  • As drummer for the Foo Fighters for over 20 years, Taylor Hawkins has drummed his way through everything from Reading & Leeds Festival, to Radio 1 Live Lounges to sell out stadium shows.
But what does it take to become a drummer? What inspires someone to pick up a pair of drumsticks in the first place? And just how important is the drummer to a band?
In this programme, Taylor gives us a guided tour of his drum kit, talking to Radio 6 Music's Steve Lamacq about his childhood, his influences, his favourite drum loops, and what it’s like drumming with both Alanis Morissette & Dave Grohl.

      Peter Clark: Yes. 👍
He’s just some fella. Even still.
Too many drummers these days overdo everything.
      Ego. And playing.
      Taylor is ace.
      Doesn’t have ego issues
      Despite the success.
And he can play hard for hours and hours.
      His stamina is legendary.

Started really going back and listening to their songs with a bigger appreciation. Before that as mentioned I didn't even know who their drummer (Tay) was. Just knew their songs and Dave.

The drug dealer is getting famous because he sell it for like a thousand to Taylor, and the real price is less than a dolar for a single dose. Taylor talking about his then 12 year old son at around 10:23 - "he's good at drums, but he doesn't really care that much about it... he can play... but I'm like if you wanna learn how to play you have to play a song"... having just watched the now-16 Shane absolutely rock "My Hero" at Taylor's memorial concert on stage at Wembley... I think it's safe to say he did, and I'm sure Taylor would have been super proud.

Great interview, great stories, sad for him to leave so soon. He was our neighbor when my son Ian Harrower was in grade school. We lived on Mountain View Drive in Laguna Beach. Every day after school, my son would walk home, and Taylor would be in his garage playing drums (circa 1985-86), and he would stop and listen for awhile. Ian also went on to become quite a drummer as well. Music is the best way to express yourself and connect.

Loved every minute of this! As a 10 year old girl in 1957 who wanted to play drums, I was told no, you can have a piano. So I studied piano for years. But all I ever heard in songs and in concerts was the drums. In 2014, after finishing radiation treatment for breast cancer, I decided if not now, when. As luck would have it, a School of Rock was opening in my neighborhood and was taking adult students. In a week, I bought a DDrum kit for $400 and had lessons lined up. I found out that I was naturally in the pocket. Within months, I was in the adult performance group and in the following 4+ years played at venues around the city. It took me 57 years to do this. It is never too late. I will not be what I could have been had I started earlier, but it is still a hell of a lot of fun. I am now 72 and still playing as much as I can, even though I am no longer in a band. (Fell last year, broke my hand, took a long time to heal, played with one hand for awhile, got replaced, blah blah blah.) Thank you for this great interview, masterclass, whatever you call it! It has energized me! Play as much as you can, play songs, rock on!

When I first started learning how to play the drums my teacher told me the drums are one of the easiest instruments to pick up but one of the hardest to master and that's just playing on your own. If you are playing in a band it becomes far more difficult. Unless people play instruments themselves most people overlook the drummer because they are often overlooked by the guitarists or whatever.

I haven't felt this way for a musician since Freddie Mercury passed away. Lost and heavy hearted. I started to listen to them only last year, in the second half of March during a hard time for my family, Walk was always in my ears... "Learning to walk again, I believe I've waited long enough"... I truly had some relief watching their videos and even had fun given the circumstances.
I also tried to play drums, totally spellbound by Taylor's drumming style but had to quit.
    Watching his smile now hurts...

Drop the bs with this school boy on drums and have your kid learn from Buddy Rich drumming. Buddy Rich may have been unedited and a jerk at times, but at least he was trained to hit the drums correctly and is innovative.

Fucking gut punch. The essence of drumming. His drumming with Alanis on her tours was crazy. He was pretty young, and just already was crushing it. He will be missed.

The Foo was the first concert I ever went to and it was the concert that got me hooked on going to them. I will forever remember that rainy night from Dave jamming out in his guitar chair to Taylor going hard on the drums. The Foo as well as Taylor will always hold a special place as being my first ever concert.

Every time he plays just a little groove, it’s so tight. You don’t want him to stop, because even the simplest beat he plays sounds like a masterpiece.
