    I also have Accuquilt! I love that you are giving us ideas, thank you so much! (I only joined you last night!). This year I'm using my scraps as they have accumulated!! your KITE idea is wonderful- I hope to use it! Cheers from warm (32C or 86F) Brisbane Australia

    I looked at a lot patterns to possibly make a quilt coat. I love yours the best! I especially love the ombré colors of your “kite pieces “. Unfortunately, I don’t understand how to create them. Would you mind expounding a little bit more on that part of your planning, etc. thank you so much for this video. Definitely, the prettiest design I’ve seen anywhere and the one I hope to make for myself!

      Thanks for the comment. I posted another video today where I talk more about the project and how I'll be laying the blocks out to start sewing them together.

    Do you have a pattern for the spiderweb quilt or the quilt coat?

    This is so cool! I am not into quilting, but I am currently doing projects that use up my scraps. I really want to reduce my sewing print in the environment and projects like this help a lot to bring more ideas. Thanks for the video. I am always glad to see you here. I look forward to the next video! Question : how do you remove the paper backing?

      Glad you liked it. In the past I have made scrappy quilt blocks and used them for the outside of a zipper bag or tote bag. In that case I will usually sew directly onto a sturdy interfacing or fusible fleece and skip the paper. But to answer your question, as I sew it is perforating the paper so once the blocks are sewn together it is easy to tear the paper away. Then it gets tossed into my compost pile to help next year's garden.

    We do not get the newspaper anymore but we do get a free community phone book. It is never used since Google. The pages make great paper foundations.

      My local library still gets a newspaper so I ask for the old copies sometimes. I also get a grocery store mailer once a week that is the same type of paper. I'm surprised you still get a phone book. I haven't gotten one in 10+ years.

      @@Whitney_Sews we live in a small town and it is sponsored by retailers. It is not thick but has enough sheets to do paper piecing. Old pattern papers can be used also, as can tissue paper from the dollar store.

      It's newspaper I cut with my Accuquilt. By sewing onto paper I can just add random scraps and once the paper is completely covered I trim the excess fabric away for a perfect triangle. It makes sewing scrappy blocks easier and takes out any math. Just sew until covered then trim, repeat many more times 😄

    How do you remove the paper when you're all done?

    • @Whitney_Sews
      @Whitney_Sews  Рік тому +1

      The sewing perforated the paper so after all the blocks are sewn together into the quilt top it's easy to tear the paper off.

    I have a ton of scraps and was wondering what to make. After you get these done do you just tear off the paper?

    • @Whitney_Sews
      @Whitney_Sews  Рік тому +1

      Yes. I sew all the blocks together into the quilt top then tear the paper away before adding the batting and backing. I have a paper piecing playlist linked in the video description box if you want to learn more. It can be as simple or complex as you want it to be.

    What is the paper for?

    • @Whitney_Sews
      @Whitney_Sews  Рік тому

      It is the finished size of the block. So instead of having to accurately cut every piece of fabric I just sew fabric onto the paper until the paper is fully covered. Then the excess fabric is trimmed off. After all the blacks are sewn and trimmed they will be sewn together to form the quilt and at that point the paper is removed and put in my compost.

      @@Whitney_Sews Why not leave the paper off, sew the fabric scraps on the sides a bit oversized, and then place the paper on top after and cut around it? That way you don't need to take the paper off later. You can use a single paper template to cut around all of them, or use a piece of cardboard, etc.

    • @wtb61

      Foundation.

    • @Whitney_Sews
      @Whitney_Sews  Рік тому +1

      I've done the style you're describing when sewing random strips of fabric into squares or rectangles, but with these being triangles with specifically placed center pieces it's just easier with the paper backing.
