It would be interesting to see how you would insulate and control moisture in a shipping container house. I know it’s a bit off topic but it’s not an easy one.

My house has been an interesting building science project for me. I have a raised ranch in Northern VT, if you put a piece of Rockwool insulation in the 2x6 wood wall with nothing to air seal it from the inside, the plywood will get condensation on it in winter. However if you put a piece in the 2x4 wall against the block below it nothing happens behind the insulation. The concrete floors and cmu half walls have been painted with dry lock.

Great work, amazing details. Some clarification for which climate zone are you referring to would be extra useful.

I really love these vids. What are your thoughts about using Omni-block in the humid south for new construction/remodeling? Do you think it would still have moisture issues, even with the EPS foam sandwiched between the blocks?

Why not just install the rain screen on the outside?
The dimple Matt on the inside is also concerning where would the water go? or is it just for air to circulate? Then again, to circulate to where?

Right on great video. Masonry loves to wick moisture. Masonry needs a way to dry out and remove the moisture it wicks. I hate icf walls the membrane is only thing that keeps the moisture out. And most don't have anyway for masonry to dry out except rim joist. Which people usually spray foam. Smh. Did cmu block north wall with vermiculite cores, 4 inches of mineral wool batt and board , low perm vapor barrier 0.17 (“dry”) to as much as 3.8 perms (“wet”), 2 inch air gap, and 12 inch masonry veneer. Insulated piers and foundation. North wall will have lots of snow off the skillion roof. Making a snow berm in winter. With 6 foot frost depths and where I hit hard pack. To support weights of masonry heating appliances. Masonry stove, white oven, and 2 masonry heaters. And having timber frame need to dry it right.

Also never paint interior surfaces of below-grade blocks or water will get trapped in the block and degrade the concrete.

Yes! And don't install any 60-inch sinks there either! 36-inch is the perfect size! (Inside joke).

Thoughts on using Insofast as both insulation and a capillary break since it has channels on the back?

For a garage application where any condensation may be acceptable on the floor inside the space, could you replace the drain tile & sump pump in favor of an interior weep screen, and terminate the interior insulation a few inches above the floor inside the space?

if you didn't want to add perforated pipe or any moisture control below slab, could you just use a rainscreen system on the walls for some air flow and then tape it all with rigid insulation as a more cost effective solution?

Can a person put the seal then dimple mat/alternative on the outside, then insulate and side over that to keep moisture off the walls and not lose interior space if you are in a place like Florida for example. ...
