I got to use my Fiskar's the other day. What an awesome tool! I can pick up 2 logs at a time without bending over! One works better than the other but I'm hoping the more the one gets used it'll loosen up and grab/hook better. When the hooks open, they don't come to a closed rest position they stay spread. I greased the joints a bit, hopefully that'll help. Overall awesome tools, I wish I woulda known about these 12 years ago!
Can’t agree with you more! Log tongs are a guys best friend in the woodyard and the best part is they save your back. What you may want to do so the tongs close freely is take a screw driver and lightly try to separate the two halves of the tongs where the rivet holds them together. Mine were stiff as well. Love your attitude. Saw you via in the woodyard Chris. You're the type of guy who says more with less words, thats a talent imo. I have a couple of Stihl tongs, living in Norway. Although not as effective as log ox, i often use them to roll logs over in the woods, when theres snow and roots and other obstacles that wont let me roll it with a push. Anyway keep going, love your content.
Aidin, what I found is pretty much any log tong is worth it’s weight in gold for saving your back when picking up wood. I’d love to visit Norway, Sweden, Germany and Finland some day and see how you guys do your logging/firewood and equipment you use. These are nice, not just for your back but for the big ass giant wolf spiders that like to hide in the pile of logs in Ohio, I was having trouble picking up logs and having to be face to face with these giant black spiders crawling up my arm. My cheap ass Dad refused to get me these so I quit. Lol

Thanks for the great video, Tony. I just found videos on these back saving tools a few days ago. I'm cultivating more of my own wood from my property, and I'd just seen an older video that you did on these tools. I was looking for the Bahco tongs, and instead ordered the Ochsenkopf Log Tongs. I hope it was a good decision, the Bahco tongs were going to take until the end of the month to get, the Ochsenkopf are supposed to be here in 3 days.
Mike you made a great choice on the Ochsenkopf products. They are a really good company. Though I don’t have a set, multiple viewers have contacted me about how good they are. I had a concern about the cork handle lasting and was told by people that have had it for yers with no problem. The one drawback I was told is the cork gets slippery when wet. Tony, I enjoyed watching you pinch your logs! After watching your video I ordered my second pair of Ochsenkopf tongs. Used both at the same today loading rounds onto the AXIS. It was double the pleasure. For me personally I don’t care very much for my LogOx. It feels a little heavy. Thanks for the great video. Looking forward to PB ….
thanks tony, I was about to buy a pulp hook and i'm glad i didn't I am in ontario and all we deal with is hardwood.I will look at the hammer style hook. I have the longer one by Husqvarna works great but it would be nice for a shorter one.

I use a Husqvarna tong the larger one and a sweedish axe. Sweedish because of the blade profile. I tape up the handle with skateboard tape. With a 15-24 inch handle. I can grab any height and not bend over, spiking the ends. Then flick and throw
Though I haven’t used the Husqvarna log tongs I have picked them up at the logging shows and it feels very similar to the Bahco. love the idea of the skateboard tape on the axe handle, gonna have to try that one. thanks for sharing, watching and commenting. 👍TCT
I owe you one Tony. After decades without tongs ( have a pulp hook and hookaroon ) I took your advice and got the Bahco log tongs. I harvest a good 6-7 cords each year for two Jotul stoves for 99% heating here in Maine. What a tool for an aging back ! Why didn't you tell me about this years ago 😢
Ann, I’m glad you enjoy the Bahco tongs, they are definitely one of my favorites. However I’ve been trying other brands and keep switching off. Now I’m not sure which is my most favorite. When you master the pulp hook (both the throw and the flick) you will see what its all about, for me after a chainsaw and an axe that is the most important wood tool in my opinion

Hi Tony - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. My two Husky log tongs have been indispensable over the past 10 years. I am constantly surprised by how few log hounds use them. It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the historic relevance of today, Sept 11, both past and current, to both sides of the Atlantic.
I have the Fiskars pair you have there and a Husqvarna pair just alike and like them all. About 100-150cm long logs: the tong in one end and the hook at the other...
Pretty sure the last two "yardsale" tongs were never intended to be used by hand. Those are used for skidding and/or possibly lifting tongs for moving logs around with a tractor or other piece of equipment.

Curious about thoughts you might have regarding Mr. Carlson . These tools seem like a great idea, Yet in real life, I've never seen Chris using one. 🤔 Care to speculate ? In fact of the half dozen wood yarding channels I watch , None use them , What is the downside? They can't be cost prohibitive, ( even for Chris 😅😅 ) Again Just seems a little strange
Jean ironically a lot of people still don’t know about log tongs. As far as Chris, he’s a no frills kind of guy and though he’s used my tongs he prefers to just bend over and pick up a block of wood. If you look at Dan from Back 40 or Andrew from Eastonmade channels you see them using the LogOx. I know a lot of people are using log tongs but not sure why they’re not showing them. In the next couple of weeks you’ll see a new log tong I’ll be reviewing called “Pinch-a-log”. All I know is I wouldn’t be without my log tongs,. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍TCT
My father was a blacksmith. He liked to cut wood, and he made a heavy pickeroon from a railroad pick. He cut off one end of the pick and shortened the other end, drawing it out to a sharp point. I still use it for unloading logs from my pickup. It's heavy and the bit really digs into a log, letting me pull it right out of the truck easily. The handle is the traditional railroad pick handle.

Ahhh.. Tony and his tools! Tony you have so many I would struggle with which one to use🤣 I in think I’m with you on the favorite. The Baaco seemed to work the best. Fiskars would be the second choice for me. 👍🏻👍🏻-TOA
When I cut wood with friends and let them try all the log tongs we all have different preferences. I typically use whatever I have with me and that will be the Bahco, LogOx and Pinch-a-Log. Currently Fiskars doesn’t offer the log tong in a 11” or 12” so their current 9” is to small. All three I’ve mentioned are built like tanks and work well.👍TCT
Now that’s a bummer. I had the same issue when I bought mine and had to wait a couple months. They never seem to have enough inventory on hand. You can switch to the Husqvarna brand which might be easier to find. Appreciate you watching and commenting.👍TCT
@@TonysCoolTools I ended up ordering a fiskars hookaroon. I have 5+ acres with downed branches and smaller trees everywhere. As a kid I worked in a wood pile but never heard of these tools.
Hi Tony: I had to go back and watch your video. I’m going to be cutting 6 cords of 24”L x 12” to 18” diameter rounds. Then I need to stack them. I’m looking at using pulp hooks, hookeroon, and the Pinch a Log. I have a couple of other options. Roll and pull with hookeroon. Or use the log grapple trailer to lift the rounds in place. The log grapple trailer might be the best option. It certainly is the lowest risk option.
The thing I like about my Log Ox, is that it's designed like a peavey or cant hook, rather than pincers. Thus with or without the extension attached, you can use it to roll a log laying on the ground. It'll pick up a surprisingly big round, and is well balanced, so you can just hold it at your side as you walk it over to your truck or trailer. Occasionally, I'll have to grab the shaft with my other hand to help lift heavy ones onto my tailgate- but it sure beats bending over, and picking them up off the ground. The tongs do have an advantage, in that you can drag logs and heavy rounds from the end. A Log Ox simply isn't designed for that. The Ox is also less efficient at picking up small rounds or splits. (it likes weight to help it get a firm grip, as it only has one point. ) So get both! lol.
You are right, all the different device’s that pick up wood have pros and cons. The LogOx seems to be the Swiss Army knife of tongs being able to multi task. Appreciate you taking your time with the detailed explanation. Thanks for watching 👍
Great show Tony, very informative. Thank you. I grew up using pick-a-roons and wood hooks. Wood or Pulp hooks are made for 4ft wood. We used to buck the logs into 4ft sections and then they were loaded onto a trailer or the truck. The Pulp hook is slightly put into to end of the log and stood up. Then you hold that end with your free hand and stick the Pulp hook into the lower end and pick up the log and put it on the trailer. If the hook was in a little too far, you can just flick your wrist when you throw the log and it comes out. It was hard work back then, not a lot of hydraulic loaders around, but people still needed wood.
That’s the way I saw them used was picking up 4’ sections and that makes total sense and is very easy to do and helpful. Thanks for your detailed explanation, appreciate you watching 👍
I have the Husqvarna brand!! I use mine for picking up chunks of firewood and also for piling pulpwood if I am hand cutting a timber sale!! There a real back saver!! Stay safe my friend

Tony, great demonstration on the log tongs! I never had one, but after this wonderful video, this would definitely be a back saver for sure. I would cut rounds then stack on pallets until i was ready to split. You come home and the lower back hurt. This would help alleviate that. Thanks again for this video!

I've been looking at getting the Bahco tong with the extended handle...seems they're sold out on them quite frequently. Those two handle metal tongs we have alot of Ice tongs like that here that Amish use when cutting ice in winter on the ponds.

Great video, Tony. Pretty impressive how those tongs held that log at a crazy angle. My wife and I have the Pinch-A-Log tongs and we love them. I can easily carry a 24 inch long piece of firewood with a point in each end, tight up again my body. It is also easy to throw logs and drag limbs with these tongs. Their customer service was terrific as well.

Harry you won’t be disappointed with the Bahco tongs. Large companies like you work for have a difficult time working with many divisions. Fiskars owns Gerber knife company, yet it was a nightmare trying to buy a Gerber product. Thanks for watching 👍

Wow. I bought some a while ago and used them extensively yesterday. They are amazing labor savers. Coupled with my Wolfe Ridge splitter I can split wood with almost no effort. Thanks for the reviews.

Gregory, your accident was actually a stroke of luck. You’re right the Bahco are really good log tongs. Have you tried the LogOX? They are different but extremely comfortable to carry large blocks to splitter or stacking. Though I haven’t tried them yet there is a company called Reipal and sell model 202 Firewood Timber Logging Tong II from Sweden 24" long 10" Jaw open. I’m trying to get a set to review but they look well made. @@TonysCoolTools I looked at the LogOX - I question it’s weight - to my way of thinking you have to balance off the tool weight vs the use of it - I run a Hakki firewood processor so I am concerned about moving 5-10 inch logs. Thanks for the review Tony, its a shame you didn't have the Husqvarna ones to test as well as they didn't get much of a mention in the video you did with Chris. My Dad has the Bahco ones like yours, and I have the Husky ones, and the Bahco ones are far superior. I think the reason is mainly down to where the rear pincer/leg pivots, check them out side by side (5:22). The Bahco rear leg pivot is orientated at the top, the Husky at the bottom. The Husky ones never seem to grab as naturally or easily. Something perhaps worth considering for you or others anyway! Cheers
Ironically I was at the Paul Bunyan show and was going to pick up a Husqvarna log tong and forgot. I pretty sure your are right about the rear leg. Great Video Tony- I use the Log Ox for loading large rounds (Over 12 inches) in to the Top Dog firewood bucket. Then I lift the rounds up to the splitter to waist height, once split I put the firewood back into the bucket or throw it right in the trailer. I have the Fiskars tongs, but I haven’t used them much.
Richard sounds like you have a great system. The Fiskars LT6 are to small for most of the logs I pick up. I hope one day they introduce a larger version to the US market. Looks like the LogOx works for you. Thanks for watching 👍

The tongs where you used both hands to use and pick up a small piece. Them tongs are used to drag logs out the woods. I had a big set like you and I run a quarter inch cable thru it in a loop and once you pull on the cable it would tighten the tongs and make it bite deeper in to the wood. Nice video. 25 years ago I used a pulp hook for a few years and it was so awesome. I was pretty good at throwing with it. But in the beginning my knees paid the price.
Matthew there is definitely a trick to flicking your wrist and towing a piece of wood with a pulp hook. The other thing I noticed was the pulp hook works much better on softwood then hardwood. Appreciate you watching and commenting 👍TCT

Oh I have used the Husqvarna tongs and you are right they are very good as well as economical. The only reason I chose the Bahco 10 years ago is I didn’t know Husqvarna made tongs. I also like the Bahco paint or powder coated finish and they come in 3 different sizes. Thanks for watching 👍
Mark i use my pulp hook for two reason. First like you I pick up long limb-wood , the other use is when I have to load a large round of wood on a hand truck it’s handy to hook top of round and pull back on hand truck. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
I have a log ox. It’s a good tool I use it mainly for lifting logs to buck. Also got the the hookaroon piece for it. I use it for unloading the truck. The 30 inch handle little to short for me. Stay cool out there.

You're the type of guy who says more with less words, thats a talent imo. I have a couple of Stihl tongs, living in Norway. Although not as effective as log ox, i often use them to roll logs over in the woods, when theres snow and roots and other obstacles that wont let me roll it with a push. Anyway keep going, love your content.
Aidin, what I found is pretty much any log tong is worth it’s weight in gold for saving your back when picking up wood. I’d love to visit Norway, Sweden, Germany and Finland some day and see how you guys do your logging/firewood and equipment you use. You are so far in advance when it comes to training of chainsaw skills.

These are nice, not just for your back but for the big ass giant wolf spiders that like to hide in the pile of logs in Ohio, I was having trouble picking up logs and having to be face to face with these giant black spiders crawling up my arm. My cheap ass Dad refused to get me these so I quit. Lol
Now spiders and snakes are no fun, they typically share the heck out of me.

Thanks for the great video, Tony. I just found videos on these back saving tools a few days ago. I'm cultivating more of my own wood from my property, and I'd just seen an older video that you did on these tools. I was looking for the Bahco tongs, and instead ordered the Ochsenkopf Log Tongs. I hope it was a good decision, the Bahco tongs were going to take until the end of the month to get, the Ochsenkopf are supposed to be here in 3 days.
Mike you made a great choice on the Ochsenkopf products. They are a really good company. Though I don’t have a set, multiple viewers have contacted me about how good they are. I had a concern about the cork handle lasting and was told by people that have had it for yers with no problem. The one drawback I was told is the cork gets slippery when wet.
I’m sure you and your back will enjoy your new tongs.

thanks tony, I was about to buy a pulp hook and i'm glad i didn't I am in ontario and all we deal with is hardwood.I will look at the hammer style hook. I have the longer one by Husqvarna works great but it would be nice for a shorter one.

I use a Husqvarna tong the larger one and a sweedish axe. Sweedish because of the blade profile. I tape up the handle with skateboard tape. With a 15-24 inch handle. I can grab any height and not bend over, spiking the ends. Then flick and throw
Though I haven’t used the Husqvarna log tongs I have picked them up at the logging shows and it feels very similar to the Bahco.
love the idea of the skateboard tape on the axe handle, gonna have to try that one.

I owe you one Tony. After decades without tongs ( have a pulp hook and hookaroon ) I took your advice and got the Bahco log tongs. I harvest a good 6-7 cords each year for two Jotul stoves for 99% heating here in Maine. What a tool for an aging back ! Why didn't you tell me about this years ago 😢

When you master the pulp hook (both the throw and the flick) you will see what its all about, for me after a chainsaw and an axe that is the most important wood tool in my opinion

Hi Tony - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. My two Husky log tongs have been indispensable over the past 10 years. I am constantly surprised by how few log hounds use them. It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the historic relevance of today, Sept 11, both past and current, to both sides of the Atlantic.

Pretty sure the last two "yardsale" tongs were never intended to be used by hand. Those are used for skidding and/or possibly lifting tongs for moving logs around with a tractor or other piece of equipment.
Jeffery my two garage sale tools were actually tongs used in the early 1900 to carry/move blocks of ice.

Jean ironically a lot of people still don’t know about log tongs. As far as Chris, he’s a no frills kind of guy and though he’s used my tongs he prefers to just bend over and pick up a block of wood.
If you look at Dan from Back 40 or Andrew from Eastonmade channels you see them using the LogOx. I know a lot of people are using log tongs but not sure why they’re not showing them.
In the next couple of weeks you’ll see a new log tong I’ll be reviewing called “Pinch-a-log”.
All I know is I wouldn’t be without my log tongs,.

My father was a blacksmith. He liked to cut wood, and he made a heavy pickeroon from a railroad pick. He cut off one end of the pick and shortened the other end, drawing it out to a sharp point. I still use it for unloading logs from my pickup. It's heavy and the bit really digs into a log, letting me pull it right out of the truck easily. The handle is the traditional railroad pick handle.
Roberto, railroad spikes are awesome steel to work with, I’m sure you can put a wicked point on the tip that would stick in the hardest of wood.

So, at the end of the day, which brand do you like the best and would recommend? I couldn't tell if it was the Bahco, Fiskar or another brand.
When I cut wood with friends and let them try all the log tongs we all have different preferences. I typically use whatever I have with me and that will be the Bahco, LogOx and Pinch-a-Log. Currently Fiskars doesn’t offer the log tong in a 11” or 12” so their current 9” is to small. All three I’ve mentioned are built like tanks and work well.👍TCT

@@TonysCoolTools I ended up ordering a fiskars hookaroon. I have 5+ acres with downed branches and smaller trees everywhere. As a kid I worked in a wood pile but never heard of these tools.
Hi Tony: I had to go back and watch your video. I’m going to be cutting 6 cords of 24”L x 12” to 18” diameter rounds. Then I need to stack them. I’m looking at using pulp hooks, hookeroon, and the Pinch a Log. I have a couple of other options. Roll and pull with hookeroon. Or use the log grapple trailer to lift the rounds in place. The log grapple trailer might be the best option. It certainly is the lowest risk option.
The thing I like about my Log Ox, is that it's designed like a peavey or cant hook, rather than pincers. Thus with or without the extension attached, you can use it to roll a log laying on the ground. It'll pick up a surprisingly big round, and is well balanced, so you can just hold it at your side as you walk it over to your truck or trailer. Occasionally, I'll have to grab the shaft with my other hand to help lift heavy ones onto my tailgate- but it sure beats bending over, and picking them up off the ground.
The tongs do have an advantage, in that you can drag logs and heavy rounds from the end. A Log Ox simply isn't designed for that. The Ox is also less efficient at picking up small rounds or splits. (it likes weight to help it get a firm grip, as it only has one point. ) So get both! lol.
You are right, all the different device’s that pick up wood have pros and cons. The LogOx seems to be the Swiss Army knife of tongs being able to multi task. Appreciate you taking your time with the detailed explanation.

I grew up using pick-a-roons and wood hooks. Wood or Pulp hooks are made for 4ft wood. We used to buck the logs into 4ft sections and then they were loaded onto a trailer or the truck.
The Pulp hook is slightly put into to end of the log and stood up. Then you hold that end with your free hand and stick the Pulp hook into the lower end and pick up the log and put it on the trailer. If the hook was in a little too far, you can just flick your wrist when you throw the log and it comes out. It was hard work back then, not a lot of hydraulic loaders around, but people still needed wood.
That’s the way I saw them used was picking up 4’ sections and that makes total sense and is very easy to do and helpful. Thanks for your detailed explanation, appreciate you watching 👍
I have the Husqvarna brand!! I use mine for picking up chunks of firewood and also for piling pulpwood if I am hand cutting a timber sale!! There a real back saver!! Stay safe my friend

I've been looking at getting the Bahco tong with the extended handle...seems they're sold out on them quite frequently. Those two handle metal tongs we have alot of Ice tongs like that here that Amish use when cutting ice in winter on the ponds.

Great video, Tony. Pretty impressive how those tongs held that log at a crazy angle. My wife and I have the Pinch-A-Log tongs and we love them. I can easily carry a 24 inch long piece of firewood with a point in each end, tight up again my body. It is also easy to throw logs and drag limbs with these tongs. Their customer service was terrific as well.

I’ve got both a solid handled tongs and a cork handled tongs. The cork is comfy but in the wet, the cork becomes slippery.

I have the large Bahco - bought them by accident and never regretted it - nothing really compares to them.
Gregory, your accident was actually a stroke of luck.
You’re right the Bahco are really good log tongs. Have you tried the LogOX? They are different but extremely comfortable to carry large blocks to splitter or stacking.
Though I haven’t tried them yet there is a company called Reipal and sell model 202 Firewood Timber Logging Tong II from Sweden 24" long 10" Jaw open. I’m trying to get a set to review but they look well made.

@@TonysCoolTools I looked at the LogOX - I question it’s weight - to my way of thinking you have to balance off the tool weight vs the use of it - I run a Hakki firewood processor so I am concerned about moving 5-10 inch logs. Thanks for the review Tony, its a shame you didn't have the Husqvarna ones to test as well as they didn't get much of a mention in the video you did with Chris. My Dad has the Bahco ones like yours, and I have the Husky ones, and the Bahco ones are far superior. I think the reason is mainly down to where the rear pincer/leg pivots, check them out side by side (5:22). The Bahco rear leg pivot is orientated at the top, the Husky at the bottom. The Husky ones never seem to grab as naturally or easily. Something perhaps worth considering for you or others anyway! Cheers
Ironically I was at the Paul Bunyan show and was going to pick up a Husqvarna log tong and forgot. I pretty sure your are right about the rear leg. The other noteworthy item to mention is the Bahco tips are extremely sharp and pick up bucked up firewood even when frozen.

Great Video Tony- I use the Log Ox for loading large rounds (Over 12 inches) in to the Top Dog firewood bucket. Then I lift the rounds up to the splitter to waist height, once split I put the firewood back into the bucket or throw it right in the trailer. I have the Fiskars tongs, but I haven’t used them much.
Richard sounds like you have a great system. The Fiskars LT6 are to small for most of the logs I pick up. I hope one day they introduce a larger version to the US market. Looks like the LogOx works for you. Thanks for watching 👍

The tongs where you used both hands to use and pick up a small piece. Them tongs are used to drag logs out the woods. I had a big set like you and I run a quarter inch cable thru it in a loop and once you pull on the cable it would tighten the tongs and make it bite deeper in to the wood. Nice video. 25 years ago I used a pulp hook for a few years and it was so awesome. I was pretty good at throwing with it. But in the beginning my knees paid the price.
Matthew there is definitely a trick to flicking your wrist and towing a piece of wood with a pulp hook.
The other thing I noticed was the pulp hook works much better on softwood then hardwood.

Our husky ones are awesome, and were the most budget friendly around us. All I had to do was take a flat file and sharpen them up a bit.

@@earthandbloom I was at the Logging show in Green Bay WI on Friday and looked at picking up a set since they had a show special but there was no country of origin I could see, but I believe they are manufactured in Sweden

Husqvarna make very good log tongs, you must try them. Great video!
Oh I have used the Husqvarna tongs and you are right they are very good as well as economical. The only reason I chose the Bahco 10 years ago is I didn’t know Husqvarna made tongs. I also like the Bahco paint or powder coated finish and they come in 3 different sizes. Thanks for watching 👍

I love the Pulp hook for longer boiler wood, rarely use it for 16s.
Mark i use my pulp hook for two reason. First like you I pick up long limb-wood , the other use is when I have to load a large round of wood on a hand truck it’s handy to hook top of round and pull back on hand truck. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
I have a log ox. It’s a good tool I use it mainly for lifting logs to buck. Also got the the hookaroon piece for it. I use it for unloading the truck. The 30 inch handle little to short for me. Stay cool out there.

I have the Pinch A Log tongs. They work great. Grab the ends of your 16” cut rounds to carry.

@@TonysCoolTools I am going to get 20 tons of birch wood as logs in a couple of weeks and so from my past experiences, I need to get some right tools to save energy, especially when talking about carrying logs or cut wood. I found your comparison of log tongs very useful.
Nett I will be doing a review in a couple of weeks on another back saving tool called the LogJaw. It also is a back saving tool that help with moving logs. 👍TCT
@@TonysCoolTools In the end, everybody needs to find and learn the tools that serve him best. I did 15t last year only with an electrical chainsaw and a gränsfors bruks splitting axe. Especially my back will say thanks when I upgrade to a better toolstack for lifting and preparing the cutting process... Looking forward to your logjaw feature. Cheers!
