  • I love bringing you some of the best opera recordings by some of the best singers both past and present. Today, I'd like to go back to a duet that's frequently used in film and tv, sung by the characters Lakmé, daughter of a Brahmin priest, and her servant Mallika, as they go to gather flowers by a river.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to The Flower Duet with Sabine Devieihe, Marianne Crebassa, Alexandre Tharaud and Les Siècles.

I know this is your true bailiwick, but how about a return to someone who began with classical music and singing opera but was too innovative and too much a free spirit to continue in that vein--BETH HART. You did one reaction of her phenomenal cover of the blues classic "I'd Rather Go Blind" with guitarist Joe Bonamasssa about 17 months ago. But a performance considered to be perhaps the greatest live rock / blues rock performance of all time--Beth Hart's "Am I The One" at the Paradiso in Amsterdam--requires your expertise. (Had Janis Joplin lived longer, she may have eventually achieved a performance such as this...): ua-cam.com/video/hZG3MghkX3Q/v-deo.html

Hey Elizabeth, could you please review Procol Harum, song a Whiter shade of pale, sung by Gary Brooker. The one version in question is in Denmark 2006, 40 years after he first wrote and sung it. Gary just died a couple of months ago. He was accompanied with a orchestra and choir on this version outside under a tent. With thousands looking on. Thanks again Elizabeth and God Bless. I pray your husbands surgery goes well also. Best wishes

Marianne has a such a beautiful, rich tone that separates her voice from most of the other mezzos that I have heard. I wish that I could describe things better , the way that Elizabeth does, which I think is one of her special talents and the one in particular that I have great appreciation for. She has a way of being able to verbalize her analysis of a singer's voice and technique(s) that helps people like myself to appreciate the music even more.

This is my favorite version of this duet. I think it does make a difference that both singers are singing in their native language, the words and phrasing are crystal clear. I also feel this should be a soprano and mezzo duet. The deeper mezzo color is needed to contrast.

This is THE best performance of this that I've ever heard. Far too often, the soprano overpowers the mezzo to the point where you can hardly hear her. But these two play off each other perfectly, so that both parts can be heard clearly. By the way, speaking of *body language* -- it's funny that nobody seems to notice the point where Sabine for some reason mispronounces a word, which makes Marianne start to laugh.
Why doesn't anybody wonder about that? A few moments later, when Marianne is singing her line, Sabine looks at her and Marianne shrugs. Again nobody seems to notice that.
The reason: Well, if you understand French, instead of singing *"subite* s'empare de moi" (suddenly takes me away), she sings *"sa bite* s'empare de moi" (his cock takes me away), which makes Marianne start to laugh. And then, when Sabine looks at her, she shrugs, as if to say, "So we might have to sing it again. Not a problem...."

When I was a child, the idea of eating fetid old cheese, on purpose, was something disgusting old people did.
By the time I was in my 30s, I was an aficionado on Brie, Camembert and Époisses.

There are three selections that are impossible to describe, so unbelievable for me. They are "Flower Duet", what you presented today, Pachelbel Cannon in D, and the violin solo from Stand by Me, short but so amazing.
I remember you mentioning the position of the mouth when singing high notes, with a Patricia Janeckova selection, her beautiful talent. By the way, very sad that Patricia has breast cancer. What a talent. Praying for a full recovery.

This has been something of an eye-opener for me. I used to think opera was mostly vocal acrobatics and showing off - it never really worked for me anywhere nearly as well as instrumental classical music.
Having been following The Charismatic Voice and several other vocal coaches (and opera singers) who react to metal for a couple of years now, I'm seeing things differently. One very clear example of this is the moment where I thought "ooh, nice decrescendo". Immediately after I had this thought, you said "beautiful decrescendo!"
I thoroughly enjoyed not only your captivatingly enthusiastic analysis, but also the duet being performed by two remarkable singers.
    So, um. Thank you, Elizabeth.

I've watched their duet about 50 times now and what hits me so much is that not only are they absolutely fantastic and are able to give so much emotion and passion, I LOVE how they're just having fun singing this together, which makes this performance even better.

My favorite opera! Had the pleasure of seeing this rarely performed opera when I lived in NYC. It was a wonderful birthday gift I will never forget. The rose on my box seat from my lover, then the opera performed by the Metropolitan Opera. A treasured romantic moment.

Not only is this one of my favorite passages, this specific video is on my favorite list. There's something about watching the emotion of all the performers that brings a piece to life. Your assessment of Crebassa's voice is spot on. They complement each other so well. In the movie Shawshank Redemption, I always thought this would have been a more appropriate song to be played over the intercome.

This is such an incredible work of art. The way the voices intertwine with each other, the way the instruments intertwine with each other, the way the vocals intertwine with the instrumentation. The passion and beauty of it all! I’ll be revisiting this masterpiece for the rest of my life! Thank you again. Music is a gift that truly keeps on giving. Evoking emotions, feelings and imagery. Pure magic. Thank you once again.

Hello from South Africa. I have watched/listened to this rendition probably a hundred times and am smitten by it every time. It's simply sublime. I cannot get enough of Sabine Devieilhe and am in awe of her collaboration with Alexandre Tharaud on the art songs of Poulenc and Fauré. As I dash to beguiled by Les Chemins de l'amour one more time!

And on radio and TV advertising! I first heard it when I was schoolboy. I was "forced" to go to my sister's school concert by my mother. Most of it was as dreary as I feared it would be, but then three girls came on stage. One sat at the piano and the other two shared a microphone. "Oh, no!" I thought and sank down in my seat to suffer through it. But then they began the "chorus" of the Flower Duet, accompanied by the girl on the piano. I honestly don't remember how good the girls were - but they must have sung largely in tune, because I had perfect pitch and loathed out-of-tune singing. But they sounded magnificent to me. I've never forgotten that perfornance, or the Flower Duet! 🙂
