To anyone passing through the comments, here's one little tip that I have personally tested over a period of 22 days...
The bass singing stars of UA-cam (Avi, Tim, Geoff, etc) are all profoundly talented, but there are a number of instances where they do not necessarily use their potential to its fullest. Growl technique, most popularly featured in Ring of Fire and Natural Disaster, is becoming more popular with every use. The problem is that it's a two faced method to singing lower notes. Growling not only causes physical irritation of the throat, but it severely damages the vocal chords. I took a 22 day break from using this technique and my range instantly dropped a half step. I also noticed that I could sing my lower notes much later into the day, regardless of how much I exhausted my voice. Growling is an unnatural technique, and the reason so many older bass singers have ridiculous chest ranges is because they were never exposed to it. They learned how to get low the right way. Although our current bass stars still have some years to cover, there's an obvious reason why J.D. Sumner was singing 0 octave chest notes and the others aren't.
This is obviously a very late reply (8 months) but I'm a bit confused by your statement. Growls are done with the false cords (vestibular folds) and not with the vocal folds. how chould you damage your vocal folds by not using them? (disclaimer, I only have a very basic understanding of the subject, my education is in physics and chemistry, not biology or anatomy)
From my own experience of using one of those bass singing technique (subharmonic in my case), I would rather agree with Forleb. It truely somehow exhausts the natural part of my lower register. But of course you can use those technique, but I think you shoudn't use if you are not 100% sure that it will come out smooth and melodic.
Thank you so much I'm 15 and have been trying to growl for years and it gave me strep throat countless times so I'll hold off for a few years now
Bass.voice.completes its development after 40's and.growls are just like whistles you should only.use them.in few specific moments, but another thing, the correct growl is done with the false vocal folds so it wont kill your voice, maybe youre talking.about grasp or raspy singing
@@sum41foreverown If you don't retract them properly, your true vocal folds might rub against the false folds and get irritated. Some people are lucky enough that this is easier for them to do with little effort but in general, learning to retract your true folds when growling is a good first step.

Hey my awesome favorite bass singer and friend and my new favorite bass singer.
and friend Matt Davis.
i like this program it really speaks to us!
Matt Davis is a good bass singer, I didn't realize he was 23 (the same age as me). It's encouraging to see a young bass singer in southern gospel music, thanks for the tips I will definitely put these to practice.

A lot of comments here are wanting to know how to sing bass, but honestly to sing bass you really have to be a bass. These techniques are are great but only work if you can honestly sing low. The won't make you sing lower.
Excellent tips. Thanks guys!

Neat video bud keep it up
I think this race to the bottom r.e. singing low notes has led many young bass singers to spend a lot of time trying to reach notes low C and under while neglecting developing other important parts of their singing such as resonance, pitch accuracy, timbre, mid range, high range, sight reading...
Man to be honest with yall I actually started singing bass on purpose and here is y. So I sang for my church as a choir and I was really supposed to be baritone and it was going good until one day one of our bass singer called in sick and he was sick for like a week and so I wanted to see what it felt like to sing bass so I started singing bass and in one of our songs at the end I sang a low Eb2 and I was shocked and so I started to sing more and more bass and here I am trying to see what tips is best for me to sing bass
I'm 23 in 2020. And struggling non singer dreaming to be one.
I’m a huge fan of southern gospel music also I’m a huge fan of legacy five

Matthew Fouch your welcome
Matt,
What do you do to keep the cloud off of your voice, to keep clarity?
One thing about being a low bass singer ( for me ) is starting young. My parents always had gospel quartet records around. When I was 11 or 12 I started singing bass with them, especially before church. I had the Blackwood brothers, statesmen etc. No I couldn’t always get the real low notes back then. But it came through the years. So if you’re not a natural bass or you don’t start young, than I don’t know what to tell ya.
Weakness of gospes is that tou have no flexibilty, try to have a complete voice (lows, mids and highs)
Trying to find technique and training tips for Bass line singers with the range of Avi Kaplan, Geoff Castelluci (SP?), Tim Foust, etc. Preferably microphone tips and tricks.
These guys use a ton of sub harmonic singing.
James BassMan Slim Geoff is the only who uses subharmonic.Tim uses growl and fry.Avi uses chest, fry and sometimes growl.
Matthew Fouch, where could i find Bass Technique, Riff practice, various sounds, etc. for acapella? I can't find much online to learn these things.
I’m sorry but I’m not really sure about that.
Hey so I have a problem😂. I'm 17 and my voice dropped around 13 and recently I really have the desire to sing bass but I'm like in the weeds on learning. Also I'm not even sure if my voice has what it takes...because my voice can't really reach too low it fluctuates different days etc.. I just want to sing bass at church and when I sing along with songs...not professionally. It really stinks so if anyone has any tips or advice please contact me. Thanks!
Can anyone explain how to construct the bass part of a harmony?
It will obviously depend on what genre you're writing for. In barbershop the bass will usually stay on the root or the fifth of the chord.
As a bass singer myself how do I go about getting professional quartets to recognize me
Here’s 3 things to start with:
1) Quality demo
2) Network/build relationships
3) Go to as many concerts/events as possible
is it possible to learn how to properly sing outside your normal range if you're able to reach the notes? I can get down to C2, as an individual note, but I'm not sure if I would actually be able to sing that low since I'm not a bass singer
Yes, its all about practice
I'm actually 21, classified as a bass singer and studying at a music school. Although I can't even reach the E4 fully (my Maximum range is the D# with some effort), I can't reach the low C, too (I can go well until the D with my maximum effort). My question is: how can I develop my low C as a bass? Can I be a baritone, and/or lose my low notes when I grow older? Love your channel, thank you for sharing knowledge!
You should always train lows, mids and highs, im 22 bass baritone range G0-G5 still working at it, ive been singing for almost 3 years
If you don't have a low C, then chances are you are not yet a true bass, as your E2 needs to be very comfortable to sing, meaning you should be able to sing down to at least C2 at the bottom.
@@mcmerry2846 G0 is not a part of your range. Chest fry, vocal fry, subharmonics, and growl do not count.
Is low C C2?
Yes
I saw this last year, and thought he meant C1.
Then after hearing Avi, Foust, and Geoff hit impossibly low notes that aren't even C1, it dawned on me today that he had to have meant C2, which I can hit so I feel better now.
What exercises can i do to sing lower notes
Breath and "larynx coordination" ...vocal technique at all
Escales
i hate my bass voice
I embrace my bass notes, but I hate the fact that I can't sing high... like at all. Chest or falsetto, I struggle when singing the 4th octave - a range where even most men should be able to sing with no trouble.
You have to love it, treat it right and train it...you will love it. Best voice ever
@@bestusernameever6518 man Im struggling with head voice but once I dominate it...it would be awasome check at Tim Foust, he sings low, mid and high
