I love how he keeps in his Cornelius character... keeping his facial features alive with crinkling his nose, etc. That's what made the make-up work so well.
Yes. If this was 1974 then he would be playing Galen on the Planet of the Apes TV series. There were subtle differences in the makeup between each of the three ape characters that Roddy McDowell played; Cornelius, Caesar and Galen. I know this makeup isn't Cornelius because the hair is too short.

My father couldn't figure out why until i told him during a commercial!!!!!!!!!! He understood and had to explain to her that it wasn't comedy but serious science fiction!!!!!!!!! She finally understood!!!!!!!!!!!!! 👌 that's ALL for now!!-!!!!!!!!!!
If only you knew how ignorant your comment is. Unless you're watching obvious sci-fi and fantasy elements you'll only notice bad CGI. Lots of time, especially on TV you'll watch a scene and you'll have no clue at all it's full of CGI. Your comment is stereotypical and ignorant as hell. The latest Planet of the Apes movies have superior ape looks, with much more expressive emotinal faces where you can actually see the acting come through. Roddy McDowell was one of the very, very few people in Hollywood history who never made an enemy. Everyone loved him dearly. Even today, he's missed.
I dont believe that there is a person on earth who never had an enemy...geese
@@wirelessone2986 Well ok then, that's just your opinion isn't it? He was loved by many, why can't you just accept that? Why do you have to be the Debbie Downer? Because you just can't fathom someone being a nice person in this day and age? Sad way to live your life.
@@wirelessone2986 Geese aren't really enemies. I know they can be aggressive towards humans, but that's because they're very protective of their young.
@@drmattathias This comment made my day. Just what the doctor ordered.
Love this to this day. Such a great bit. Poor guy looks like he was starting to sweat under that prosthetic. Such a pro.
I loved Roddy McDowall ever since I was a kid, it was nice to hear what a kind and gentle man he was, there doesn't seem to me to be too many of those left. 😚💗
Not in Hollywood, anyway.
don't know how I stumbled across this, but am very glad I did. this skit is precious in very many ways.
The look on her face when Roddy sings "We will raise a family . " 😂
Watching these old vintage clips from the old days ..really makes happy n sad missing the old innocent simpler happy times growing up and long long long ago...compared to today at the brink of WW3.
First movie I ever saw with Roddy in it was “How Green is My Valley”. He was a great child actor that successfully became a great adult actor.
Fantastic Carols reactions are great, what a trouper he was
“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams.
How I loved the Carol Burnett show. God bless them both. 😊👍
Carol Burnett had three of my most favorite childhood shows under her belt and this was one of them. I also love Roddy and everything he did especially the planet of the apes movies. Me and my dad didn't miss a single one.
That makeup is actually very good. On close-ups, you can see some 'imperfections,' sure, but on the wide shots, it's very convincing.
Makeup was and is still great even today the eyes are his and the mouth moves. Just great even now.
Her facial expressions and pauses are pure genius.

You see that dress ? Elegant and beautiful. When you have talent you don’t have to expose your body.
Carol Burnette is so pretty!
CAROL IS FANTASTIC. 🇺🇸💎🇺🇸👀. 2022. 👍
I love UA-cam for this and keeping such highlights of Entertainment.
Two amazing entertainers. Rest in Paradise, Mr. McDowall. You are missed.
I remember the night this show went on the air!!!!!!!! I WAS staying with my 👵 at time!!!!!!!!!! She WAS watching it TOO!!!!!! She had never seen one of the 🎥!!!!!!! WHEN she first saw him in THAT wonderful makeup her eyes got as big as a quarter and she started laughing so hard it WAS almost sceaming!!!!!!!!!!!! Watching her reaction WAS so very priceless IT became one of MY favorite cherished and vivid memories of my childhood!!!!!!!!! I had seen THE first three movies at the Drive-In theater in our town with MY father!!!!!!!!! We loved them!!!!!!!!!!! But my 👵 reaction WAS halarious!!!!!!!!!!!! We laughed together during the entire dance routine!!!!!!!!! The first movie WAS on 📺 sometime later and i watched IT with and my father and her and she laughed at almost the entire movie because she thought it was a comedy!!!!!!!!!!!
That's why we all prefer makeup instead of crappy CGI
If only you knew how ignorant your comment is. Unless you're watching obvious sci-fi and fantasy elements you'll only notice bad CGI. Lots of time, especially on TV you'll watch a scene and you'll have no clue at all it's full of CGI. Your comment is stereotypical and ignorant as hell. The latest Planet of the Apes movies have superior ape looks, with much more expressive emotinal faces where you can actually see the acting come through. There's a reason Andy Serkis earned an oscar for his work fool.
Blackface? Why haven't the SJWs had a fit over this?
Budgets, baby. ;) Btw, if you watch sci-fi tv show with bad CGI & you will notice but more time watch and you won't be notice it. :3
No matter how good or bad real will always be real, and no matter how real cgi appears it will always be fake. 😉
@@darrinpennington Exactly. You said everything. Horror movies suffer a lot from the use of CGI.
This is wonderful! I remember this! 😊 I really loved him. Phenomenal actor & so handsome. I was sad when he passed away.
Man was her show was funny, remember watching it live!!
Till today it is a perfect, effective make up. This sequence is pure gold. I've always wanted to see how this ape make up was made.
We miss you Roddy. Amazing actor.
Greetings from Brasil
Classic Carol Burnett at it's finest, featuring Roddy Mc Dowell.😆🇺🇸🦅🗽
Still one of the greatest shows ever broadcast! The Carol Burnett Show is STILL hilarious!
Hilarious. Both brilliant and worthy of respect.
Amazing Carol! A true artist in every way!🌹❤️
He could have won an Oscar for Cleopatra but somebody screwed up his nomination. He was filed for Best Actor instead of supporting. So was disqualified.
Dude his speech in conquest of the planet of the apes should have landed him an Oscar back then.
He was the Augustus Ceasar until Brian Blessed in I, Claudius...
I'm old enough to remember a lot of these variety/skit shows. Carol Burnett's was the best. I'll give second place to the Sonny and Cher show.
I watched this as a 10 year old boy. He was my favorite actor!
I miss him! But we have his indeliable, wonderful work!
Roddy was always a delight. A lovely talent. May he rest in peace.
So awesome!!! Roddy was so wonderful. I was a POTA fanatic as a kid too. My grandparents took me to see the 1969 film when I was only 6 years old, and I still recall many of the scenes from that movie experience.
