    I love the idea of using old neckties for bias binding. Since the workplace is more casual in the US, there are SO MANY silk ties (as well as high-quality men’s dress shirts) at the thrift store, so reusing those ties as bias binding is an economical way to elevate the binding.
    Thanks for this tutorial. I’m upcycling a pre-made, unlined super-sized jacket into a coat dress, and I wanted to add a lining to make it look more elevated, but I couldn’t figure out how to add a lining to something that was already made. This gave me the info I need to do it. Thanks again!

    Your coat is fab! Re cost effective sewing - I first started sewing in my teens (in the 70s) and it was definitely much cheaper than RTW. I stopped sewing when it started to cost way more to make....and when my kids started to roll their eyes at 'mum made' clothes v designer labels. The internet has brought the price of fabrics down until they are so much more affordable. When I restarted clothes sewing last year I found a length of fabric (cupro) that I bought in the late 80s. It was 1.5m remnant and the price tag was still on it. It was £20 ($26)! I recently bought cupro for a shirt and it cost £3.50 a metre. Edit - oops forgot to say...fabulous tutorial!!
    Love the idea of using men's ties for binding.

      Yes! I love talking about the cost of sewing and it's so interesting to hear about the cost of fabric! That's crazy! Also, where did you just buy cupro for 3.5 a metre?!!

    As for future videos I love to watch how -to on how others construct specific patterns, tips and tricks on techniques, make plans for patterns matched to a fabric and then see the item completed on on a person to see how it moves. Not so into pattern collections or fabric stashes but do love to see how your sewing room works for you, things that I might be able to incorporate into my own space to improve it.

    Appreciate the tutorial Whitney! I am a grandmother and teaching myself to sew, just about 2 years now. I have what you may say a champagne taste on a beer budget but I so love textiles and I find that I gravitate to high end fabrics and therefore want to make them well and also get the fit down. I am watching and learning from you so whatever you share will be gobbled up, ok, maybe I have Thanksgiving on my brain, but you know what I mean! Take care and by the way or as they do now, BTW, what is the cutting mat that you use. I really like the size. Also, I noticed that you have a gravity iron, do you like it? Thanks Whitney.

      Hi, Jorja! I must admit that I have the same affliction, champagne taste on a beer budget! I'm so glad you're enjoying the tutorials. I also love that you're teaching yourself to sew. To answer your questions, my cutting mat is a 36X72 gridded self healing cutting mat. I ordered it online and I can't remember where (I've had it for awhile). I will do some digging and get that information for you! You are also correct that I have a gravity fed iron and it's amazing. I got mine from Wawak.com and it's amazing. The steam output you get from the gravity fed is so superior to home irons! Thanks again, for watching!

    And I think there is a place for a conversation about how/why not to end up with fast fashion practices and negatives in self sewn wardrobes . I am spending much more money than I would in the fast fashion stores but I am trying only to sew clothes that I need now and will actually wear for many years. I am hiring a sewing teacher for help with expensive fabric and developing my sewing skill reconstructing my shabby worn clothes. My trial garments are from bedsheets, etc. I am aware that a lot of resources go into making a few meters of material and I don't want to waste the world to deck myself out. But it is hard...there are so many beautiful fabrics and interesting patterns!
    I'd be interested in other people's opinions.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  6 років тому

      Lynn, I love this and definitely think that there is room to talk about the waste in self sewn wardrobes as well. I, too, use old/second hand bedsheets for muslins (when I actually do one!). I also love that you're employing a sewing teacher for some higher sewing help. That's fantastic!

    i enjoyed watching this and it seems straightforward to follow, especially for a jacket. But unless the lining and facing are both lightweight, would this technique work with other types of clothing (tops, shirts, etc.)? or would I need to trim out some of the lining underneath?

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  3 місяці тому

      It would be a bit different for lining tops, dresses, etc. For those, I basically sew up an identical item to the outer layer and then sew them together at the neck (and possibly armhole if the garment is sleeveless). I like to leave the lining at least 1" shorter than the outer. I have some other videos on how to line pants and dresses if you're interested! They are in the playlist section of my channel and under Tutorials and/or Sew alongs.

    What do you use for magnets? That's is a big cutting board? Where do you find that for rotary cutter. I was given a old wool cape, from France. I would like to line it. Should I buy a cape pattern and use the big tissue? Should I cut it on bias, the cape is in 4 huge pieces. Also it has several small holes. How do I fix those? I wanted to put cozy flannel inside. It's great. It falls lovey over the shoulders.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  Рік тому

      Those are actually 2" washers that I use as pattern weights to keep everything from shifting while I'm cutting out. The cutting mat came from QuiltersRule.com and its fabulous. I've had it almost 8 years and it is amazing. I would definitely recommend looking there. As far as lining an existing garment, I would do a "rub off" of the original garment. While it's not hard, it's a bit hard to describe in writing. There is a class on Craftsy that shows you how to make patterns from existing garments: www.craftsy.com/class/pattern-drafting-from-ready-to-wear/ . I would just draft a second cape and use that for the lining. I hope that helps!

    Thanks so much for showing your cheater way - I'd like to try this when I do the Anna coat in the future. I'm new to lining coats but have recently bagged out a coat and jacket so getting to know the basics. I've been getting stuck with the lower corners where the lining meets the facing - have been looking up stuff and even see it named as the "tricky corner" . I also often struggle with sleeve heads and you mentioned you crimp the sleeve head - is this something your sewing machine can do? Would love to see your tie bias binding tutorial in future. Thanks again for all the work you put into your vlogs.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  6 років тому

      Yes, the corners can be a bit tricky. I was trying to film how I do those, but was not successful. I can't tell you how many times I pulled things inside out and back again when I was learning to bag the lining. It's really a practice makes perfect skill. I will say, that when sewing it by machine fails, there is always the hand sewing stand by!
      As far as crimpling the sleeve, it's just a way of scrunching the fabric as you sew a line of stitching inside the seam allowance. It takes the place of putting in easing stitches and helps to set the sleeve in without pins (or very little pins. I will use about 3 when setting my sleeves). You can do it on any machine. It's a Janet Prey (Islander Sewing Systems) trick that I learned from a class of hers and I've never looked back! I will say, it works better on thinner fabric than thicker!

    • @robynjury4403
      @robynjury4403 6 років тому

      Oh my gosh - I've just watch a clip of Janet Pray easing in a sleeve on the flat with no pins in about 4 mins - I'm sure this needs lots of practice but something to try! Thanks for sharing this technique, sleeve setting is my nemesis!

    Hi! Thanks so much! You've given me the confidence to make a coat that otherwise had to be made out of another fabric than wool. Can I ask you what purpose is the binding for? (Other coats I've made haven't needed it) Thanks!

    HI!! I was wondering, I've been given a fur coat, I need to do a lining. There is no lining inside the coat. So how do I make my own pattern?

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  2 роки тому +1

      You're going to need to do a rub off of the body of the coat. This sounds hard, but it's not too bad. There is a fabulous class on Craftsy for just such a thing. You'll have to buy the class or a membership to view it, but last I checked the yearly memberships were really inexpensive!
