I want to make this with a different type of yarn. How do I figure that out😂

Just use whatever hook matches the yarn, and otherwise follow the pattern as written! :)

I'd like to try this with a #4 weight yarn, and would like my first rectangle to be smaller than the pattern. If I made my first rectangle with 12 DC and 3 rows, and followed your formula, would could I achieve the same results?

It depends on your gauge - there is a lot of info in the writeup on the pattern that should help you plan your blanket: www.mooglyblog.com/easy-rectangle-log-cabin-blanket/
