Aretha Franklin belongs to a class reserved for very few. She had a commanding instrument but didnt just showboat, she had light and shade to her voice, she displayed all aspects of her voice in an artistic, versatile and deeply musical manner. Her musical interpretive wit was stellar. Her ability to ad lib and yet maintain the melody in real time was so polished, connected and fluid. We wouldn't have a Mariah, Whitney, Beyonce or Ariana without the mother of all Divas!!
@@mathfreak2521 Babs is incredible but belongs to a different hierarchy altogether. Aretha helped to lay the foundations of runs and rifts in contemporary music
Whitney admired and learned from Aretha, that's true. *BUT it's not true that Whitney wouldn't have been the artist she's been without Aretha Franklin!* Whitney was born in a very talented musical family. Her ants, uncles, cousins on mother's side all were/are very talented Gospel/Soul/Old School R&B and Jazz singers. *Whitney learned the most from her mother Cissy Houston* (Gospel,Soul, Old School R&B, Opera..) and her cousin Dionne Warwick (Gospel,Soul, Old School R&B and Jazz). Opera singer Leontyne Price who's a cousin of Cissy also had an influence on Whitney. *AND last, but certainly not least: Whitney had years of training in church!*
One of the best voices ever. Even Freddie Mercury during 1982 Milton Keynes concert wanted to sing(and did it) part of his improvisation in style of Aretha Franklin:) pure joy
What always stood out for me was her mixing technique. Her voice was never disconnected she could stretch her mix up to bb5 without making it heady. She's definitely my favourite singer ever.
Being Born and raised in Detroit. This really touched me. Thank you Ken for taking the time with Aretha Video. As always look forward to all of your posts young man👍
She was wonderful. Her connection with the civil rights movement made her even more fantastic . I was lucky to have met her once when I lived in Detroit. She was very nice . Thanks Ken for another wonderful video , you are so cool ! The king vocal coaching.
From about 1960 to 1974...Aretha was a master of putting those runs/riffs in the correct space. As music started to change and her voice as well...you would see her adding more of those runs/riffs to her music where in previous years she would have never. Here you have Aretha at her very best. This is Blues meets the black church. How she talks and then sings are all the things she learned from watching her father Rev. C.L. Franklin. Talking and sing is that call and response. That's something that she would do her entire career.
The thing I wish many of these young singers would grasp is that soul is not equal to how loud, how high, or how many notes you can sing in one phrase. They think that's what soul is and that's just not it at all. They forget to tell us the story as opposed to those other attributes. They are more narcissistic and think it's about their voice only. For this reason, with many of today's singers, the words come out sounding like an afterthought. What Aretha is doing is a technique called back phrasing, where they sing behind the beat. It's a technique many gospel, blues, and jazz singers use. It's mostly done on slow to mid tempo songs. Aretha is one of the true masters at it!
Aretha got on stage and done what she was born to do which is to sing. Noone but noone alive or dead will ever touch her. God was in her soul. Rest in peace Queen Aretha and sing to God's heavenly angels 🙏💖
You definitely need to react to her performances of "I Ain't Never Had A Man 1967" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water 1971" some of her greatest performances in my mind.
Back in 1984 The Rappin Duke with his song Duh Huh knew what he was singing about when he sang "Aretha Franklin, Aretha Franklin, Aretha Franklin let me rock you that's all I want to do Aretha Franklin". To be serious, Aretha Franklin was one of the best entertainers who ever lived and thankyou for honoring her in your video. Thanks Ken for all the great videos.
There’s a thing with her and many other (like James brown) that wile sure they’re singing but have that talking as in the seed and rhythm talking but have a voice of singing and I think so many song nowadays that fell soulless like Ed sheeren and Taylor swift, that personal conversational rawness to it that makes songs by artist like Aretha Franklin that feel so good it feels like you’re having a conversation with them rather then just hearing them sing
I wouldn't call Ed soulless. I feel like Ed doesn't over sing like many of the other singers out there. They've equated over singing to singing with soul. They're totally missing it.
I’ve had the opportunity to see Aretha bring Jesus into an Arena! I was impressed ... may she be ridin’ the Angels ‘round in her Pink Cadillac! 😉✌️🤟🎶💕🤓
To me, Aretha & Stevie Wonder has some of the best discographys in music! I fit in an album a week. Favorite Aretha album is Aretha Arrives.. Her rendition of That's Life is everything! Great Analysis!
Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle & Sam Brown are my three favourite female vocalists, all three have powerful soulful voices. I shall always be thankful to Dan Aykroyd for introducing me to Aretha & many other artists via his film The Blues Brothers. Opening doors into new areas of music that isn’t rock/metal based.
Amazing Vocal Reaction Mr. Tamplin, Aretha had so much feeling and such an amazing vocal style and range, so talented. Thank You for reacting to her Mr. Tamplin I really enjoyed this one. Mr. Tamplin can you please react to James Brown or Prince, I love their music too.
What you're studying and noticing is everyday for me. Aretha is indeed the Queen, but all that soul and "pocket" you're referring to, sounds like home for me. I'm grateful for that. Enjoy!
Aretha Franklin, Etta James, and Bessie Smith had the most confident looks on their faces while performing. They knew how great they were but didn't step into arrogance.
Hey Ken your awesome, i had my first singing lesson today, lol he got me from Eb to G major in one lesson. Had me beltin immediately either way.. your emails on criticism and your personal stories are brilliant. @ 34 Im late to the party but thats how the popular kids roll 😂🤣
Great analysis! Remember that Aretha was extremely well versed in Blues which is at the heart of Western music. All of those albums that she did for Columbia prepared her for Atlantic records. What is missing from today's nanny goat "singers" is the ingredient of Blues. It's the balls of almost everything we all love. You don't have to be a man to have balls in music. It's an attitude, feel and approach that Tina Turner, Janis Joplin, Aretha, Chaka Khan, etc...had. And that stems from the osmosis of Blues. The reason so much music and singers today are worthless is because they are divorced from Blues. The very ingredient that gives feel and longevity to all that we have listened to. Thank you for breaking down an iconic live video. Excellent work friend!
It's definitely hard to find the pocket with this choice of arrangement.... But only the incomparable Aretha Franklin can make it sound genius!! ... Don't think we'll ever see a triple threat like that again ... singer, songwriter, pianist.
I had to watch your enjoyable reaction video to Ms Franklin again b/c I've never seen this performance nor ur commentaries b4! The soul in that woman's voice is priceless & it speaks to my heart. I was raised listening to it & I truly miss her 😢. But u mentioned Stevie, another favorite, and wondered if u had seen this duet. ua-cam.com/video/pTnCHP-9Wdo/v-deo.html Even though they were lots older when they did this, and their voices weren't as youthful, they just have "IT" and I love this performance. If u check it out let me know what u think.
Yes indeed,se is the Queen of Soul! Like some one has already mention before, that duet she has done with George Michael,,what a big and outstanding performance those too!!! I got nuts the first time I heared it,and still do!!! Great reaction from your part Ken! We must not forse Betty Wright in that soullist neither! Same category of soulsinger!!!💝💖💗

How is it even possible to have that much talent imbued into one person? From a jealous guitar player, that's taken years and years to remember the scales and notes on a fret board! Absolutely magnificent aretha Franklin is a phenomenal piano player and such a great singer Ken she is amazing great vocals she has soulful singing
There’s nothing to be said, Aretha is simply IT!!! ❤❤️❤️❤️❤️
She was the biggest inspiration for Freddie Mercury. Thats how important her work is.
She's amazing, merqury5!
Never fn knew that👊🏿👊🏿👊🏿
Agreed! Yes absolutely along with her being a huge inspiration to Whitney Houston as well.
Didn't know that. Hhmmmm. Thanks bud.
Aretha, I miss you. The world is a duller and less expressive place without you. Thank the Lord, we have all these wonderful recordings of you.

Never be another Aretha. RIP MISS QUEEN OF SOUL. ARETHA FRANKLIN. Greatest of all time
Freddie Mercury used to be jealous because George Michael had the chance to sing with her :)
What a duet that would have made the two greatest singers ever
The one. The only Ms Aretha Franklin.
There are many talented singers past, present an future, but few have the gift she had
Lord have mercy, ARETHA!! I just adore this song! Aretha is hard to define--she just IS! ❤️❤️❤️❤️OMG the performance is literally sheer perfection.
Aretha will always be the QUEEN! Nobody can beat Aretha, R.
