videos man! I love your videos!
Can build?! I love van life. I diy’ed a transit build that’s super functional but not very pretty. We’re living and road-tripping in it California at the moment. I’ll try the Masonite next time!
Download a Translater App for your smartphone David. You select any language and you and the other person just talk into it and it show's or speak's whatever language you are saying and hearing !!! Saw you on Colin's channel..ease up on the Coffee Buddy, haha !! Almost forgot, when you load plywood just drop the tailgate or turn it the other way around too much wind resistance the way you had it..Good Luck Brother from North Florida...
I’ll have to try that! I’ve only used the apps that put out text. Was torn on the best way to load that wood. Was worried that it would fall out of the back if the tailgate was open. It was a super short bed and the potholes here are horrendous. Thanks for stopping by bro!
@@david_shih Yeh thanks for the response. Haha..you can leave the tailgate up then it acts like a spoiler or down and run your straps around the back of it so it doesn't slide off. Yes anastasios (that I most definitely remember how to pronounce now!), the bulkhead was probably fine before I went and made that last cut. But I wanted it to be perfect and ruined it! It was a bit short at the bottom and also a bit short at the top (where it needed to be right up against the future beam!)
Keep up the good job David. Redarding your trip to Victoria, Canada no worries to cross with the ferry and your van. Go to bc ferry. I was not able to give you the internet site because UA-cam removed my post…. Anyway good luck and cheers
Thanks Marc! Just looked it up and found it! But looks like we won’t make it this trip! In San Francisco at the moment and headed south in the next few days.
Nice video, David. I was just driving on Swan Dr by Spicewood Elementary yesterday hoping you might release a video this weekend. I hope things are going great for you and your family.
Great job David ! Will you have a sandwich of plywood bridging the overhead section across door frame as a load spreader/stiffener ? Was worried after table getting removed you would come back to missing plywood as well !
Hey mike!!! Good eye, that beam is super important and is going to be about 25 layers of bi-ax fiberglass on each side, 50ish layers total! That beam cracked right in the inboard corner so we had to grind it all down. I’m afraid plywood wouldn’t be strong enough. The wood was stored under parlay, but I ended up getting all new wood because theirs had sat under the boat for a good 4 months. It was probably fine, but I’m paranoid about these bulkheads being weak, so I want them all to match!
@@david_shih Think of it like a chain or cable, it's only as strong as the weakest section. Did you taper the layers of glass as to where they start and stop ? The best practice is to make the deepest layers (1st) shortest and add each additional layer of glass overlapping longer so bonds are spread out across larger areas to prevent any one from being the weak link. Colin did similar techniques on Parlay.
Straight line cuts, use a straight edge (board, metal or factory edge of left over plywood) and claps. Subtract the width of the gard to blade, set and clap. Poof perfect straight line. Hope that helps.
Mr. Ski. Sounds like sound advice, but you lost me when you started speaking gibberish with that gaurd and clap talk! Have you ever picked up a piece of plywood to use as a straight edge but accidentally use the non straight side?
You know when mary was watching this she called out that same exact thing and said that I would be disappointing you! Haha! She’s going to be so happy to see this comment lol.

Yay family upgrade!!! yes you understand my truth...we are the 1 wo/man band... we might be slow, but we won't ever stop!
@@david_shih - Exacly. It will get better though, once the kids and spouse is on board and we get support on the channel.
I see a LOT of editing classes on your future...
HANG ON though! Kids get older and more self relient and one day you (wifey) wake up and the kids are dressed and have eaten. The BEST feeling. And you even get to have "kids-show-sex". 😀
Ten minutes.
Just endure through the breakedowns to the bite downs and get ON WITH IT.
Love U D, can't wait to meet your adorable kids! (And extremly supportive wife...) /Catta
@@familyupgrade love your git’r done attitude. The kids will take care of themselves one day won’t they? What are we going to do with ourselves then?
@@david_shih - my plan is to shanghai them to a boat and go around the world. That way I get to keep them for a while longer... :-D
@@familyupgrade I'm road tripping with just the 2 older ones at the moment and boy is it easier. The challenge is definitely the 2 youngest ones that scream at the top of their lungs without notice! Any tips for that?
Great episode!! Lol taserman! Don't call that a threat call it motivation!! 😂🤣😂🤣
Quite good motivation I might add!!!!
@@david_shih 😂🤣😂🤣👍👍
Dude, it looks awesome!!!!
aw thanks man! wait till you see it all glassed up!
Good job David 👏
Great job! Love the happy energy that you portray. I’m super impressed how you manage all that you have going on and keep that smile going. As a part time UA-camr myself, I totally get how hard it is to get the editing done. Keep up the good work, much respect from a huge fan in Miami, FL.
Miami? We were just there a few weeks ago. Picked up the new dinghy at nautical ventures in palm beach and spent a night on a friends cat in lauderdale. nice videos btw! teach me how to fish?! i caught exactly 0 things on the 1 week passage from st maarten to panama! dude you're like the king of snapper...that Christ of the Abyss shot starting at 3min 27sec is epic.
@@david_shih Thanks David! I’ve been meaning to try and meet you (and Colin) at a South Florida boat show, but my schedule has been crazy. Hopefully next time you come by this way. I would gladly take you out on my Sea-Doo for some snapper fishing 😎so hit me up 🤙
awesome man! how far out do you typically go? maybe i can bring the dinghy along!
I enjoy waching your videos dave 😀
Hey palili! How’s the weather out there?!?
@@david_shih the wsy the tourist like it,no breeze hot and warm hahaha
@@palilikock1341 hot and warm! NICE!
Nice job Dave, it’s just fing hard work 👍
No other way to put it Greg! You get it!
13:48 and Link is going easy on ya David! lol
Nice one and man, you see them bulkheads!?!?! Solid bruh!
Hey Blair!!!!!! You da man, mary and I have been talking about your crawfish that we aren’t getting to eat this weekend. Thanks for helping us out on patreon my friend!!!
No one ever looked so thrilled to get kicked in the balls repeatedly as you have trying to get your boat fixed up !!! lol It's been great seeing you get things done !!! You should rename you boat "The Ryobi" for all the tools that helped you get her done !!! lol
Haha. Just picturing what you said, ha!!! I would of these ryobi’s didn’t keep failing on me! The for following along obrothers!
@@david_shih If you boat keeps falling apart after you're done then the Ryobi name will fit.
Haha. Well if you put it that way then it’s definitely a Ryobi! Although their brushless tools are pretty reliable.
The little engine that could. I think I can, I think I can. 💪
Hell yes I think I can!!! [as long as Colin helps me]
@@david_shih 👍
Excellent video. I always look forward to seeing another step in your journey. You are the Casey Neistat of sailing channels.
Lowell! thanks bud! casey of sailing? dude he's my heeerrrooo! what an epic story teller that dude is!
Oh wow - @david_shih is still looking at the comments! David - came for Parlay and Colin and fell in love with your story and your work too. You have such a cool vibe to your videos. Hope to see your boat on the ocean one day with Parlay somewhere close by (y'know just in case!). Best wishes dude!
hahah woudl love to chase those guys down and sail with them ! but man, they're literally on the other side of the world now...
Brilliant, glad to see you back, great vid, lots more to come I hope!
Hey Nigel, ima back! Next video, no delay!!! So much more to come my friend.
Quality edit mate. 👍🏼🇦🇺
ah thank you strong! thank you brother!
Keep going dude :) love the attitude , and determination :) always a smile love that :)
Jim! Can always count on you for the support. Thank you brother!!! More to come!
You make bulkheads fun.
thats Art! are you a videographer? i see that massive rig on your shoulder! looks epic
"And then someone stole my table under the boat..." ah Panama, how bittersweet your charm.
Haha yup! But my table had a short leg and it was balanced on a brick. The new tables were so solid!!! I made out ahead!
Love watching your progress
Well good thing bc I’ve got so much more coming your way!
Mate I love you're work and how you seem to keep such a positive outlook in-spite of a situation not of you're making. Great video as always..
Hey Stu, ah…life is too good to complain, I could be sitting in an office hating my life like I did for years before all of this. We Definitely have less money now, but we have a dream for once! Glad you enjoyed the vid, making the next one for you as we speak!
@@david_shih hell yeah man Ford Transit build for the win! My wife and I travel around the USA in ours. I am a travel nurse.
@@memoryim too cool. What a life. Where in the US are you now?!
@@david_shih currently in Ohio. I’m heading to New Hampshire or Maine next. My most recent previous contracts were in CA and TX.
@@memoryim was the Texas contract at the houston medical center? Mary works there!
They have apps that translate audio also.
Wish I was around to help you on that boat. If you're ever around Amelia Island Florida you can dock at our place on the St Mary's river no charge..I'll run you around to the supply stores, etc. I'm a retired Captain and Craftsman with all my tools.
God Bless you and yours buddy !!
@@Real-callsignVIPER thx for the tips. We’re headed to Florida later this year (gotta get back to Texas 1st!) I’m Not familiar with Amelia island, but I’ll look it up, and let’s have a beer.
The first bulkhead came out sweet, I was wondering where was the fail... and then oooooh yes 😂 we’ve all been there dear friend 😂😂😂
Nice bulkhead work !
Hey thank you will! Wait till you see my diy fiberglassing coming soon.
Nice video, David. I was just driving on Swan Dr by Spicewood Elementary yesterday hoping you might release a video this weekend. I hope things are going great for you and your family.
Great video awesome editing too
Thanks Nathan, the editing just takes me forever! Wish I could pump these out weekly like everyone else!
@@mkllove yup followed Colin’s layup exactly and then slapped a few extra layers on top just in case! Tapered and staggered 1cm to 1” apart.
Nice job . Your killing it!
Thank you john! Thank you!!!!
Way to go David.
thanks crystal!!!!!!!!!!! was waiting for a comment from you! thanks for watching all of these!
Great episode David. One thing though, I’m not sure I would lend you tools lol.
I promise I’ll be careful!
The iland of aruba is wathing for you 😎
Straight line cuts, use a straight edge (board, metal or factory edge of left over plywood) and claps.
Good work! Been waiting on this video
It’s here!!! Trying really hard to get this next one out in a week!!! Thx Eileen!!
Respirator, check.
