    I asked Tim Riley to give me a tip when I was about 25 about singing bass. He said, “keep doin what you’re doing and when you hit oh about 35your voice is gonna drop again.”

    That tip on placement for Bass was new to me though. I knew about the vibration but it’s a little different when you actually “direct” the placement for resonance. Somethings come natural but so many things you un-naturally suppress.

    I'm practicing this while doing scales, and then practicing songs. The bass scales I'm using are from Aussie Vocal Coach on UA-cam. When the scale gets to the bottom, I stop the video and continue taking the scale down to the bottom of my range. I ASK my voice to go lower. If it doesn't want to, then I go back up to the previous interval and repeat it about ten times. Then drop back down and it works. By the time I'm done, I have coaxed 6 or 7 more intervals out of my voice. I like to think this is slowly strengthening and increasing my range while the exercises in general are keeping my tone and intonation in good shape. It leaves no soreness whatsoever.

    Best advice ever; don’t worry about the lows right now focus on singing correctly. Be a good singer with a low voice.

    Hey, thank you Matt for sharing this information. I only became interested in singing a couple of months ago and have not yet taken any leasons (don't worry I will, I'm not under the illusion that I will get good without help) . Your channel(s) helped me a lot getting control over my lower register (now I can sing C2 with way better control and even go a bit lower than that, no control further down though).

    Bass Singing Central, I want to say Thank you for what you're doing with this channel, and for the tips and tricks to help everyone here become better bass singers. One of my dearest friends is a very popular and well known bass singer, and in my opinion, one of the absolute best in Southern Gospel music. You may know him, his name is Jeff Chapman. He is, of course, the bass singer for the Kingdom Heirs. I am an aspiring bass singer as well, and I think I do pretty good with it. At least while I'm singing along with my radio, in the cab of my truck. My ultimate dream is to, one day, stand and sing on the stage along with amazing groups like The Kingdom Heirs, Gold City, The Kingsmen Quartet, etc.....
    So many incredible groups with so many incredible bass singers have touched my life, and the lives of millions of other people, that there is no way we could ever repay them for what they've done. But with a channel like yours, it can help us strive to be as good as those who have gone before us. I believe that continuing to spread His word through Southern Gospel music, would be a good start to repay those who started this incredible journey, and paved the way for those who follow. Thank you again for all you do, and God bless you all !!!

    Placement is key for all singers not just bass singers. You drop your jaw and place the tone exactly where he is talking about reguardless what part you sing. If the vibration is in the throat then your placement is wrong.

    • @GamingDrummer89
      @GamingDrummer89 5 років тому

      Yes, I heard Tim Riley say that all the other singers use the same placement. Go to 3:25 in this video: ua-cam.com/video/GcoLTGYd-sg/v-deo.html

    if you block your nose and the sound cuts off then that's wrong, has to be in the forehead eyes area

    I just heard another singing coach talk about placement. He said the word “placement” is more about imagery than actuality. That sound is not actually placed in the sinus cavity. Also another coach has said that if air comes through the nose at all then the technique is not correct. I just don’t understand and can’t figure out how to get the cut in my voice. I also spoke with Jeff Chapman several years ago about it when I first heard about the mask. I would love to figure it out.

    How would you recommend singing bass and tenor, I found I can sing a g1 okay but I used to be a pretty good tenor and since I’ve practiced bass, tenor has become harder

      Also, I hit my head pretty hard once and it made my nose run a lot, but I remember having I clear nose before that. Is it possible to feel clear but not be.

    I have a question regarding my singing techniques my
    I told my chorus teacher about subharmonics and how I sang an F1 with it but he said it was fry and it could damage my voice I'm. It sure what to do beacuse I want to keep practicing subharmonics but I'm not sure if I should

  • @bradycall1889

    @BassSingingCentralMatt The placement doesn't go into the throat nor the nose. People have different definitions of what a "mask" is or isn't and so, therefore, saying to sing in the "mask" is a bit too vague. The way most people state it, which is around the nose area, is actually not a good placement (unless your singing with your mouth closed for a consonant than it's okay). I, personally, place my low notes about the roof of my tongue, almost in the "mask" but not quite. Some people say crazy things such as their low notes coming out of there eye balls, but that never worked for me. But of course, you should never sing in the throat either otherwise you'll sound "dark" in a funny-sounding way.
    Could that be perhaps because I'm a baritone? Do baritones and basses sing low notes differently? Also, my definition of low notes are probably different from yours. A2 is on the lower part of my range (comfortable, but definitely not in the middle) for example, and also G2 (also comfortable and I can project it). An example of a note that would probably be more on the low end for you would be E2 (not too low for you I hear you speak resonantly lower than that). Are the techniques of basses and baritones different?

    To the ones who says it's not what it use to be. You're right. The "old timers" use to drink, fornicate, commit adulterous on the buses at there concerts. I know because I was there and seen it happen. And to say that's it's not worship is dead wrong. I was a gold city reunion a couple months ago and bout. Had a Pentecostal shout when they sang It's still the Cross. So you're right. It's not what it use to be.

    The best advice for gospel singing, in any position, is to allow GOD to be in control. Frankly, gospel singing is nothing like it used to be. It has become more business than worship.

    • @BassSingingCentralMatt
      @BassSingingCentralMatt  7 років тому +2

      Dennis Bates i agree on keeping God first. In regards to the business vs worship...I know several people who would argue the opposite but each has their opinion.
