My dad, a college music professor, played this for one of his music appreciation classes, challenging them to identify the language. They couldn't see the screen, only hear the music. Most of them guessed German which is what the Queen of the Night Aria is originally written in. They only realized they had been trolled when dad performed the Vulcan salute as their only clue. It was hilarious.Just kinda goes to show that you haven't truly experienced Mozart until you've heard it in the original Klingon.

I'm absolutely charmed by this! I'm starting a Star Trek tabletop RPG campaign, and I'm going to find a way to work this into an adventure!

KNOW THIS, those who read these words! I am Konora of the House of Malok, and I speak on behalf of my outcast brethren, the QuchHa’! From all corners of the Empire, they are scorned and outcast: forced to seek glory on the far edges of the Empire like friendless targs!
Know that they are hated and despised for the human DNA given to them by the HemQuch plague!
Know that this is an injustice in the eyes of Kahless!
For are their hearts not as proud as Klingons, as Kahless taught us?
Does their blood not run as hot as ours?
Do they not fight and die and conquer as Klingons do?
The humans know of these matters too. It can be found in their teachings, their art, their history. They understand honor. And courage. And struggle. And glory.
They are perhaps the most worthy foes the Empire has ever known.
The QuchHa’ claim these noble qualities from their human sides. They conquer them and make them Klingon.
To honor them, we have translated these human works into Klingon. Many will recognize the themes they embody. Indeed, those who do not know will swear that they come from Klingon authors.
But like the QuchHa’, they have humanity in them.
Let us show you how glorious that can be.
Konora of the House of Malok
Grand Dame, Imperial Klingon Opera House, Qo’nos

As both a huge Star Trek fan and a trained musician with perfect pitch, I must be that one guy that points out that her intonation on the highest phrases are a quarter-tone flat, and out of time. But she did better the second time.

I don't know the original lyrics and though I speak Klingon well, these lyrics don't really make much sense to me. The pronunciation is actually fairly good, but I still can't follow the story. I wonder if the lyrics were translated with a machine translator. Anyway, in case they are accurate, here's how the first section translates:
He hates Gre'thor, the place burns, the heart farms.
    The destruction dies too.
It dies, it dies, the destruction dies too. The area next to the monitor burns.
If the area next to the monitor burns.
    It is accomplishing Sarastro.
    It is accomplishing Sarastro.
No, he finds it, you, yourself, go through it, death propels the day.
Thus at certainty you are, No.
    He endures, the daughter farms.
Like I said, I don't know the story, so I made some assumptions. I assumed chugh should have been attached to meQ, making it a conditional sentence. Since this seems to be by mozart, I'm guessing that "jIH" - "monitor" is actually referring to a magic mirror or something. I also assumed that "vegh SoH" was supposed to be "Davegh SoH" (otherwise the sentence would say "He go through"). I can't make heads or tails out of "SoH DIchDaq" (and you may have noticed that my translation doesn't really make any sense either). But I think I know what's going on in the last line - I think it's really supposed to be "taH puqbe'wI'", "My daughter endures."

Just looking at the first line, it's word-for-word from the glossary:
DI'vI' Hol: The vengeance of Hell boils in my heart,
tlhIngan Holqoq: Gre'thor muS meQ Daq wIj tIq
All the bits are (almost) correct, except for {muS} which I think is used for "hatred (vengeance)". They're just in the completely wrong order.
The correct tlhIngan Hol should be: tIqwIjDaq meQ ghe'tor muS*

    • @breandan789
      @breandan789 9 років тому +2

A problem with the original is that each line is broken up by syllables and sung as bits and pieces, which makes it nonsensical to back-translate. Here is what I think they intended for the first 2 or 3 lines:
      tIqwIjDaq meQ ghe'tor muS*
jIH retlhDaq meQ Hegh QIH je
      SoHmo' Heghbe'chugh Sarastro*
      vaj puqbe'wI' SoHtaHbe'
This is very basic, trying to use as many of the elements as they did. Some just make no sense, like {vegh SoH} for "through me" and {vo' Hegh} for "from death".

+Jeremy Cowan if I recall, and it's been a few years since I sang this:
Hell's rage burns within my heart with death and desperation- death and desperation flames everywhere around me
If sarastro doesn't feel by your hand the pain of death then you won't be my daughter anymore
[to be] outcast be forever, forsaken forever, fractured? be forever
All the bonds of nature (the sentence is reflexive so it all relates to the bonds of nature not Pamina herself)
If not by you (r hand) Sarastro attains death's pallour
      HEAR HEAR gods of vengence
hear the mother's promise (probably more like oath I guess?)
It's a very direct translation of the german and I may not have remember all the words exactly but that's how it goes... :)

Will your Klingon's assemble in their finest battle dress and sing of the glory of Ukraine and it's loss, in the traditional Klingon voice? Step out from the darkness and let the Earth hear and feel the glory for Ukraine that is in each Klingon.
