Nk'Mip Cellars - Osoyoos

In this video, we talk to Canada's first native winemaker Justin Hall about his dedication to Nk'Mip Cellars in Osoyoos, British Columbia. The winery is located within the Spirit Ridge Resort in the town of Osoyoos, British Columbia. The winery was conceived of and is owned by the Osoyoos Indian Band, of which Hall is an elder. In the course of our visit with Hall, we talked about garrigue, a French term that is used to describe a flavour in wine that is attributed to the fragrant plants growing in that country. Anthony Gismondi identified a similar but unique herbaceous flavour in the South Okanagan wines and he asked Hall if there might be a word similar to garrigue in the Okanagan language of his band. Hall said he would ask some of the elders, who immediately came back with a term we've used as the title for this film. Hall says the word in the intro as well as the definition. Hall has trained under head winemaker Randy Picton and now heads the white winemaking for Nk'Mip.
