Hi Dr Jo. I loved your video and exercises. I was diagnosed 7 years ago after about 15 years of almost constant pain and sometimes excruciating pain. I’m now 47 and have never been more pain free since my mid 20’s. I very rarely feel pain or stiffness anymore due to the stretching regime I do daily. The stretches you have shown are exactly the ones I have been doing for about 5 years now and they work for me. They have been totally life changing for me to the point where I hardly even think about AS anymore. I hope this helps any other sufferers of AS out there. Take care.
Been going through this since my early 30’s until now at 51. I can go a few years no issues as I do exercise to strengthen my core best I can. But every now and then I’ll bend over to pick up a tissue or something small, twist to throw it in waste basket and then stand up straight too fast and BAM! Screwed for next couple weeks hoping it doesn’t roll into a full blown sciatica. Because that is hell. Long story to say yes, I believe stretching is just as important, if not more important than just working out with weights, etc. Took this last bout to figure it out. Even when you think you’re in good shape. Will humble you real quick. Just my little story.
Thank you so much Doctor Jo! I am 26 years old and have had A.S for over a year now. You're video was very helpful to me and I am making it a goal to do these daily with my other stretches. You've really helped me.
Thanks so much. I was recently diagnosed but have suffered for many years without any intervention. i don't want this to progress as rapidly as it seems to have been doing and these exercises will help with that. I'm only 41 years old and I love living my life, being on the move and making each moment count.

I wasn’t even doing them all to reps, just a quick test we’ll say. So, the one exercise where you pull your knees up, the right knee no issues. The left pull up and I could feel the pain on both sides of lower back. Anything more you could add? Just keep doing them as you instructed?

You're welcome, and thanks :-) It doesn't always have to relate to age, but it also might be you had it earlier in life, but didn't have any symptoms. Good luck!
AS gets detected mostly during your early 20s to 26. That what I got to know from my doctors, and the amount of time I spent on death bed searching about it. I bad AS, so much so that my lungs were infected, my eyes were sore, my intestines were filled with ulcers which used to bleed.
It's 4 05am I've been up for 2 hours with unbearable spasms in my lower back. I've strapped a hot water bottle to the area and taken pain relief and slowly the euphoria of relaxing muscles is kicking in... definitely going to start these stretches tomorrow. Thanks for the video, glad something good came out of this night that I found this vid
Nice Dr. Jo Thanks for the specific exercises. I have one question. Will these exercises stop the progress of Ankylosing Spodlytis or do I need to take TNF Inhibitors with the exercise?
This is the only video I have for it right now. If you can, the best option would be to go see a physical therapist in person to get a specific program for what you need.
More stretches if you can, use this as my morning routine, thanks, I'm losing movement in my neck. tho i just started medication two weeks ago, and changed my diet DRASTICALLY, so if you have any special neck stretches for AS or general, could you please link me as you have a lot of videos !! :) Thanks
Hi. I am just diagnosed with AS. Thinking of starting the mobility exercises. Currently, the body is that weak, not enough even to digest the cardio (cross trainer, cycling) in the fitness studio. So do you recommend these exercises? The spine inflammation is in the middle of the back.
I just tested positive for HLA-B27, and I've had lower back pain for the past 30 yrs, so. My symptoms are just like AS. I'm not sure what to do from here. My weight is fine, and I've been practicing a low carb diet for about 5 years. Also, 3 weeks of no added sugar. What else can I do?
I often get backpain after 2 accidents but at that time the doctor said that it is not a problem since im still young (at that time im under 20) and last year i went to the hospital because i got a very bad back pain and cant holding it anymore while at that time i have to be active for my research for my undergrad thesis. After a Roentgen the assumption is that i got Ankylosing Spondylitis, but they say that i have to go to the nerve specialist and the doctor said that there is no problem with my back and only giving me some medicine, injection, and Flamar gel without telling me anything and now sometimes my back hurts so much...
Hi Doctor Jo! I was recently diagnosed with AS. I typically practice Pilates and I’m wondering if there are any Pilates exercises that should be avoided?

very helpful thanks Dr. Jo. If i sit for 10 to 15 minutes standing up is difficult and painful so is changing sides during sleep and getting off from the bed. Will appreciate any tips.
My mom has had AS since she's had it her whole adult life. I am aware that's it's hereditary do to the HLA-B27 antigen which makes me twice as likely to experience its symptoms. I'm 25 and according to my research, people are diagnosed with AS when entering adulthood (17-18). To this day, I've shown no signs of the disease. Does that mean I've been exempt or do I still have a chance to contract it later in life? Thanks for your answer. Cheers!
I am 20, with my father potentially having the HLA B27 antigen, after having non Hodgkin’s lymphoma - I’ve recently been diagnosed with A.S; but we’re currently not sure if we’ve got the HLA B27, but it seems more then likely. I’d suggest just looking into it, it cannot hurt to look into it. Better safe then sorry :)
Unfortunately, I don't know that answer since I can't evaluate you. Everyone is different. If there is any way you can see a physical therapist in person, they should be able to help you figure out a specific program for you and help answer your questions.

Hello Dr. I am having AS but my HLA B27 is negative. M having severe pain in my every joints. Please suggest me some exercises to reduce the pain. And any other information
Hi.... What is the reason for AS when HLA B27 negative... Are to you taking any medicines right now? Any immune inhibiting injections - facing any side effects??? My bro is facing severe pain in Both SI joints... Looks inflammation in both SI and ankle... It has been 3+ months... Steroid must?
Question for you Dr. Jo! In addition to recently being diagnosed with AS....an x-ray of my spine showed spondylolysis/spondylolisthesis at L5 with grade 1 anterolisthesis of L5 on S1. Do you think these exercises would be harmful for those structural issues? And if you have a seperate video to exercises for those issues that would be great unless you think these exercises would work for that/not be harmful. I just want to be able to do some exercises to help both my AS and these structural issues. Thanks!
They should be fine with a grade one. Just make sure you are not doing big extension (bending backwards) movements. These might also help: ua-cam.com/video/vCWYsF3_9Ig/v-deo.html
Dr. Jo, one other quick question for you. Do you think these exercises are good to do for someone who currently only has AS in the SI joints and is only feeling pain in that area? Or are these mainly only better for those with AS that has spread to their back, etc.? Thanks!
I am 24 and diagnosed with AS last month. Can anyone share some ideas to deal with it? Because I am taking [Sulfasalazine (1000mg)] from last month but no notable changes I get.
Dear Doctor . My age is 29 and i am suffering from Ankylosing spondylities for last 8 years . right now my neck is jamed very little movement in my neck . So please tell me some exercise for relaxing my neck .
AskDoctorJo hi can you tell me really ankylosing spondylitis have a remedy because some of doctors say it haven't a remedy sorry I can't speak english well. thank you so much
I have had pain in my right ilium bone since October. Had an X-ray last week and been told I have spondylitis in spine which is what’s causing the pain in my hip. I hope if the diagnosis is right then these exercises help. I haven’t been to the gym in ages due to covid lockdown :( I’ve always been active so this sudden pain has really shocked me
Sleeping positions and bed firmness are very different for everyone. It's more about your comfort as long as your back is in a fairly neutral position. This video might help give you some ideas: ua-cam.com/video/qZeosT6aGx8/v-deo.html Good luck.
Hello Dr. Jo I have been affected from ankylosis spondylitis since I was a kid.(from age 15). Now I am 31. I think It has been serious now. Some doctors are saying if I have hard working and hard pressure over those areas I might have a serious effect on those areas. Please advise me.
There is a doctor in india who can treat AS and make you cure permanently..I am 20 now..I got this disease when I was 17..I am under his fine consultation..Yea I am hla b 27 +
how many times a day do I do these exercises? Would you please mention that too? It would be very helpful tthen. Specially the first one the weirdly laughing one.
I have this spine problem too and I STOP doing my routine and my posture worsen. When I lay my back I have my head 30 degree above my pillow. Can you suggest a routine for me beside going to my Doctor first. Thank You!
Yup! I did start doing it, a BIG THANKS to your video. I know there is no cure for Ankylosing Spondylitis but for sure this will help my posture. Thank You again!
@@singhisking1548 well i lack dedication for myself so I do it once in a while yeah sure pain is less but my posture still in slight curve like. But for sure when you put effort doing this it will prevent to worsen the posture.
Diagnosed hlab 27 syndrome Hv swelling n fluid accumulation at ankle joint since four months. No medicine is working. Also hv cervical stiffness in moerning . May u suggest any stretching exercise to reduce pain n swelling from ankle joint
YIKES what causes this. I drive truck and have been experiencing back pain. I understand sitting causes certain shortening of muscles leading to a condition
AskDoctorJo There’s a lot more to it than that. It doesn’t just develop like regular arthritis. It’s hereditary. In order to have it, you have to test positive for the gene HLA-B27. But just because you test positive for the gene, doesn’t mean you have it. A lot of factors go into it. With a positive blood test, you’ll start being monitored for it. They’ll look at your CRP level, sedimentation rate, any and all inflammatory markers, your metabolic panel, and your CBC. It’s routine blood work every time you go to the doctor because it’s a condition that will affect you for the rest of your life. I was diagnosed in July. There’s no cure and they don’t know what causes it, just that you’re born with it and, if you test positive for the gene, you better start praying. Mine started as general arthritis in my hands and knees when I was 12 that spread throughout my body over the years. I’m now 27 and it JUST spread to my back last year. Many things do not cause it. The only known cause is your genetics.
Your exs are very helpful dr Jo...really like it,can u plz explain each and every exercise with reason why are you doing that and which structure you are going to stretch or strengthen...thanks

Thanks!
They should still help.
I am 24 and diagnosed with AS last month. Can anyone share some ideas to deal with it? Because I am taking [Sulfasalazine (1000mg)] from last month but no notable changes I get.

I hope it helps too.

Should i perform indoor or outdoor??
At morning only ??
Please tell about sleeping positions and stiffness of beds to be used in ankylosing spondilitis.
Sleeping positions and bed firmness are very different for everyone. It's more about your comfort as long as your back is in a fairly neutral position. This video might help give you some ideas: ua-cam.com/video/qZeosT6aGx8/v-deo.html Good luck.

YIKES what causes this. I drive truck and have been experiencing back pain. I understand sitting causes certain shortening of muscles leading to a condition
It can be caused by many things because it forms from a chronic inflammation to the spine. Good luck.
