After practicing martial arts for over 12 years, you finally made me realize why I still am someone who avoids violence as much as possible. Fighting and Violence are two absolutely different beasts indeed. Thanks for making me put words on something I was just able to feel until now
Yes. I'm a very big man who has only ever fought twice in my life. Both times I was extremely angry, and both times, I committed heavy violence on my provoker. I always walked away victorious, but I felt bitter and angry at myself each time. I hate violence, but never got into fighting or combat sports because I didn't want to hurt people. SEW changed my opinion on the situation, so now I'm considering whether I can afford getting my daughter and I enrolled in something together.
@@maxanderson3733 Perhaps on paper but in practice the two couldn't be more different. To fight is to want to protect you or someone else. To act in self-defense. Violence on the other hand is the desire to inflict physical pain upon others.
To people who think martial arts are barbaric or unnecessary, I have to remind that they're exactly what their name implies: an art. You might not see what's artistic about beating the everliving fuck out of another person, but that's only if you don't understand the art. Ask a boxer about how Muhammad Ali managed to make a joke out of boxers with years of experience and they'll give you a long winded explanation of every nuance of his fighting style and why he was so good at it. Humans can turn anything into an art form, there's no reason to treat combat as any different
Every altercation outside of social altercations require self defense, guns and knives aren’t a consistent form of protection for everyone at all times, martial arts are. It’s more than an art, I view it as a necessity to protect yourself and loved ones.
@@proverbs1268 Martial arts are cool but you're delusional if you think punching a bad guy in the gut is gonna put him down more reliably than shooting him in it.
It's only a matter of time before we get "The manga that eliminates all worldwide issues and makes you a home made meal on time" and I for one can't wait.
@@revoe5522 I wonder if Teppu is like Tanya the Evil, in that our "protagonist" is really the antagonist. Tanya's not the hero of that story. She's very clearly the villain. Hell, if anyone's the "hero" there it's Mary Sue. I'm definitely reading Teppu after this, though.
Once again Eyepaych Wolf's sheer passion and storytelling makes me care deeply about something in which I would ordinarily have little interest. You are amazing and every video you do is enthralling and forces me to take interest in a new thing that I would otherwise have ignored.
For real, the way that eyepatch wolf tells a story can nearly bring me to tears even though i just learned about the thing he's talking about 20 minutes
I love how it's a spin on the shonen. The antagonist is a straight up never give up character and the protagonist is arrogant and could be seen as a stereotypical villain almost freiza vibes and fucked in the head. And yet you still cheer her on.
@@SlightlyPerturbedOne Do NOT be recommending Shamo to people. They don't deserve that mindset change. It's still one or the best mangas but also one of the worst/worst times in my life. The protagonist is one of the worst characters written in manga.
This video made me read Teppu, and now I’m absolutely fascinated with MMA. I’ve already come back to rewatch this video multiple times, and now I have a new respect and understanding of the sport and its many styles and techniques. As someone who feels like a fish out of water with land sports, I’ve always been dubious of martial arts. However, the passion in this video and in the manga has influenced me and absolutely convinced me to look further into it and even possibly give it a try. Thanks for opening up my mind to the different aspects of a sport I never really paid much mind to, I hope I have enough determination to get past even the initial training/exercise required for such a sport.
I always wanted to try it got forced into it when I wasn’t in a good place quit then when I rewatched this it made me want to try it again and it was the best choice ever
this teaches you ntohing about hwo the movies actually work and its just a picture of a guy doing pieces of the move. he is in perfect position for these moves no ones gunna be in those positions irl. but its does show a humanly realistic fighters history in anime form tho
@Erwin Lii I think that depends on your character, what happened between the abusive relative and them, as well as what happened in their story together and finally, what you are trying to achieve with the story.
In the US, the first thing they teach kids about Karate is that it is used in self-defense. Because martial arts used correctly can kill somebody, and worst case scenario they can kill somebody they didn't intend on killing.
I have some friends here in my city that are like that. They train a bunch of different martial arts every single day, for years. Be around then is really interesting, because I'm so weak, but they have such a peaceful aura that I can't even describe.
This video both captured what I love about the mentality of practicing martial arts, and has inspired me to finally get around to something I've meant to for a long while-start training BJJ. Thanks for the boost I needed!
Bjj is a ton of fun. I started last week and I look forward to the next class everyday. Some guy at my gym hit me with this crazy sweep that I saw in all rounder meguru which is another good mma manga. I wish you luck man
@@kirillfedtsov I've read meguru and some of teppuu. Meguru goes into his training so you can see some of the fundamentals and some theory behind moves. It gets pretty in depth you just have to look at the characters because it's not gonna necessarily tell you how stuff happened but you see every grip and lots of small movements that make bjj work. It's shooto so similar rules to mma but a lil different. Teppuu is only like 30 chapters so you're just not gonna get as much from it and I'd say it's a little less realistic but still a good read. I guess tough is another mma manga, I haven't read that one. Kengan asura is pretty unrealistic but has some cool action makes me want to get good with arm triangles
Yeah same I’ve trained in Krav Maga for a few years but have always been interested in going over to BJJ and this was a great vid to inspire. Good luck on your journey my dude
This legit had me fighting tears at the end, once upon a time ago, I used to be heavy into martial arts and unfortunately snapped my forearm so bad I got metal down both bones, and frankly, it devastated me. Like, wound up drinking myself almost to death after a decade of drinking since it happened kinda devastated. It was all I cared about, even when I was a kid watching too much Bruce Lee, and at the time I busted my arm was learning JKD concepts after years of other martial arts and loved it deeply for the reasons you stated, learning JKD was my dream. I didn't care about winning or losing, there's just you and that moment and nothing else exists but that, the joy of learning inbetween, getting mentally and physically stronger and its a feeling I wish I could really do justice with words. I recently spent a year sober, got into bodybuilding, and my arm finally works in a manner that could actually fight again and this video made me remember how much I loved that feeling to my very core, just finding somebody who's better than me and fighting them until we're on the level! As soon as this covid shit goes away I'm getting the fuck back into it. I'm about to turn 34 after burning out for a decade, so I sure as hell wont be changing the world with it or nothing, but I felt every word you said like they were my own. I rarely write YT comments (Probably because my autistic arse has a tendency to overshare, just like this), but I want to thank you for reminding exactly what that shit feels like, I'll just be doing it for the love of fighting. Keep fighting yourself brother and thanks again
I already had a deep fascination with the martial arts, weapons, and warfare that I try to use in my writing. But this video really filled in the gap of what it FEELS like to actually fight. And as a result I want to try it, if for no other reason than that first hand experience will improve my writing. But a part of me was really doubting, I'm just a 27 year old nerd that grew up reading, writing, playing games, never played outside all rough tough and dirty like the other kids. And to crown it off I'm Autistic, so would I be able to learn even just the basics if all my love and focus is elsewhere? But more importantly would I be too slow to ever learn something that by definition requires you to move and think fast? But your comment here inspired me further. If you as a 34 year old autistic can do it, then I can at least learn the basics. I can be happy with that.
@@knylia1489 I got into martial arts much younger, but it actually helped focus my head a lot, I genuinely feel it helped a lot with my autisim, especially as I was the angry kind as a kid, it really helped to calm me down. As an adult I got into Tae Kwon Do, and as much as I was pretty crap with my balance at first, I eventually became very co-ordinated in a way I would have never expected, same with that learning how to think in different manners. I get where you're coming from with the thinking fast thing, teenage me got into hip hop as my mind was blown by the idea of freestyling, the idea of people being able to communicate freely like that was mad to me as I was an awful communicator, but it became a specialised interest, and can think and talk fast in a way I never used to be able to, I definitely think martial arts could help with that! it's a similar thing, learning how to express yourself physically instead, as it did for me in a serious way. The obvious benefit as well, it gave me a lot more confidence too, so I'd personally recommend it. Also, I have still at least shadowboxed constantly over the years and am still very fast, your age shouldn't hinder your learning at all, it'll likely just make your recovery time a bit slower, ha
So here is my experience with this video. I started watching and closed the tab after 4 to 5 minutes. I went and read Teppu start to finish and enjoyed it. I came back to watch the rest of this video. The conclusion to the story you crafted in here actually moved me and made me appreciate the entire experience. You did a good thing creating this video.
As someone who has practiced martial arts (karate) for 10-11 years but never got in fights at school or anything like that you've put it perfectly how i now believe i feel. Violence and fighting are two different things, and the feelings they give also differ greatly. Thank you for this video, i feel content finally having an answer to the question i've been asking myself for years. You've earned yourself a subscriber :)
Aight so I gotta ask does that karate stuff actually work, cause I used to whip these guys when I was in school that took martial arts. 2 did karate and the other dude did this one where the kicked a bunch. Only training I ever had was getting jumped weekly and fighting in the ring which was this big circle in the woods where all the neighborhood kids came together and fought in this amateur tournament every Friday. When I fought those guys they would go down pretty easy. Only time I would see that karate stuff work was when the 2 karate dudes fought.
@@cheesyboy1627 With karate it is very hit or miss with if it works or not I would say, the differing styles and focuses for different people make it hard to group the martial art as a whole together because of all the different styles and techniques. If you're mainly focusing on kata or training for Olympic martial arts (so more going for points etc) obviously your overall fighting skill in street fights and things are going to be worse. I practiced sessen ryu which yes we focused on kata but the main chunk of it was practicing the fundamentals of combat although we didn't do much sparring to perfect this. with all that being said i believe karate can work and does work, you just need to find the right style and techniques/training style that suites you and what you want to get out of it. If you want to learn a good street fighting sport though I would recommend krav maga or muai thai. Hope this response helps.

A manga similar to this is Holyland. It covers streetfighting and it goes really in depth on boxing. At first it starts with simple combos and footwork but gradually it tackles a lot of complex stuff. It also deals heavily with the psychology of people. What drives people to get into street fights and such. I'd love it if you made a video on it
Hajime no Ippo is another classic on the topic of boxing. It even has a 2000 anime adaption and is known to cover alotta fundamentals as well as strategies from real life boxers from what I've been told.
holyland is my favorite manga of every manga series i have read, i went into it thinking it was gonna just be a fighting manga about gangs and stuff like that kinda like out! but i quickly realized it was a psychological manga explained through martial arts, it is the best manga i have read and i 100% reccomend it.

Im looking into muay thai, and the passion and heart each fighter shows is jaw-dropping. As a kid, I got picked on and had knives pulled on me. It made me feel helpless and scared. Martial arts is helping me gain confidence in my life. Thank you for being who you are.
That last match you talked about had me fighting tears and I don't know how you pulled that level of emotion out of me. The shots you picked were extremely difficult to watch, but your narration wouldn't let me look away.
Don’t know if you already heard about it, but there’s a manga called “Batuque” it’s about capoeira and it’s quite good I recommend it, what’s interesting is that the author actually train capoeira and also boxing.
holy shit i’ve been teaching myself capoeira moves from vids online to integrate into my fighting style because the first time i saw it in a fight in Kengan Omega (Gaolang vs Carlos) i thought it was rly beautiful. i’ve been searching for something like this for so long thank you
I don’t wanna talk about the technicality about movements in martial arts because I’m not nearly good enough to, but the way he describes the intimacy of fighting is real, it legitimately does not matter what fighting style you use but as long as your fighting someone disciplined you feel it. Also the world disappears when your in it. Anyways beautiful video, usually never see the real in the moment emotional part of fighting.
In middle school, I was the most depressed I've been in my life, but then I started thai boxing, which i continued to do for a short while until i had to stop due to medical issues. But the thing is, that short period of time is probably what helped me pivot into a happier place growing up. Whenever I sparred, it was like the rest of my life bled away and I just felt the exhilaration of a fight. Fighting sports really do make you feel like no other sport or hobby does. And honestly, seeing stuff like these always makes me want to try again sometime.
Some context around the Joanna vs Weili fight that’s discussed at the end: Joanna was previously the champion for years and pretty much obliterated everyone she fought until she lost the belt to Rose Namajunas. She was known for her endurance and takedown defense and (as mentioned in the video) Weili had never gone longer than 3 rounds. Going into the fight most people thought if it went to a decision Joanna would win, which makes Weili’s performance all the more impressive.
its just too bad everyone is disregarding weilis skill and accomplishments because she lost. I really hope she makes a comeback i just want to see an even match - not some curbstomp
note on the note: Joanna was destroyed by Rose in their first match and destroyed again (though to a lesser extent) in their rematch and in Zhang's next fight she was beaten by Rose who is now the champ again. Zhang is getting a rematch soon and she and Joanna are the top 2 challengers
FUCKING LOVE THIS MANGA. All Rounder Meguru is another that beautifully displays the grappling side of MMA. I read those 2 and Hajime No Ippo before my fights to hype myself up. This definitely needs an anime adaption.
What i love about Brazil is that you never expect who's a good fighter here, i went to an experimental class in a Muay Thai dojo and there was a local store clerk as a high rank fighter. I'm just a martial arts student hopping to one school to another for the hell of it, but that made me smile and I almost stayed there
So basically a Shonen MMA Manga where the rival archetype is the protagonist and the kind Shonen hero is the rival. Shit, I'm kinda into that just off the concept
I just read it all in one sitting. Its a treat. And having done so, I cant help but being amused at your work choice. But thats all from me. Give it a looksie
It also kinda shows how the shonen archetype of "I just do this because I love it, I don't hate anyone" is... kinda off-putting. How most people would look at that kind of person and not be inspired or happy to be around them, and think more "what is wrong with this person?"
@@ShinigamiSparda lol right? the people she beats don’t even feel captivated are motivated by what she does but rather frustrated that this person basically made defeating them look like nothing more than a fun game. If I remember correctly she literally ended up breaking the wills of two athletes
Teppuu is a great manga. It's so detailed and well-written and it really gives a good sense of what MMA is all about. Meanwhile as a fencer all I have is Duel, which reads more like a list of everything you should never, ever do in a fencing match. On a sidenote, I really like your narration of the UFC fight at the end. It got me hyped up for two fighters I'd never even heard of before now and I have mad respect for both of them. It also reminded me a bit of Ippo-Sendo II from Hajime no Ippo, continuously pushing each other to reach new heights and dig deeper.
What can I say? Seeing ripped girls go at it speaks to me on a deep, and entirely cultural, level. Are there any other underrated manga/anime like this?
I'd 100% recommend the manga, Claymore (not the anime). It's not about MMA or hand-to-hand combat, but the female cast is really fleshed out and the action scenes are great.
You should try reading "All-rounder Meguru" , another really nice mma manga with strong male and female characters. This manga also explained the techniques used in details. 10/10 recommended
Another extremely cool aspect of this manga is that several of the side-characters leading up to the tournament are straight up homages to early pioneers of women's mma in japan. 10 years before Ronda made it to the UFC people like Yuka Tsuji, Hisae Watanabe and Megumi Fujii had serious fighting chops.
I am so glad that you covered _Teppū._ It's such a gripping story with an interesting protagonist, and I love the technical focus on its combat. It may be selfish of me, but another underrated battle manga that I would *love* for you to cover is _Holyland,_ which is centered around street fighting. Not only is it ridiculously technical about its combat-even if it may flub some of the details sometimes-what's more interesting are its characters, especially its very sympathetic protagonist that's just trying to find his place in life where he belongs… his holy land. It's also by Kōji Mori, and I think it would be great to have more eyes on him, and what work he's done before _Berserk._ In fact, weeks after the tragic passing of Kentarō Miura, when I learned that Mori would be the one that would finish his close friend's story, my immediate reaction was, "Oh shit! _Berserk_ is in good hands then." In case you can't tell, I love this manga. While I definitely wouldn't say it's on the same level of _Berserk,_ it just strikes a different chord with me, and I'd love for more people to have the same love for this series as I do.
Fighting mangas like Kengan made me fall in love with the fighting genre. Teppu sounds like an awesome read and I want to thank you for introducing it to the people like me, who haven't read it yet.
I wonder if the "I'm gonna take you to Brazil" memes would ever strike any fear on John, as he would probably love to come here, seeing how much he loves our Jiu Jitsu
I also highly recommend All Rounder Meguru. It's a story about a teen fighting as an amateur in Japanese Shooto/MMA. Really explores technique a lot and it's very realistic but the story may be weak to some
Story starts slow as we explore more of the other characters - it's not like Meguru is the sole focus of the story but he's the keyhole through which the readers enter the world of Shoots/ MMA; not unlike Hajime No Ippo did in the 80s. For more actioan based MMA: Tough For MMA transcending human logic: Baki I'm glad to have found this gem and through the comments some others as well :D
This vid made me cry. Fighting changed my life and I love how you talk about it. What you said is so true, there are beautiful things you can only understand about someone by fighting them
I am Brazilian with thirteen years of past Judo practice in my life. Even though I do not train anymore, I feel it is a fundamental part of my life and how I live it. It was wonderful to see you talking about the Gracie family and their importance in Brazilian martial arts, John - you've made me want to go back to Judo again
As someone who doesn't do a lot of fighting and is generally scared off by the concept (I've tried different martial arts but I suck at all of them), thank you for this. It's given me perspective that I've not had before, especially around fighting being a collaboration rather than a show of dominance & ego, and about how freeing and meditative it could be.
I'm known for being laid back and non- confrontational yet have been boxing for 10 years, something most people would never guess having met me. I've had the good fortune to learn to box at uni, when it was a brand new course, with most of the others having zero experience like me. More girls, fewer macho bros thinking they've got something to prove. Some of by best fights I every ñ

I’ve loved martial arts for my entire life, I’ve watched it and participated in it throughout my life so it always has a place In my heart. Honestly it’s been hard for me to find friends who love MMA as much as I do and it really makes me happy listening to the passion you have for the sport. Really brightened up my day, thank you.
I just imagine Eyepatch saying the same thing before every match. Wolf: "Tell me, have you heard of hunter x hunter?" Opponent: "Um, no." Wolf: "I knew it, you're boring."
As a women who's been training and teaching karate for ten years I really respect this video. He perfectly described the experience of fighting and tournaments, something that can be scary because of injuries but filled with a rush of adrenaline. There is nothing as exciting as the rush you get from using your training and instincts to win a match, it pretty much always fills me with so much adrenaline that I cry hard. I love competing but because I'm a woman I have to fight other women. Which usually means that you and the other 2 girls at the tournament have to fight. Because karate is one of those sports that is so lacking in females. If you're considering picking up a martial art but are scared of it, especially if you're a girl/woman, please give it a go. It can sound completely terrifying or crazy at the sound of getting hurt for fun but I promise you fighting is a rewarding experience. It is such a unique feeling to step onto the floor and show off the work you've put into mastering such an art. And I came second in my last tournament and came out with not even a single bruise. Depending on the sport you will either be wearing padded gloves/ leg guards or the floor will be padded. It is completely safe. So if you are considering it please try it out. tl;dr do karate because it makes me cry good tears and it doesn't hurt (too much)
Hey! Really hope you see this and please reply. So like, I also really, really want to do this maybe I might start with karate but like I am super scared of getting hurt and fighting another person really does bother me quite a bit. I'm also a girl. Also the second thing that really worries me is that, I really don't want to become a rude or violent person down the line. I know that fighting and violence are different indeed but I just fear that I might become a worse person and I really don't want to be a jerk to people. Is that something you could share some insight on? Third thing is that just like everyone else, I too have had my fair share of traumatic experiences and I've dealt with grief a lot... if I lose a fight, will that make me feel awful and bad? I don't want to feel miserable. Yet I still want to try my hand at karate and maybe grappling. Please let me know
@@syedarizvi7290 Hey I'd love to hopefully answer some of those questions. For your first thought, Karate isn't all about violence and protecting yourself. Karate does two things called Kata and Kumete. Kata is almost like a dance routine with fighting moves, all in a specific sequence. This involves no fighting at all. Kumete is were the fighting comes in and you'll be fighting another student. So you wouldn't be fighting all the time and could potentially opt out. When I started fighting I was also terrified of hurting myself or others, which meant I was incredibly nervous to start fighting. However, ever single time we fight we make sure to wear protective gloves that have a large pad at the front, meaning the hits do not hurt. When in tournament you are even given chest, head and leg pads which help. There are also strict rules to keep you safe which make sure there are no hits to your face and a ref will stop you if you get aggressive. Keep in mind when you are fighting the person it isn't with any malicious intent but to challenge each other, so there's no hard feelings and everyone gets to learn how to defend themselves. for the second point, I've been training and practicing karate for 11 years now and I started when I was around 6-7. I can tell you myself that I don't feel any violent thoughts and I don't think karate has changed me negatively. It has brought me a lot of peace as I feel safer and more confident in myself. It has also taught me a lot of patience as I have to teach and take care of the younger students. I can only think of two students who came away from karate being violent jerks, but they started off as awful boys who were way too cocky. and didn't listen to anything they were taught. So I think you'd be able to join and not be effected negatively. We're also told to try and solve the problem by talking before resulting to defending yourself, or even suggesting that you should run. So it isn't pushing violence on students. And the finally point. I don't usually fight too much outside of training so I don't have any experiences losing but I can tell you that losing to someone in training/ tournament is totally fine. It is like simply losing a game in sport. It might hurt for a bit but in the end it doesn't matter cause it was all for fun. I hope that helped but I'd love to answer any other questions.

I've only ever been in a few fights in my life and I still can't get over the terror that is before the first punch. I shake both in anger and fear at the person in front of my but after a few blows comes a clarity and I think you really put that into words perfectly in this video. Just wanted to tell you that because it struck a chord in me when you talked about this manga.
If we're talking realistic MMA manga, then I've got to mention All-Rounder Meguru. Very true to life fighting and training with a great cast of characters. It's about a high school student starting to compete in amateur Shooto and his growth along the way.
It tends to be in sports mangas that the MC ir his team team rarely loses. Thanks to the structure of the tournaments All Rounder sets up the MC loses more sometimes from points if I remember right. Had a dry tome generally and a unique slice of life manga. It is a technical masterpiece in showing their techniques.
Beautifully made video. I love the highlight on how Sparring let's you live in the moment and see your opponent for who they are. There is something so raw about fighting for growth. You can express yourself in the most primal ways possible without being seen as violent and it's amazing. Passion and aggression and energy are stripped of the shadow of brutality and you can express yourself and move freely without fear of judgement.
Another thing i loved with Teppu is the deconstruction of the diffferent shounen personas and how they are ill suited for modern life. Natsuo's story shows that the "villain" personality of wanting to crush everyone is rooted in deep insecurities and traumas when happening in real life. Sanae is the classic "avenger" and her obsession is rather pointless and self-destructive. Yuzuko is an archetypal shounen protagonist (upbeat attitude, never backs down, is talentless but trains relentlessly) and the characters who hang out with her find her disposition to be creepy and somewhat insane. Even the teacher who trains Sanae for her revenge acknowledges that mentoring someone for such purpose is irresponsible in the real world.
I still love that line: "You're not normal, you don't act like a normal person when you're fighting..." < Everyone who ends up fighting or seeing Yuzuko fight... XD
Epic video. Did not know this Manga and will 100% check it out. You did the Joanna vs Zhang Weilli fight total justice. As well as Fighting. The many art forms in which it can take form (BJJ; Karate; etc; to MMA), and the mindset. Loved it!
For someone trying to write a shounen manga with a female martial artist as the mc, I can't stress enough how life-changing this video is. Mad respect.
Feels weird to say, but I used to do MMA when I was a teenager, but years of depression led to weight gain and just leaving the sport. But I think this is what I needed to start doing it again. I've read Teppu but hearing a personal take just helped
I understand you brother, i Lost a full scholaship because of my depression, after studing a lot About meditation, cognitive therapy, PNL, active imagination ( this is what help me to Deal with my illness, Especially when i notice the drugs and therapy was doing nothing for me, study About It maybe helps you too ) i started to practice muay thay and i Will gain another scholaship in the Future. Sawadee krap for you.
I feel the exact same way. I love MMA, but I’ve lost so much weight that it’s so difficult to be able to fight anymore.I believe in you, whoever you are. Keep me updated on how your journey goes, okay?
"victory or defeat, not being the purpose of the journey, but rather the by product of the journey" Wow, this line shook me up, thank you. I'm a terribly uncompetitive powerlifter, and it is odd to be objectively a bad athlete, but in my personal journey, be the best athlete I've ever been in my life. Thank you for this perspective
@@skylarsimes8 They are pretentious, bad losers, trashy, pretty unlikable. It's a biiiig family so there's good people and chill people in it. But yeah the notion that BJJ guys idolize the Gracies in 2021 it's just a made up narrative by people that have an axe to grind with BJJ or don't know shit.
It's crazy how much MMA has evolved from the first UFC event. So much more technical and higher fight IQs. Sometimes still as brutal and you get some bangers and then a high caliber grappling chess match. I love the evolution!
I still don't like the modern MMA as a martial art. All traditional martial arts are complete systems, they are just watered down for sports reasons. So the fun part is to add in the lost techniques after lots of sports competitions to make it work in style free fights, not to just combine tons of single techniques from different styles you think could work together. Judo punches work different than Karate punches, Karate throws different than Judo throws, they fit perfectly into their respective style, but you won't see that unless you put the effort into one style and it's sports system first. First study, then apply, you don't learn by just doing it.
@@carlosniebla7534 wut MMA contains all the intricacy of boxing cause it IS boxing, with grappling and kicking allowed. Hence the name. Mixed martial arts.
As I just started going to Kickbox a few weeks back, this video speaks to my heart. Ironically, fighting brings people closer to each other. As you said into the video, when fighting someone you get to know them like no one else does. My comment it's a year late, but thank you for making great videos.
The whole talentless thing strikes a chord with me. I’ve been doing XC at during the summer because of a varsity friend. I sucked when I started running, but after pushing myself I’m now running 50 miles a week before even getting into freshman year. It’s crazy what hard work and the right mindset can do for you.
This video is perfection. I love how you tell the story of Joanna vs Weili. The fact that it was also the UFC fight of the year meant a lot to me as a female martial artist.
As a fellow Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practicioner, when you went into how fighting makes you feel, that, that right there was the perfect encapsulation of what I feel when I train and fight. Thank you for that brother. You earned my sub off just that
It's been almost three years since I've stopped training, some part due to financial problems, but specially due to the pandemic. This year, more than ever, I have been feeling this NEED to get back to fighting, and this video just made this feeling stronger, making me remember just why I love fighting, even if I'm not actually good, even if I'm too lazy to make great progress, the thing is: martials arts is not just fun, but it can connect people and make you discover more about yourself in such a unique way that I now see that I was missing it so much more than I thought I ever was.
@@kavmanproductions Sadly, no. Money issues have hit hard and exercise at home is the most I got around to. Things are getting better though, and I'm still planning on getting back to martial arts.
Caught this video around half a year ago, started BJJ in March/April and got my first stripe this week. The thing that convinced me was your line about not being able to worry about the stuff in your head when someone's trying to choke you out. Being able to shut my brain up for a while and train to defend myself at the same time is pretty neat. So, thanks for the video!
Never thought i would be shedding tears by the end of a UA-cam short documentary about a manga, mma, and fighting, yet here we are. Lovely video, super informative and very well made. Your passion came through clearly, nicely done.
I went and read this whole thing after five minutes into the video. Natsuo's character is incredible, and she became one of, if not, my favorite manga protagonist of all time. I truly hope people will flock and read this, because this Manga deserves so much love for how incredibly told it is. I didn't expect to shed a tear for this series, but dang it, did it make me cry. Absolutely phenomenal.
This video made me take up Jiu Jitsu. It was something I've been considering for awhile, but just yesterday I just pulled the trigger and did it. I got bodied my first day, and being tall I was the perfect opponent for jiu jitsu as I am the ideal opponent for most people and it's easy to leave myself open by virtue of longer limbs. But the instructors and people there are great and are also going over the advantages I do have, and it's a very welcoming environment to say the least. The excitement to get better is honestly the thing that's driving me the most, and I can't wait for my next class 3 days from this comment. Thanks man for all that you do, and I hope you're doing very well!
"It felt like an instruction manual", when you said that it made me recall one manga i've read. Its title is *All Rounder Meguru,* and it shares some art styles with Teppuu too! I sill haven't gotten quite far in the story yet, but I recommend it! Also, very awesome video! It really made me miss Karate and it inspired me to want try sparring and Jiu-jitsu too! I was really scared of sparring back when I was in classes so I didn't do much of it (which I really regret), so I love that you've given me a new way to view it.
I read Teppu and most of All Rounder Meguru, they are both awesome and very detailed. They're like Baby Steps, but for fighting. Very detailed and informational.
For a very long time I've used this video as a way to re-ignite my love of martial arts whenever I've questioned it. And even though this channel is not mainly focusing on martial arts just hearing the amount of love you have for it makes me feel inspired.
This is the second time I’ve watched this video, the first being when it came out, but once he got to the final portion where he talked about the championship match, something switched. I remembered what he said before he even said it and I started crying. I don’t know why. I don’t know why it hit me so hard the second time around, but it was beautiful. Something about the respect and love they gave each other while both were going beyond their limits is something so beautiful. Thank you.
"Except, this girl isn't our protagonist." Bro... You literally just sold this to me. I love twists. I love diverting expectations. Before even seeing this, I liked the taller girl for some reason. And I'm glad she's our protagonist. After all, not every protagonist has to follow the same boring character trope. And I already love it.
I remember years back, binging this series and loving it. That hope spot with Natsuo and her brother wrecked me, like a kick to the ribs. Thanks John for covering this hidden gem!
Another interesting thing about Natsuo, although eyepatch is definitely right about her, her natural talent leaves her bored. She hates that's she never has to try at anything, and on some level she actually wants to know what it's like, not only to give something her all, but to still come up short despite that. There's a surprisingly big part of Natsuo that wants to lose in spite of her hard work if only to have something to strive for. She's actually a really fascinating protagonist, and if you haven't read Teppu, I encourage you to do so.
As a college lvl wrestler myself its always been a pleasure seeing how well anime covers all forms of mixed martial arts its really one of the strongest points of manga in particular in that almost everyone of them comes from a place of love and admiration in regards to the topics covered in the series while the industry does have its problem, the fact that a manga to this very day can be successful drawn and written by one person or at least one person has creative control and final word on all things in the manga giving you a window into a persons life that only really novels share
When I first heard the name "Baki the grappler", this is what I was hoping it would be. As much as I love Baki now that I've read it, I'm now really looking forward to reading this. Thanks for another great recommendation!
This video is basically SEW’s way of saying he’s finally watched Fighting In The Age of Loneliness and wanted to gush about how much it’s expanded his perspective about combat sports...and I love it :)
Real talk. I go back and watch FITAOL every year around Christmas time. It's a good cleanser in a way. "Go out there. Touch Gloves. And fight. For the rest of your life.
In Brazil we have two words for fighting, to distinguish between mindless violence and a respectful combat between two fighters. These words are "Briga" and "Luta" the former being used to describe violent altrecations between people and the latter being used to describe an actual fight with rules and all that. Ex: If two people get into an argument and end up punching each other with no regards, it's called "briga". If two people fight with respect and technique, that's "luta" Both words can be applied to different situations depending on context tho. Dunno, I think pointing this out was relevant since this video talks about a fighting manga and there's Brazil involved.
As much jiu-jitsu as ive trained ive met exactly 1 Brazilian. Alot of white guys that stayed in Brazil long enough to sound funny. Thanks for that lesson bro.
Uma briga é quando dois adolescentes tentando parecer foda. Uma luta é quando dois macho esquecem o resto e focam em vencer o outro, e nada mais importa por um momento
As someone ho lived in Brazil for like half my life I didn't know this. For me they were just to word to describe the same thing. This is actually good to know
its a thing of beauty to hear about others’ experiences with martial arts and how its almost always a story of positive change within when people partake.
I've never heard anyone else capture my feelings towards martial arts so well! You really do make a special connection with the people you train with, and its so complex. You simultaneously trust them not to rip you apart but to also show you your weaknesses and help you get better, and vice versa. It's very special to me, I think that's the real meaning of martial arts.

Well not necessarily the difference is between fighting/violence and sparring.
not rnoesscarily
Aren’t they basically the same going by the dictionary definition?
The last paragraph is exactly why i think that life, even with all of it's hardships, is worth it. Because humans can make anything into an art

The only ones that usually took me down were the boxing dudes or this one dude to was a self taught wrestler.
@@cheesyboy1627 With karate it is very hit or miss with if it works or not I would say, the differing styles and focuses for different people make it hard to group the martial art as a whole together because of all the different styles and techniques. If you're mainly focusing on kata or training for Olympic martial arts (so more going for points etc) obviously your overall fighting skill in street fights and things are going to be worse. I practiced sessen ryu which yes we focused on kata but the main chunk of it was practicing the fundamentals of combat although we didn't do much sparring to perfect this. with all that being said i believe karate can work and does work, you just need to find the right style and techniques/training style that suites you and what you want to get out of it. Hello "" *("Hello", I apologise in I have no other word in relation towards English. Me (a man) saying hello towards a sister/woman is a big unkind).I write as a Man (Born);
The first Man (Aadam; Adam) was commanded to enter his body by Allah. Aadam (Adam) refused to enter his body despite being comanded by Allah. Aadam did not approach the first Woman (Havwa; Eve). Havwa (Eve) approached Aadam (Adam) and asked permission. Havwa afterwords cursed Aadam. Having a child was never real. The first Man does not "love" the first Woman. Love is not real. It is chemical reactions. Men posses not "love". Life hence why the first Woman approached the First Man. Since she cursed the first Man she is now incapable of changing. Women never possesed "love". The Life I mentioned. Only men posses this. Now look... The only people that exist are the first woman and the first Man. She cursed the first Man. Where does she go? She cannot be with herself. She ends in a loop. She imiates the first man. Every single science fiction story shows stuff that had never exited or could never exist. Even with dreams. None has originality. Every sciecne fiction story and book imiates our world. So she can spend eternity and have everything. Women are the strongest beings and are unique. Men are WEAK. But even with all the time, power etc. Imiation of men is all there is. Women are inheriently EVIL. Men are born to die. Why? The child making was not real as I said. Also another reason for why she approached him. Men do not f women. Women f Men.
Women make children not men. " A needle has liquid in it but who does the action? The liquid or the needle? The needle as that contains both." Woman is the needle and Liquid.

really underrated martial art, but it's amazing for people who master it.
I really hope she makes a comeback
i just want to see an even match - not some curbstomp
note on the note: Joanna was destroyed by Rose in their first match and destroyed again (though to a lesser extent) in their rematch
and in Zhang's next fight she was beaten by Rose who is now the champ again. Zhang is getting a rematch soon and she and Joanna are the top 2 challengers

Good video though I would have preferred to include the name of the manga in the video's title, so it can be promoted better.
What can I say? Seeing ripped girls go at it speaks to me on a deep, and entirely cultural, level. Are there any other underrated manga/anime like this?
Just dropping a reply so I can get recommended too if someone comes through for you
I'd 100% recommend the manga, Claymore (not the anime). It's not about MMA or hand-to-hand combat, but the female cast is really fleshed out and the action scenes are great.
you want Nejimaki Kagyu. it's not a realistic one like Teppu, but it's basically about girls beating the shit out of each other.

Whats the name?
Oh hell yeah i didnt know that
I am so glad that you covered _Teppū._ It's such a gripping story with an interesting protagonist, and I love the technical focus on its combat.
_Berserk_ is in good hands then."
In case you can't tell, I love this manga. While I definitely wouldn't say it's on the same level of _Berserk,_ it just strikes a different chord with me, and I'd love for more people to have the same love for this series as I do.
Thank you for giving me the name of the series

I also highly recommend All Rounder Meguru. It's a story about a teen fighting as an amateur in Japanese Shooto/MMA. Really explores technique a lot and it's very realistic but the story may be weak to some
Story starts slow as we explore more of the other characters - it's not like Meguru is the sole focus of the story but he's the keyhole through which the readers enter the world of Shoots/ MMA; not unlike Hajime No Ippo did in the 80s.

I hope that helped but I'd love to answer any other questions.
huh?

XD

@@carlosniebla7534 Boxing 2 centuries old, MMA is almost 30 years old. We can't compare them
I still don't like the modern MMA as a martial art.

@@Asbjoern nice answer dude. I also suggest literally every website ever when someone ask for recommendations.
i know “FINALLY!” i absolutely love this manga 😤😤
I'm so angry that most martial arts mangas that have only females always get shit-canned after a couple of volumes.
this video is one of the things that got me back into karate after 10 years, thank you ☆
"When I first started Jujitsu I was in a bad place." *starts playing Nine Inch Nails*
Yeah, that checks out.
Did you get back on that wagon?
@@kavmanproductions Sadly, no. Money issues have hit hard and exercise at home is the most I got around to. Things are getting better though, and I'm still planning on getting back to martial arts.
@@BGrimoire theirs beauty in the struggle. NEVER QUIT
@@BGrimoire Hey bro what about now?
Caught this video around half a year ago, started BJJ in March/April and got my first stripe this week. The thing that convinced me was your line about not being able to worry about the stuff in your head when someone's trying to choke you out. Being able to shut my brain up for a while and train to defend myself at the same time is pretty neat. So, thanks for the video!
Same
Never thought i would be shedding tears by the end of a UA-cam short documentary about a manga, mma, and fighting, yet here we are.
Never have I read somthing and received a second hand adrenaline rush, I loved it.

This Manga sounds awesome…but I’ll wait For the anime 🤷🏽♂️
@@marcotheman6886 the manga has been around for a while chief, I highly doubt it’s getting one *sobs*
I really recommend it, the fights are well thought-out and based in solid strategy. Also I like the charactes a lot :D
I got my fighting knowledge from Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple.
That's all time favorite read
xD it's a great one , best fantasy MA manga anywhere , just real enough to feel true, just absurd enough to be awesome
i always tought kenichi dying after apachai's kicks was funny but absurd until i started practicing martial arts myself. now i know it's all real XD
@@pedromoura1446 muay thai is no joke. Especially when it's an overpowered giant apachai lmao

And I already love it.
what?
The beanstalk is an asshole. I love her
"I liked the taller girl for some reason".
That's... a little concerning.
@@facundomontivero2299 Natsuo is the more outwardly interesting character, that is what they meant.
So basically Ujiro Hanma only a high school chick. Got it.
i would but i hate yuri
@@astrotecn it literally has no focus on romance. At all. It's a martial arts manga before all else.
@@judaihyuga i see, will give it a try then.
@@astrotecn "I would check out this manga but I just hate that it might have gay people in it," is certainly a stance to have lol
If two people fight with respect and technique, that's "luta"
Both words can be applied to different situations depending on context tho.
Dunno, I think pointing this out was relevant since this video talks about a fighting manga and there's Brazil involved.
There’s a couple Brazilian characters that actually discuss/mention luta.
As much jiu-jitsu as ive trained ive met exactly 1 Brazilian. Alot of white guys that stayed in Brazil long enough to sound funny. Thanks for that lesson bro.
I love how poetically and beautifully he talks about martial art, honestly I can just hear him talk about martial art for hours and hours
