      Intermittent no start, EPAS codes your electronic power assist steering, intermittent trans shifting issues, communication errors on the network, there's too many things to mention and it only takes half hour to do all these connections so it would be worth it to go ahead and get ahead of it now

      Reset it and next time put the negative from the charger on any ground that is right next to the battery, there are at least a couple. That way the ECU sees amps going into the battery and knows it has sufficient power to start. Don't ask why, there isn't a super computer in their, less computing power than the smart phone in your pocket. Anyways that's how they do it. Hope that helps!!

    Thanks for taking the time to make this video and share some valuable info. This helped me get pointed in the right direction to repair an intermittent backup camera problem on a 2013 F-150. I wanted to return the favor with a bit of info that I learned in the process of making this repair. After reworking a few ground connections as shown here, I started to see some info regarding the types of silicone that are available and that some should not be used with electrical connections. I had used Permatex RTV Silicone Clear Adhesive 80050, and after trying to find out whether or not it was acceptable for electrical connections and seeing multiple conflicting opinions, I decided to go straight to the manufacturer and called Permatex. The product rep that I spoke with was very knowledgable and helpful, he explained that there are 2 basic types of silicones, one is acetic and one is neutral. You do not want use an acetic silicone on electrical connections as it has an acidic solvent in it that helps it cure faster and can cause corrosion on the connection or wires. A neutral silicone would be ok, he suggested just putting a good coat of dielectric grease over everything once it is cleaned and put back together. Another option for a more durable coating would be to paint on some liquid electrical tape. Hope this helps someone, thanks again for the videos and keep them coming!

    For grounds like that use regular grease, not dielectric grease. The reason is that you want current to flow as much as possible and there's no chance for the grease to leak current to a positive source. You would want to use dielectric grease in a situation where positive and negative terminals are close, such as a bulb socket or harness connector, and you don't want any type of conductive grease to cause a short circuit. But for a situation like a frame connection all alone, a conductive grease or regular 'ol grease will only enhance that conductivity between the connector and the frame. If you use it sparingly and clean it off the external surfaces, then you can paint the metal to protect it from rust and seal off the electrical connection even more from moisture.

      100% right. A dielectric is defined as an insulating material or a very poor conductor of electric current.

      Using regular grease on a chassis ground is actually not recommended, because typical greases do not conduct electricity. Regular greases are typically made from petroleum products or silicone, which are insulators rather than conductors. Applying such greases to a grounding point could interfere with the electrical connection by introducing a resistive barrier between the metal surfaces.
      However, the idea of using a substance to prevent corrosion at grounding points is a good practice. Instead of regular grease, it's advisable to use a specific type of grease called dielectric grease or a product known as conductive grease:
      1. **Dielectric Grease**: Despite being a non-conductor, dielectric grease is beneficial for protecting the metal parts from moisture and corrosion. It is silicone-based and prevents moisture ingress, which can lead to corrosion and poor connections over time. Dielectric grease is applied around the connection rather than between the contact surfaces themselves. This helps in preserving the connection while protecting the surrounding area from environmental elements.
      2. **Conductive Grease**: For applications where electrical conductivity is crucial, such as on battery terminals or grounding points, conductive grease is appropriate. This type of grease contains materials that facilitate electrical conduction. When applying conductive grease, it’s important to ensure it is suitable for the specific type of electrical connection and environmental conditions.
      When improving grounding connections on a chassis or other electrical grounding systems, the goal is to maintain a solid metal-to-metal contact. If corrosion is a concern, consider cleaning the contact surfaces thoroughly, using conductive grease sparingly, and ensuring all connections are tight and secure. Always verify the type of product you are using to make sure it serves the purpose of enhancing electrical conductivity rather than inhibiting it.

      “Di-electric” is in the name Dielectric grease. Silicone based, it promotes conductivity only at 0.5 micron or less gap and becomes insulating when gap is greater. It is semi-conducting when electricity passes it. Normal grease is extremely bad for electrical use.

    Thanks for the reminder Ford Boss. I need to do that to my 2011 F350 Super Duty. My wife's 2014 Ford Escape bad grounding issue last year. We bought it and didn't know the battery was low already. So while driving on a sunny day the wipers went on full blast like a ghost turned it on. 1st Ford doesn't make it easy to get to that battery. I went to check the cables and the negative cable was corroded beyond repair. I soon learned that many sensor problems are due to low battery levels. New cable installed. I like your solution with the silicone after cleaning it up. Appreciate it.

Thought it was the battery and that fixed it for about a month.It stopped starting and I had power to the starter so I figured the starter finally died and I got a new one. This is commonly misunderstood. The grinding of the body is doing a disservice, look at the ground lug. The bolt head makes clean, wide contact with the lug, then the bolt becomes the conductive part. The bolt now conducts on the frame threads to make the electrical path, this why it’s always bolted to painted surfaces. Sometimes they have serrated washers that scratch through paint a little too. Grinding a big patch of bare metal around the lug is not so useful and makes the area more susceptible to rust. What you are right about is the need to protect the whole area from getting rusty. Silicone is not my preferred method but I won’t criticize it.

    • @FordBossMe
      @FordBossMe  2 роки тому +1

      So I use the silicone to keep away the moisture but it's not going to stop the bolt for making contact with the body of the vehicle I've been doing this for too long a lot of people say that it's an insulator but that's more for connectors not so much when you're putting a big bolt into a piece of frame

    • @lexp8621
      @lexp8621 2 роки тому +1

      What is your preferred method? I'm trying to learn different ways and techniques for different tasks and I do think that silicone helps, but just by the way it looks I can tell it wouldn't last long. Would an insulating spray like the ones used on batteries be better? Or an anti-rust spray treatment maybe?

    • @greenbus9
      @greenbus9 Рік тому +5

      I am an electrician in the country's largest fire apparatus manufacturer, and yes the paint is always ground off and the connection covered with a silicone sealant. I do agree that the threads are probably doing the most conducting, but a clean tight mating between the bolt head, the cable lug and the frame or body surface is also going to conduct . We also use a dielectric grease on such fittings, mainly inside the vehicle away from weather. Some of the ground cables on a fire truck are as large as 4/0, so yeah a lotta electrons......

    • @Jerry-rd9my
      @Jerry-rd9my Рік тому +3

      I argue this, if the fastener (bolt) threads and their limited contact surfaces were doing the job, we wouldn't be discussing a remedy today. However, I grant you (any opposing voice) that they probably started out fine, so perhaps weather protecting these factory ground connections during production is the answer. But as a remedy later, I'm looking to peel back as much paint from the frame as necessary to plant that cable end firmly against bare metal. It already failed once. I'm doubling down on the contact area the second time. I wouldn't want the problem to present itaelf again, at least not from these locations. These vehicles have enough wiring problems after 10 years without me adding to the list.

    • @kerrigan.
      @kerrigan. Рік тому +1

      What if you just repainted or sealed the connection after service. I think an exterior Paint seal may be better than silicon as silicon could lose the seal over time. Maybe silicon on the painted connection?

    My 2011 f150 has been down for a week. Had it towed from work to my home after it wouldn't start. My little scanner will not communicate with it. The dash is showing starting system fault, advanced trac, low oil pressure, over heating and shows the wrench. When I enter the vehicle mileage shows on the odometer. When I turn the key odometer shows dashes rather than digits. Also, the radio and blower has power until I turn key to starter position, at this time I hear one click from BCM.
    I've checked fuses in bcm and under the hood. Swapped relays as well. I can paperclip jump the starter at the relay even though it doesn't start. This ground looks rough, so I'll clean it up. I did have an intermittent battery light a few weeks before all of this.

    You forgot one thing. And a Kentucky plant electrical engineer showed us this. Between the frame and ground terminal needs a star washer that will bite through zinc coat and paint. Often Fords ground terminals do have a bite to them, they’re useless after the first fastening. We put a new star washer down against the paint no matter what. We got a Ford plant employee from the Kentucky plant we paid for advisory and he showed us this way. He said they rarely bite through paint a second time. Their bite flattens he says after their initial factory fastening. But never mentioned silicone so we adapted your silicone fix with his new star washer trick and we’ve all but eliminated these issues completely.

      What typically causes 420 and 430 codes is the vehicle is running rough and the customer never does anything about it until it's too late and it's already destroyed both catalytic converters or there is some kind of leak somewhere vacuum wise on the engine sometimes it will create lean codes sometimes it will create Rich code to just all depends on how it's failing but I've replaced a lot of those catalytic converters as well because PO420 and po430 means catalytic converter inefficiency that typically means the catalytic converters are bad
