      It was a nice touch. The captain saw the officer was dishonoring and insulting Riker in a cowardly manner "behind his back" so to speak. He knew Riker didn't know Klingon so he's basically saying to the officer "If you're going to dishonor a man, dishonor him to his face where he can understand it." Even though the Klingon captain was leery and testing Riker from the second he came on board he showed Riker respect and gave Riker many opportunities to prove his loyalty and honor.

      In fact, there is one interesting feature here. The Klingons are ruled by a warrior aristocracy, and since Riker is also a military man, it means that he is their equal. If he were a scientist or a simple civilian, they would consider its not worth even to talk to him. Also interesting is the fact that the junior in rank showed disrespect to Riker who is higher in rank, which means that he does not show respect for the captain either. Which means it's Riker's duty to punish the upstart. Very medieval.

    The reason that the Klingons and the Federation have a practically unbreakable alliance is simple: honor and integrity. Trust is earned, not granted, and both the Federation and the Klingons knew this was their greatest weapon against their common enemies.

    Moments like this are the type of events that continued to help cement the alliance between the Klingon Empire and the Federation. The Klingons leaned that humans could be honorable and even good friends in battle against a common enemy. All of this despite considerable cultural differences. The Dominion war proved this even more.

    • @matasa7463
      @matasa7463 7 місяців тому +9

      They can respect honourable warriors. They thought humans were none of those things, but then they learned first hand how humans can be both. The issue was that humans have move away from their savagery and warmongering past, so the face they presented was that of a peaceful seeker of knowledge and wisdom, which is not going to impress the Klingon Empire.

    2:52 - always like Captain Kargan's approach here. Putting it to Riker as a first 'command decision', putting it entirely in his hands to see how he handles himself. Then he sits down with a smirk and just watches haha!!
    RIP to Christopher Collins - he died in 1994 at the age of 44 from a cerebral haemorrhage, comments from a number of his friends at the time suggest he had a number of 'personal issues' that likely contributed to his early death. Collins would make several appearances on Star Trek, playing the Pakled Captain in TNG's 'Samaritan Snare', he played the Albino's head guard in DS9's 'Blood Oath' and the Markalian character Durg in the DS9 episode 'The Passenger'.

    I love the nuanced portrayal in this. It would be easy to picture the klingons as the bully, but they do not do so:
    1. The captn does not instantly dismiss Riker when he sets foot on the bridge, rather inquires to his dedication to make sure he can trust him as an equal member of the ship
    2. When the lieutenant does not address Riker in plain language, he corrects him immediately so Riker has the chance to respond
    3. When the lieutenant challenges Riker the captn does not intervene since physical prowess IS something that is important to Klingons to hold any rank. If Riker is to be treated as a member of the ship he must prove himself on this too.
    It's a great scene imo because it shows Klingons not as oppertunistic aggressive beings but rather as a race that holds a specific code regardless of race or background. (also funny is the short intro, the Klingon is as much fascinated as he is ignorant about other races which is also an aspect of Klingon culture)

    I think what really got this for me is how, if you read the technical brief on Klingon ships, they are deliberately kept as dark, hot and uncomfortable places. This is to keep the crew spoiling for a fight, eager to board an enemy ship and engage with their bat'leths. That a human could thrive in conditions they're accustomed to must've impressed them a lot, especially since I imagine a lot of klingons view humans as soft.
