Kagetsu is/was simply the best. One of my favourite matches was were she felt so invincible that she claimed she would defeat her opponent in under 5 minutes, and proposed a timelimit and in case of a draw she would loose her title. At the beginning of the match she brought a kettle and cup noodles to the ring, and claimed she would be done in time for a nice hot cup of isntant ramen. She wrestled the match very lackadaisical, constantly belittleling her opponent at first, but grew more desperate with time. While she was clearly the superior figther in the match, her oponent would kick out constantly and not giving up. Kagetsu won of course, but it too her 6 minutes 30. She got up took her Cup Noodles, ate them and stated "A bit too cold I guess... Well, you did prove me wrong, I took longer, how long was it? 6 minutes 30?... Well I guess I proposed to lose the title if I took to long... But Rossi [the owner] never gave me a contract for the stipulation, so it was never official, So I guess I keep it, don't I?" and walked away. Kagetsu is great.

Alucard from Hellsing. He absolutely despised monsters like vampires and ghouls and werewolves, when he himself was the pinnacle of vampirism. He thus hated himself. He saw himself as a weak tusk of a man that couldn't achieve greatness in life without making a pact with the devil. That's also the reason he respects humans like Alexandr Anderson. The man was the only equal of Alucard the king of vampires in a duel, without actually being a vampire and still retaining his humanity, and they both deeply respected each other as men and as opponents. Hellsing was awesome.
I can't get over the fact that the most dramatic storyline in this video is about the shocking, unexpected turn to the dark side of a man whose name is literally EVIL
I mean in D&D evil just means your fine with doing a Violence/Oppression/Socially unacceptable, so even a Chaotic Evil character could still have really deep friendships, and very loving relationships, just you might murder someone of they get in your way
Kinda like "no publicity is bad publicity " even if it makes it look like your teenage daughter is grinding on your lap based off one still photo image. (the Trump and his daughter one from 96 I think, I'm not going to debate opinions as I don't care, just what I thought of)
Well that depends on the booing honestly. Roman Reigns was booed for a while for the wrong reasons but yes I agree that any reaction is better than no reaction. Although in Japanese wrestling the crowds react differently, they are silent for a while to respect the wrestlers and the people watching then cheer at certain times. Any wrestler who knows how to work with a crowd knows what they're doing.
@@juliand.breakdown463 UK and continental Europe seem to play by those rules, too, as does indy circuit in general - the Kaiju Big Battel circuit for sure, and here in Ottawa 4C wrestling the most noise is always the biggest boos for the "meanest" villains. It all depends on how rowdy a given scene tends to be.
"What" and "boring" chants are some of the most toxic chants and do not benefit anybody. Booing a heel is fine and even encouraged to an extent, because they're supposed to be hated.
“She made a running joke of hanging her opponent and kicking her down stairs” Wait... running joke... like multiple times? That requires a lot of set up to do
Yeah I can think of at least three times where she hung Mayu from something and dropped her, though kicking her down the stairs only happened when she did the hanging at one venue (Korakuen Hall). Though there was also the time she dropped the entrance stage onto Mayu's neck, when she wanted to mix up the attempted murder

Even as someone who is not a wrestling fan, I think his videos about wrestling are some of his best and if I see him post one, I click on it immediately.
The key is passion. I could listen to a guy talk about something I never cared about, because as long as they are passionate they will have a lot to say about it and their excitement may prove infectious.
I have to agree. I don't follow wrestling at all but his videos about them are just so good. Though at this point I feel like he can make video on anything and it'd be good.
I feel like cutting Gorgeous George's advice in half lessens its impact a bit. "A lot of people will pay to see someone shut your mouth. So keep on bragging, keep on sassing and always be outrageous."
When you understand that Gorgeous George made a living out of people paying to see someone stop him from doing his own antics, the other half is pretty dang obvious.
Kegetsu reminds me of that one anime character who isnt inherently evil but just wants to fight someone strong enough to give them a challenge so they belittle the characters till they finally are strong enough to win
"It was a fucking plastic spider and I'm still mad about it" That line summarizes literally everything that happened to every member of the Wyett family in WWE.

Thanks for exposing us to Kagetsu. She sounds like the Japanese Undertaker - a legendary final boss who was actually a great parental figure backstage.
The Network saw the vignettes introducing him, which involved him menacing a child, and told them to scrap the gimmick in case people thought they were promoting child abuse. The rest of it was a worked shoot.
@@ogreevans You're right, and man Suzuki's early Pancrase career is super underrated. As terrifying as he might be as a grizzled pro-wrestler today, he was equally (if not more) terrifying as a young, ripped, hyper-talented catch-wrestler looking to legitimately torture you before ripping your leg off. And even during that time, he mastered being a heel without saying a word; from that douchebag pompadour, to the way he'd smirk obnoxiously when his opponents try to counter his wrestling, to the signature black towel entrance... the man was a menace you wanted to hate and/or fear.

Kagetsu looks in all those matches like she is having the time of her life. I had no idea that wrestling brand existed but it looks amazing even without giant halls and pyrotechnics.
It’s kinda hard to forget Koketsu, crazily enough, as an artist, just looking at her move makes me wanna draw each of her dynamics, she’s beyond inspirational.
The way he set it up too...kenta had nothing to do with the story but just mention him and the bullet club...even anyone who doesn't know were in shock at that turn... brilliant storytelling
I really don't know why, but watching those clips of Kagetsu gave me goosebumps. She looked like she was having the time of her life as well as looking incredibly intimidating and a bit insane. Then to hear what her motivation was... just wow. I'm going to have to look her and her matches up
Proper strong style stuff too. Yeah those strikes are pulled, but watching her take that pump kick to the head or all those forearm strikes. Fuck me what a badass.
@JoJo is not an anime people have different ideologies about freedom, you just happen to like authority more, and Sgt slaughter's tagline is definitely coming from an authoritarian heel
The most exposure to wrestling I’ve ever gotten before this was when they did a wrestling-themed episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race and I thought the names “faces” and “heels” were something they made up for the show.
... wait, Kagetsu? Someone is finally talking about Kagetsu? You've made me so unbelievably happy. Her run towards the end of her career encapsulated everything I love about wrestling. I think about them, her feuds, her relationships often- and no one else ever knows who I'm talking about. While those brief frames of Kagetsu, Kris, and Hana bring up... a lot of complex feelings, it also summarizes one of the strongest periods in wrestling for me and I'm glad it's being remembered.
All of Oedo Tai really deserve more international recognition. They're hands down my all time favorite wrestling faction. Of course, just sucks that they're basically gone now, with Kagetsu and Kris being retired and that awful tragedy with Hana.
He's actually pretty chill when he's not in-character. Very calm and good sense of humor. I don't think he hates white people either. He just understands how to use race to get heat. I don't agree with a lot of shit Jack has done, but at the end of the day he's just another guy trying to make a paycheck.
I audibly gasped at the “Symbol of the Bullet Club” part, despite having never heard of any of these people or their organization (outside of your extremely informative videos) 😅
Honestly EyepatchWolf's production and timing is so good it gives the scene a lot of extra gravitas and impact. He's clearly passionate about wrestling and his passion carries on to the way he edits this videos. Thats why i enjoy them a lot despite being a complete stranger to wrestling and not knowing any of these people and the storylines they take part in at all previously
So happy MJF was mentioned in this video. I went to private school and was surrounded by entitled, condescending guys like him. I even went into fashion design in college and the sight of burberry fake or otherwise gets my blood boiling thanks to MJF. He really is a master of his craft.
Suzuki prostrating himself before Liger gives me chills every time. It's just so damn poignant, and the reaction of the crowd really elevates the moment.
Hana Kimura appearing hit me harder than I expected. It's weird seeing her in a video that isn't focused on her. It's like seeing a familiar face in the background of a photo. Such a shame. R.I.P.
This reminds me of the panel he had in Anime Expo where he said: "My wrestler name would be The Cyclest! I'd have a bicycle that I walk up to every wrestling match that would have a bunch of locks attached and before the beginning of every match, I'd say 'hold on a second,' and unlock all the locks. After unlocking them, I'd stop and say, 'I would like to take a moment to talk about CO2 emissions.' Then I'd use tire irons and dirty tricks to get easy wins!" Either way, Super Eyepatch Wolf, I'm sorry as I was one of those people that attended your panel and didn't know who you were.
Being a heel is liberating. When you're trying to get people to like you, there's rules you have to follow, there's certain things you can't say or do. When you're making people hate you, that all goes away, you don't have to worry about rules or conventions on how to behave. For me, that's the true brilliance of being a heel.
The japanese female heels was really similar to Code Geass's plot , becoming the greatest evil inorder to bring out the greatest justice , it was so cool that I was awestruck when I had first finished Code Geass.
@XL R8 well it was the lead characters solution to the problem of the empire his family built….. how do you get everyone to forgive the old regime? Become worse and ostracize them from power. How much worse? Mind blowingly worse. Executions. Silencing media that is dissenting. Curfews. Rationing food and resources because you can. Etc.
Huh. I have been wanting to write a story in which a villian is aware of the suffering is causing because he hopes someone will beat him and bring and even greater good. Guess nothing is trurly original.

Antonio Inoki is one of the most interesting figures in the history of professional wrestling and Japanese sports and entertainment more generally. The concept of a Japanese Shi‘a Muslim retired pro wrestling superstar-turned-veteran diplomat and hostage negotiator sounds like the setup to a very convoluted joke, but it isn't.

Hot damn. The moment Suzuki goes from holding the steel chair over Liger to a full-floor-contact bow (not a normal bow, mind you. True prostration) is amazing. Talk about a moment that both impresses you deeply but messes with your head because it so strongly clashes with the created/altered/heightened reality surrounding this industry. Wow. Some random facts regarding some of the wrestlers that were mentioned by Eyepatch Wolf, for whoever is curious: - New Jack had a match at Smokey Mountain against the actual Undertaker but unfortunately the footage seems to be lost. The video for the promo building up to the match is up on UA-cam - Minoru Suzuki is not a scary motherfucker just because he wears a black towel on his head during his entrance or his funky hairstyle, he is a legit fighter who has pioneered modern MMA as one of the founders of Pancrase in the early 90s, where also people like Ken Shamrock and Bas Rutten have fought. So this helps bring forward the fact that he is a dangerous competitor - Minoru Suzuki is also huge fan of One Piece, and has also appeared in one of the Chopperman specials. He also often wears a fedora outside of the ring. The man couldn't give any less fucks. - EVIL's finishing maneuver is called... EVIL
minorus face while attacking is so creepy, the guy looks like he will rip you into pieces+ i dont think its coincidence that his towel over head resembles reaper or death, the opponent who is going against him will not be happy because he won but because he survived against death incarnate
Minoru Suzuki legitimately beat Ken Shamrock twice, arguably during Ken's most roided-out prime (Ken naturally dwarfed the comparatively svelte 5'10" Suzuki). One of those wins was particularly brutal: Suzuki got a hold of Ken's leg in a heel-hook and yanked it HARD into a kneebar. Ken managed to grab the ropes to save himself with a rope-break, but Suzuki had ripped his leg so hard that Ken couldn't continue. Years later, they would meet again, and the more experienced Ken Shamrock... would get kneebar'd again. Suzuki also beat Jushin Thunder Liger in a legit MMA fight in 2003. It was... hard to watch.
@@Tenchigumi as far as I remember, Shamrock has always contested one of the wins and cited behind the scenes shenanigans, because like PRIDE some years later they allegedly fixed some matches to build hype around Minoru and Funaki, but nothing concrete has ever come out AFAIK. But Minoru always remains an insanely respected grappler by many people, like Bas, Barnett and also his master Karl Gotch, and like you said, often fought people way over his weight class in Pancrase and did always pretty well.
EVIL's favourite food is called EVIL, he shares it with his pet raccoon, who is called EVIL. He has an impressive bug collection, too. I saw it but it's mostly wEVILs.
And Kagetsu being awesome didn't even end with retirement He later ended up having one of the most public coming outs on the Japanese wrestling scene (as a trans man), wrote a book about his experiences and still occasionally wrestles on the memorial shows for one of his deceased students Absolute legend
First thought: ok, EPW's wrestling vids are good, but he might be stretching out the subject thin on this one... Middle of the video: *tearing up seeing Suzuki giving manly respect to Liger* wrestling's so cool...

@@goblinrat6119 Suzuki is about legit as you can get, he helped create MMA as it's known today in his younger days. If you don´t become interested in wrestling after hearing SuperEyepatchWolf sheer passion when talking about wrestling, you are a clinically diagnosed sociopath.
Basically, yeah. Pro wrestling is, at its core, performance art, and it's evolved in a way since the days of the Attitude Era (with its shock jock humor and juvenile writing) into great theater with complex, three-dimensional characters that don't have to be all shouty and angry all the time, now able to convey a variety of emotions. Basically, modern pro wrestling has openly embraced the performance art aspect of it and, in the case of wrestling around the world, can be viewed as a great window of getting a vibe for different cultures around the world: look at how different the wrestling is in Mexico or Australia compared to a place like Japan or the Congo; the internet has kinda allowed pro wrestling to become this really beautiful thing that can, if given a chance, bring people together in a shared sense of understanding.
Yeah that's another thing. I never got interested into wrestling but I was always told it sucks bc it's fake. But like... movies and tv shows are fake?? And like, does it matter if it's fake? Do people actually expect wrestlers to fight like gladiators and illegal underground fight clubs?? Idk that's just weird. Super eyepatch make me realize it's a whole world of entertainement, story lines and character arcs and it seems so interesting.
Coming back to this after the tragic announcement about Windham Rotunda/Bray Wyatt. This vid is such a fantastic dive into the brilliance wrestling can showcase, and it's saddening that so many write it off without a second thought due to it being scripted.
That Naito/EVIL moment gave me chills just having the story described to me. When EVIL raised the Too Sweet i had to pause the video. I thought maybe he would just attack his old friend. But to jump to the Bullet Club? I barely knew anything about Naito and even less about EVIL, but that betrayal actually made me gasp. That is some well done storytelling
Evolve or die. Naito had to do it when his Stardust Genius gimmick didn't work and was rejected by fans. EVIL just followed suit to not be forgotten. He probably didn't have to stab Naito in the back that hard to do so but you know, he's EVIL.
It’s such a good turn because it’s so shocking when it happens, but immediately after it happens, it makes so much sense why he had to do it. That’s the best kind of twist.
Same! It gave me a different perspective on the whole thing. I didn't start watching New Japan til Omega/Okada 1 so I didn't know they had all that history.

If you’re into anime and haven’t tried watching wrestling, you’re missing out on what I think is the greatest and longest tournament arc anime that ever existed.
It's always been a bit more like a video game or a LARP to me, as the characters distinctly have stats and abilities that straight up make some just stronger than the others. For example, Santino Marella shouldn't have beaten Sheamus that one time, but hit an absurdly lucky critical success on something, or how Kofi Kingston seemed to always beat Randi Orton (or Edge always beat Kurt Angle) because one of them just happened to be tuned to a bunch of very specific weaknesses in the other, despite being consistently lower on the card at the time.

Wow, I just now realized that the six lunatics in Yakuza 6 are based off of real Japanese wrestlers. I only noticed when I saw Naito and recognized him.
The whole Majima Construction side-story/mini game in Kiwami 2 revolves entirely around legendary Japanese pro-wrestlers posing as rival gangster businessmen, and tons of the combat units you acquire are past and present NJPW stars including Okada and Tanahashi. That series LOVES its pro-rasslers.
For EVIL, I’d also add another detail. Los Ingobernables were small and close, but they weren’t like the Bullet Club where they would help each other win matches by any means necessary, EVIL got no help and so lost, and was seen as a weak since he needed it the most. It’s every man for themselves in LIJ, and this is also displayed as when members of LIJ clash they don’t hold back and go for it, as opposed to the fun BC and Suzuki-gun members have when they face. By joining Bullet Club he now had an army too who would help him stay as the god and not let Naito anywhere near him, as well as being able to help that army - what Naito never did for him.
Really happy to see this video back up. I saw this for the first time in early 2022 when I was just getting super into wrestling, and you introduced me to Stardom and Joshi, and where I’m at now, I don’t know what I’d be without Joshi. It’s almost all I watch anymore. I wouldn’t have Mayu Iwatani or AZM or Giulia had I not seen this video. And now Mayu is less than two weeks away from a match with the reason I started watching wrestling at all, Mercedes Moné. Seeing this video again isn’t just cool because it’s a terrific video, although it is, it’s cool because it’s kind of part of a full circle moment for me. Would be thrilled to see another wrestling upload from you soon, but I’ll watch no matter the topic anyway. Keep up the awesome work. EDIT: This is the first time I’ve seen footage Hana Kimura turn up in wrestling circles other than people memorializing her, so that’s cool. I’ve only ever watched her matches posthumously, so seeing her wrestle and seeing Kagetsu/Yu Ishino mention her by name and it’s treated as part of a larger story, a whole, got to me. For a moment it felt like Hana was still with us. So thank you for that

In pro wrestling, booing is just another kind of cheering. Or, as they say, any reaction is better than no reaction.
Any wrestler who knows how to work with a crowd knows what they're doing.
thats so stupid wwe thinking
@@juliand.breakdown463 UK and continental Europe seem to play by those rules, too, as does indy circuit in general - the Kaiju Big Battel circuit for sure, and here in Ottawa 4C wrestling the most noise is always the biggest boos for the "meanest" villains. Some random facts regarding some of the wrestlers that were mentioned by Eyepatch Wolf, for whoever is curious:
- New Jack had a match at Smokey Mountain against the actual Undertaker but unfortunately the footage seems to be lost. The video for the promo building up to the match is up on UA-cam
- Minoru Suzuki is not a scary motherfucker just because he wears a black towel on his head during his entrance or his funky hairstyle, he is a legit fighter who has pioneered modern MMA as one of the founders of Pancrase in the early 90s, where also people like Ken Shamrock and Bas Rutten have fought. So this helps bring forward the fact that he is a dangerous competitor
- Minoru Suzuki is also huge fan of One Piece, and has also appeared in one of the Chopperman specials. He also often wears a fedora outside of the ring. The man couldn't give any less fucks.
- EVIL's finishing maneuver is called... EVIL
actually he changed it to EVERYTHING IS EVIL.
minorus face while attacking is so creepy, the guy looks like he will rip you into pieces+ i dont think its coincidence that his towel over head resembles reaper or death, the opponent who is going against him will not be happy because he won but because he survived against death incarnate
@@Tenchigumi as far as I remember, Shamrock has always contested one of the wins and cited behind the scenes shenanigans, because like PRIDE some years later they allegedly fixed some matches to build hype around Minoru and Funaki, but nothing concrete has ever come out AFAIK. me when SuperEyepatchWolf talks about wrestling: **HAVE YOU HEARD THE TALE OF THE GOLDEN LOVERS**

If you don´t become interested in wrestling after hearing SuperEyepatchWolf sheer passion when talking about wrestling, you are a clinically diagnosed sociopath.
I'm in this comment and I don't like it.
Is it possible to learn this power???
*Turns and looks at you* Not from a Babyface.
Basically, people saying wrestling is fake are missing out on a great show.
I never understand it. If you can accept the storyline of a movie; you should be able to accept the entertainment of professional wrestling.
It is fake, but it's fun so who cares.
Or, you know, a mediocre show. You saw that hall of terrible heels.
That Kegetsu girl is an anime villain, even down to her line.
@@soliduswasright678 and everything is EVIL
It’s such a good turn because it’s so shocking when it happens, but immediately after it happens, it makes so much sense why he had to do it. That’s the best kind of twist.
Same! It gave me a different perspective on the whole thing. I didn't start watching New Japan til Omega/Okada 1 so I didn't know they had all that history.
I still stand by my theory that EVIL is a double agent for LIJ
Me: Notices Super Eyepatch Wolf's passion for wrestling.
Also me: Excitedly waiting for a video about Tiger Mask.

Not WWE.it hasn't been good in decades.

Anthony Ha bro when I saw fuckin Chono in Y3 I marked the fuck out
For EVIL, I’d also add another detail.
Damn... That is some Greek tragedy shit right there. And I'd never even heard of these people before this video.

So thank you for that
You ever think you could do a follow up discussing babyfaces? Universally beloved babyfaces are arguably harder than being a heel

That's kinda the thing with pro wrestling; he's got plausible deniability on his side. All he'd have to do is turn around say "It's all part of the show, baby."
Of course, he has been kinda punished in other ways, like the fact he seemingly can't get work in pro wrestling anymore because he's burned too many bridges and has done too much psycho shit which, in this day and age, is not acceptable, even in the deathmatch wrestling circuit.
